Honesty without tact is cruelty.

Snow was in one of her favorite pubs, seriously considering the thought of buying it when Toby finally stopped vacillating and put it on the market. She had been here more than a few times, and it was like a second home. Besides, she needed something to occupy her time between guild missions. Thus place, both an inn and a bar, would be just the thing. Maybe. She would have to consider it for a while longer. And when she was less distracted.

It seemed there were some rumors going round the city. Something about orphans coming up missing from the local orphanage, and she wasn't sure what to make of it. She had plans, of course, to go and see the woman who was in charge of the orphanage. But she was waiting to see if she was meant to have back-up this time. She sighed, and ordered another glass of water while she waited.

The sun had been shining for most of the day, and now afternoon was drawing on. If she didn't hear anything about a partner between now and nightfall, she would simply go it alone. Couldn't let the innocent be abducted on her watch. No siree Bob.

Who you calling chocobo head...

"Are you sure this is the right place, Yenene?" the half dog-demon giving a sceptical look towards the canine spirit as they walked down the Poinsettia street. "Have a ever led you wrong, Kain?" the inugami looking up towards the Fairy Tail mage, and only grinning at the raised eyebrow saying 'Do you really want me to answer that?' "Have I ever led you wrong, when it really matters? I know you don't have sense of humour, but lying about orphans going missing doesn't have a good punch line." The currently more human looking of the pair just sighed, resting his hands behind his head as he stretched, long tail swaying behind him as it relaxed.

"Okay, fine, then why are we going to a pub, instead of going to the orphanage or following one of your leads? The longer we wait the harder it's going to be to track them." Said building coming into view, the spirit's body...shimmered? Shuddered? Hard to say even while looking at him directly even as he continued to talk. "Either it's been too long, or it'll be easy, I'm confident in your abilities. However, help is always appreciated, particularly for a matter where you might get..." the four-legged spirit picking his next word very carefully, and somewhat lamely settling for, "distracted." Before letting Kain follow up, the now human looking Yenene followed up, "Asides, this was easy to find out, surely other people will have heard of it by now. Try to find a partner to watch your back, save innocents faster."

The dog hanyou either unable or unwilling to argue that point, instead looked the resulting shape change up and down, blond-furred ears twitching as he titled his head, "Still have that red lock of hair." Yenene huffed, clearly more than a little annoyed that was still a problem with his ability, but now at the door of the pub, shrugged it off and instead pushed his way inside, leaving Kain behind him as he made his way to the bar and got a drink. "Sometimes I swear that's the only reason he ever goes around in a human body..." the teenager shaking his head a little, before looking around, not really sure what he was meant to do to look for help. Though of course regardless the obviously not human (or failing that very into kemonomimi cosplay) boy might attract some attention, and who knows what the canine spirit had gotten up too while he was gathering information, the Fairy Tail mage eventually making his way over next to Yenene and somewhat awkwardly just ordering a water.

The Lavender Dog was a staple in Snow's visits to Poinsettia. Toby took her order almost immediately and smiled at her, making small talk for a few moments before getting down to business. "So they sent you huh? It has gotten pretty damn bad, if I do say so myself Snow." He shook his head sadly. She knew good and well that he had put on that particular face of semi-happiness for his customers. It wasn't as if they had come here to make themselves feel worse by looking at a sad bartender. Snow knew all too well the faces people wore out of obligation. She nodded. "They sent me. With specific instructions no less. It could get messy."

Toby gave a half smile. "In this case, I think messy for the right people would be a good idea." He even gave a wink, the cheeky little thing. "Collateral damage is what I'm worried about." Snow lifted her chin to take in the whole of the bar and all of its patrons. "You shouldn't be. Sometimes collateral damage is necessary, in cases like this. Natural selection as it were." Snow quirked a dark brow. "Now that doesn't sound like something my favorite barkeep would say." The slightest hint of suspicion and anger crept into her voice and Toby, mild mannered thing that he was, threw up his hands. "We all have our points lass, where we give over our usual morals to do just what should be done. Made easier by not having to do it ourselves."

Snow nodded after a moment. The door to the tavern had been basically wide open all night, not swinging to a close as much as usual. Snow caught a strange smell as a strong northerly breeze wafted in. Something like wet dog. But that could mean nearly anything really. She simply ignored it for now. "So tell me what you've been hearing. I know full well you've had at least some small amount of gossip. I would be very interested to hear anything."

