"Why did you call me home, father?" Darion sat in a large armchair turned against the oversized window, slowly smoking on a cigar as he looked out at the storm that was raging outside the mansion's safe walls. Blue thunder could be seen now and then, and the sound of thunder was very quick to follow, as the rain was pouring down. It was as if the gods themselves were crying, which was not impossible considering what Darion and his father had in mind. Darion's father, Wilhelm, was a large standing man with blonde backslicked hair and dark clothing. The same cold face and crimson eyes, no one could doubt for a second that the two Steinheils were father and son. Wilhelm had a raspier voice than that of his son, as well as a lower pitch, and most would find it rather unsettling to hear him speak. He was standing at the back of a beautifully carved desk made out of ebony wood, and like Darion he was looking out of the window. Cracking his neck (now we know where Darion has gotten that habit from), Wilhelm spoke without a hint of hesitation or compassion in his voice; "The research lab in the South have recently took contact with us, requesting our aid. It seems that they have run out of animals to experiment on, and so have asked us to provide new ones for them." Darion looked at his father without turning his head fully, and with a faked "You don't say" look on his face he discarded some of the ash from the cigar and said in a bored response; "Father, how is this our problem? The Southern Chemical Research Station has always been given free hands in most matters, in exchange for not directly dealing with us just for the reason if the authorities would find it. They have been given adequate resources to.."gather" new specimens for the work that we have given them. What can be so important that they decided to risk being found out?" Wilhelm looked down at the desk and took up an envelope with the family seal on it, and a large text saying "STRENG GEHEIM: FÜR DER OBERBEFEHLSHABER ALLEIN". He handed it to Darion who got strangely large eyes, for a man who rarerly gets suprised. Why? Because the seal itself was only used on documents of extreme importance, but with a text that said "Top Secret: For the Supreme Commander alone" in the language only spoken by the Family members & their inner circle? Something had happened, and nothing good. The more Darion read of the letter that was found inside the envelope, the more enraged he became. Apparently one of the lower-ranked scientists at the research station had done a mistake on the last trip to find specimens, and instead of bringing the useless rabble the guy had kidnapped someone of importance. Darion shook his head, he had nothing against letting the labratory experiment on non-mages, but due to the sensitivity of the lab and the research there only non-mages who would not be overly missed were taken. The girl who was taken, and later escaped thanks to a search-and-rescue party sent out by the local authorities (oh Darion was shaking when he read that), had told them everything about the kidnappers. Short and sweet, now even the local Knights had been engaged in a search for a group of highly trained kidnappers. This meany no more speciment hunts, ergo no more experiments. Darion dumped the cigar in the nearby ashtray and rose up, taking his cane as he started to walk to the door. "I will take care of it, father. I will go to the slave auction in Dandelion and personally escort them to the lab. Would you kindly have the failed scientist rendevouz with me when I arrive so I can take care of him?" Wilhelm nodded and waved with his hand, showing to Darion "get out". Darion bowed lightly and walked in a fast pace towards the main entrance. Taking his coat and top hat he was escorted to the black carriage by four of the Steinheil Security, who would also accompany him to the auction. You never knew with those gangsters, better be careful. Darion sighed as the carriage started to move for it was at least 2 hours until they arrived, and so he would sleep until they arrived. Feeling a light shaking movement, Darion woke up by one of the bodyguards who said in a disciplined and very much professional voice; "My lord, we have arrived in Dandelion. The auction starts at-" That sentenced was never finished as Darion had taken a grip around the guard's throat, and said in a calm voice that no mentioning of the auction should be done public. One never knew who was listening, and no outsiders could know why they were there. With a nodding, the guard (with his throat now released from the grip of death) stood outside the carriage, looking all around for any potential threats just like the other 3 guards. Darion took a step out of the carriage, looked around, and sighed in discontent. What a filthy place he thought. |
