Varriden walked aimlessly between the stalls, eyeing various goods and wares in the stalls, keeping a sharp look out for anything of magical origin or interest. Wandering the stalls wasn't something he did terribly often - as someone who was part of the local guild, Lamia Scale, and who grew up as a student in Empyrea International, he had a rather abundant amount of resources if he simply desired a magical artifact to examine. The issue was that even the guild and academy combined only had a finite amount of resources and artifacts to spare, and while reading was one of Varriden's pastimes, he decided to take a look through the markets today instead - sometimes it didn't really result in anything, but other times, he managed to stumble across a rare find purely by chance. Last week had certainly been a rare find. He'd run into the girl he'd had a soft spot for from the academy while walking around the town. As they were both browsing the stalls, he had the chance to chat with her a bit, and, emboldened by the season and the positive chat, decided to make a bit of a move - something semi-serious, but that could, perhaps, be played off as a bit of rogue-ish humor if it didn't go well - he took her hand and called her valentine, in the spirit of the holiday season. She giggled, and said she found it funny, but Varriden swore she was blushing a little. Odds of running into her again are low, though, Varriden thought. Unlikely to be here on the same day once again. I could always just visit the academy if I really wanted to meet up with her again, I suppose. |

![]() There were only so many nonsensical situations that one Mallorie Yune could get herself into -- and often times, the quota reached never met the ends. What could a lone Stellar Spirit mage, who was only just starting out, do on her own when traveling through the wide expanse of Fiore? She never really thought this through, after all. She suddenly left Clover Town, where she was born and bred, and now suddenly plunged herself into an extremely dangerous world -- one she had very little true knowledge of. Then again, she wasn't entirely alone -- no, she had Serpens, and although she and the Spirit have spoken from time to time (and have gotten each other out of hilarious and hairy situations), it still stood to suffice that the duo weren't completely on terms. Serpens was a weak Spirit, and Mallorie was no daring mage herself. Things were complicated for the two, and Mallorie had to sustain her want for constant companionship for the sake of her magic reserves. . . . And her wallet. It was sudden chance that the honestly fashion conscious yet non-ostentatious Stellar Spirit mage appeared before Belladona, allowed entrance after conferring with the Knights which guarded the gates on her passing. Sunglasses over her golden eyes, the sal-- poppy red haired teenager scoured the sweltering city as the sun's hissing rays blistered exposed skin. It was luck that had her that she wore light clothing -- though she could bare to wear a little less in this torrid heat. But, she wasn't going to waste time changing -- nor was she going to put her mind to that anyway. With her hand over her head to serve as a visor -- for literally no reason, candidly --, she continued to look around. Eventually, she found herself in the marketplace, and due to her somewhat taciturn nature in a new environment, she neglected to ask any of those hustling and bustling about for directions. . . She sought the Lamia Scale guild though she didn't particularly know how guilds worked proper. She knew a variety of many things, but guilds. . . Were somewhat of an abberation. To an extent, at least. It was during this time that Mallorie wished she had a Stellar Spirit that functioned as a compass. It's only a miracle and thanks to kind drivers here and there that she made it where she was. She's come rather far. . . And at not only the expense of her safety, but her poor Jewels. Ah well, she still had enough to pass on by. She continued to walk, and walk, and walk -- traversing the mining city as her white heels clicked against all forms of masonry, cobblestone, pavement. Staccato after staccato, a steady and patient beat. The marketplace was heavy with many things transpiring all at once. It was an environ immixed with all forms of people -- all types of merchants selling their wares with exuberant personalities, while others simply waited behind stands for consumers to approach. Oddly enough, those who weren't shrieking in one's ear were the kind to attract the most attention. After all, they made their wares speak for them in veracity -- and not the other way around. All these sights and more continued to fill the rose-tinged view of a blinking and frowning Mallorie. Despite it all being somewhat enjoyable, the heat was still vessicating. An inaudible groan escaped her lips, looking to and fro. Perhaps she should eat and entertain herself in the mean time? Could she afford such things? She wished to find a guild and quickly begin on becoming stronger, taking on jobs, and perhaps finding a place to call home. . . She had a very important promise she needed to keep, one she honestly didn't wish to dredge up. Respiring profoundly, she found herself at an impasse -- mostly with herself. And so she gyrated in place as she looked from path to path, stall to stall -- she was entirely indecisive. To waste Jewels, or to keep going? "What a mess. . ." She whispered, slightly frustrated. |

