Snow turned on her side, again feigning sleep. Or she had been, for a minute. The she fell into an actual deep sleep, one in which she dreamed several extremely weird dreams, all of them involving her being stuck in the cell for all eternity. She managed to wake silently, though it was with a start nonetheless. She had chided herself fully on waking, for letting her guard down so easily when it was only earlier that she had been given a split lip for her trouble of napping. Now she was wide awake, and the room was mostly dark. But she could hear a new sound. Someone was snoring, in a most unladylike fashion, and she figured it was a safe bet her new guard had fallen asleep. Perfect. She slipped the small piece of metal out of her corset, and moved swiftly to the door of her cell. It seemed it was a lock that was easily pried open, as it took no more than a few moments of wriggling for it to pop the lock, silently at that, and the well oiled hinges of her cell kept her exit quiet. She moved swiftly, tasting freedom close at hand. Or so she had initially thought. It seemed that the tower itself went on for some time. What she had thought might be a crumbling ruin was actually a well maintained guard tower at the very least. Up the stairs on silent feel she went, finding the first landing guarded by skinny and not-so-skinny, though they too had fallen asleep at their posts. Well this was handy. She kept going, finding where her weapons were, finding a good many things taken off of other people as well. It seemed these people were more or less thieves by trade. Interesting. It took two more levels of climbing for her to find a singular window in the side of the tower. This showed her where she was, and she pursed her lips in slight annoyance. Dandelion Sector was the asshole of Fiore. Full of all the unwanted people and classes and castes that were merely scattered elsewhere. Well, wasn't this just fucking peachy. She groaned inwardly, but could soon see that they weren't so terribly far from an exit, if she could get the others free. If they could all sneak out as silently as she had. If she could incapacitate their guards with little noise. If there weren't still more people out there under their payroll who would try to stop them. She rested her head against the bars and made a quick decision. She wouldn't be able to get everyone out safely at this rate. And she doubted they would remain safe if she left them. So she tip-toed back down the stairs. And set down the weapons she had silently gathered. And went back to her cell and softly, oh so softly, shut the door. At this point in time her guard jumped to awareness, and looked over at her. She was pretending to work out again. Well, she was working out, but it wasn't what she had been doing, though it explained neatly enough why she was out of breath, and sweating slightly. When she stopped he was still looking her way, so she gave a slight wave. "Fell asleep at the wrong time I guess. Sorry for waking you." She stood up and moved over to the cot, leaning against it. She would wait, til they were all up. Then she would ask some questions. And hope for another opening. |

"Show some respect you whelp!" it was Gairon who answered Ranth's question and his indignation was palpable. "This is Lady Sumire, head of the Sumire household and-" "Yes thank you Gairon, but I'm quite capable of speaking for myself", the woman interrupted him with the faintest touch of exasperation and to his credit, Gairon silenced himself admirably, albeit begrudgingly. Though Ranth had to admit that he quite liked the cut of this woman's jib- or at least that's how he thought the Fioran saying went- from what he'd seen of her so far. "As my vassal said, I am the head of the Sumire household, Alexandria Sumire", the woman said. "Now I feel I've been extraordinarily polite and not to mention lenient towards two strangers who for all appearances have come only to stir up trouble. I would have your names at least and your purpose for coming here as well". It was politely phrased, but it was the closest thing to a command without actually being one and Ranth himself smiling without meaning to. "I suppose that's fair. I am Ranth and my associate here is Vince. Despite appearances, we didn't come here to take part in...this", he gestured broadly in a gesture that encompassed Sampaguitown and the political intrigue that plagued it. "Then why are you here? There's no other purpose but the one you just discounted for anyone with a brain to come here voluntarily", Alexandria stated flatly. Again Ranth found himself grinning just a little as this kind of bluntness reminded him of another woman in his life. "As I was explaining to your subordinate before things... got out of hand... we're looking for someone who was on their way here and went missing. So while we don't intend to take sides, we simply wish to find our companion and then leave you to tear the city apart to your hearts content". He was being insubordinate but this was Ranth and he cared