The hunter wasn’t too sure how he felt about Valentine’s Day. On one hand it made it easy for Ryan to pick out and gather a nice list of his preys. There were so many singles desperately looking for a date, enough to go out with someone who they would normally hate or be disgusted of. Luckily for him, he was charming, well-mannered, good-looking, and the perfect boyfriend for anyone, or so they think. And on the other hand, looking at how hard everyone was trying to get laid made him sick. Guys and girls with V-necks down to their stomach, super short shorts, cropped tops, make-up, cologne—prostitutes everywhere. Armed with carnations—because roses were too cliché—a small box of chocolate—because girls loved chocolate but it made them fat—and a card, Ryan strolled down the street of Poinsettia. Like a magnet, he attracted the gazes of the opposite gender, and hell, even a few of the same gender. He wondered who would be his first victim. The brunette to his left wasn’t that bad; she had a nice natural curve in her body, intelligent eyes, minimal make-up, and a confident step in her stride. Ryan could imagine how it would play it. He would advance and drop something in front of her. She was a nice girl; how she carried herself and spoke told him so. When she picks it up and chases after him, he'll sheepishly thank her. He'll lie and say that his girl had just dumped him for another man. Guilt trips always worked with naturally good looks and good acting. Finally he'll give her the chocolate, not wanting to waste it, and chance it by asking her to accompany him for lunch. Or maybe that white-haired girl to his right. Short hair and stature; pale and thin complexion. She seemed to be without a date or maybe she was waiting on him, but that didn’t matter. Faithful or unfaithful or simply just single, he should be able to get her in time. Ryan was who he was after all. With confidence he walked towards the girl and presented her with flowers. “Hey, I just met you, and this is crazy, but I really like you, so go out with me, maybe?” he said to her in a melodic tone, bowing his head slightly and peaking up with a shy smile to wrap up the act. The people around them looked at them in surprise and excitement, waiting in anticipation for an answer. Public pressure made it more likely for people to say yes. Alice couldn't say for certain whether the prospect of a holiday in which one basically announces to the world that they are trying their best to get laid. It wasn't as if she was going to partake in it - she had far more important things to do. Like following the odd riddle she had found during her frenzied escape from her past existence. Which, admittedly, she hadn't made much progress on recently. It felt almost as if she was chasing a thief across the continent; every time she'd find a lead in one town, she'd follow it to another town, only to hit a dead end and lose it, thrown back to square one. In all honesty, the girl wasn't sure what kept her following this thing. Perhaps it was the fact that she had little else to do with her newfound freedom, or perhaps it was the mysticism behind the odd words that continually starved her curiosity - or perhaps a bit of both. The more Alice pondered the motivations behind it all, the more hilarious it was; it was Valentine's Day, and here she was, standing on the streets of Poinsetta, surrounded by twentysomethings and late teens and their significant others, whilst she had been staring at the same crumpled-up, weathered note for what seemed like hours. The orphan had reached the point where she was most likely daydreaming rather than actually reading, when- "WHA-" The short-haired albino's mouth opened involuntarily as a man in front of her suddenly spoke, startling her. She quickly cut herself off before anything stupid came out of her mouth, haphazardly stuffing the riddle in her pants pocket and straightening her posture. In front of her stood a young man she didn't recognize (already cause for concern; if there was anything the past few years had taught her, it was that if someone you didn't know approached you, you've been singled out for a very particular reason - one that more often than not facilitated broken bones), apparently offering her a bundle of flowers. He was admittedly not the least attractive male Alice had ever met - his hair was golden and complimented by sharp golden eyes on an equally sharp face, as if daylight had seeped into his features. His attire was just as sharp, and notably clean. In fact, the girl was sure she looked quite unkempt in her wrinkled old dress shirt that was far too large for her torso, her disheveled dress pants that were characteristically rolled up to her ankle, and her old-looking shoes with no socks. Most notably, however, he was tall. Very tall, at least compared to Alice, who was fairly sure she was nearly a foot shorter. The snow-haired female stared up at the young man for just a bit too long before realizing he had asked her something. "Oh! Er..." Shit, what should she say? She couldn't just say no to this guy! He just...had this charming air about him that just compelled her to accept. But what the fuck, she didn't even know him! He hadn't even told her his name, for crying out loud. It was then that Alice glanced about her, and immediately stiffened up upon realizing that almost everyone in the immediate vicinity was staring directly at her. "S-sure? Y-yeah, I'll go out w-with you." The girl couldn't stop the quiver in her voice, wishing only for everyone's eyes to be off her. "I S-SAID YES!" She almost yelled at the man in front of her, wanting nothing more than for him to say something in return and for everyone to simply turn back to what they were doing. God, what the hell was she doing!? Edited by Mango, Mar 21 2016, 12:07 AM.

