"Good, good, I like the spirited ones!" Esmeralda let loose a deep, rumbling belly laugh at Nanashi's straight-laced answer, her eyes sparkling merrily. Arianna, in contrast, had slowly begun attempting to inch away in order to find an excuse to escape. Unfortunately for the pink-and-brown haired girl, she was quickly caught up under the owner's arm and dragged back into the conversation. "Ari, girl, you'll be our witness of course, won't you?" Suppressing a shiver that very nearly bordered on a cringe, Arianna rapidly considered her options. Considering it was the boss lady asking, there wasn't very many of them. So, slowly, she nodded her head in agreement. It was best to tell her what she wanted to hear, anyway - it wasn't as if Esmeralda would actually let her not do something once she'd made up her mind that Arianna would volunteer. "Sure, Esma-san. It should be educational." "Excellent! Lately I've been hearing news of those fiends causing trouble again on the southwestern outskirts of town. I think it's about time we taught them a couple of things about curfews, don't you think?" Arianna's eyes rolled in Nanashi's direction where Esmeralda wasn't looking, as if attempting to warn him that he had just gotten himself into a tiresome situation. After all, it was the rare and truly unusual person who considered the nomadic band of striped, horned music-loving equestrians that frequently passed near the city to be worthy of addressing directly. Who would have thought that noise violations would have lead to extermination requests of the notorious Heavy Metal Unicorns, after all? "Come, young hunter! The hunt awaits! I'll explain the challenge at hand once we've arrived and surveyed the setting of our venture!" Without further ado, the woman dragged Arianna by the shoulder and departed from the cafe, beckoning for Nanashi to follow as they approached the exit to town. Once outside, she lead them to a flat, rolling plain where a moderately unusual sight could be seen - Beer cans, various spent lacryma crystals, and an assortment of partially eaten meals could be seen surrounding what was quite obviously a low-set stage, complete with a drum set, microphone, and two guitars - or was it a guitar and a bass? It was difficult to tell - leaning against a pair of lacryma-powered amps. Not far away, what clearly appeared to be four silver-white horses were sprawled out in the grass. Closer inspection revealed that each possessed a horn of the same silvery white, and what appeared to be faded black-and-white striping criss-crossed it's way up their legs and flanks. One of the horses, which was, it appeared, currently idly grazing nearby, also possessed the most unusual mane - the unicorn's mane extended up partially past it's horn in what could only be explained as an affro, from which only the tip of it's horn was revealed. Also of note was an array of blackened portions of the grass, where some form of paper cartridges were arrayed seemingly at random, each with a small lacryma crystal at it's base. "Aye, so here we are, the beasties den. Though they dennae look like much, they're actually quite a troublesome breed, and hunting their like is more difficult than you might expect. They be called Metacorns, aye, or so they were when I was still a girl. Typically, they're rather stubborn creatures, so driving them away without killing them is usually considered more trouble than it's worth. For the sake of the challenge, though, I'll consider one driven away to be worth two killed, do ya ken? Whoever manages to drive off or hunt more of the critters is the winner. If ye win, ye can have whatever of our products you like for today. If I win, then I'll be putting you to work for the day in exchange for your food. Do ye have any questions for me 'fore we get started?" |

It was quite interesting – this situation that he found himself in at the moment – probably because he had never thought he’d meet another hunter who was a woman for starters. Her aura was authoritative and her words were final. He had goosebumps, so to speak, but only because he could actually feel and anticipate the thrill of this challenge before him. Thus, with a convincing speech by the latter, he couldn’t say no at all. “I’ll take you up on the offer.” And he sneaked a glance to the girl from earlier with a smirk on his face, something that almost said, ‘I like this!’ He followed as they would leave the shop, passing through the streets before finally coming to a place where the beasties were supposedly at. It was, a bit shocking to find the beasts splayed in a rather lazy fashion, but he figured those were their characteristic traits. Nanashi listened to the woman’s instructions and made sure to note that killing was not exactly going to help him with this case unless he ends up killing ever last one of them. So he’ll have to figure out a different approach, it would seem. “No. It was clear enough,” he said as he quickly brandished two kukris, Nightwalker and Ajani, stepping out from their hiding place to make his presence known to the creatures. Without further ado, he rushed towards the middle of the den, making a rather wild entrance, catching their gazes. And when one of the sleeping ones had opened their eyes to a wild shriek at the sudden appearance of a stranger, Nanashi let out his curse magic aura to create a panic over them. Now, those with rather low constitution may be forced to flee, but those with more primal instincts may be eager to butt heads with him. |

