That One Guy
|
~Prologue~ Esper was born in Magnolia but raised outside it in the east forest by his parents in a comfy and moderately sized cottage. When traveling home one day with his parents from their shop in Magnolia, which had recently risen to the ranks of the top mageware shop, their carriage was attacked by hired bandits. Injured and dying he laid on the ground staring at the lifeless bodies of his parents. After the death of his parents, which have left a number of emotional scars, Esper has always wondered about the identities of those bandits and has never gotten the satisfaction of bringing them to justices or exacting revenge. Having finally left his house in the forest to Magnolia is approached by a strange wizard, who tells him out of nowhere he knows the truth of the identity of his parents assassins and was lead to him through her clairvoyance magic. However she will only reveal that information if he gathers a party and goes to a goblin cave to retrieve a special pouch containing pure magic dust. Taking her at her word he shockingly accepts the quest in exchange for the information. Putting up a paid help wanted Ad for fellow mages he awaits in a pub in hopes of gathering a party. Esper knowing that in order to help guarantee success they will need to work together and know what each other is capable of, suggesting they do some additional magic and team training to develop their skills and knowledge before heading off the next day. ~Discover the Truth~ Esper ran his agile fingers over the rough black stubble on his chin. Just a moment ago, it had been a rather glorious beard, falling in waves to his sash. Magic had made short work of it, and now he could comfortably run a razor over what remained. Having lived in the forest for so long he had let it. Sitting in the chair he would change his mind and let the wizard with his magic finish off the last of the hair on his face and touch up his hairdo, the barber putting away his sheers giving him final reassurance that the money was worth it as he dusted off what hair had fallen onto Espers shoulders, “There you go Esper. After a month the hair on your head and face will start to grow at a natural pace again as requested. Until then it will seem as if you have gotten a fresh cut and shave.” Esper getting up could hear moving about the shop beyond the firm wooden entrance of the chambers he stood in. Showy laughter overflowing through the shop as its front door opened, and then shut. He glanced covertly at the chamber entrance, a doorless room, not knowing precisely why he was uneasy. He had only gotten his beard shaved clean and his hair trimmed after all; a perfectly normal thing for an adult to do. Leaving the shop he’d make his way back to the inn near his apartment he worked out. While he had money left over from his parents and from selling their shop he didn’t want to become lazy, plus working at an inn allowed him to hear of jobs and guilds while making a bit of extra coin. Esper stretched his back with a groan, flexing his shoulders to ease his cramped muscles from a hard day’s work. Tossing a soapy bar rag into a bucket he glanced around the room. The inn itself was a popular one but it was old and keeping it up was difficult, but neither love nor elbow grease could hide the fissures and ruptures in the well-used tabletops or prevent a customer from sitting on an occasional chip. The Harvest Inn being named after the Harvest Festival was not as fancy as others but it was comfortable and centrally located between guilds, shops and provided prime location for festivals and events, thus its name. The bar seemed to ebb and flow like a refined upsurge around the magically enchanted wood that supported it. The stained glass windows pans’ depicting dragons and wizards casting spells performed welcoming flares of vibrant color across the room. Shadows growing spread across the inn made stronger by the fire being lit as evening approached. Espers shift would soon be over as he looked around and nodded in acceptance of a job well done. The tables were clean and the floors polished to a shine. All he had to do was fill the salt and pepper shakers. Moving about the inn he refilled the shakers on the tables as Toldir, the owner, appeared from the kitchen behind the bar cloaked in an aromatic fog, the light from the fireplace accenting his dark brown skin as he danced around with his massive and bulky body. Esper thought to himself just how perfect Toldir was when it came to an owner and server. A man known for being friendly and a very helpful person who was always looking out for others, someone you could rely on and vent to as he looked with intrigue from his brown eyes and kind face with a brown goatee. “Go ahead and clock out Esper. You did well today. Should be a busy night with winter starting to set in it’s going to be a cold one and everyone will want out famous spiced hot cider and multi-colored boar meat and vegetable stew. Go ahead and have an order on the house as well.” |