Ryan stared intently at her eyes, pressuring her to say yes, daring her to say anything but yes. It was hilarious, watching her turn shades of red as she tried to process what was going on in her head. He could see how her breathing quickened, how her lips stammered, and how her hands started to busy themselves to make things less awkward. “Please?” he pushed her once more, using those puppy dog eyes that he had used over and over again to get what he wanted, because he was just too damn adorable with them. After moments of cute stuttering and a courageous shout, the girl finally said yes and the crowd clapped for their happiness. The hunter raised his arms in joy and hugged her. “Yay!” he exclaimed in happiness. “Oh erm… This is for you… and this… and this too…” he said, stuffing the flowers, and then the chocolate, and finally the valentine card into her hands one-by-one as if he was nervous all of a sudden. “And I’m Ryan, by the way.” He beamed brightly and stared at the girl a bit more. It was literally the first time he had ever seen her, and she was quite interesting to look at. First of all her white hair was paler than snow but not as pale as her skin. She was thinner than he had originally thought and those red eyes were… they were really red. It reminded the hunter of blood. If he had to describe her in a very concise manner, she would be a killer rabbit but not as feral looking. It was a perfect metaphor because he was a hunter and she was his prey. “You’re very pretty,” he breathed, combing her hair with his fingers. “I’m so glad no one asked you and that you said yes to me,” he grinned in a goofy manner. “Sorry, when I saw you I just kind of… wanted to know you better… Oh umm… this actually weird standing in the middle of the street isn’t it? Do you want to go somewhere more private? Maybe lunch?” he rubbed the back of his neck and looked away give his act a little extra oomph. |

Alice wasn't sure if she had made a good decision or a decision that killed her. Then again, every decision she wasn't 100% certain on tended to give her that feeling. The girl was visibly uncertain when she was abruptly hugged by this young man she didn't even know at all, her mouth completely flat as she rather awkwardly reciprocated. The gifts only served to make her even more paranoid, though she was careful not to show it. The orphan was absolutely not going to eat those chocolates, for sure. Could be poisoned. But with cursory caution came further undue paranoia. What if the letter was actually a bomb? What if the flowers were poisonous? Fuck, what was she supposed to do!? ...Just accept it and go along with it, you idiot. There went the rational part of her brain, telling her to simply go with the flow, despite her paranoid half telling her to run, that she was in danger, that she would die if she accepted the gifts. And so, after a moment of indecisiveness (or so it would appear to the other), Alice simply placed the card in her pocket, holding onto the flowers and chocolates with one in each hand. The albino fucking hated having her hands full like this - it put her in such a vulnerable position, with no way to defend herself. Fuck was she gonna do, throw flowers at potential attackers? This was just a horrible position for her to be in, honestly. But, the short female pushed through it. "Alice." She was just as awkward, if not more, than Ryan, and it made her cringe. Nor did his running his hands through her hair serve to make her any more comfortable than she already was (or wasn't). Either way, the girl supposed she'd have to go on a date with him now - the thought of simply walking off didn't come to mind for whatever reason. "Y-yeah, that's fine." You better not fucking regret this. |

“Where would you like to go?” He leaned forward to meet her eye-to-eye as they walked across the street. Ryan walked close to her, forcing their finger tips and arms to brush against each other over and over again. It was an action that made his blood boil and his hand twitch, but he had learned to deal with it and wait for the appropriate time; whether that would be in an hour or in a week, he would wait patiently and prep for the grand finale. “Joyan, Minstrelian, Bellumese? Have you tried Pergrandian food here? It’s not that bad.” They came across a restaurant that caught Ryan’s eye. “Oh, why don’t we go here?” he pointed. The example menu was divided into 11 sections, one for every country there was on Earthland. Under the titles were popular dishes from every country; Pergrandian smoked ribeye and Minstrelian raw salmon were just a two examples from the menu. It was quiet place for how full it was. There was a long list of people waiting to be seated, but Ryan wasn’t going to let that stop him from squeezing his way in without and RSVP. The hunter called for the manager, flaunted his looks, looked the man straight in the eyes, fluttered his eyelashes, and slipped him some bills. The guy was probably straight but he flushed and skittered away, mumbling something about setting up an extra table for two. That’s a good boy, Ryan thought, smirking from behind. About five minutes later, the impromptu couple was shown to their seats. Ryan pulled the chair out for Alice