Snow sighed as he presented his anger. She had been waiting for it, of course, but she hadn't expected it to be quite so vehement. "I was sent here by the Guild in case you've forgotten. I have a mission to finish whether you like it or not." Her anger was just as righteous as his. He might be thinking only of her well being, and that might be weirdly endearing, but she was, as always, looking at the bigger picture. She didn't put herself above much of anyone. And she was still in the midst of proving herself to the people she called family. She stood up to meet him toe to toe, despite being injured still. His quiet and yet solemn exclamation had her searching for words again. He was stubborn enough to do it, and she didn't take this for anything less than what it was. Stay alive, or she would be killing uncounted innocents by proxy. Message delivered. Of course he came over to help her, and she didn't say a word. She was, for once, out of them. He took all of a minute to get her fully unclothed, and she sighed. She had meant to turn and pick up the dress, but his words stopped her and she shot him a look somewhere between amusement and disapproval. He wouldn't..."Ranth...Behave." But of course the warning came too late. Not that she was complaining. She followed behind him down the steps behind the portrait in the portrait in the wall twenty minutes later. She couldn't quite help the flush to her cheek, or that she was busy patting at her hair as they entered the room. At least Ranth's mood had improved markedly. She made a note of that fact for the future. The gown Snow now wore matched almost perfectly the one Mokra wore. It was long and flowing. A blue evening gown that reached the floor, and her hair was soon to be fixed by Alexandria to match the way Mokra was wearing her own. "Outline the plan. I want this over with, and quickly. I've spent too much time in these parts already." It was exceptionally difficult to keep herself serious at this point, with a silly smile threatening to pull up the corners of her lips. She shook her head to clear away all thoughts of the exceptionally comfortable sleeping quarters upstairs. She paid attention as the plan was outlined. "This is very simple. We will be hiding your .. Ranth.. away from the public eye. He will be able to see you at all times, but you and everyone else will.be unable to readily see him. Don't worry, you'll be within easy distance of her at all times. Via the box from which you will be watching her. A pane of glass behing what appears to be a portrait has been enchanted so you can see out and no one else can see in. Easily broken if there's an emergency." Snow nodded once. "And what will I be doing precisely?" Mokra smiled softly. "I am to host a dinner this evening of just my nobles and myself, to celebrate my return. If my guess is right, it is one of my lords who was behind this, of which there are only three. The election means that the most popular or the most feared would be chosen, which narrows this to two. He doesn't know I know, whichever one he is. And I feel at this point he will be getting desperate. All you have to do, is sit at the table. Don't eat or drink anything. And when the time comes make a speech in my place. I think he will make a move then." Snow swallowed hard. "Make a speech huh?" She sighed as the note cards were handed to her so that she might have a chance at actually making the speech viable. She wasn't very happy about the whole speech thing. But she could live with the rest. Pictures were passed around of the two prime suspects so that both she and Ranth would be able to look out for them. One was a youngish man, though he looked more introverted and scholarly. The other was slightly older, and looked highly pissed. Apparently they didn't have any photos where he didn't look angry. Snow comitted the faces to memory as best she could. "Are you okay with this Ranth?" She was asking earnestly. If he said no, and no better plans could be made, she would leave with him no questions asked. But she wasn't going to tell him that. |