Taking off his apron he’d be delighted to hear Toldirs offer as the front door opened. An old woman stood draped in grey robes with a brown wizard’s hat that clashed with the robes. She hoisted in the doorway, leaning on a shabby maple staff, and gazed around the Inn. The hat having a huge brim obscured the features of her face except for her intelligent, shinning eyes. Shambling inside she’d take a seat in the back after whispering to Esper along her path. “Meet me in the back. I have information for you Esper.” She looked with particular interest at the fireplace as she sat in the back, which stood about ten feet from the table she now occupied. Grabbing his food and drink that had been offered to him by Toldir he’d go sit with the woman in the back. Now closer he could see she was quite old with wrinkled skin, small eyes and bony hands. Long stretched earlobes with shiny diamond earrings were muddled by the long gray hair falling haphazardly around them. Curiosity taking over him he would begin to speak with her. “Who are you and what do you want with me?” It was a valid question since Esper didn’t know anyone from the city other than his boss and a few inn patrons. Before he could speak again with a follow up question the woman would pull out a scrying orb as a stream of golden magic spun inside the orb in a torrent and replied. “I’m in need of your help. I’m a seer, scry, an operator of clairvoyance magic. There is a goblin, a witch, which has stolen something from me. This witch stole a special pouch containing very rare, pure magic dust and I need this dust as a spell component in order to get more detailed visions. However with my age I am in no shape to travel or do battle, you are though! I used my magic to locate someone who might be of use and in my visions I saw past events. In these events I saw the death of your parents and those responsible. You have lived a lie thinking it was just a random occurrence that your parents died to bandits but the truth is they were hired assassins. If you gather a party to go get me backs my spell components then I will give you the location of the bandit’s hideout.” Staring blankly Esper sat in silence at this new information from the mysterious woman. He was usually expressionless and very rarely did he get upset or enthusiastic, however, this was a time where it was minimally showing on his face. Using his gift granted by his skewed emotional outlook he would ascertain that the woman was non-hostile and that she was telling the truth. Normally a distrusting person this would be a rare occurrence for him to believe someone, especially someone so mysterious and out of nowhere. Accepting her offer he’d bid her farewell after getting information on where to locate her and the location of the goblin witch before posting up an Ad on the adventurers board in the Inn.

Mago really hated when people skipped town. It just wasn't a good move. First they decided to piss of Raven Tail, or they owed a debt of some kind. Then, after somehow evading them in Trillium they ran.... like hell Raven Tail wouldn't catch them. All they did was prolong their beating, oh and they pissed off the guild even more. Mago himself was a little angry about it initially, but he managed to vent on his victim. Him and Fukumura walked along, the sun was setting and they'd have to find a place to set in for the night.... luckily they came across the one inn that looked open. Given the inn was empty.... and seemed to be closing, but whatever. Fukumura entered first, crossing into the threshold and pushing the door hard enough to allow Mago enough time to step in. The red haired mages hands were in his coat pockets, he looked rather tired. Fukumura looked around. There were two people talking in the back at some table, and a big guy but that was it. The place was dead silent. Mago remained quite, he figured they'd be addressed first.... either that or Fukumura would do enough talking for the both of them. "So.... uh.... are you guys open? Cause like.... we need a place to stay for tonight. You know, guild jobs taking us across all of Fiore and what not. Anyway? Any free rooms me and Mago can share a be-" Mago's hand shot out of his pocket and clamped over Fukumura's mouth. He gave the kid an evil stair then spoke "We aren't sharing a bed..... and not a room either if they have two open" Mago spoke coldly and bitterly. He looked at the big guy for an answer. He wasn't going to rephrase it or anything, that was his way of asking for two rooms. He had been with Fukumura for what was going on forty eight hours..... that was way to long. Sure he could put up with him during the day, but most of the time he could go nap i his room whenever he wanted to escape. But now that they were on a mission.... yeah he was stuck with him. They'd chased the guy for awhile, and finally got to him in Magnolia.... they were on their way back from that adventure. All Mago wanted to do was sleep, and maybe smoke... but he would avoid that later activity for now. Most inns didn't exactly like cigarette smoke anyway. Mago figured while they were out they could get another job before returning to the guild. Nothing that required him to chase a man through the hot springs though.... that was just awkward. |