and pushed her in before seating himself. The hunter skimmed over the appetizers and drinks before he flipped to the Pergrandian section of the menu for a taste of home. A Plov-Uzbek Rice Pilaf and a glass of Merlot sounded good. “Order anything you want,” he smiled warmly at his date. “So, what kind of person are you, Alice? Um… that was weird, wasn’t it? I guess I’m just interested in knowing you better. You can ask me questions too if you want,” he said, resting his chin on the back of his hands, elbows propped up on the table. If Alice had not already regretted her decision, she did now. Something about this guy's charming demeanor, his almost perfect appearance...it put her off. But nothing rung the alarms in her mind so much as the subtle movements and minutiae the young man constantly made - the rubbing of the neck, the constant vacillations of his stride leading his arm to gently brush up against her own, those eyes he seemed to make almost on cue when he asked her something. It caused the hairs on her neck to stand up whenever it happened. In an attempt to perhaps come closer to confirming her paranoia, the girl began to subtely, but consciously withdraw her hand further towards her body each time their fingers brushed (something that actually irritated the girl far more than she had expected it to) to see if he would attempt to move his arm further to compensate. Before she could test this properly, however, he shook her from her musings by asking her a seemingly innocent question - where she wished to go for lunch. A simple question, not-so-simple of an answer. "Uh...you can choose." Alice responded, trying her best not to sound distracted. Almost immediately as they entered the restaurant of choice - admittedly one that the orphan wouldn't mind eating at, had she not been so on edge (moreso than she was normally, at least) - the albino girl's alarms were set off a second time as she witnessed her "date" simply waltz in and flaunt his looks to get in. She knew those types of people, those who thought they could simply get away with anything because they looked pretty. It made Alice's blood fucking boil. But, she went along with it - even if she regretted this immensely, the part of her that was used to survival was reluctant to turn down the offer of free food. It took her a moment to realize the male - Ryan, if she recalled correctly - was offering her into her seat, and he might have sensed a bit of reluctance at the fact that she was being treated so lightly, as if she were a butterfly and her "date" was afraid of so much as brushing the wing. Alice made a weak, partially-forced smile in response to the blonde-haired man's own smile, attempting to keep her ever-growing insecurities and paranoia off her mind by absent-mindedly flipping through the rather ornate-looking menu. Hmm. Mistrelian Sushi sounded interesting, despite the fact that the orphan had never even had sushi before. "I'l have the sushi, please." The snow-haired teen made her best attempt to be polite, smiling at the waitress as she spoke. "Any drink with that, ma'am?" Came the offer. After a moment, Alice decided she didn't want to be irresponsible and order alcohol, particularly whilst she was dealing with the specimen across from her. Part of her mind chastised her for that thought, while the other commended her vigilance. Anxiety was fucking hell. "Just water, thanks. No ice. She responded before leaning back in her chair and sighing to herself. Only a few moments of respite were had before Ryan spoke again, asking her - rather innocently - about herself. Fitting for a date, but Alice wasn't about to give him anything too good. "Oh, me? Well...I'm not really that interesting, to be honest." This was truthful, at least in Alice's mind - in her opinion, she was entirely too focused on solving that riddle than anything else, which slowed her integration into society to an extent, leaving her relatively boring. "I like sewing and knitting, I guess. Not much else interesting I can say without being awkward." She sighed with an air of finality, before leaning forward and making her best attempt to actually be interested in the guy. "Well, what about you? I'm sure you're more interesting." |

“That’s not up to you whether or not you interesting, is it?” Ryan asked, tilting his head just a tad bit in curiosity. “I think sewing and knitting are great skills to have. When I was younger, I was always fascinated and watched my mother knit scarves with pictures and designs,” he said longingly. It was true, he never under stood how a ball of yarn, sticks, and knots could ever make anything, and it always amazed him. But while he did miss watching the motions of sticks tucking and pulling yarn, he did not miss his mother. Rage slowly built up in him, but the hunter concealed it and was actually quite happy when their waitress appeared with his wine; it took his mind off his scum-of-the-whore mother and more on how the pretty red-head would look chained against a wall: potential victim number 26. He graciously thanked her for her service and took a sip of the red wine, appreciating the age, before he turned back to his date. His expression visibly perked when Alice asked about him. He didn’t