While Snow was going over her lines, so to speak, Ranth was busying himself with the pictures laid out on the table with the two most likely suspects. Of course, they were putting a substantial amount of faith in the Sumire family's investigative ability, but Ranth wasn't going to go into the room assuming that anybody in the room didn't mean harm to the woman he loved so in that regard one could suppose it didn't matter. He paid a little attention to the women as they outlined his role in what was to come and he tilted his head thoughtfully, but didn't comment immediately. He was, despite the circumstances, amused by the prospect of Snow having to give a speech in front of an enormous audience. He knew that she was, despite what one might think, actually quite shy and she would rather fight an arch demon than give a public address. When finally asked directly for the final time if he was on board for this, he sighed deeply and then shrugged in defeat. "Count me in, but I'm not going to sit on the sidelines..." he grinned at the pair of women who, perhaps understandably, looked rather alarmed not only by his words, but his blasé attitude. "What exactly do you mean by that?", Mokra asked warily. "Well... I think I'd be better off mingling with the crowd rather than slinking in the shadows", Ranth explained with a brief wave of his hand and a confident smirk. Alexandria however, wasn't buying it. "That's preposterous! You'll stick out like a sore thumb and put everything in jeopardy!" She exclaimed angrily and Mokra put a hand on her shoulder to soothe her. "Of course, I understand your concern", Ranth said as he inspected his fingernails. "I just don't care". Then in a flash of light, Ranth's attire changed dramatically and the women in the room were left looking at an outfit that transformed him drastically. "See? I'll fit right in", Ranth laughed and then gestured to the door. "Shall we go then?" Of course, it wasn't really a question and before either of their 'hosts' could respond, Ranth shot Snow a wink. "Don't worry about a thing, just sit there and look pretty and everything will be okay". He was joking of course, choosing words that he knew would get him in trouble later. But then again, there was something irresistibly sexy about that women when she was cross with him. Then with one final wink, he slipped from the room ahead of them on his way to the grand hall where many of the guests had already gathered. Leaving behind three rather disgruntled women in his wake... |

Snow really should have expected him to do something other than what the people they were essentially working for wanted them to do. She should have. And yet somehow he still managed to surprise her. She spent a few minutes studying the cards for the speech a little too hard in an effort to keep from laughing. Clearly the other two women didn't know in the slightest who they were dealing with. Snow barely masked a giggle at their absolute outrage. His wardrobe change made Snow smile. He was always awfully good at that. She wanted very much to just stand up and follow him out of the room. But she stayed seated. She may have quirked a brow at his parting shot, familiar ire rising at his words. She didn't exactly have time to do anything about it though. He was out the door before she, or the other two could say a word. Of course once he was gone the other two began speaking in a flurry of words, most of which were curses. A vase was thrown, and something was said about the stubborness of me. Snow stood up, turning to both of them who looked anything but lady-like in this moment. "Stubborn idiot!" Snow crossed her arms over her chest. "Damn moron! He will ruin everything!" Snow cleared her throat and they both suddenly remembered she was in the room. "Careful there..ladies. We can walk out on your asses at any given moment. You continue to insult the man I love, I will happily do so. What he does, he does for my sake. If you don't like it, you can both fuck off as far I'm concenred." She was no longer smiling and both of them shifted uneasily under her direct gaze. "The deal was, he's involved, he likes the plan, or there's no deal. So, do we have a deal?" There was again dead silence for a little while. Mokra cleared her throat. "Of course we do. Sorry." Alexandria made about the same speech, and Snow followed them out. She was lead into a massive room by Alexandria where Ranth would no doubt be circulating already. She painted on a smile, and stood a little straighter, and for a moment she was unrecognizable as her own usual self as she entered the room. She looked just like the noble she was meant to be playing. |