Oh dear. Arianna had been prepared for a quiet day of snacks and dealing with customers who wanted snacks, but it really was looking more and more like Esmeralda was getting too caught up in the moment again - and dragging her along with it. While it was probably not long from now that she would have been able to take a break, she suspected once again that her boss had chosen a particularly annoying opponent to fight, and her thoughts were proven correct a few moments later. The heavy metal unicorn with an afro was the first to react to Nanashi's sudden rush, and approached him at a canter that was easily a match for his speed, raising it's horn to clash with the hunter's knives. Despite it's appearance, it was very nearly as strong as Nanashi was, though in a contest of brute strength he would still be able to narrowly pull ahead. It's silvery horn shimmered for a moment and was soon accompanied by a low, keening noise that filled the air and made it difficult to concentrate on the use of magic - though it was certainly possible if one paused to break through, as the jamming effect was not truly nullification but rather an impediment on the 'sense' of magic. Of the sleeping metacorns, the one closest to Nanashi scrambled to it's feet and briefly fled to the edge of the stage. Unfortunately, it seemed that the retreat was not a full one, but merely regrouping, and as it leapt onto the stage, a variety of lacryma-fireworks were set off in the surrounding areas... and, oddly enough, they seemed to curl in the air and aim themselves towards Nanashi and the two girls on the hill. Of the other two metacorns, the one closest to Esmeralda charged the hill where she waited, a ginormous spear one-and-a-half times her height set planted in the dirt. With a flash of red light, the fireworks targeting her and the small girl in her charge become a beautiful display of sparkles and booming noise in the sky - as opposed to the pair of them becoming charcoal, of course. Laughing merrily, Esmeralda hefted and spun the spear and charged in to meet the Metacorn, the speartip and metacorn's horn clashing in a spray of silver and violet sparks as they began to exchange blows. The last metacorn... was, for the moment, mysteriously nowhere to be seen. |

He was annoyed as he clashed with the strange creature with a horn. The thing managed to parry the initial strike of his blades, which made him growl. So Nanashi had to quickly dispose this one as oppose to just capturing or chasing it away. At that, he pivoted on his heels and turned to make a kick for the metacorn’s gut, sending it flying for a bit as he dealt with the straight contact. Then, he would throw a small looking dagger at the metacorn’s direction. Seemingly aware of it, the metacorn, while airborne, tried to swat the dagger foolishly away, only to be surprised when suddenly, Nanashi came rushing up ahead to it with a red-blade. The heat on Ajani’s blade was evident in the air about it as he came slicing at the metacorn’s horn. With his power, the slice came down with a quick motion, and Ajani’s superheated blade would deal effectively to cut through the piece of horn so smooth. The momentum also seemingly pummelled the metacorn to the ground as Nanashi would land back next to it before glaring at it as he readied Nightwalker for a killing blow. But it was much to his surprise when the said metacorn had abruptly come to a stand from being pummelled to the ground. It then looked shocked as it stared at Nanashi before its forelegs would reach upwards to try and hold its head. When it would realise that its horn had been cut, it suddenly began to shriek in a sort of cry and started to run away from Nanashi. This left the feral man utterly confused before he looked down on the ground and saw the piece of horn he had cut. Somehow, he felt a little sad for the poor creature who can now be seen darting away from the area. Well, he supposed that would at least count for the points on chasing them away. He knelt and grabbed hold of the horn before looking back at the others. Perhaps he could just keep at it and cut the other horns as well. |

In the span of a brief few moments, many things happened, and Arianna could only catch brief glimpses of each. Nanashi clashed with one of the Metacorns, striking it and cleaving it's horn, sending the poor creature fleeing in shame. Well, that was one way of dealing with monsters, she supposed. Though Ari could not catch the intimate details of the attack that had caused it, she had seen the shimmering waves of magical heat and the twirl of ivory that followed it as the Heavy Metal Unicorn became... a heavy metal horse. Or was it a zebra now? It was difficult to tell. Simultaneously, the Metacorn that had engaged Esmeralda was sent tumbling all of the way down the hill and into the stage, where further fireworks were unintentionally set off. Uncontrolled as they were, these struck at the Metacorns and their hunters indiscriminately, and Nanashi, who had been thus far ignoring the initial barrage, would now be at a point where evading them would be well and truly impossible, as waves of multicoloured fire exploded around him. Severe burns were likely - if the hunter had not been as tough as he was, he very well might have died from the multiple intense flames. How fireworks could be so potent... was one of the Metacorn's many secrets. In the brief time that it took for Esmeralda to walk to the bottom of the hill, the Metacorns were fleeing in the chaos. While it wasn't... quite as exciting a hunt as the woman had hoped, at the very least they had accomplished their objective. Turning their attention to the knife-wielding hunter, Esmeralda dismissed her spear and inspected Nana's condition. "Should get some ointment on that, or it'll turn bad. Still, it looks like the job's done for now. We should head back and... well, I suppose I can treat you to something. You look like you could use it after today." |