expect the timid girl to take initiative. “I want to say you give me too much credit, but that would make me a hypocrite wouldn’t it?” he chuckled. “Uhh… let’s see. I’m from Pergrande but I got bored and moved away when I was 16, I think. I’ve went to other countries, but only to pass by. I settled in Minstrel for two years but it was too quiet for me. Now I’m in Fiore and I think it’s perfect.” Also true except for the fact that he didn’t leave because he was bored; he left to get away from his mother. It had been five years since he left and he had not once gone back. The hunter missed the food, the game, the culture, but the country always made him remember unpleasant memories. There were Pergrandian things here but it wasn’t the same as it was back at home. The biggest thing was the live animals that lived abundantly and ferociously; compared to that, Fiore’s wildlife was lackluster. But Ryan wasn’t about to tell Alice that he played with guns in his spare time, it would scare her off. The food rolled about right when the blonde had finished speaking, saving him energy from keeping the conversation going. The pilaf he ordered smelled welcoming and nostalgic. The Pergrandian dish tasted exactly like what he had hoped it to; he was tired of eating dishes that were missing something or somehow altered to fit Fiorean culture. It was almost like he was back in his country. For once his tumultuous mind was calmed. He almost forgot about his murderous intent towards Alice, but good things don’t last long. “How’s your food?” he asked. “It always weird to me how they used raw fish for some of their food. Oh, and you should try some of mine, it’s much better than what I expected,” he offered, genuinely, still under the good influence of the dish. |

Ryan wouldn't realize it, but his "date" was closely studying his every movement in an attempt to gauge the man's thoughts; despite his cheery outward attitude, it seemed to Alice that the blonde was just too bright in his attitude and demeanor, giving out an aura that was so radiant that it was almost overbearing. She didn't like how...perfect he was, how ideal a man he was. Nobody was that perfect. The albino girl knew from experience - the nicest people on the outside were always the ones that were going to stab you in the back and leave you in a gutter to choke on your own blood. Why would that have changed now? Alice pushed a strand of snowy hair out of her eyes, nodding as she took a light sip of her water. Ah, well, even if she wasn't certain of Ryan's intentions, it wasn't as if she couldn't just hold a simple conversation with him. She'd just have to be careful how much she said. "That's nice." The albino wasn't feigning it this time, though she had to herself to smile a bit so she didn't look so straight-faced (Artorius had pointed out the fact that the girl rarely changed facial expressions, so naturally she was trying her hardest to fix it). "I'm also from out of the country, but I only really remember Fiore. I was taken here when I was a child. Definitely a nice place." None of what Alice told her date had been a lie, just...deliberately phrased. At the very least, even if the man did end up having ulterior motives, she would get a free meal and an interesting conversation from it. Her sushi had arrived as she was speaking, and once she had finished, the girl quickly turned her attention to the food in front of her. The pieces were well-arranged in neat little rows with a different meat in each row - shrimp, salmon, steelhead, crab, and even eel. There was no way she'd be able to finish all of this, but Alice supposed she could manage by sharing some with Ryan and taking some with her (which was a given, due to her upbringing). The girl appeared to struggle to use the chopsticks, but eventually found an awkward grip and began eating piece-by-piece, reminding herself to chew slowly - table manners had taken much getting used to after her escape into the world. She found it hard not to simply use her hands, as well as her acquired habit of keeping her head at that slight-yet-perfect angle that allowed her to see and hear movements in a large radius behind one of her shoulders (picked up over years of having to deal with competition for so much as the smallest scraps of food). Before Alice could respond to the blonde-haired male's offer to sample his dish, however, another voice spoke first. "Oye, lad." It came from a large, bearded man at the table next to them, wearing what "I 'eard ye talkin' about why 'em Minstrelians use raw fish in their food, so I'mma let ye in on a sailor's secret. There's 'n ol' Caelemuse b'lief that when ye cook a fish, it gets rid of all th' sea innit. And th' sea, y'see, is what gives us sailors our grit! Ain't no use 'avin a crewman who don't wanna eat raw fish, aye?" The man let out a hearty, booming laugh that reverberated through the room before turning around in his seat, resting an arm on it and grinning at the two, showing off surprisingly white teeth (though some were gold) for someone of his profession. Alice only smiled in return, laughing a bit so it didn't seem like the man was speaking to himself. He seemed genuinely nice, after all. "Wahahaha, so sorry ta interrupt yer meal, I just couldn't keep me big ol' mouf shut. Edward, John Edward. First mate o' the Alexandra, jes' sailed inta port some two days ago. What's yer name, lad?" He asked Ryan, before turning to Alice. "Ah, an' this yer lassie? Forgive th' fishy breath, couldn' quite get th' smell out me mouf. It's a pleasure, Miss...?" "Alice. And I don't mind." The girl replied with a smile. |