very little for formalities where he could get away with it and the woman's eyes narrowed a little at this blatant disregard for her authority and for the severity of the civil unrest that threatened to tear the place apart. "Well... as it happens we're looking for someone as well", Alexandria said slowly. "So perhaps we can help each other. But I would prefer to relocate to a place with less eyes and ears to finish this conversation... if that's agreeable with you?" These last words were positively oozing with derision, prompting Ranth to grin once more. "Lead the way", he replied with a playful bow and fell into step behind her and Gairon as they led them away from the scene of Ranth's battle with gairon and towards the mansion of the Sumire household. |

Snow slept again for a bit (she was starting to feel bad for all the napping truth be told, but there wasn't a lot else she could do.) When she woke again, their jailors were ladeling out food again, and she got a decent sized portion of something akin to gruel to scarf down. It was warm at least, she would give it that much. Now the only thing she needed to worry about was how to approach her jailors in order to get the information she wanted, without seeming like she was gettimg information at all. "Thanks." She said to the big one as he left her food, and again when he took her plate. It seemed there would be a change of guard every now and then, and the big one was to be next. She figured this was somewhat serendipitous since he was probably the least intelligent of the three, and she might be able to finagle answers from him more easily than she would from the others. So she set about this carefully. "Nice place you have here. Worked here long?" He looked confused when she addressed him but not unreceptive to the attention. She was willing to bet that he would be easy enough to manipulate when it came right down to it. People like him were always taken for granted, and usually overlooked. "I ...For a bit." Well that was more taciturn than she needed it to be. "I mean, if you've been with this...Whatever it is for a while, I would assume you were getting well paid. I bet you do most of the work, right Darius?" He nodded quickly. And gave her a lopsided smile. "I do everything here. Work hard. Not make such good money, but I work hard." Snow nodded slightly, painting a look of sympathy on her face. "I believe it. Bet they don't really appreciate you here at all right?" He shook.his head sadly. "Call you names?" He nodded and she made a sound of sympathy in the back of her throat. "You could always come work for GH, if you liked. We like having people we can trust to do the heavy lifting." That was a damn lie. "You...You think so?" Snow nodded, giving him a wink. She could work this out a little more, she had no doubt, but footsteps were sounding on the stairs, so she held a finger to her lips, telling him to keep the secret, just a bit longer. And he nodded, giving her the same lopsided grin. A toe hold was better than no hold at all she thought. |

The city streets remained as desolate as when they'd first arrived as they followed Alexandria and Gairon through the city and towards the large building that could be seen even from several blocks away. "Sure is lively around here", Vince remarked dryly as they turned a corner and found only more of the same depopulated streets that looked like they hadn't been used in days or possible even weeks. "The people are afraid, their ruler is dead and there's a void in his absence" "Because of the missing heir?" Ranth chimed in thoughtfully. "Is that who you're looking for?" he remembered the innkeepers words about the daughter and only child of the former ruler of Sampaguitown had gone missing shortly after his passing and that several faction were after her- all for nefarious goals. But he knew better than to trust words that had traveled almost a hundred miles on the lips of panicked travelers all fleeing the strife building within this city. "I believe I said I wished to wait until we'd reached a more private arena for discussion", Alexandria replied flatly, giving nothing away. Ranth flicked his eyes around the empty streets and refrained from making a snarky witticism at her expense. Her status aside, she seemed to have the power to render not just his, but all magic useless and that meant he didn't want to get on her bad side. Especially not if she was capable of stopping his magic and not Gairon's at the same time. If nothing else, it could be said that what Ranth lacked in manners he made up for with common sense. So they continued their journey in relative silence until at long last they reached the wrought iron gates of the Sumire estate. It was only now that they saw other living people and although it was in the form of guards stationed around the perimeter of the estate, it was still nice to know that there were other people in this city with them. They were allowed through without hesitation thanks to Alexandria's presence and in short order