FTG's Most Gentlemanly Snake of 2016

Jace was not new to the city of Magnolia in any sense of the word. Though his face was quickly forgotten amidst the endless crowds, he retained a little presence on the streets. The tall man hummed quietly to himself as he wandered around for something to do, half-bored out of his mind, half-waiting for the bars to open. He did close to nothing but walk around while he waited for evening to fall. He had arrived in Magnolia after a small bit of business near and around Belladonna: some old woman managed to get all twenty of her cats up a tree and who's around to help? The gyspy with a staff. He didn't mind, of course, but the scratches he had attained were itchier than many powders he found himself using. As night fell, Jace found refuge from a sudden thunderstorm that kicked up outside in a warm little tavern. It was quiet and the patrons private. While Jace did prefer an active, hearty bar, he was fine with this. The loud thunder outside was quite the headache. The tall gypsy removed his cloak and put it amongst the other patron's, sitting at the counter of the bar, where he would soon be joined by a disheartened young lady in need of gypsy magic. He ordered a stiff drink and passed the jewel, quietly sipping at his drink as he began to feel rather bored, not hearing a soaked through woman wander into the bar and sit beside him. |

Arianna did not know what exactly drew her back to Magnolia, a place where she had mixed emotions swirling around inside of her. She had comw earlier in the week as an assignment from the guild to pick something up and had since returned to Magnolia, her chest aching with the ghost of an emotion she had almost grown numb to. Above her head, storm clouds were brewing and she had a feeling she would not be leaving Magnolia tonight. "Hey, Tempa, theres a storm brewing above. Don't wait up for me okay?" she told her house mate through the communication lacryma. She got a quick okay before she continued wandering around. It didn't take long for the rain to start falling. Soaking the young half demon in moments as she hurried towards the nearest shelter, the thunder overhead hurting her sensitive ears and she ducked inside, realizing at once that she was in a bar just by the smell of liquor that greeted her nose. Shivering, she made her way over to the counter and plopped down beside a tall man who looked like he traveled a lot and ordered a vodka and orange juice, paying the jewels to the bartender as he handed her the drink. Carefully, she tried to dry out her tail and ears, flicking as much water off them as she could, she didn't pay attention to where the water landed. "It's really coming down out there isn't it?" she said. |

Jace shifted a little as a small woman with curious features sat beside him and ordered a drink. She was soaking and rightly tried drying the adorable pair of animal ears on her head and long feline tail. He didn't flinch as he was flicked with rainwater, not minding truly. He took a long glug of his strong drink and sighed in relief when he put it back down. He didn't even need to look behind him to feel the dark, sharp stares the girl was getting from some of the less open-minded patrons. Discrimination was something Jace knew all too well so he was adamant to make sure nothing happened while he was around. Then, the girl asked him something, small talk by the way she said it. Almost like she didn't really care how he responded. Nonetheless, he smiled and turned his head slightly in the manner appropriate for their proximity before speaking in return. "Indeed it is~" His voice, as per usual, was smooth and silky in his exotic accent. "It'll get much worse before it gets any better, I'm afraid." He shrugged a little. The bartender, who didn't much mind that the young lady was obviously not human (not fully human anyways), told them that they were up all night and both the gypsy and the girl were free to stay as long as the storm continued. Jace laughed a little and nodded his thanks before turning back to the shivering girl. He gave a small hum. "Stay here a moment." He stood and retrieved his now-dry cloak, patting it down as he walked back, carefully measuring the gazes and stares the patrons gave him and the girl, looking for anything that can be threatening. They were all middle-aged men of various builds, but not one looked all too dangerous. Though there were a group of rowdy punks that stuck to a table and talked amongst themselves. Dismissing his paranoia, Jace gently draped his long, heavy cloak around her shoulders. It was made specifically to keep a person warm and comfortable and he hoped it helped the small girl in the same way. He sat back down with a sigh and a smile that never faded. "There you go~ Now you won't catch your death." He yawned and chuckled a little, turning to her with his drink in hand. "Now, why does such a beautiful young lady have such a stormy face? If I didn't know that was the face of a broken-hearted one, I'd say you've stolen the storm from one of the clouds above us." His manner of speaking was obviously not truly Fiorian, but he was articulate and soft in his way with words. He was physically imposing and possible dangerous, but the aura he gave and his smile was disarming. He was nothing but a big teddy bear, a doctor for those that have fallen on hard times. |