Ryan observed entertainingly at his date. Watching her struggle to eat was genuinely hilarious, and cute, and loathsome. The cute lead to the loathsome part, and it sickened him. “I believe its customary to use your hands to eat… uhh… sushi,” he said, sliding in an amused smile. The sudden boom of the Caelemuse sailor’s voice made Ryan jump and lean away from whatever direction it was coming from. At least the food was still in his mouth, and on the fork for that matter, instead of somewhere lodged in his throat when the sailor spoke. Then Ryan just stared at the man without moving, the fork and piece of meat was still in his mouth as he looked and listened with some inner monologue going on in his head, like where the hell did the giant rotting piece of fish come from and if it was speaking English. It sounded like it but… what the hell was a seannit? “Ryyann…” he said, still wondering what was going. “And… that’s pretty interesting. I, personally, rarely have fish since I lived more inland and it was never part of my meals. More of a red meat guy,” he said after regaining his composure. The hunter looked at Alice, without any malicious intent for once, and gave her the ‘do you know this guy’ look. “But I don’t think you sailors get the chance to eat red meat very often out in the sea.” “Aye,” the sailor said. “Ye n’ I liv in two dif’ent worlds,” he observed, looking up and down at Ryan’s attire then at his. Dressed in a pressed black dress shirt and pants with a red tie to bring it all together, Ryan was formal while the sailor in his stained, torn and worn, white attire was not, and of course that beard was a thing. “You hunt the sea while I hunt the land,” he agreed while sipping his wine as opposed to the sailor gulping down his ale. For a second, he regretted saying that. If Alice was paying attention and thinking, she would figure out that Ryan was hunter. While he never hid it from his dates, he never told them about his occupation on their first outing, or second, so they wouldn’t run away. After that second, he calmed down and reminded himself that he lived for the chase. “Well, I s’ppose I’mma see me-self out now. Sorry ta disturb ye,” the sailor said before heading out of the restaurant. “That was—“ “Now don’t list’n to enythang he said,” came another voice and Ryan almost choked this time around. Who was it this time? He thought and looked to see a Midian pirate sitting at the head of their table. “Da true reas’on is this…” |

Alice blinked at her date's comment. Was she eating it wrong? Why would they give her those stick things that were clearly utensils, if she wasn't supposed to eat with them? Something about Ryan's tone just seemed...condescending, as if he were mocking her for trying to eat properly. The girl wasn't about to make assumptions, but she couldn't shake off the vibe coming from the blonde-haired male. Regardless, she shrugged and set her chopsticks down on the table. For a split second, Alice's hand nearly shot out to grab the food out of instinct, before she forced it to stop and instead slowly pick up the individual pieces and pop them into her mouth. She had to get herself under control. As the sailor finished his odd lecture, Alice simply listened, not really knowing what else to say to continue the conversation. Instead, she relegated herself to continuing her meal while Ryan spoke with the man. She was thankful that he was at least talkative, if only to spare her from having to come up with more shit to talk about. What caught the orphan's attention, however, was Ryan's comment about hunting. The alarm level in Alice's head immediately went up a considerable amount upon her hearing this. He was a hunter? The girl's mind began to conjure up images of the "hunters" from her childhood before she pushed those thoughts away, not realizing she had simply stopped eating. No. He's not that kind of hunter. You don't have to worry about those hunters anymore. That's all behind you now. "Listen, dat guy ain't know a thang 'bout da sea." Alice was shaken from her musings by a gruff voice, looking up to realize that not only had the first man left already, but a second man had arrived just as quickly as the first, and began to give his opinion too! The albino never thought she'd see the day where she appreciated someone barging in on a conversation, if only just to shake her from her increasingly worrisome thoughts. Taking a deep breath, Alice continued her meal, listening to the man speak as she focused on taking her mind off her insecurities for the time being. "We eat our fish raw 'cuz when we fin'sh wittem, we sell dey eyeballs an' otha parts to the m'dicinal folks. It ain't a lotta cash, but it adds up o'er time, ya know? Ya cookin' a fish, ya cookin' money." The man rubbed his thumb and forefinger together in front of him as he said this. |
