![]() "Trick or treat!" Everything was getting hectic here in Poinsetta, at least for the monsters that were wandering the streets, as the sun was slowly fading in the distance. Everything from vampires to werewolves, angels to demons, zombies to ghouls, and much, much more. Though, much to Theodore's relief, this did not upset or bother Emiko in the slightest, but only because she had turned into a monster herself. In fact, she was both excited and thrilled to know about what tonight really entailed, having recently discovered the concept of trick or treating. All the monsters around her, including herself, were all just a bunch of kids and some adults that were looking to get some spooky goodies all on a single night. Everyone seemed to have their own parties already forming as they discussed their plans of route or what type of jokes they would be pulling on the other participants, but while Emiko didn't have anyone else to trick or treat with directly, she'd always have her dear little friend Teddy. Standing outside one of the candy shops somewhat near the Blue Pegasus guild headquarters, people were zipping in and out faster than she could count as they were preparing at the last minute for the crowds they were expecting tonight. Business was good for them, but Emiko was going to have to be patient, "It all looks really... really good..." Her forehead was pressed against the glass that displayed all the specialty candies the shop sold, none of which she would ever be capable of affording, but perhaps she would get lucky sometime tonight. Theodore was sitting on her shoulder, watching just how many children had snuck inside and stolen a few pieces of candy here and there, "Oh, look! He's dressed as a bear too!" It was absolutely pathetic and pitiful, out of all things to steal, you'd take the risk on candy? Of course, Theodore would likely be considered a hypocrite by those willing to make a comment as he'd likely be returning to the shop during their next stay in Poinsetta to get the ones that Emiko really wanted, but he wasn't doing it of his own selfish lust for food at least. In the meantime, the little girl would be salivating with a little of the drool sliding down lips, "Ooooh, I just wish it was time already!" |

Varriden walked through the streets of Poinsettia, noting the trait that drew most people to the city - the blend of city and nature. The trees here were more abundant than the actual buildings - that wasn't uncommon, but here it seemed less like a city with trees, and more like a forest with buildings in it, almost. It was hard to tell where the line between nature and civilization was, such was the blurring from how the city was designed. For the events going on during the year, however, the landscape had been slightly altered, no doubt with magical assistance. Pumpkins were visible in every other patch of grass or garden, carved into jack-o-lanterns, spooky lights hung from the edges of roofs and strung between street lights. Convincing-looking cobwebs were clinging to the corners of fences and overhangs, looking as real as if they had been spun by a real spider, though Varriden doubted any spider would spin a web with silk that thick, webs tended to be rather thin, in terms of individual strand. The people were dressed for the occasion as well - everyone was in various costumes, both magical and non - from people who just had facepaint smeared on, to people who had actually used magic to alter their own form - maybe a few of them are just appropriately-themed Takeover mages, Varriden thought. Even a little girl peering through a window of a candy store was wearing a little bear outfit, with a smaller bear on her shoulder that seemed to be moving of its own accord. Magically enchanted? Varriden wondered. Must be fairly friendly, otherwise it wouldn't have been left in the care of a small child. |

A True Curiosity Jace was a lover of the simple things in life; cool winters, calm summers. But there were some days that the old man could barely withhold his excitement, this was one of them. Everywhere he looked, in the twilight draped city of Poinsettia, he saw brilliant pains and lights and fabrics melded into costumes of the arcane. There were princesses from glorious tales and the knight that saves them, there were furry creatures both clean and draped in fake blood. Jace regretted not putting anything special into the way he looked, but he was generally intimidating enough without skull face-pain and a giant scythe. Oh well. As he walked the streets and enjoyed the beloved traditions, some people avoiding him and some begging him for the candy he pre-emptively stuffed in his large pockets, he noticed that not everyone enjoyed the light of the evening. Many benign people were just not specially dressed nor did they seem all too invested in the festivities, but there were some who shooed children away with a stern expression. He always hated party poopers. The tall man strolled, taking note of most if not every costume, draped in his dark brown travel cloak with his trusty staff keeping his limp in check (long story short, don't take those weird adhesive mats out of the shower before going in and having to wash hair as long as his). He noticed that many people were dressed, less of true horrors and grotesques, but of fairy tales. Even those that were obviously mages fabricating their form, they were never truly scary, that was not the spirit of the night. That was the true curiosity. His walk had taken him an hour along the streets until something caught his eye. A bear. Sitting on the shoulder of a bear-suited child. Absolutely astounding. He couldn't help but step a little closer, keeping the shadows as a blanket as usual. He examined the creature. He had seen no summon-beast nor beast proper that looked anything like the small, brown-furred teddy bear. Wait. Teddy bear? Yes, as he got closer, he realised that there were seams in the fur and it had no true hands or feet. He was slightly disappointed but couldn't help but feel some form of intrigue when he looked at it. His mother always told him he was like a 'tija de scufundări pentru lucruri ciudate" or "diving rod for strange things". Slowly putting back the bestiary he'd accrued, he stepped up to the window. It was a candy shop, a very famous one around these parts. He could remember sampling their great fudges with a lovely elderly woman while she waited for her son to return. The tall man, his hood down and stubble exposed, chuckled to himself. He looked down to the small girl, knowing the majority of things in there were far from cheap to her. When he noticed that other children were stealing and that she didn't stoop so low (big talk for a past thief), he crouched down to her level. He winced as his leg clicked a little but he smiled. "You look hungry." His voice was deep and accented, but light and friendly. He was a fatherly man at heart and couldn't stand to children unhappy. "The things in there are normally a bit rich for my blood but-" He pawed around for his wallet of jewel, spinning around to find a group of children sprinting away with it. The large man blinked and sighed, unable to give up the energy to chase them down. "Well, I guess they really are too rich for my blood now." he sat with his back to the wall of the candy store, chuckling lightly. He pulled out his favourite toffee from his pocket of convenient candies and offered another to the young girl as he eat. Jace looked over to a curious looking young man in curious looking clothes with a curious look on his face. He waved to the young man in a sage-like/lazy old man-ish way. An hour into the evening and he was already 'every jewel down'. Yep. This was going to be a night to remember. |