Toby looked dumbfounded for all of a minute, then he pursed his lips. He looked tired, and old, and for a moment, Snow worried about him. He recovered quickly enough of course. "There are several rumors flying to be sure. The most common, and the least likely in my humble opinion, is an old wives' tale. Something about a boogeyman that likes to steal away defenseless children in the dark of the night. Especially those who have no one to look out for them. On the other hand, and more logically, some say its the marm who watches over the orphanage. Say she's a nasty piece of work, who never minded harming a child."

It was a sad commonality that those children on the edges of society seemed to become expendable to most people. Snow sighed. "But why would they be missing then?" Toby leaned in closer, just a bit, so that he was whispering. "They say she went too far in one of the beatings. Say she killed one on accident, and all the others going missing is just covering her tracks. I don't know what to make of it." Snow stared at the wall behind Toby's head, calming her anger. It was only a theory, after all.

"Won't know til I start looking." Toby slapped her back and smiled. "Ayy. That's why you're here. And I wish you luck. Enjoy the butterbeer. It's on the house."

As skilled as Kain was in a combat situation and with his magic, at the end of the day he was a 17 year old kid who didn't really have much experience in well, dealing with normal human interaction thanks to his upbringing, and he was pretty bad at information gathering. Fortunately that's where having an experienced trickster spirit as an ally came in handy, situations like this more his element then the battlefield ever would be. That and bars, bars were always Yenene's element, but that was besides the point. Trying to get the attention of the barkeep he noticed he was busy talking to a pretty little thing that the spirit instinctively knew would be a horrible thing to say aloud within earshot of her.

For a man that made his living selling happiness in the form of liquid courage, the barkeep looked...weary, Yen supposed he called it, and stopped trying so hard to get his attention and instead listen in, drumming his fingers idly on the counter and looking uninterested as he focused his hearing. And what an interesting conversation it was, the canine spirit trying to not smile wide at being right; of course other people were here about the missing children. What he was hearing mostly lined up with what little he knew, orphans had been going missing, and no one was sure why. The two rumours on what might be happening to them was new information to him though, however investigating the orphanage seemed like the logical first step so he wasn't sure how important it was.

The part that did matter though, was that it was clear the rather attractive woman enjoying a drink was here about the kids, which meant potential ally found. Yenene nudge Kain, and indicated he should follow him, the inugami that currently looked like a 20-something, tall male with black hair (asides from a vibrant red lock of hair in his fringe) and golden eyes taking a seat next to the interesting woman, "Well, that's a shame, if it's on the house I can't offer to buy one," Yen grinning as Kain sighed, opting to just stand near the two as he pinched the bridge of his nose, ears going limp and tail going still, wondering what he did to get bonded to someone like this. "More importantly though, it sounds like you're looking for some missing kids?"

Snow eyed the strange mann who came to sit beside her. He smelled funny, but she couldn't place why. Dark eyesbrows arched up high as he made what could only he construed as a pass at her. She had been in the middle of taking a sip of her butterbeer, so she luckily didn't get the chance to make a smartass comment before he continued, and happened to pique her interest. "I am. I was sent to look for them."

She turned her head to the side, much like a curious bird might when inspecting something. She had every right to be suspicious if his question, and she should perhaps have been. She didn't get the right feeling from him for that though. He was maybe...Not quite what he seemed (anyone who flirted so openly automatically became suspect in her book), but he didn't seem inherently bad either. She sighed.

"I'm going to suppose, you have nothing to do with this. Therefore, I'm left with two options. Either you're exceptionally curious about something which has piqued your interest, or you want to help. Third, and much less likely option, you thought this would be a good way to open a conversation with a woman dressed mostly in leather. I say less likely, since it wouldn't be ah....Healthy for you."

Snow smiled as she got to the end of her spiel. She still had about a quarter of her butterbeer left, and she took another sip. "So, which is it? I've work to do, either way." She wasn't particularly happy to be shooting the shit when she should be up and away and looking already. Tracking more like. Either theory presented by Toby would be worth looking into, but she had a gut feeling it was going to turn out poorly for someone either way.

A smug look on his face, Yenene glanced back at Kain and grinned for being right, before turning back towards the mysterious woman and listening. The inugami otherwise just sat there, an amused smirk on his face as he let their potential ally talk, only being so 'well-behaved' because he knew Kain would make him shut up otherwise. Alas he really wasn't allowed to have any fun.

