It had started out as a late night walk to clear his head, but Trevor was wishing that he’d just have stayed in the room he’d found at a clean, simple inn. He had grown up in a place where, if you know what you were doing, taking a walk at night was only dangerous because you might fall into a hole and break a leg or get attacked by a wild animal. Here in Trillium, the danger came from your fellow human beings, but it wasn’t an instinctive lesson than the youth had learned or retained. He’d set out so that he could stop himself from thinking about what had happened to Julian and how he’d lost the only real friend he’d ever had. Also, stupidly, he’d left Talon hidden in his room and only had his traveling staff with him. At first he’d been mesmerized by the bright lights and crowds of the casino city and he hadn’t paid enough attention to his surroundings. He’d wandered onto the edges of a rough, down-at-heel area located off of the main streets of the city and clearly he stood out in this neighbourhood because he’d attracted the attention of an unpleasant group of men who’d been loitering in a doorway. Before he knew it, the five of them had cut him off and pushed him up against a wall. One of them, a burly man with heavy five o’ clock shadow and a face crisscrossed with scars took the lead. He swaggered closer and closer to Trevor as he said, “Well, well. What a fine young lord we ‘ave ‘ere. What’s a pretty little flower like you doin’ down here with us common folk? Stupid little lordlings like you oughtta know better than to come down ‘ere. We know what to do with ya here.” As he said this, he drew a nasty looking knife and advanced on the youth. Even without his sword, Trevor’s training kicked in and he moved into a defensive stance with his travelling staff ready for a fight. The man lunged in and the lanky youth smacked him hard across the wrist with the staff, causing him to drop the knife. A second blow from the butt of the staff doubled him over and a third strike to his temple left the man unconscious. However the other four men closed in on him and the fight started to turn against him as their nasty knives and cudgels all lunged for him. The staff became a blur as Trevor kept them at bay but he grunted in pain as one of the cudgels found home and made his shoulder go temporarily numb. If things didn’t change soon, it might be a serious problem for the young man. |

Having received instructions from the Knight's Academy, Nikolaus had ended up in potentially the worst of available locations available. This end of week task had required the squires to spread out amongst towns throughout Fiore and observe the rate of crime, which then would be submitted for the higher ranks to review. They were told rather specifically not to become involved in any situations whatsoever as to not skew the data and that the Knights would be more quietly active in Fiore during this time, just as a precaution of something critical occurring. Nikolaus was slightly disappointed with the requirements surrounding this outing, having wanted to get in on a little action himself. He had spent so much time in the Knight Academy studying, training, and socializing that he never really had been given the chance to be of any actual service. Sure, whenever the opportunity struck, he'd go out on a little venture as the Dark Knight to help out a few people, but it had become a rare event now. Considering he was now enlisted in the Knights, he was often expected to be at certain places and couldn't risk the chance of anyone connecting the dots. Strolling through Trillium, he carried his voice recording lacrima in hand. They were all given standard files and a clipboard to carry when scouting out information, but taking true to his father's craftsmanship, Nikolaus had recreated an earlier version of his father's recording lacrima. It allowed him to be more mobile, free of carrying around a bunch of clutter, and didn't distract his eyes from the world around him. Sure, he had to go back and write everything once he got back, but this was by far the most sensible method of doing so. Making his way throughout the town, he'd cut through most of the alleyways until one opened up to criminal mischief. He'd stay covered by the shadow of the alley as he whispered into the lacrima, "21:43, a group of six... no, five adult males engaging with a teenager. Husky male with facial scars is verbally harassing victim. Oh, shit." Pressing the button to end the recording, he slipped the lacrima back into his pocket and started to sprint over to the group. Between the time that he had saw the knife being drawn during the recording up to the point that he could reach the group, a brawl had already begun. The victim was able to knock the husky man out cold, much to Nikolaus's surprise, but he certainly was impressed. However, now that the group had been pissed off, they all drew their similar knives out and started to move towards the boy. Having the opportunity to catch at least one of them off guard, Nikolaus would kick one grunt in the back of the knee, sending him down to catch himself on the other. Once he had done so, Nikolaus grasped the man's head with both hands and slammed his own knee into the back of the poor guy's noggin, knocking him out cold before he had the opportunity to make a difference. Now, having alerted the others of his presence, he unsheathed the katana on his back and extended it towards the remaining three street rats, "It's pretty pathetic when you have to gang up on single kid to get your kicks, don't you think? You've got one chance, pick up your chumps and get the hell out of here before you regret it." Slowly twisting his sword in hand, he awaited the choice of the conscious trio, but only one would be beneficial to both parties involved. Which would they choose? |

It was clear that these men were either quite dense or still didn’t view these two young men as much of a threat despite the fact that two of their number had been removed from action in rather an efficient way because they glanced at each other, smiled nasty smiles and advanced. Now things were much more even and Trevor felt a surge of confdence. He took a firmer grip on the staff and glanced at his new companion. He said, “I’ll take the guy in front of me. These morons clearly don’t know when someone’s too much for them!” The thug facing him rushed forward and left an opening the size of a building for Trevor to exploit. The lanky young man sidestepped his clumsy rush and smacked him hard across the face with his staff. The heavyset man grunted, staggered but didn’t go down so the Northerner broke his nose with another blow and smashed the other end of the staff into his crotch. Now his opponent was down and not likely to get up again for some time. The agony would simply be too intense for him to even twitch. Now Trevor turned to see how his companion was faring in the fight. It appeared that he was quite capable of handling himself, at least against these inept thugs, so the lean young man decided that for now he’d leave his rescuer the chance to continue the fight. |
