Wilde walked around town, stretching as he went. It had been his first night in a while in something even resembling a bed, but it was still far from comfortable. Having to adjust to a more frugal lifestyle after counting how much cash he had left and thinking through how much it would cost to live off on his own and given him a slight fright. He was still in no emotional position to return home and honestly the thought brought bile to the back of his throat. His bed the night before had been in the cheapest B&B around, something akin to a rundown pub that had lost its liquor licence and now served non-alcoholic drinks from it’s too shabby to even be called shabby-shique premises. The bedroom was as run down as the rest of the building, but a roof over his head. Standing in front of a notice board, he quickly realised at how much a disadvantage he was in the general job market. He had very few marketable skills to get some easy cash and likely couldn’t return to his previous guard role without having the cash to settle down somewhere. His sullen feelings being buffered very much by his difficulty to show it outwardly, he just kept on reading down the board.
The rest of the job quotes were rather similar, they were looking for able bodied and available people for short term work, which was perfect for Wilde, the only problem is that he didn’t just have no aptitude for any of the magic they were asking for, he simply just didn’t have magic. He could see now why Mages could make their living simply drifting from job to job with no worry, they brought so much with them that he just couldn’t achieve. Reaching the bottom of the board, everything seemed to be similar to the first, unachievable for him. With the lighter weight in his pocket, he was all too well aware that he needed work and he needed it fast, leaving the city wouldn’t spell bankruptcy for him, but it wasn’t likely that he’d find much work in the country side besides farm work. And from the information he’d overheard while acting as a guard in his home town, they usually paid in food and lodging, the jewels were few and far between. “You might want to try over on the other sides of town.” A voice came from behind him, turning his head slowly, Wilde looked the older man blankly in the face, he wasn’t sure if the statement had been addressed to him, although there were few other people around. And even if it was he had no idea what the man was talking about. With a blank look on his face, Wilde simply raised his hand to gesture to himself? “Are you talking to me?” it wasn’t exactly cold but rather blank and unfeeling, the man had seemed soft enough, but with the mage heavy board, perhaps it was some territory sort of thing, a union who had a conglomerate on the jobs this side of the city. “Yes you.” The old man said, walking up the board and removing one of the signs. Once again he seemed soft and kind enough, but still Wilde waited to see what would happen next, the slight look of confusion on his face spelling the fact he wasn’t sure how to take this situation. “There’s a board on the other side of the city, on the other side of Main Avenue.” With that, the man started off, leaving him with little information. But seeming to sense the oddness in the situation, he halted his away march, not turning but once again addressing Percival. “It’s filled with jobs that don’t need magic, this is more of a speciality board.” With the explanation Wilde headed off with good speed towards this other board. Most jobs were apparently posted in the morning so if he wasn’t swift the work well may have already dried up. The other side of the city was easy enough to get to, and the board was in a rather signposted area, numerous agencies surrounded it who sought to find people work best suited for them. Of course they were meant for more long term stays, but it was all in effort to ensure everyone kept the city running as efficient as it could. Wilde’s fears were somewhat realised looking upon the other notice board, there were numerous tacks still imprinted into the cork board with fresh pieces of ripped of paper littered across. Looking around the few remaining things, there was little that popped out to him, but then the saying ‘beggars can’t be choosers’ came to mind. Breathing deeply he pulled one of the job descriptions from the board, a simple enough packing and delivery job and started off towards the described locations. It wasn’t long until the young man was stood outside a large bay door to some small warehouse, inside a few workers scurried around, packing boxes and piling them up; many of them seemed to be younger people who weren’t exactly built for anything manual. Many were having difficulty shifting the boxes around and were tiered even after doing the bare minimum. It didn’t take long of idle standing for someone to look over. The slightly timid young teens edged towards the unimpressed looking young adult, each of them seeming to rock-paper-scissors who’d talk to him. Instead of waiting for the small squabble to resolve itself, Wilde headed in, blankly saying to the closest who looked as though he was about to pee himself. “Where is the boss, I’m here about this.” Showing the job advert, the boy quickly took it and scurried off into a side room Wilde only noticed now since he was inside the warehouse. Likely to fetch the person in charge. While he waited, he looked at the other three boys who’d gathered around, their eye contact shifting from him to the floor the moment his line of sight sifted to them. “What? Quicker. Yes!” A taut voice echoed from off centre, the boys moving faster than he thought back to their previous locations in an attempt to seem busy as a small sharp looking woman in her mid-thirties appeared from stage left. Eying over her warehouse before shifting her attention to Wilde. “Only one?” |