"Well, I'm also exceptionally curious about anything that a woman dressed in leather is interested in," the Fairy Tail mage behind him growling as he continued with a grin hopefully before either Kain or said woman could (mostly fairly) harm him, "but we're here to help. Or well, we," looking back towards the half demon, "are here because of the rumours buzzing around these missing kids and want to find them, and to stop them from going missing ever again. I just figured working together would be better over accidentally thinking the other party was responsible if we found each other while searching out there."

Kain sighed a little, Yenene really did love to talk. "Kain Inugami," as he offered his hand to the woman, "the one that loves to talk regardless of his health is Yenene. We're here to investigate the missing kids as well, and it's easier to work together." The canine spirit rolled his eyes, "Being succinct is boring, but yes, that." The half demon shrugged, his tail flicking from side to side, "No pressure either way, but we'll be around looking anyway. If nothing else I'm fairly useful as a tracker. If you're interested, we're ready to go now, if not, we'll get out of your way and wish you good luck."

Snow was torn between laughing and punching they guy. He hadn't broken into her bubble though, so he was mostly safe. So long as one didn't touch, and they weren't disgusting in the way they spoke to her, she would generally let them slide. Behind the figure who had been talking to her, she heard a low growl. It took a moment for her to register that this noise was from a person, and one who wasn't herself for a change. Interesting.

Kain intordced himself promptly while Snow was claming her inner wolf which was having wolfish thoughts. Mostly about sniffing and getting to know the persom before her. She nodded, appreciating the directness. "I'm Snow White. Its nice to meet you." She took a long look at Yenene and managed to smirk. "And you as well I suppose, though your partner is right. You should be more careful who you speak to thusly." Then she downed her drink in one long swig and stood. "Keep my room warm Toby, yeah?"

She nodded at the two strangers and motioned them toward the door. "We don't have all night you know." She was in a hurry. She hated the thought of children lost and possibly in pain somewhere when she could help. Snow made her way out into the streets, looking at and speaking to no one in the immediate area. Once she had cleared the crowd, she managed to find a quiet spot next to a large fountain which was partially frozen. "How much did you overhear?" The question was directed at Yenene.

She would wait for an answer. Then, "Right. Well, the orphanage is this way. If there's anything you need to have clarification on, let me know. It isn't that far from here."

Considering that Yenene had yet to be decked or have a drink thrown at him he figured he was behaving well enough, not that Kain seemed to agree (they never did on this point). That might have been why as Snow stood the canine spirit did so as well with a cheeky smile on his face, "Someone that was less of a gentleman would say something about helping to keep a room warm," Yenene letting his voice trail off as he found Kain death glaring at him. "Nice to meet you too," the half demon smiling pleasantly as he turned back to looking at Snow, motioning towards the door and following after her. "Lead on, then." Yen just had a nervous smile, following after the both of them, "...Which is why I'm shutting up and following, yes. Lovely to meet you too Miss White."

However much Yenene had be cowed by Kain had already worn off by the time they reached an out of the way fountain freezing up under the weather, grinning as he shrugged, "Oh you know, just the interesting bits." The Fairy Tail mage rolled his eyes but luckily the spirit continued without being prompted, "Children going missing, your bartender friend mentioning the two main rumours circulating being either some child snatching monster, or the much more mundane but perhaps arguable more likely that the local matron of the orphanage is a cruel person." He let a short, humourless chuckle as his form shimmered. "Humans really are the worst monsters aren't they..." his voice trailing off and changing as his body lost form, surrounded by a cloud of magic and leaving Yenene in his natural form, a vaguely canine shaped spirit, if with strange and vibrant red markings and almost a mane of fur.

Kain just sighed; as seemed to be becoming habit around Yenene; looking a little awkward, "That's normal for him, he's an inugami, a canine spirit. Something of a trickster or mischievous spirit too." The half demon feeling like he should clarify the sudden transformation to avoid any possible rash actions from Snow. She seemed reasonable enough but it doesn't cost anything to explain. "Anyway, uh, that all seems pretty straight forward, sooner we get to the orphanage the more likely we might find some of the missing ones alive." Yen even in his natural form had a wide grin, long tail flicking side to side, "Aww, Kain, you didn't mention how you're stuck with me, am I growing on you?" earning a growl and a breathless, "Don't push your luck," from the Fairy Tail mage.