"Smile for the cameras" Ranth chuckled as he turned to face the sudden photography flash with his lips casually curled into his usual smirk. "And wink for the ladies", he continued as he turned his gaze towards a woman in a black and blue dress, his eyes glancing over her form from bottom to top before his left eye momentarily winked shut, briefly catching the heart of the wearer much to the chagrin of her male companion. Nobody knew him here save for Snow and the two women who had caused them nothing but trouble and he knew that if he got too carried away then he'd be in more trouble than any amount of tail was worth. Yet despite having said that, Ranth couldn't help but fail to contain a mischievous but confident grin as the woman approached him. The expression was only magnified in smug satisfaction based on the fact that the woman had left her former companion. Ranth shot the man a passing glance with a raised eyebrow. The clearly upset individual exchanged with a vicious glare, angry over the fact that Ranth charmed his companion with but a glance and a smirk. Poor sod never stood a chance. On the other hand, the woman seemed mostly unconcerned with her former companion. If anything, she seemed far more interested in spending her time with the roguish man, standing closely to him as the two meandered throughout the grand hall. It was time for Ranth to turn on his charm as he would draw far less attention if he was seen to be mingling than if he loitered at the back of the room brooding while he waited for an unknown assassin to make their move. Yet, at the same time he needed to maintain a bit of distance, at least mentally anyway for obvious reasons. Like being able to sleep soundly without fear of being smothered by his beloved yet exceptionally jealous girlfriend. "A green carnation. It suits you", Ranth murmured to the woman, stepping forward to lean a bit more closely, speaking in a slightly hushed tone. The dark haired woman's eyes perked up as she looked at him, lightly touching the flower that adorned her hair. "Oh, you don't seem like the type of man who knows his flowers. color me surprised." ranth's' lips curled into a soft smile as he leaned against the wall, standing next to his lovely female companion. "What can I say? I'm a man of many mysteries" he said with his hand reaching out to gesture towards a passing man with a plate of champagne. Ranthpassed a glass towards the woman before taking one of his own, smelling the contents momentarily before taking a brief sip of carbonated sparkling wine. At that moment, a sudden hush fell over the crowd as a great set of double doors opened at the opposite end of the hall to where Ranth had entered and all eyes turned towards them and the exquisitely dressed woman who stepped through them. Many would look and see Mokra, heir to the legacy of her late father, the Duke. But Ranth saw only Snow White, fairest woman in the land as she stepped to the edge of the balcony that looked down on the rest of the room as she was announced by a herald along with a great list of titles. Then when that was done, 'Mokra' would give her speech. |

Snow walked out onto the balcony with a lump in her throat. She was a skilled warrior. A damn fine huntress. A mage for heaven's sake. And she still had to swallow hard and do her best not to stutter over the words she had been given. Everyone was staring. Which was her least favorite part. Not only that but she was making an effort to keep her eyes on them and scan the crowd at all once. She found Ranth immediately of course, and suppressed a scowl as she spotted some busty brunette practically hanging all over him. Well, the anger made her job a hell of a lot easier. And it made the haughty stance she needed go adapt all that much more realistic. She would be having words with him later. There was mingling, and then there was having a death wish. Apparently her boyfriend was content with the latter. The details of the speech were less than important. Just a long spiel about politics and how people should support Mokra. How she had survived an ordeal recently that had put her on edge and that had made her more wary of those who might move against her. At the least Mokra had been right about one thing. The kidnapper was absolutely getting desperate. Snow could see them all, and hear them despite her own words. She heard the gun cocking long before he brought it out of his jacket. But she still waited, to see if he was really that stupid. And he was. It wasn't one of the men on the list, but it was a man that would be recognizable to Mokra and Alexandria all the same. He was one of the younger men in the crowd. And he had been following (surprise surprise) a cute brunette around all evening as she hung all over Ranth. The gun came up and out as she neared the end of Mokra's speech, and Snow dove reflexively away from the shot. She heard it hit the marbled wall behind her and stay there as the room broke into a panic. The other current issue you be that she was now hanging from a goddamn balcony, and wondering why women wore dresses they couldn't climb in. Annoying. |