they crossed the expansive lawn and entered the mansion proper. "Gairon, escort our guests to the board room" Alexandria instructed her right hand before leaving them without a word of explanation. "This way", Gairon said curtly- doing an excellent job of withholding his vehement dislike for the pair (though Ranth in particular garnered an extra scoop of hatred) and led them down a short hallway, up a flight of stairs and then through another set of doors that opened into a large and very lavish room with a thick polished desk large enough to seat over twenty people comfortably. "Lady Sumire will be with you shortly. Wait here until then", he told them sternly before leaving them alone in the room. "Well... looks like we're not the centre of attention for once", Vince remarked once they were alone and seated himself leisurely in one of the luxurious chairs. "But damn, these chairs must have seen some damn fine asses", he chuckled. "I bet the combined worth of everyone who sat in this chair before me is more than Artorius could steal in a lifetime!" A bold claim indeed, but Ranth wasn't interested in the room's past occupants. He only had one goal and he felt like he was being dragged further and further away from where he needed to be to accomplish it. |

All three of the men now stood, or sat, outside the door of the cell. Snow sat back on her heels, looking the epitome of bored as fuck. She sighed, audibly, at least four times before they fully acknowledged her. "What is it?" came three voices at once. Snow quirked an eyebrow. "That should be super obvious. I'm freaking bored. Don't you guys have something we could do? I mean...We've been here for what...A week and a little now? If we dont exercise or do something fun, we might go mad. I don't...Really think..." her voice dropped to a conspiratorial whisper. "That you want to see what happens...when I go a little mad." The fact that all of them looked from one to the next as though she had said something frightening gave her no small measure of satisfaction with the little speech. "And how do we know you won't make an escape attempt? You in particular I mean." Snow shook her head slightly. "You don't. But I can promise I will behave if you let us go get some air and play fucking cards or something...And if you don't...Well. I will still find a way to get some fresh air." She smiled sweetly. Wow it was fun messing with them. "Fine. But no tricks. All of you! UP! IF YOU WANT A MOMENT OUTDOORS, YOU MUST WEAR THESE SHACKLES. AND DO AS WE SAY. ANYONE WHO DISOBEYS, GOES OVER THE TOWER LEDGE." Snow smiled and waited hef turn to be shackled. They made her go first, of course. Easier to keep an eye on her that way, they said. And when they finally had them all grouped together, it was ridiculous to Snow how close these women came to matching her in looks. Some were slightly shorter, some were slightly (weirdly) taller, but they all had the same greyish blue eyes, in varying intensities, and in various shapes and sizes. Their hair was all nearly as long as her own, and their skin as pale. What really made Snow stand out among the bunch was the fact that she was well toned, honed for killing and hunting, where most of them were soft and rounded. Now they made a line, like little duckies she thought. And she made note of how each one walked. This one soft as a whisper, that one heavily on her heels, this one on the balls of her feet which made her steps nearly as soundless as Snow's own. Up the stairs, passed the rooms Snow had left behind in the night. Up still further. At least 7 flights, at least 7 levels, and they passed around 3 doors to the outside world. No one reached for these. Snow could not know that the women behind her were following her lead. Were she to make a move, they would follow. They were all surprised she had gotten them this far. Her only inkling to them mimicking her at all, was that as they went, the steps behind her grew more quiet. One man walked ahead, two trailed behind with spears. And eventually they emerged onto the rooftop of this tower. It was made clear enough that their business here was secret. The women were told to sit. To keep their heads low, and above all, not to approach the battlements, lest they be seen from below. Cards were dealt eventually, and they played at least two dozen hands. It was good, feeling the sun on their faces, though it was shrouded in cloud. Feeling the wind move their hair this way and that, and knowing the world around them had not fallen away as they wilted in their dungeons. After the first few hands, the men went to patrol the battlements. Snow wasted no time whatever conversing with the women, and slipping in hints and clues as to what might be happening later, if only they could manage it. |

