Embodiment of Pandemonium/Aspect of Sacrifice
|
The beast let out a howl of rage as it attempted to regain balance, the Ravagers bearing down on it. Pushing forward, he swiped at one, tossing it out of the way before its blade could taste flesh, but the second one's attack was no evaded as easily. The blade sunk into the creature's shoulder, bringing it close enough for Big Pops to grab it and throw. Though neither of these actions would destroy the Ravagers, it didn't give him the small window he so desperately wanted. Charging forward, Zeph, at first, thought it was going for Varriden, but it became quickly obvious that it was not. Zeph was still struggling to return to his feet as the monster approached him once more. No sword in hand, and no coordination to successfully evade the massive thing, he resorted to using magic once again. Bringing his hand up in front of him, he quickly focused. He had not used this spell outside of practice before, so was not sure if it would be fully effective, but he had no choice. "Demonic Symphony!" A light shimmer expanded from Zeph's body, rapidly, before vanishing. The sonic boom had struck Big Pops, and had been enough to stall him in his attack, but not enough to toss him back. Hand dropping, Zeph hoped now that either Varriden or his puppets took this chance to strike the beast down. Without intervention, he was about to take quite the blow, and he wasn't sure he would be able to stand back up. Gritting his teeth, Zeph's burnt-orange eyes met with the monster's deep red, showing his continued resistance, even in his vulnerable position. No weapon, no spells that could be used, and no way of moving his body in time. How was it that he seemed to often end up with himself backed up against a wall, just showed that he was still not nearly strong enough to walk through this world alone. |

To Big Pops' credit, despite being thrown off-balance by the beam of sound from Zeph, he still managed to fend off the Ravagers while trying to remain on his feet, swiping one aside in a manner similar to how he had Zeph - though with less success, owing to the Ravager's metal hide and considerable weight from that very metal - but that momentary focus on the first Ravager distracted Big Pops from the second Ravager, which ended up being a mistake, as the Ravager's blade bit deep into Big Pops' shoulder, though Big Pops followed up with an attack of his own by throwing that Ravager aside, as well, seeming unhindered by the blood leaking from his sliced shoulder. The Ravagers were fine, aside from slight dents where the claws had struck the first Ravager, but the Ravagers weren't Big Pops' target. At first, it almost seemed as if Big Pops was going for Varriden, but soon enough, Varriden realized that the angle he was running at wasn't proper if he was truly gunning for the Archive mage, so Varriden could only assume he was going for Zeph - though why someone who'd saved Zeph and raised him would want him dead was beyond Varriden just at that moment. Even though Varriden wasn't the target, he still leapt back a short distance as Big Pops passed - Varriden might not have been the target of his aggression, but there was always the chance that he'd try to swipe at him again as he passed - he'd tried to not moments ago, after all, and had only failed because of Zeph's intervention. Zeph, however, was on his feet, as the attack by the Ravagers, while only partially successful, had given the sound mage time to get back on his feet from where Big Pops had flung him, as well as retrieve his parasol-sword. Varriden thought Zeph would use the sword on Big Pops, since he hadn't gotten the chance to draw it last time, but instead, Zeph raised a hand and released a small burst of sound, but in every direction, echoing slightly through the street. A miniature sonic boom of sorts? Varriden thought, observing with his still-active Decipher. Probably won't stop Big Pops cold, but interesting use of sound. Unfortunately, the spell had less effect than either Zeph or Varriden had hoped - unlike the earlier blast, it didn't knock Big Pops over, merely slowed his pace for a few steps as he lumbered towards Zeph. The silver lining, however, was that the brief slacking of pace was just enough for the Ravagers, who'd done a 180 to pursue Big Pops after he'd taken off, to catch up - the first Ravager raised his sword in an overhand blow with the flat of the blade, intending to brain Big Pops with it, while the second dove low, slashing at Big Pops' legs to slow or stop his running around. |

