Your sea blue eyes gazed out at the rough waters off the shore of district four. It was the perfect weather for surfing, your surfboard clutched between your slender, delicate fingers and you smiled, your lips pulling up as you challenged Mother Nature. You’d been surfing since you could walk and were now about 17 years old approximately. You looked down at your black bikini and smiled, you had a nice figure but you didn't let it get to your head. Before heading out into the waves, you pulled back your thick waves of dark red curls with a black hair band and then jumped in, the cold water invigorating against your skin. The current tugged against your body but your long arms pushed you through the salty waves, stinging slightly against the long scar that stretched from just below your right eye down to the edge of your lip. The scar was from the accident that had killed your parents and should have killed you but somehow you managed to survive it. As you swam further out, your eyes caught sight of a huge wave headed your way. You smiled and stood up on your surfboard, balanced as you'd done this so many times. As the wave came up, you laughed, your laugh drowned out by the crashing of the waves. Your hand skimmed along the surface of the water as the white cap above your head turned over. You loved this feeling, it made you feel alive and reminded you as to why district four was the best district ever. Suddenly, as you were exiting the wave, you lost your balance and salty water engulfed you as you fell into its cold arms. You swam to the surface, your long legs kicking strongly as your drenched head resurfaced and you searched for your board. You found it not far away and swam over to it, latching on to it like a latch crab you'd seen in many hunger games. You pulled yourself up, the muscles in your arms pulling you onto the surfboard easily as they'd done this a million times. You took a quick inventory of yourself, making sure everything was alright before you began paddling back towards the shore. As you landed on shore, your eyes scanned for the little bag holding your clothes and towel. You spotted it hiding between two large rocks on the shore and, sticking your surfboard in the sand, went to retrieve it. You wrapped the towel around yourself, feeling the morning sun warm on your back, and dried your body off relatively well before setting your towel out and laying out on it to sunbathe for a few moments. The sun was warm against your tanned skin and you smiled, enjoying the mid-summer sun. Once you were dried completely, you slid on your summer dress over your bikini and headed up the stairs to the district. You let yourself into your aunts house, calling out a greeting before you changed out of your bathing suit and into a pair of jean shorts and a tank top. You headed back downstairs to where your aunt was preparing breakfast. You smiled. "How was your surf?" she asked. "It was good. What's for breakfast?" She smiled. "You'll see." You hated surprises, they drove you crazy. You knew she was doing this purposely and you sighed. A few moments later, she placed some fish in front of you and you looked at incredulously. Fish again? You thought disdainfully. Your mood was slowly souring, going from great to really unpleasant. You didn't say anything but you didn't want fish again, you were so tired of fish. "Would you mind going out and picking some things up for me from the store?" Your aunt asked once you were finished. You nodded, slipping on a pair of flip-flops. You didn't like flip-flops, their sound annoyed you to no end, but you would wear them if you had to. Your aunt handed you a few coins and a list of what she wanted and you headed out into the district. Flip, flop, flip, flop. The sound of the flip-flops echoed as you walked, feeling annoyance growing inside of you as you walked towards the store. Your mood kept souring until you knew that you'd snap at someone. You knew you shouldn't be grumpy because it was your own fault but you couldn't help being like that. You usually weren't a happy person anyways, except when you were surfing. That was the only time you were pleasant. You felt like yourself when you were surfing, alive and free, free to be yourself and not have to worry about anything like the games or whether you would be able to have food later that day. A bell rang as you entered the little shop, the coins jingling in your pocket. A boy, only a little older than yourself, rushed out to see you. "Hello, how can I help you?" He asked. You really weren't in the mood to be helped. "By leaving me alone." you said. He put his hands up, indicating he didn't mean anything and backed up. You checked the list and walked through the aisles, trying to find what you needed. You found everything and paid for it before leaving. As you padded down the street back towards home, you remembered your cousin, one of the few cousins you actually knew, Jay. His older brother, Mason had been in the games a few years back but had died in the bloodbath, his head crushed in. You remembered watching it, it had been very gruesome and you'd had nightmares for a few nights after that. You knew that Jay was never the same after that. You felt kind of bad for him, if you lost your older brother, Shun, you couldn't imagine you'd ever be the same. He was 19 now, too old to be reaped, but if he died, you would be crushed. He was important to you and one of the few people you actually let in to your feelings, the two of you had always been that way. You entered the house, your aunt still in the kitchen, and headed in to join her. She smiled at you. "I got what you wanted" you said. "Thank you, why don't you go out and do something today other than surfing? What about hanging out with your friends or something?" You sighed, you didn't really have many friends, not with your temper. "I don't really have any friends, I guess maybe I could go see if Jay or Shun is home?" you replied, slipping on a pair of more sensible shoes; sandals. You called a good-bye before heading out, trying to decide who you'd go visit. |