It was truly a sight to behold. Nanashi didn’t expect for fireworks to suddenly rain upon them. Well, rain upon him. Almost instantly, instincts kicked in as there was no other way around this predicament, with the wave of colourful fireworks about to smother him with their sparks and flame. So he willed his magic upon his garment and the instantly, the kimono lit aflame and stretched out into a spiralling form to cover him. The mini explosion would last for a few minutes, with each whistling of the fireworks zipping by. He did not come out unscathed though as in the end, he would find a bad burn on his arm. In any case, with those meddling metacorns running across the field and hopefully never coming back there, it would seem as though the little hunting game would be done for now. He flinched at the sting on his arm as his kimono would retract from its spiralling pattern of protection and the flames on its surface dying out as well. It quickly reddened without much warning, his arm, and so when the chocolateure boss suggested he gets ointment for it, he merely looked at them with confusion. “What’s that?” he would ask as he would follow them across the field. Even if he would have to work his way to pay for his sweet delicious snacks now, he was still clueless to a lot of things and ointments sounded rather odd to him. “Is it edible?” |

"Owwie... that musta hurt." It didn't take a genius to understand that even through... what seemed to be some sort of protective cloth, the barrage of fireworks that had caught Nanashi off guard was painful, to say the least. Arianna winced as she watched, but... there really wasn't anything she could do. For that matter, she still wasn't entirely sure why she was here in the first place - why had she been dragged along on this... whatever it was in the firts place? "Ointment is stuff you put on burns to make them not hurt as much, and you'll heal better, you know," Arianna explained patiently - Esmeralda was too busy laughing at Nanashi's response, having taken his query as to whether ointment was edible as some form of joke. Either way, they began to head back into the city, and from there to the Bishoujo-Ai, where more work - and, more importantly, more snacks - awaited. Arianna, in particular, was pondering on the virtues of one of their shop's daily specials, a blueberry cheesecake that she had been eyeing for most of the morning. Of course, what the others would do was ultimately of no concern. Or, rather, she simply didn't have the mental capacity to think of it at the moment, as she wiped a sliver of drool away at the thought of delicious cake. mmm. cake. |

Getting a bit of information about the said ointment that should be applied to the burns he got and hopefully make his burn feel better, Nanashi nodded in agreement as he would then follow the two back. He did, however, make sure to pat the head of the girl Ari, and say, “Don’t worry, it’s not that painful.” Though perhaps he should have said it was and had gotten some leeway for the moment they returned to the shop, when he was given an ointment for the burns, the cunning store owner began to work him. Though it was a strange kind of job, sometimes cleaning the place, sometimes washing the plates, sometimes minding the kitchen like an assistant. But overall, it didn’t seem as bad as one would think. The only problem had always been that he didn’t feel comfortable being inside a confined space, and a shop, even if it was big, was still a confining space. But perhaps the most unnerving was when he would help out with the serving. Because he wasn’t so confident about his manner of speaking that most of the time when he was asked which are the recommended sweets, he would just describe them all as equally good. By the end of a week, Nanashi had at least enjoyed a few more sweet treats and learned to speak a little better, though, he may have broken a couple of plates in the process. And it doesn’t come as a surprise that he would always have to ask help from Ari especially when he couldn’t understand if something was edible or not. |

Arianna regarded Nanashi suspiciously when he insisted that his burns weren't that painful, but a slight look from Esmeralda warned her off from pursuing the point. Why the old hag was so interested in him was something that Ari wasn't particularly sure of, but it was probably best not to get in between the two. Well, it wasn't like he was an entirely boring person, anyway. "If you're suuuure..." she conceded, leading him inside to where she could dig out an old first aid kit to apply some ointment to Nanashi's burn. To her mild surprise, he didn't even complain about it when she applied it, though the complaints would probably come soon enough. Work at the bishoujo-ai continued as usual, albeit with their new hire, and Arianna received a special bonus that weekend (an extra-special plus sized banana sundae) for having... uh... scouted him. Despite his apparent discomfort, the regulars quite enjoyed Nanashi's presence, though like all good things it would eventually have to come to an end. After all, they only really needed temporary help, and Nanashi's true calling had always been to be a hunter... or something like that? Arianna wasn't really sure. Anyway! Broken plates aside, the poor hunter-boy would be supplied with a healthy-sized kit of snacks to go and sent on his way when the work was done. Whether he would ever be seen again... well, who knew? Maybe he'd visit, or maybe his unusual experiences would scare the poor boy off of specialty cafes in the future. Well, it wasn't like he had any way of knowing that most of them were nothing like the bishoujo-ai in the first place, did he? |