Ari looked over at the man beside her as he talked back to her, saying that it was going to get worse before it got better. She chuckled, knowing things probably couldn't get much worse for her but what did she know. She could feel the suspicious stares that were cast her way but she ignored them, too worried about the state of her body; cold and wet. The man beside her surprised her a moment later by draping his coat over her and she turned to him. "It's not often people show me any kindness. Thank you." she said as she took a sip of her drink. He seemed to be a perceptive one, the tall man she had seated herself next to as he commented about her eyes being that of someone who's had their heart broken. If only you knew she thought. He didn't have the intimidating Aura she would have thought someone of his size would have, instead he put her at ease as she took another drink, feeling a slight buzz as the alcohol began taking affect. It made her insides warm. "I guess you could say I've been heart broken but it's healing." it was partially a lie as it still felt like a stab to the chest whenever someone mentioned Rhevas but it was getting easier. "I'm Arianna by the way. Who are you?" she asked, feeling it rude not to introduce herself to this kind stranger. |

Before he spoke, Jace took note of her little comment, that people rarely show the small girl kindness. It made him feel slightly guilty and disgusted to be human for those few seconds before he sipped at his large, heavy drink and drown those silly notions. He listened, his head turned to her as she gave a meek explanation of her 'situation'. He gave a smile and nodded quietly. So he was right. Something terrible had happened, though not in the sense any other might see it. The dull glow of her skin, the contours of her face, the dim light that was gently fading in her eyes. These were the signs of a heartbroken woman. The tall man hated when some foolish boy or girl decides that their partner just isn't good enough and left them in the dirt. And while he wasn't one to delve into someone's personal life, he knew far too many stories of the times he'd had to play be a doctor and pick up the pieces of shattered hearts and piece them back together. He'd done it plenty of times, but never before was his patient a non-human. Inwardly, he was a little concerned and enthused. He didn't know entirely how he should act, if anything would set her off violently or emotionally. Of course, he could handle the latter, but the issue with people these days is that appearances are beyond deceiving. Goodness knows if he could survive, let alone stop this young lady if she lashed out at him. Though he didn't want to suspect her, it was a measure of safety on his part and hers. He never showed these thought processes to the girl, registering her name and question with a polite smile. "My name is Jace Mhaol. I'm a traveller. And may I say, in my widest journeys, I've never come across such a beautiful name, nor a beauty like your own." He bowed his head and back slightly in a show of respect and kindness. It was common courtesy amongst his people to offer a compliment to a stranger when you introduce yourself, though many people in Fiore could mistake it for flirting. Jace jiggled a little and moved his bar stool a little further away so that he could spin around and face the girl without making her uncomfortable. He was pondering the point she made earlier and made him smile wide and speak sagely when he thought of a response. "My dear Arianna. When you said your wound was healing, I must object." He put his drink down and leaned a little forward, looking her in the eyes with a "I know your pain, you don't have to hide it" gaze. "For surely every wound begins to heal the moment it is made... Saying that your broken heart is healing means very little, for I know that it must still ache if not burn in agony." He got bold. What he was saying was deeply personal to both him and most likely the demon girl, so he decided that he needed to act in a way that would establish that connection and open her up to him. So. He took her right hand in his left and covered it with his right. His hands were large, rough mittens of a traveller who'd had to live rough for many years. But they were warm and inoffensive. Just by the softness in which he held her hand, there was no sign of hostility or of desire for the girl. He was just a man who wanted to help her. His smile warmed a little more and he took on a fatherly expression. "And while the heart breaks, it swells your bosom with emotion and pinches at your throat and eyes. And I see that you try your utmost to hold back what must be. Maybe you see it as weakness. It is not. So please, my dear, you should not restrict your heart from releasing it's despair. Let it all out... I'm here for you." From there, he didn't know what would happen. If the girl rejected him he would just nod and smile, letting go of her and swigging his drink before listening to her. But if she did do as he had expected and let every pent up emotion out, be it aggressive or depressed or just a flood of tears and childlike wailing, he would stand from his stool, wrap his arms around her from in front of her and hold her to his chest, comforting her like a father would, stroking her hair and head but never touching the ears. Rubbing her back but never reaching too far down. He really was just a man that wanted to help. |