Toldir, the owner, would take to moving to the new pair that had entered his Inn. Most all his other staff was already gone as it was a quite night. The Inn whoever was going to be up late by request of some patrons coming into town later. HIs apron was filled with stains as if he had just got done removing the fat off brisket. The smell would be quite aromatic and pleasing to the senses, something he was betting on as he wore it proudly walking through the open space to the table to address Mago and Fukumura. With a laugh he'd make light of their interactions with one another. "Hahahaha......Yes...Yes, we are open and if you're interested we just got done making a great stew made with spiced potatoes, spicy cheddar and boar meat but we only have two luxury suites left and they aren't for free. We are a popular Inn after all!" Toldir was rather polite as he spoke and when speaking of his inn he'd light up with great pride as he continued to speak placing down cold mugs of water with shaved ice. Before waiting for an answer he'd continue to speak as if he just realized something as he snapped his fingers, his strong hands creating a loud thunderous bang. "If you're short on money I actually have a friend who is looking for mages to help him with a quest and is paying. I don't know the details but there is an Ad up on the adventurers board about it. Look for the one signed bye a man named Esper. In fact if you two help him I'll put up two in both rooms and tonight's meal is on the house. He's a great fellow. He's currently sitting over there by the fireplace having a chicken sandwich with wine if you end up accepting the job. If you don't then there are other jobs on the board." ------------ Meanwhile Esper would sit in his corner eating a sandwich going over the map and reading a book on goblin lore. |

Money wasn't a problem. Hell they were part of the richest guild in Fiore... but that doesn't mean they'd turn down free stuff. "We already ate....." Mago said, it was his way of refusing the meal. The guy really was huge, it was almost intimidating. To bad Mago really didn't get intimidated easily. "We aren't short on cash but.... what's the job? Like if we get free stuff I'm not turning it down. Mago let's go help this guy, besides we can use the extra cash. You know, since the guilds allowance is running low this month" "That's cause you wasted it all on food" "What was I supposed to do? Not eat the delicacies of each city we've visited? You know what they say. When in Bellum do as the Bellumese do" Fukumura responded and turned his nose away. "Sampling is fine but you take it to another level. Who fuckin' eats twenty taco's by themselves?" "Whaat?! It's not even my fault I'm growing! Sheesh, like you're one to talk. Mister alcoholic. Half of our allowance goes to your many beers" Well played Fukumura. Mago sighed and just walked back to Esper, who was eating and reading. "Oi." Mago made their presence known. "You the kid loonkin' for help with somethin'? Mago rudely asked. Standing over Esper. "Cause we can help you.... probably. We're mages so we're used to taken jobs. What's the pay for it?" |

Getting derailed from his reading Esper would look up at Mago. His blood red hair and his harsh gaze might would be unnerving to some but to Esper they just meant he might have what it takes. Besides the fact he looked more powerful than himself, at least physically being a bit taller and heavier in build. "Yes I am looking for help. Are you two guild mages? The job might be a little dangerous but I'll pay well. Right now I can offer X jewels (ooc your jewel reward). It's a little bit of a story so I'll try to condense it. Basically my parents were killed when I was younger as part of a hit job. I recently came into knowledge of someone who has information on where they are located but in order to get this information I have to go retrieve some spell components that were taken from her. These components are held in a pouch being guarded by a goblin witch. Well that's the short version of it. Basically I need someone to go with me to get the components so this mage can use her clairvoyance magic. After that I'd like to go take out these assassins if you'll stick around, assuming you take the job." If you need any specifics just ask. I"ll answer anything you want to know." Esper was quite blunt and honest but in a soft spoken way as to not agitate Mago since his first comments were quite abrupt and he didn't have a harsh demeanor about himself. Motioning his hand forward he'd wave to the other two seats at his table for Mago and his companion to sit. "I should probably fully introduce myself. I'm Esper d'Vadalis and I'm a spatial mage just starting out." |

The explained his mission, and how much they'd be paid. Mago sighed and took a seat next to the guy, Fukumura doing the same. "If you're paying that much we'll stick through till the whole things over.... I don't know about any fuckin' goblins or nothin' but we can help" Mago grunted out, it seemed pretty straight forward to him. Kill this goblin, get some information, kill some assassins. He understood this guys want for revenge, after all he had people he wanted dead himself.... that list just seemed to be growing the more time he spent as a Raven Tail mage.... ah well. No matter how big it was h'ed find a way to kill them all, the people that were at the top of his list came first of course. "Alright so, we get this information and go after these assassin guy's right? Should be easy enough.... we're guild mage so yeah. Anyway. I'm Fukumura and that charmer over there is Mago. I use wind magic and he uses fire... uh we're part of the Raven Tail guild. Hope that won't be a problem Esper.... anyway. Me and him are both pretty experienced mages. We've fought our fair share of battles, so rest assure we'll be able to help you... hell we could eve get some information for you if you needed. Of course that'd probably cost extra. Anyway, yeah so when are we heading out? Cause we're as ready as ever.... though it'd be nice if we could get some sleeping in. We're just coming back from a mission see.... debt collecting and such, chased that fucker all the way down here. So we're just a little tired..... after all we've been up for about three days straight" Fukumura explained and then yawned. Mago waited to see Esper's response to all that information, remaining rather quiet. His cold eyes examined the man who claimed to be a mage.... he didn't look very strong. But looks could be deceiving.... |