Varriden himself was glancing from stall to stall, though with far less stress than Mallorie, as his own financial situation wasn't nearly as dire - he wasn't rich, far from it, but enough that he could afford the occasional purchase without having to worry about breaking the bank. Thus far, nothing out of the ordinary, Varriden thought, seeing what the stalls had to offer. Not that there weren't oddities and other interesting magical pieces, just that they were ones that Varriden had already seen before at some point, or studied in the past through a direct examination or from a discussion of it through books and other texts. He wouldn't be disappointed much if he couldn't find anything that caught his eye - he had left the markets before without actually buying anything, though of course, the merchants had tried to talk him into making a decision otherwise. and Varriden wasn't inclined to blame them - it was their livelihood, after all. He did notice Mallorie glancing from stall to stall, though - alot of people in the markets tended to browse, as the variation on goods was what brought people here to shop, even Varriden himself was no exception to that. But she didn't look like she was just glancing at a few key stalls, her gaze seemed to be wandering all over the place. Don't suppose that she's lost, perhaps? Varriden thought. Belladonna can seem like a maze to people who are visiting it for the first time, what with all the intertwining walkways that go between the buildings. Varriden walked up to the girl from behind - if only because approaching from the side would have meant smashing through a crowd of people also trying to shop, and trying to approach her from the front would have involved a sprint through the back of multiple stalls - and tapped her on the shoulder with one hand. "Excuse me, miss, but can I assist you in some manner? If you don't mind me saying so, you seem rather distressed about something. Are you trying to find something particular? Or someone particular?" Varriden said, the last bit because it occurred to him that she might have gotten separated from someone else in the crowds - again, not a rare thing in Belladonna. |

OOC A shopping crises was one of the few (in fact, many) things that riled Mallorie up from within, her mind becoming a heavy stream of consciousness that distracted her from most outside forces. Though, she still held some semblance of wariness -- if only due to the throngs of people passing by her, perhaps jostling by her as well. With her pack near her, her frown only began to aggrandize. Exhaling, she retrieved a map of the city once more and tried to make sense of it, turning it about and sideways, trying to see if she could not mess up and suddenly walk off a bridge. Hilariously enough, that almost happened once -- and she luckily managed to summon Serpens in time before she fell to her doom. The tap on the shoulder wasn't expected. Turning about, Mallorie met the eyes of Varriden and started back a step, completely nonplussed. She never expected anyone to talk to her, though considering that she's in public and appears to be mulling over things, she should've expected it. The man before her began to ask her if she needed help looking for something or another, and Mallorie furrowed her brow. However, soon her countenance relaxed and a small smile graced her veneer, lowering her map. "Ah, well," She began, scratching her head. A glint from the hoop around her wrist immediately dubbed and classified her as one of the many elusive Stellar Spirit mages. "I'm actually looking for a job -- err, well, the Lamia Scale guild, in fact. I don't know, this whole exploring thing is new to me," She then began to mumble to herself as she looked over the map again, and again, and again -- and to some it may have seemed rude. After all, she was virtually ignoring the person that was helping her, and upon realizing this, she dropped her map down quickly again -- though she didn't exactly drop it. Maps are expensive! . . . ish. "Do you by any chance know where it is?" She questioned. Mallorie assumed Varriden was some kind of resident of Belladona. He sort of looked the part, anyway. It should be noted that it seems as though Mallorie had assumed that she'd already ingratiated herself with Varriden, and she was being rather casual at this point. While she waited for his reply, she'd have her hands behind her back as she looked him straight in the eye and wondered what he would say. After all, he did seek to help her, so maybe this won't turn out terrible like other situations! |