He introduced himself as Jace, a wanderer who had traveled a lot in his life and Ari smiled but the smile did not reach her eyes as she could tell that this was a man that she could trust. She didn't know how she knew this but she did, something about him made her feel at ease. She looked away, taking another sip of her drink before he spoke again, saying how he had to object to her saying her wounds were healing and her eyes widened. No one had ever asked her how she was doing, not since she could remember. She had always needed to be strong, to not show just how utterly broken she was inside, had to always show she was strong and never allowing herself time to begin healing. She gazed up at him, fighting back her emotions that wanted to break through the control she'd put in her mind, smashing against the barrier as it began to Crack, letting her know that if she didn't do something soon she would be an emotional wreck. She took a deep breath as she looked at him, doing what she could to put the blocks back in place before his next words brought the dam crashing down, allowing all the emotions free. First was anger, the anger she'd felt at Rhevas' betrayal though it wasn't very strong as she'd dealt with much of it over the past few months but following the anger came sadness, an emotion that Ari was unfamiliar with and didn't quite know how to deal with. "I'm not supposed to let the emotions out like this. My entire life I've been taught to hide anger and sadness and I've locked them away inside a box in my mind. I can't afford to let someone see me like this; weak and pathetic. People already prey on me as it is, what would happen if I broke down now, I'd be fresh meat" her voice dropped to a whisper as she felt something form in her eyes, tears that wanted to leak down her face but she would not let them. "It is true that I have pain in my heart but it is mine and mine alone." she said, her control in place for now. |

Jace was uncharacteristically proud of his little speech to the young lady. It was obvious his words had some effect on her as her voice subtly changed. She may not have realised but her quiet tone of speaking had become slightly shaky, the tattle-tale sign of emotion being summoned from hiding. The tall man looked upon the girl with eyes of a god, of a father with nothing but love and care and warmth in his heart. Her body followed the suit of her voice, her hand trembling in his own in a way she could never notice. Jace listened closely to her almost refute his point and say that if she were to show any hint of emotion, she would be deemed weak and preyed upon by the humans around her. The tall gypsy scoffed softly and beamed. He puffed out his chest and spoke grandly in his soft tone. ”Young lady, let them come. I’ll be damned to the coldest pits if I let any harm come to you just because you felt the need to feel more human than you’re treated.” He sighed and smiled, putting his hand on the girl’s shoulder. ”My point is that you should not feel weakness for showing emotion. To open your heart unto the world is to show that you have the exact strength you doubt you have.” He took another sip of his drink and mused over a story he once heard of from Devola. He might tell the demon girl one day but he knew now wasn’t the time for tall tales. He turned back to the girl. ”Just know that, no matter what happens. There will be people that love you beyond all measure. People that will care for you and do whatever they can to keep a smile on your face. Not that one you gave me before, not a polite smile, but the one you give when you laugh and when your heart lightens. People like me, we live to see that smile on whomever we meet. Us travellers… We’ve seen plenty in our times. We’ve seen the lowest of the low and we never want to see anything like it. So we strive to make lives that little brighter. But you? A young lady like you must have plenty like that with her, even if you’re not entirely human or if you don’t really realise it.” He beamed like a father unto the daughter that was grieving the loss of her mother. Like a father who had lost his wife but knew he had one more to care for. To live for. He gently pulled Arianna from her chair and, with her at eye level to him like this, said in his softest, warmest, most kindly voice. ”And if you don’t have anyone like that, there’s ol'Jace." He chuckled lightly and scratched the back of his head, understanding how odd that might sound. "I mean, I’ll care for you and protect you and remind you that you are safe and never alone in this cold and dark world. Just for one night, I will your company keep.” His accent and slightly mistake in language only made him seem more ancient, more all-knowing and all the less threatening. He truly was just a man who wanted to see this girl safe and happy, even if he must be the one to keep her so and even if it is for this one stormy night. With that, anticipating a landslide of emotion, he embraced the small, trembling demon girl in his fatherly arms, like he would a sobbing child; stroking her hair and back and letting her finally crack, never telling her to hush even if she wailed and screamed, though he reminded her to breath if she failed to do so.