After having her face pressed against the glass for so long and so intensely, if she removed it, she'd find that the whole of her forehead was red from the pressure. There were all kinds of treats, some that she would never even know the name of if it wasn't for the labels and pricing giving her the answers. She could spy her favorite, being so very careful skipped over by the vast majority of the crowd, in favor of the similarly delicious salt water taffy, soft caramel chews, chocolate malt balls, and cinnamon twists. There wasn't a lot in this world that Emiko had or cared about, just Teddy and the few friends that she had made during her short stay here in Fiore, but there was just one spoil that she claimed as her own weakness. She could feel her lips moving as she began to whisper the name of the treat that she hadn't had since she left Seven nearly a month ago, but was interrupted before she could do so. She swiveled her head to a large man that had knelt down beside her, seeming very rough for his age yet smiling as though he didn't notice, "Yeah, I want some so bad." She turned her head back towards the glass, wishing that the time for this unusual custom referred to as trick or treating would have arrived. She had absolutely no idea how to participate in the activity beyond dressing up, but she'd do anything for some delectable sweets. She wouldn't have noticed the man's kind generosity if it wasn't for Theodore's vigilant watch as he tapped her ear, retreating her attention to the man on that side of her who had begun to pull out something special after having his wallet stolen, unbeknownst to Emiko. She'd stare at him, eyes wide as he offered the girl a piece of toffee, while she nodded her head in deep gratitude and acceptance of the divine gift, "Th... Thank you." She unwrapped the sweet treat, some drool starting to roll over as her mind focused purely on the thought of savoring it in three... two... one... She shuddered in delight as the flavors overwhelmed her taste buds, eyes closed as she was sent back to the memory of the last time she had one similar in Stella, "Thank you, sir... Thank you so very much." It was very likely an incredibly small gesture on behalf of the man, but it was like opening a gift on Christmas day to Emiko. |

Varriden debated if he should approach the girl and ask if her parents were around - while he couldn't see her face except for what little reflection was visible in the glass (which wasn't much, with her face pressed against it) from her height, she couldn't have been very old, though there was still the issue of the bear - odd to leave a thing like that with a child unless it was very benign in nature - or perhaps she's actually an older woman whose's just vertically challenged? he thought. But that wouldn't explain the bear suit and the child-like interest in the candy shop. Before he could approach, however, someone beat him to it - a man with dark hair who knelt and offered the girl some candy from a pocket in his jacket. The girl seemed very thankful for the confection, and Varriden waved faintly when the man turned and waived back to him. He was interrupted in his mental train of thought by a tap on his shoulder, only to find a girl calling him a creep for staring at the girl. "And grown men giving candy to little girls is considered an even bigger social stigma, and yet I didn't see you shooting him any glances - or would that have been labeled as 'creepy' too?" Varriden said flatly, turning to face the new girl. "I was concerned for her safety, considering she seemed to be a child wandering alone with appeared to be a living magical construct perched on her shoulder, even if it was a stuffed one - forgive me for not ignoring a child who could be lost and potentially in danger." Varriden said with some sarcasm. "I can appreciate your concern, miss, but I only ask that you take a moment to observer the situation's context before jumping to conclusions." he said, ending with a slight sigh. |

Jace held up a small toffee, wrapped in simple, purple foil for the girl beside him. It was a cheap-ish confection, but it was nonetheless a gift for the child that she took as if it saved her life. The old gypsy gave a small, hearty laugh and a dismissive wave of his hand. "Don't you worry about it, kiddo. My treat." Placing his staff beside him, the cross-legged man unravelled the wrapping from the sweet and eat it, jaded to the taste he nonetheless enjoyed. As his mouth saturated the small toffee, Jace's attention was brought to the man from before and a young woman that approached him. He didn't quite hear the conversation but could tell it was close to becoming quite heated; so he raised his large hand and spoke loud enough for them both to hear. "Friends! Friends! Peace! There's no need to get upset on a night like this! The holiday begs for kindness and fun~" The man chimed in his naturally lazy man way. He smiled and tossed them both a couple of the same types of toffee for them to ignore or catch. He pulled out two more and passed one more to the young girl beside him. "That's a very well-done costume." Jace said softly, with a warm smile. "I know a young lass that'd love to know where you got it. But, I digress. If you're hungry for sweet things, my dear, why don't you go trick or treating? Do you not have a bag or bucket of some kind?" he asked with genuine curiosity. He stayed sat down, looking slightly up at the girl as to not intimidate her with his height. His years with the caravans and countless children amongst the camps had taught him well in the way of interact with them in a comfortable, non-illegal way. |