As Varriden approached, the girl appeared to pull out a map of some sort and began looking at it - well, if she brought a map along, it means she wasn't completely unprepared for this little trip, Varriden thought. I can certainly understand thinking you know where you're headed when you're planning a trip, but then getting turned around once you're actually there. When Varriden tapped her on the shoulder, she took a step back and turned to look at him - couldn't blame her for the step back, he supposed, as people traveling alone need to take precautions not to get caught unawares by the wrong kind of people - though the furrowed look she gave him briefly was a bit of an eyebrow-raiser. Like there was some internal struggle regarding him assisting her that she had to go over the pros and cons mentally before deciding if she should say anything further about what she was looking for, or whom. If not for her openly wearing her stellar spirit keys, marking her as a summoner mage, and her brief explanation that followed, he would have guessed that she was playing things a little close to the vest. However, she was in luck - the person who asked if she needed help happened to have the solution for her. "If it's the Lamia Scale guild you're looking for, you've asked the right person." Varriden rolled up the sleeve on his right arm to reveal the Lamia Scale emblem. "I happen to be a member." Varriden let the sleeve fall back down, saying "If you want, I can guide you there." Varriden wasn't quite sure if she'd seen the emblem, though, as she happened to glance at her map again just as they got to talking. |

With her mouth slightly agape, forming a small 'o'-shape, Mallorie's eyes were guided to Varriden's right arm, where the illustrious and unique Lamia Scale emblem was emblazoned onto his epidermis. Her brows bobbed and in that same second realization dawned on her that this person was, well, exactly who she was looking for! It's almost as if the Heavenly Bodies were guiding her in this moment. Perhaps she was meant to join Lamia Scale? Or perhaps there was something else there -- something she wasn't entirely sure. Frowning for a brief moment, she wondered about that. . . Joining a guild was a big deal in the mage world -- something nearly intractable. Swearing fealty to a mage's guild was putting one's own life on the line, after all. But then again, she sought to become a great mage. . . Stardust seemed to glimmer in her golden irises as she clasped her hands together, her map falling in that instance. "Ah, whoops--" She said, grasping at the map, rolling it up, and depositing it into her bag. "Can't lose that," She mentioned, before clearing her throat with a fist to her mouth, her left hand where her key resided behind her back. "Anyway, uhm -- sure! Lead the way, uh," Then, she brought up her left hand, pointing to the glistening, jagged, and ornate serpent-like key hooked to the hoop around her wrist. "I'm a Stellar Spirit mage," She explained, as if it wasn't obvious enough. "I haven't gotten many keys yet -- err, well, this one was a gift," Assuming that Varriden began to lead the way, Mallorie would proceed to go on and on about Stellar Spirits at a locomotive rate, to the point where this young girl perhaps knew a bit too much about everything. In fact, it was no surprise that her conversation on Stellar Spirits, their contracts, and other things in relation to them quickly devolved into the constitution of trees, the formation of the lands, why the sky is blue, the creation of clouds, the diversity in magic, and many other things that seemed to be far too complex to explain. It was undoubtable that this young girl had eaten far too many books in her life. Except, she never ate any books! This much was also evident. . . "I never really had much of a gift for magic," She'd go on to explain. "In Clover Town, I went to a private academy because my parents were mages," She continued, each heel clicking and blending in with her tale. "Things didn't work out. I never got the hang of it, but eventually I saw a Stellar Spirit in action -- and I thought, 'that's it'," Giggling, she looked at the silver key with adoration. "Eventually, mama and papa gifted me this key, and we've been together ever since -- about, mmm, eight months?" She clearly had no idea. Having been out traveling for so long made her lose eventual lack of time. It was kind of a mystery how she'd survived for so long so far. "So how's it like being in a guild?" Was her true question, looking to Varriden expectantly. |