It would seem that the Ravagers did their job quite well. The second Ravager's swing at Big Pop's leg hit it's mark. Slicing through the calf, the beast let out a deep howl before its leg gave out from under him, however, forward momentum allowed him to continue moving forward. This would have been very bad for Zeph if the first Ravager had not also been on the move. The flat of it's blade came rushing down, clocking the thing on the top, back, of the head. Zeph could see it's eyes unfocused from the blow, and recognized the dazed look that appeared on his face. Zeph, taking a small jumping step to one side, allowed Big Pops to fall to the ground unhindered, and unconscious. What had looked to be a very difficult battle had turned out to be relatively easy, thanks to the magics that Varriden had in his arsenal. Slowly stepping around the monster, Zeph moved to retrieve his parasol from the ground, now that he had regained full mobility and his head had cleared from the initial blow. Checking on it for damage, he noticed that the wood that acted as, both, the parasol's handle and the sheath for his blade was split, and barely holding together. It would seem that it was about time for him to invest in a new parasol, or perhaps consider a new weapon all together. Looking to Varriden, he stepped closer before voicing his question. "I must ask. What kind of magic is it that you wield?" He glanced at the Ravagers. Though useful, they did not seem to fit Varriden very well, as if the magic was his to begin with, though he was often wrong about these things. After a moment, he unsheathed his blade, moving to Big Pops, and placing it at the base of it's skull. "Shall we dispose of the beast? There is no telling how long it will take for it to awaken, and we may not be able to get any answers out of it, though I would appreciate your opinion on the matter," It felt odd to turn to someone else for the answer on what to do next, but it had been shown to him that he was unable to make correct human choices in these matters. His mind was built for war, no matter how human he was now. In these moments, death was the only choice that came to mind. It was in this moment that something dawn to Zeph. Despite his issue before from being throw against the wall... He could have flown out of harms way... Zeph could not believe how stupid he had become. |

The second Ravager's strike ending up being the first to hit home, as unlike the first Ravager, it didn't have to alter its elevation as much as the first Ravager did - whereas the first had to rise to Big Pops' head height (which was rather noteworthy now) the second merely had to fly low enough to slash at Big Pops' legs, successfully hacking at the back of Big Pops' legs with its iron sword that resembled cast iron - a rough slash, but it did the job, as with Big Pops bearing down on Zeph, Varriden didn't have time to command his Ravagers to do the job neatly. Big Pops roared in pain, though he kept moving forward - with the speed he'd been rushing at Zeph with before, it would have taken more effort to stop than to continue, even with one of his legs refusing to support his weight anymore. Then the second - or rather, the first, just not in terms of attacking order - brained Big Pops with the flat of his blade, and Big Pops fell silent, then swiftly keeled over, collapsing with a loud 'thud' on the ground. For a moment, Varriden was worried that he'd collapsed on top of Zeph anyway, as close as he had been to his target, but thankfully Zeph appeared off to the side of Big Pops as the dust from his fall cleared, unharmed aside from the earlier strike he'd been hit with. Zeph, however, seemed more curious about Varriden than Big Pops' apparently betrayal or his own condition. Odd that he's curious about that, of all things, but given the Ravagers, I can't exactly blame him for wondering, Varriden thought. "Archive." Varriden replied. "It has its uses. Allowing me to replicate magic I've witnessed used before is one of the perks to it - like the Ravagers there," Varriden said, gesturing at the Ravagers, who gave a brief salute with their blades before vanishing in a brief flash of flame. More surprising was that he left the issue of Big Pops to Varriden as well. "I don't think that's a good idea," Varriden said, sheathing his greatsword on his back holster. "Last I checked, you mentioned that he raised you and saved you -I'd say you owe him one, and not killing him sounds like a decent a way as any to repay him." Varriden pointed out. "Besides, if Big Pops suddenly vanished from the tavern, people would wonder what happened." |