The woman beside him was speaking, but Ranth was doing a very good job of looking like he was listening when in reality not a single word penetrated his psyche. It was a skill that any good assassin or boyfriend quickly learned to master and Ranth was no exception- though from which of these two disciplines he learned it was anybody's guess. But rather than simply ignoring her for the sake of it, Ranth was actually scanning the room with sharp eyes for any sign of trouble and of course, it wasn't long before he found it in spades. The glint of flashing steel drew Ranth's eyes to the gun as it was drawn out of the very same man's pocket as the one that Ranth had 'appropriated' his date from. The people closest to the man screamed and cowered, but not before the single shot was fired straight at Snow. There had been no pause, no hesitation. He hadn't even seemed to take more than an instant to aim which meant he was either a pro or using a weapon that did the hard work for him. In any case, Ranth was halfway to the man by the time the shot had been fired and he had just enough time to see that the shot hadn't seem to have hit its mark before the whole room went crazy as everyone in the room surged towards the exit all at the same time. All that was except for Snow, Ranth and the would-be assassin who was moving against the throng i order to reach the dangling woman and finish his mission at all costs. Well not if Ranth had anything to say about it. As the man raised his weapon and leveled it at Snow's exposed back, Ranth caught up with him and lashed out at the hand holding the weapon at the same time that he pulled the trigger. The shot went askew, missing Snow by inches as it ricocheted off of the railing beside her in a shower of sparks. Cursing the man tried to throw Ranth off, but the archivist rode him to the ground and slammed his wrist hard to dislodge his grip on the weapon. "Who are you?" he demanded coldly. "Who else is working with you?" Ranth wasn't so naive as to think there would only be one assassin sent to ensure that Mokra didn't leave this event save for in a body bag and he had precious little time before they would be likely to reveal themselves. |

Snow felt the air from the bullet, and ducked her head instinctively as it hit the railing above her and sent sparks flying. The man on the ground was now making noises which sounded like nothing so much as whining and possibly choking as Ranth questioned him intensively. Snow, meanwhile, was struggling not to fall to the marble floor. It was lucky that Alexandria chose that moment to help her up, by pulling on her arms to get her onto the balcony. It seemed she was shot though, somehow. Likely from the ricochet. It was a flesh wound which had pierced her bicep. And while many of the people on the floor had fled, now more than a few before unnoticed guards had showed up, giving Ranth some form of back up. Snow rested against the wall for a few moments and then stood, heading downstairs. The man was already mid confession by this point. But she marched up just the same, eyes glowing a slight yellow. She kicked him once, soundly, in the ribs. He stopped talking for a minute a few dozen sets of eyes were on her in a moment. "That's for shooting at me. Twice. Fucker." She scowled down at the man. "Now keep talking. You ass." She still meant to have words with Ranth, but that would keep until this part was over. The man resumed whatever he had been sayin, though now he was a bit more breathless. "I was....Saying....I was here alone. I was hired by my Lord Morrigan to come here tonight." He wasn't one of the two that had been showed to Ranth and Snow. He was one of the few who were conspicuously absent. Snow made a face. This was indeed a bit too convenient. But she wouldn't fight it. She crouched down, putting her face close the the man's own. "You are aware, I'm sure, that should you be lying, you will be happily hunted down and squashed like a bug...Right?" The man swallowed hard. "Y-yes. I'm not lying. I swear." Snow stood again. Behind her Mokra, the real one, and Alexandria were now entering the room. She wasn't sure if they wanted to keep this man as a prisoner or witness or whatever, nor did she particularly care. She had been shot at. And she had had to give a speech. All she wanted now, was the recuperate from her injuries, and maybe yell at Ranth a bit. "We done here?" She directed the question to her doppelganger and waited for her to answer. |

As Ranth wrested with the man none too gently, he wasn't about to take anything the man said at face value. Luckily, he had other methods of extracting the truth from someone and many would argue that telepathy was both the most effective and the most invasive method around. Not that things like that would stop Ranth from taking the course of least resistance as e pierced the man's mind like a hot knife through butter and looked at the man's thoughts and recent memories and, to his surprise, the man was telling the truth. At that moment the real Mokra, Snow and Alexandria arrived on the scene and it was now only the four of them in the room as everyone else had been corralled out of the room by the newly arrived guards who now blocked every exit with weapons drawn. Ranth cracked a smile as Snow gave the man a good kicking and nobody even contemplating intervening. She was entitled to a little rough justice in everyone's opinion. "Yes..." Mokra said after a long pause as she considered Snow's question. "With the assassin in custody, his testimony will be more than enough to bring Lord Morrigan to justice", she said grimly as the guards came and apprehended the man who's head hung limp with defeat as he was dragged away to the prison cells beneath the Sumire mansion. "You alright?" Ranth said quietly to Snow, completely ignoring the fact that Alexandria had been shot. She was someone else's girlfriend to worry about after all. Once he was satisfied that hadn't been hurt, a faint grin graced his lips. "Can I take it that this counts as finishing your mission and we can go home now?" He asked with one eyebrow raised questioningly. Mokra meanwhile was fussing over Alexandria's wound whilst the woman did her best to shoo away her not-so-secret lover's tender administrations. |