The girl, despite her brief pouring over the map in mid-conversation, did indeed catch sight of Varriden's Lamia Scale tattoo, her mouth forming a small 'o' of surprise. Though Varriden was slightly flattered at the thought, he was mildly surprised that she would get such a shock out of running into a Lamia Scale mage here - this was the city where the guild hall was located, after all. Maybe she just thought that she wouldn't be fortunate enough to run into one of the mages when trying to find the guild hall itself, he thought. She clapped her hands together - presumably in delight - which caused her to drop the map, which she fumbled after for a moment before snatching it off the ground and stuffing it back into her bag so it wouldn't part company from her again. That done, she took Varriden up on his offer of showing her how to get to the guild hall, since he obviously knew where it was, being a Lamia Scale mage. When she faltered briefly, Varriden said "Varriden, Varriden Stone. A pleasure to meet you, miss....?" he said, extending a hand to shake while also raising one eyebrow, curious as to the girl's own name. She did explain that she was a Stellar Spirit mage - somewhat obvious from the keys, but proving you were a mage was an important part of being allowed to join a mage guild, after all. "It's alright that you don't have as many keys as you'd like," Varriden said, holding up one hand reassuringly when she tried to explain her key situation to him. "Every mage starts out somewhere. Even I didn't have any techniques at all Archived when I first joined the guild, but they didn't mind that, and now I've acquired quite a few to my name from other mages." Varriden began leading the way to the guild, listening to the girl chat on about stellar spirits and other subjects. Most people might have found it exhausting to keep up, but Varriden tended to absorb knowledge like water. He found that he always gained more from knowing more, regardless of the circumstances. Even less-than-pleasant truths were better than knowing nothing at all on a subject. Eventually, she brought up her origins - Clover town, where she'd gotten her first key and realized her attachment to spirits. When asked what it was like to be in a guild, Varriden said. "It's very nice. You get access to the guild's resources, like Lamia Scale's library, and you get to go on missions to help other people, building both your own skills and the guild's reputation at the same time. If I might ask, though, what's it like having a spirit companion? I've never had one, so it's an area I'm unfamiliar with." |

Somewhere along the line, Mallorie certainly got lost in the conversation the two were sharing. So much so that she forgot her manners and didn't properly introduce herself. "Oh! Right -- my name is Mallorie Yune," She finally mentioned with a gleaming grin, before resuming her fall-into-step with Varriden. He didn't seem like someone who was dangerous. . . At least, not in a negative light. Hopefully, they could become good friends! But in the mean time, Mallorie wanted to explore the world of guilds a bit more. She doubted that joining was going to be a simple task, but perhaps someday she'd be able to. After all, a mage wasn't a mage without a guild tethered to them! Besides. . . . How else was she supposed to make money? Indeed, sooner or later Mallorie's Jewels will deplete and become nothing. It was a reality of her situation as a lone mage -- or well, technically lone. She had Serpens, but the Stellar Spirit didn't have Jewels to her name. All Serpens could offer was protection, assistance, and perhaps some wisdom -- and speaking of wisdom and knowledge, Mallorie noted that Varriden was an Archive mage, but only after he mentioned it. "Archived?" If Mallorie was to assume correctly, Varriden might as well be a supremely rare breed of mage -- an Archive mage! That was perhaps just as rare, or much more atypical than Mallorie's own Stellar Spirit magic. Keys were easy to find -- at least Silver keys were. But Archive mages weren't, and their skill proved to be heavily multitudinous, especially with practice. Witnessing and recording another mage's aspects and magic could certainly prove to be useful in any situation readily available. "Well, if it really is that amazing. . . Mm, perhaps joining a guild may be for me after all," It seems as though she hasn't fully decided. As she'd already thought about various times, joining a guild was like tying the knot -- her choice meant everything and defined her. Maybe Lamia Scale would be that guild? She wasn't sure, and she isn't going to be sure until she sees how the guild operates, and what it ultimately has to offer. After all, she can't judge the guild simply on how Varriden conducts himself. There was far much more to it than that. "Being with a Stellar Spirit, uh. . ." She pressed her finger tips together as they continued walking, inching ever so closely to the guild. She kept aware of her surroundings, for the most part -- just in case she ever needed to return, or if she decided to join the guild anyway. "A Stellar Spirit is viewed in many different ways, honestly," She explained. "They could be seen as tools, or companions. . . And they can be used for many things. Uh, they also have many iterations, forms, and personalities -- depending on the mage, all these things are constructed. It's why contracts with Stellar Spirits are so specific -- and then there are the set rules that they need to follow. It's kind of complex, but I think being with Serpens might be the best thing to ever happen to me," And not just because the spirit had succored her from ridiculous situations. "I suppose I view Serpens more as an ally than anything else -- I can fight for myself, but it's a lot easier to fight with a partner," Though Mallorie carried no visible weaponry -- in fact, it was far more likely that she didn't have one at all. Did she just use her fists? Did she direct Serpens' attacks? Did she fuel Serpens with her own magical power, thus buffing the spirit up? It was uncertain -- but it was likely she used her fists, and very well, at that. |

