How on earth did this happen? Sure, it was no secret that the outskirt villages of Oshibana weren't exactly a place you'd want to raise a family but what was happening now was beyond ridiculous. At least, that was what Lee came to believe on this night. The constant moaning was beginning to get to him as well, the number of times he would rub his fingers through his forehead was increasing in number. How many hours had they been trapped in this tavern? Yes, actually trapped. With a small sigh he opened his eyes, dark gray irises scanning through the sizeable room yet again as if confirming, for the hundredth time, that everything inside was okay. The same sounds as before, the same people as before, nothing was different. The mercenary turned his head to the left, to the entrance way of the building, looking at the hastily built barricade made from tables and chairs. How long was it going to hold? The moaning just wasn't stopping anytime soon, was it? It wasn't just their soulless howls that were getting to him, but also the ever constant sound of fingernails scrapping across the walls. Sounded like a horde of rats skittering behind the surface, and by hordes he meant hundreds. Moaning and scratching weren't the only sounds though, the occasional whisper between the other survivors as well as the nonstop crying from Sabrina. Poor girl. First day on the job as a waitress, he gathered, and she was dealing with this. Lee sympathized with her, but then again he was currently feeling bad for everyone including himself. Closing his eyes yet again, he believed that he would be able to get some kind of sleep if he just...toned out the noise somehow. Leaning against the wall, with weapon no more than an inch from his hand, he began to wonder just how long this was going to last, or what he was going to do. Forty eight hours earlier, Lee was sitting at a table with a elderly man who reeked with booze. "It won't be a hard job this time, Lee, I promise." he spoke, raising a large piece of meat to his mouth and chomping down with a saliva filled mouth. Raising an eyebrow, followed by his glass, Lee responded with "You say that every time...and yet for some reason each job has been getting progressively worse and worse. I'm starting to think "easy" jobs are just your way of saying it's going to be horrible" That response got quite the bawl of laughter from the man, tossing himself backwards and spilling a decent portion of his alcohol out of the mug. Lee, however, wasn't as entertained. "Now now my friend trust me on this one. All I need you to do is a little...investigating." Well, that was certainly different. "As you know, Oshibana isn't exactly the example of good samaritans and strong neighborhood values. One of the outskirt towns has been the source of some...unwanted rumors. Dark Mages. From what I am hearing, a couple of them decided to make the town their own little home. I don't know what they want, or who they are, but I do know I want some eyes on the town. The Guilds and the Knights are gonna hear about this soon enough, but it'd be prefered if the Knights knew about it first." Cortez explained, taking another bite of his meal. "Then why not notify the Knights?" Lee asked. "Good question, easy answer. Knights aint looking into it because nothings official yet. They won't waste the man power on a rumor." Lee frowned. "So you're sending me." Cortez smiled, before Lee sighed and left the table. That was the explanation for Lee being here. He had been here for at least a day already, having been staying at one of the more low costing inns. His search for any Dark Mage activity had been proving to be unsuccessful, meaning that what Cortez had sent him out on had been nothing more than a false rumor. It was only when Lee was planning to call it quits was when things had begun to go down. He was not present for when it began, only to see what had happened. Something came over the town's people, consuming with madness and causing them to start attacking their own neighbors. Soon the roads became painted with splatters of blood, as the ever growing horde of crazies citizens grew with each injured person. Lee had done what he could to try and staunch the flow of chaos, but the adversaries he faced had shown that they were not bothered by injuries like a metal pike through the heart. Slow moving, mindless, immortal, and hungry. What a fun combination of traits. He had a few others had retreated into the tavern, barricading it as quickly as possible...and now here they were. Waiting. The waiting was the worst of it. Lee was drawing a blank, unsure of what to do or how to react. So...he waited. He lay there against the wall, trying to tone out the sounds from outside. Sabrinas crying continued, as well as the worried whispers of Charles. Xavier paced the walls, checking the poorly boarded windows. Thankfully they were covered with storm prevention panels, so they simply needed to reinforce those to keep the window secured. Then there was the other individual, the one that Lee hadn't learned the name of yet. "No way of knowing how long all of this is going to hold.." Xavier commented, looking at the other trapped survivors as if searching for acknowledgement. "Calm down. Aint no reason to start getting riled up. I'm sure they'll get bored eventually and move on.." Charles stated, content to clean glasses behind the bar. "Why don't you head upstairs and get some rest like the others? Can't be good for ya to be freaking out like you are." Xavier was quiet, before shaking his head and heading up the flight of stairs. Lee was quiet, watching with half open eyes, wanting to get his own wink of sleep but knowing that he needed to be where he would best be able to defend if the need arose. |