The man was dragged away. Her job was officially finished. And it was the middle of the night and she was tired. (Though not imprisoned so +1.) She smiled softly at Ranth as he asked after her well being. Unlike Alexandria she was pretty okay with being fussed over just this tiny bit. But of course, then memory kicked in in place of adrenaline and her face changed almost immediately to a look Ranth should be fairly familiar with. Her eyes narrowed, and her face became stone otherwise. "Yeah, I'm fucking fine. Not like, blind or anything. So you know. I could see the bimbo following you around and hanging on your every word. You jackass." She growled at him, hands on hips. "You may go home if you so desire. But it is late, and I am tired. And there is a huge empty bed upstairs that is all squishy and perfectly acceptable for an evening of rest, thank you very much." Alexandria was still busy blushing and pretending she wasn't enjoying every second of being fussed over. Snow rolled her eyes. "It is allowable that I stay in my previous room upstairs for the evening yes?" Mokra nodded. "Perfectly so. I cannot thank you enough for the services you have provided Miss White. I will be more than happy to come to the aid of Grimoire Heart anytime they call on our humble part of the world." Snow smiled and nodded. Grimoire Heart is always happy to be of service." "When it suits their plans." she didn't say. She turned back to Ranth. "See. Room and board for the evening on top of everything else. In case you've forgotten, I'm injured. Now, off to bed for me. See you..At home. Or upstairs. Your choice." She was still incredibly pissed some girl had been hanging all over him. But she felt better after screaming at him. She usually did. She wasn't sure why it worked out so well that way, but it did. And she found the room soon enough, not quite content to wait and see which decision he would make. She went inside and shut the door without locking it, disrobed and threw herself back into the bed and rolled up in the blankets. "Stupid Ranth. Stupid bimbo." She scowled into the duvet. They could head home in the morning. She wasn't going anywhere tonight. And it was likely she would kick him in the morning (or whenever she saw him). |

Not many things elicited much of a reaction from Ranth besides amusement, derision, scorn and occasionally surprise (both good and bad). But when Snow fixed him with that look his smile froze in place and he paled a little as he knew that he was in for verbal lashing and sure enough... that's exactly what he got. "But I...", he tried to interject, but was ignored. "But she...", again, no dice. "I was just...", yeah he really was just wasting his breath at this point. As quickly as it had come, the storm passed. Or t least, Snow had stopped shouting. Ranth had learned better than to think that he as out of the dog house just because the volume had gone down. He also certainly wasn't going to protest against the woman's desire to go straight to bed. Again, he simply knew better by now than to deny her of things like food, sleep, adorable animals and... other things that didn't bear mentioning. Not that he was complaining about her... demanding appetite for... physical activity. As Snow stormed off to bed, Ranth started a quiet countdown from one hundred in his head. That was- he had learned through trial and error at great risk to himself- precisely how long he was required to wait before going after her to make it up to her. Bidding the two other women a vague goodnight, he retraced the path to the bedroom easily enough and there he found his beloved sulking grumpily and he couldn't resist smiling as he flopped down beside her and whispered in her ear. Thirty seconds later, Snow was certainly giving something to him, but it wasn't a good kicking and when all was said and done, balance had been restored and Ranth was out of the dog house once more. The next morning, they left with the rising sun. They didn't say goodbye to the women who now owed them their allegiance. There was nothing left to say that hadn't already been said and they'd been away from the guild for far too long as it was- Snow especially. Vince had gone back ahead of them the previous day to inform them that everything was under control, but there would doubtless be more than a few missions piled up on their respective plates already. Such was the joy of being useful to an organisation like Grimoire Heart Thread End |