Varriden introduced himself to the lady, who introduced her own self as one Mallorie Yune. As they walked, Mallorie did bring up the subject he'd hinted at in his mention of his own magic. "Yes, Archived. My own magic, Archive, allows me to study and copy the magics of other mages, though of course, there are limitations bound to such a magic - your own magic, for example," he said, gesturing to the keys around the chain. "I would be able to copy the magic used by your summons, to some extent, but I wouldn't actually be able to perform the spell you use to draw forth the summon in the first place - aside from lacking a key of my own, I don't possess a contract with any of your spirits - or spirits at all, for that matter." "But yes, guilds have all kinds of magic and mages," Varriden said. "Archives, Takeovers, Summoners, all types." Mallorie explained about how summons had been viewed in the past briefly. "Yes, I've seen a number of different approaches on how people can view their summons. Some as friends, others as mere weapons, which is more common with the ones that don't speak or that lack defining features. Usually that's the case more with dolls - just collections of magic that are controllable, but don't actually possess any will or sentience of their own - but sadly, some people don't make the distinction. Thankfully, though, no one in Lamia Scale that I know of thinks that way, and some stern words would be had if they did." She mentioned her connection to her own summon, Serpens, which caught Varriden's attention. "Interesting. I don't suppose you mind if I saw the summon once we got to the guild hall, would you?" Varriden asked. In truth, he would have liked to see it then and there, but he had told the girl he'd lead her to the guild, and interrupting that for his own interests would be rather rude - namely, Archiving magical spells. |

It seems as though the interlocution between the two never faced a head -- one thing was always replied by the other, and everything they said seemed to fall into place like the steps they took towards the guild. Varriden was interesting! This much, Mallorie agreed it. Unfortunately, she wasn't entirely sure how much time she had with him. Would she stick around and eventually join Lamia Scale? Or would she continued her excursion across Fiore to pursue and accomplish her dreams? There was also the matter of acquiring more keys on her mind, something she really wished to proceed with. . . But now wasn't exactly the time. No, she needed to fit her bond with Serpens a bit more before she acquired a new partner. Varriden proceeded to explain his magical expertise to Mallorie, all things she already knew, but his explication was graced with nods of assent and thin smiles as he went along. Naturally, he could copy a varied amount of magic -- but not Mallorie's, something else she also. . . Sort of knew! Well, actually, she didn't exactly know that bit -- but well, you learn something new every day! Even so, it seemed as though Mallorie knew where Varriden was getting at at this point. . . But she allowed him to continue speaking before she made her assumptions known. If he wished for Mallorie to call Serpens for the purpose of Archiving her magic, that might prove a bit difficult. . . After all, it was important to honor contracts between mage and spirit -- but perhaps an exception can be made. . . Maybe. And so, Varriden continued along with his speech on Lamia Scale, and how he'd known of Summoners being crass and callous with their own Summons, simply because there was no humanoid identifiable feature. Mallorie supposed she could agree to an extent. . . But she was sure that they could see past that if they allowed themselves to. Humans of all kinds find love with animals -- platonic love which fuels them and makes them beatific. If they could find this in their furry companions, then certainly they could do so in other beings that fight for them, protect them, and may ultimately die for them! Although, Stellar Spirits can't die, so Mallorie was rather happy about that! Although seeing Serpens disappear like oil in water always struck a nerve in Mallorie's chest -- something she wished she could avoid witnessing. . . "Well," She began. "We like dogs, cats, and other animals, right? And they don't really do much for us except make us happy," She shrugged. "So why can't that same logic be applied to beings that put their livelihood on the line for us? The most we could do is respect that," She exhaled as they continued to walk, ever so closer to the guild. It was then that Varriden dropped the question, and Mallorie stopped in her tracks, heels skidding to a halt. She folded her arms, and looked to the sky, clouds swimming by in the seemingly endless ocean of the ozone. ". . . Well, I suppose I can," She offered, though tentatively. "Stellar Mages and spirits. . . Well, some spirits -- or no, many spirits --- have days where they prefer to be summoned, when they're most available. It's. . Mm," She looked to Serpens' key as it glinted. Mallorie's eyes widened slightly, before nodding. "Okay -- when we get to the guild hall, then! For now, let's go!" She exclaimed, jutting her arm out with her pointed index finger, rushing along briskly and past Varriden. Even though they may get close, if Varriden doesn't guide her, she's sure to get lost. |