It took eleven minutes and thirty six seconds (not that Ranth was counting) of waiting alone in the luxurious board room before the polished oak doors opened to reveal Lady Sumire, Gairon and another man who Ranth hadn't seen before. He was a squeamish looking individual who ahd a distinctly scholarly air to him... by which Ranth meant that he seemed soft of body and sharp of mind and looked like he'd be the first to soil himself if he found himself dropped into even one of Ranth's more mild adventures since coming to Fiore. "You're awfully trusting, leaving us alone in your big expensive mansion", Ranth said with an airy wave of his hand that drew the eye to several paintings hung in golden frames and an ornate series of vases spaced along the wall on either side of the enormous doors. "You're awfully naive in thinking that you'd have been able to leave here of your own free will. Much less with so much as a single chair cushion in your grubby little paws", Alexandria replied without missing a beat. Though curious now as to whether Alexandria's words were a bluff or if there was a genuine method of keeping not one but two high ranking Grimoire Heart mages locked in a seemingly unguarded room, there were other matters to attend to and for once he was willing to put his curiosity aside for the sake of coming even one step closer to tracking down Snow. "Well played, so who's the pen pusher?" Ranth conceded and was satisfied to note the 'pen pusher' turn a little red in the cheeks at being addressed as such. "This is Thomas Wilbury, chief scribe and historian of the Sumire household and former attendant to the late Duke Shervitt before his untimely passing", Alexandria informed them tersely, making it clear that she wasn't in the mood to tolerate Ranth poking fun at the man. Again, Ranth was sorely tempted to push the boundaries and see what he could and couldn't get away with. But again, it was an indulgence he could ill afford and so with a sigh of deep lament, he held his tongue. "So this Duke Shervitt is the father of the girl that everyone's going nuts trying to find?" Vince asked in an almost bored tone that went ignored by the woman across the table as she simply nodded. "Her name is Mokra Shervitt and yes, she's the one we're looking for". Ranth leaned forward in his seat and leaned his chin against his hand as he regarded the trio on the other side of the table with something vaguely resembling contempt. "I've heard that the people looking for this girl are only interested in using her to secure rule of the city. I don't really care either way, but what's your angle in all of this?" Gairon looked like he'd been punched in the gut, Pen Pusher looked like he'd just been threatened at gun point and Alexandria looked... distant. "The other houses are indeed seeking Mokra for their own ends, but for us- for me- it's different", she said quietly. "I grew up with her and she's my closest friend. The hierarchy can rot for all I care, I just want to know that my friend is safe". Whilst she couldn't have known it before she spoke, her reason's for seeking Mokra were much the same as Ranth's were for seeking Snow. Someone they each cared deeply for was missing and in danger. With a hefty sigh, Ranth sat back and shrugged in defeat. "Alright, you've appealed to my better nature", he sighed and earned a smothered chuckle from Vince. "What does this girl look like anyway?" At this, Pen Pusher finally found a reason to exist and he pulled seemingly from nowhere a thick book which he placed down on the table, opened to a seemingly random page with a single colour photo on it and turned it around before pushing it towards Ranth. His eyes scanned the page from bottom to top, first reading the caption 'lady heiress Mokra Shervitt'. Then he got to the picture itself and he swore. Loudly and colorfully, much to everyone's surprise. Edited by Fafnir Rakesh, Apr 17 2015, 06:53 PM.

All too soon their time was up. She was not ready to leave, but she had promised her co-operation, so she gave it. She gave winks to each of the women chained behind her before they made them stand to leave. Spirits had been high for a moment, and now they dropped a little, almost visibly, as they walked back toward their captivity. It was an unhappy feeling which overcame her as well, despite knowing they would find a way out soon enough. She shook it off, looking once more toward the horizon as they left the rooftop, and wondering if anyone at all was out looking for her, or if they simply assumed she was doing her job and still wouldn't be aware of her disappearance at all. Such a depressing thought that lasted all of thirty seconds before Ranth's face swam into her mind. Or course someone was looking for her. So she smirked, and continued down the stairs of the tower as the man in front of her held onto the chain that bound all of them together like little doggies on a walk. She moved at the pace they set for her, and when the time came, they worked from the back part of the line forward when putting them back in their cells. The girl who had refused to talk stood out as they did this. She had been just another person playing cards as they sat on the rooftop. Now however, her bearing stuck out as regal and perhaps a bit noble. Bingo, Snow thought