Esper lowing his head would give a sigh of relieve with minimal expression. Inside he was quite happy and worried at the same time. Happy he'd get to have some closure if everything panned out and worried because this would a real test of his willpower, life and magic. Esper didn't mind much at how rough the two were or their language even as he for the most part didn't have the strongest of emotions, which might come in hand when worming with mages who might find him more of a hindrance having to babysit him. Raising his head back up he'd nod in acceptance before replying, putting on a smile and scratching the top of his head in a almost innocent demeanor. "Thank you. It's a pleasure to meet the two of you. Fukumura and Mago...I'll remember those names. Raven tail hrm...That guild is located in Trillium correct? Can't say I know much about that mage guild other than you have a thing against governments right? Sadly most of my knowledge of the Mage Guilds comes from books and magazines instead of personal experiences. Anyways, yes! The tactical thing to do would be to get some rest and in the morning maybe do a bit of training together. While I do believe you two are strong I am new when it comes to magic and we should know what all we are capable of so that we don't clash and can better coordinate with one another. A team that works together - wins together." Waiting for a reply Esper would write down an address and draw a well drawn map to a location just outside the city leading to the east forest that they could meet for a little bit of training, assuming they accepted the premise of his tactics. After all where Esper lacked in personal experience he made up for in his intelligence and analytical skills. The map itself was rather accurate and "pretty". He wasn't an artist or anything it's just his spatial awareness allowed him to better give directions (cantrip?). |

The man was nice. He held himself well, and spoke softly and politely. He was almost the exact opposite of Mago. The King of Diamonds listened to what his new companion had to say, as he explained that he didn't know much about guilds. Guess him and Mago were similar in that way.... Mago hadn't ever been interested in such things, hell the only guild he knew anything about was Tartaros up until he met Tokio. It was a chance encounter, Mago had just been napping in a field of flowers. Then here comes Tokio, chasing some poor guy that owed money to the guild. Mago had just woken up in time to watch as his dear friend shot the man right in the leg..... At the time it was rather strange. Mago didn't know what to think of it all. He knew of the Raven Tails existence but he didn't know what they did.... he assumed it was like Tartaros and proceeded carefully. Of course that wasn't true at all, in the end Mago joined the guild because it was a new home for him.... kind of. He joined mostly because Tokio had asked. But before he had become a part of the guild he knew nothing of them, all he knew was that he really, really, did not like those Fairy Tail mages that had killed his friends so long ago. Oh and Tartaros.... he hated Tartaros a lot.... well he hated the city of Coreopsis as a whole.... though he tended not to harbor ill will towards Tartaros' mages. After all two out of the three that he had met were.... let's say they were on another level. "Something against governments? That tends to happen when you're a criminal organization...." Mago commented, not improving his guild reputation at all. "Well..... we're kind of like a big gang. Well more like a company really. We protect the people of Trillium and just make sure people pay what they owe mostly, sure we sell illegal goods and whatever on the side but it's not like we're going around crushing people for no reason..... that's what Tartaros does" So that last statement wasn't exactly true... but true enough to hold water. Then Esper got back to the main reason these two completely different people were interacting, the mission. "Let's get something straight.... we may be stronger then you but we're still only D class in the guild world. So don't expect me ta' go blowin' up a city block" Mago felt the need to clarify that. After all, it'd be problematic if that got into a situation where they were way too out gunned. "Anyway, we can train but like.... I don't want to hurt you or anything so I might not be able to go all out.... last time I Tornado Kicked a non mage it didn't work out well for him" Fukumura said with a laugh and a nervous smile, rubbing the back of his head. Mago just sighed and waited for Esper to respond. He looked at the map and nodded at the spatial mage. "Sounds good..... but sleep first. Then training" OOC