quietly. So they had in fact caught the right woman, and she was too smart to reveal.herself. Not only that, but she bore the most striking resemblance to Snow. Tall like her, almost as toned, though not quite. Whoever she was in the scheme of things, she certainly wasn't a lay about. Snow would have wagered a good bit of money the woman knew how to wield a blade at the very least. Though more than that she wouldn't consider. One other person who could fight would be one hell of an asset already. She wouldn't try reading any further into it. Just before the girl went into her cell though, Snow was given a quiet nod, barely perceptible. And she returned it in kind. Soon enough it was her turn to go back in, and it was Skinny, oddly enough, who attempted to put her back in her cell. He was kind enough at first, as he put her in her cell and instructed her to hold up her hands so he could undo the cuffs. When no one was looking, he tightened the cuffs around her wrists, instead of loosening them, and twisted them until she could feel her skin tearing away. She didn't scream, but she could see the pure malice in his face. This one would be her true enemy, no matter what she said now, because he had been outed by her on day one. She leaned close to the bars as he finally stopped, annoyance plain on his face from her lack of response. He loosened the cuffs to reveal bloodied wrists with perfectly circular injuries ringing them. The other two were coming over, so he made a show of apologizing to her. She smirked. "Oh please. Accidents will happen. Just remember..." she spoke in a quick whisper, so the other two wouldn't hear. "Every drop of my blood you spill, is another nail in your coffin. Marvin." She gave him a wink as the other came over, offering to help bandage her up, and clean the wounds as Sir berated his lesser for such a fuck up. She simply smiled, playing the part of someone nicer than her own self as they bandaged and helped her. The baring of teeth on Marvin's face made her smirk. She had no doubts she would be free of this soon enough. |

Ranth's reaction caused the rest of the room's occupants to start slightly in their chairs to varying degrees. Pen Pusher nearly toppled backwards with a cry of alarm, Gairon looked like he was a hairs breadth from attacking, apparently leaping to the conclusion that Ranth was attacking. Even Vince looked a little startled and had jumped in his sight at his friends exclamation. Of course, Alexandria was the most composed of all of them in the face of Ranth's outburst as she merely raised a questioning eyebrow and awaited an explanation from the archivist. "Is this this supposed to be some kind of joke?" He demanded, his formerly casual demeanor now gone and replaced by one with an icy stare and his words were practically spat across the table as he slid the book across the table to where Vince was sitting and the trio across the table would see a flare of emotion very similar to Ranth's in his one visible eye which he turned on each member of the Sumire clan in turn. "I'm afraid I don't underst-" "DO NOT PATRONISE ME LITTLE GIRL", Ranth roared as he surged to his feet and this time he succeeded in sending Pen Pusher tumbling to the floor as he tried to recoil from Ranth's wrath, whilst Gairon surged to his feet as well and even Alexandria recoiled in shock and a flash of fear showed for a moment as her facade faltered before Ranth's inexpiable fury. "This is the woman we're looking for", Ranth said quietly, his voice dangerous, "and she sure as hell isn't some heiress to a shit kicking backwater place like this", he finished tersely. "Her name is Snow White and if one of you doesn't explain why her picture is in this book right now then we'll find out just how hard it really is to leave this room without your permission", he snarled. Alexandria looked utterly perplexed by this revelation and exchanged a glance with Gairon that went far from unnoticed by Ranth as an eerie calm swept through him to replace the burning anger that had blazed brightly within him a moment ago. "You know something." It was at once a statement of fact, a question and a threat and only now was Alexandria realising that the man sitting across the table from her was far more dangerous than she'd given him credit for. In light of this realisation, she realised that there was far more to lose by provoking than she did by confiding in him. "We've been investigating reports that suggest that a lot of women have gone missing in and around Sampaguitown", Gairon explained, taking his unspoken cue from Alexandria that he should speak. "That's awfully generous of you, but I doubt you're doing it out of the goodness of your hearts. Why the interest?" Ranth asked dryly. "We're interested because all of the reported missing women bear striking resemblence to Mokra Shervitt and, apparently, to your acquaintance as well", Alexandria answered quietly. Slowly the pieces were beginning to fall into place... Edited by Fafnir Rakesh, Apr 17 2015, 08:33 PM.

Snow's wrists were no heavily bandaged, and she was sitting in her cell staring at a wall for no apparent reason. She was bored. She had gathered all the information she could possibly need out of the three men. They had no allies. They were alone in this tower. No guards would stop them at the gates. Darius had the only set of keys to both the cells and the outside doors. Sir was a heavy sleeper. And skinny was an asshat. It would take weeks for her to heal properly from this. And it would likely leave at least a faint scar without magical treatment. Possibly even with. He had twisted hard enough for the smooth metal to cut her fairly deeply. Now she was moving experimentally, making sure she had full range of motion, and that she would still be able to lift a sword, and weild, if needed. She doubted very much that she would be able to do more than make a decent show of it. That was her first throught. She winced several times, as she came to the halfway point in the rotation, she could feel a deeper wound just on the side of her wrist where the delicate bone stuck out. She sighed eventually, not speaking for a while as she lay back on her cot and trying to ignore the sounds around her. At this point she was beyond annoyed. She was pissed. And she needed out of this stupid dank hole. She would happily free the others, and then come back later to take out these assholes. That was the plan anyway. If she could get them out tonight, and through Dandelion (the tower itself was on the edge of the city, so they could probably work that out in short order,) and find their way to where they were meant to be, it would all be fine. If the others pursued them? Well, it would be much different fighting her on her own terms than picking at someone in handcuffs. So a part of her hoped they would come for her. And another part hoped they would stay asleep. In the end, it was made easy for her, in a most unexpected manner. Though of course she should have been expecting it. After that little show of anger this afternoon, it should have been no surprise when Skinny decided he was going to try to do something stupid. But she was always being surprised by stupidity. She had been on the verge of sleep when she heard him coming down the stairs. She thought little of it until there was a slight jingle of keys, and Darius' footsteps were wholly absent. Sir was sleeping soundly, apparently dead to the world for the most part. Snow grabbed a loose rock that was beneath her cot, placing it under her pillow in case things got tricky. If he tried to hurt anyone, she would be making it a point to get out as fast as she could and hurt him back. But as she lay there, eyes shut, and one hand clutching the stone beneath her pillow, she could tell that he was making a quiet beeline for her cell. The others slept, so no warning came. Instead, she heard the cell door creak open, and then he wkas standing by her bed and she smelled cold steel. It happened quickly. He started downwards to strike with a tiny dagger, and she surged up with her heavy rock, nailing him in the middle of his forehead. He went down like...well...a sinking stone. She caught the dagger before it clattered to the floor, and stuck it in the side of her pants to make sure it wouldn't be going anywhere. It took little time, but lots of effort, to elevate the now unconscious man to her cot, (unconscious, not dead, just so we're all clear.) She covered him up and took the keys, making her way oh so softly out of the cell, and opening doors with preternatural silence. She woke her fellow captives one by one, and mimed they needed to be silent. Doors were shut behind them. And they oh so carefully began to creep toward freedom. |

Ranth closed his eyes and exhaled slowly and deeply whilst resting his forehead against his knuckles following this latest revelation. The puzzle pieces which had been accumulating over the better part of the last 12 hours were now falling into place in rapid succession to form a picture that he was coming up with. Snow sent to quell the growing unrest in Sampaguitown... The Shervitt heir going missing and adding fuel to the fire... Snow going missing before she could make contact with her designated contact... Snow and the Shervitt heir sharing an uncanny likeness... Reports of women that also shared their likeness being abducted... He groaned as he opened his eyes and let his hands fall down in front of him as he lifted his head and regarded the Sumire's with a weary expression. "What do you know about these disappearances? Who's behind them? Where can we find them? Please tell me you have at least some useful information about this", he said. Gairon's eyes twitched with irritation, but Alexandra calmed him with a raised hand. "Unfortunately, we don't know which faction is behind it or what their specific goal is. We've heard no ransom demands or threats so we're rather at a loss as to what they're waiting for since Mokra has been missing for almost a week now and so we can only assume the worst", Alexandra said, her eyes downcast and her teeth digging into her lower lip. "Has it ocurred to you...", Vince said slowly, "that the reason you haven't heard any demands from these supposed kidnappers... is because they don't know if they've got the girl they're looking for?" Alexandria blinked in obvious confusion, her head tilted to one side in an unspoken request for further elaboration. Which Ranth was more than happy to provide. "Think about it. Why would they go to the trouble of abducting so many lookalikes? It suggests to me that they spread a wide net without knowing what they'd catch. Even if they were just trying to find a doppelganger for some reason, there would be no need to take so many women and risk drawing attention to themselves", Ranth surmised and Alexandria's eyes widened as she saw the logic in what they were saying. "All this time we've been assuming that one of the other houses had her and would use her as leverage to gain power within the city... but if a party that was separate from all the houses and simply wanted to sell her to the highest bidder..." "Then there's no way that they'd base their operations within Sampaguitown. Too many eyes and ears", Vince finished for her. "So if you were trying to hide a sizable group of women without raising undue suspicion... where would you go?" Ranth asked Alxandria across steeped fingers. |
