Supper it seemed, was in the form of a stew. But their captors gave them no spoons. Only hunks of bread and giant bowls filled to the brim. It was an annoyance. But Snow shrugged mentally. There would be other opportunities. She just needed to wait. She feigned waking suddenly, and drew the attention of the skinny one. "Ah another sleeping beauty arises. Good morning my dear. Now, don't be afraid. Just be aware that you will be kept here until we can ransome you. All you need do is give us a name." Snow smiled at him. "You first." Her cellmates hadn't been so brazen, so it took the man a moment to realize she had even backtalked. But when he did, his eyebrow (thin and obviously vigorously manicured) shot halfway up his forehead in surprise. "Oh that won't do at all. I'm afraid I need your name. Not the other way around. We took quite a little arsenal off of you as I recall. So, I'm sure you understand why I cannot give my name." She raised a brow. Some part of her wondered if she might ever actually be able to not be a smartass in these situations. Ranth was a bad influence perhaps. "Yes well, I'm sure you'll understand that I didn't have those weapons for more than show. My father being who he is, he said it was imperative I carry them for safety reasons. So I did." Oh that was quite the look on his face. He felt that this might indeed be his prize. And she had yet to come up with a suitable pseudonym. She was hoping very much they might let slip in the near future who they searched for. It would make this game so much simpler. "He also said, not to give my name away to strangers. There's power in names you know. So it would have to be like for like, quip pro quo, as it were, if I were to share anything. I'm sure you see my point here." The man seemed to think while all the other women in their cells had gone quiet. Snow had only sat up,and was swinging her long legs back and forth as if in boredom. "Erm. Very well. I am Marvin. At your service." Snow stared at him, cocking her head to one side. He was lying through his teeth. That had been a simple thing to tell by the way he looked up and to the right when he said it. Eye contact was such an important thing sometimes. Especially when lying. "You're lying I think. I don't think I shall give tou my name after all." He raised his head (it had been bowed slightly,as if in courtesy) eith a quick jerk,a frown on his face. "Then perhaps you don't want supper?" She shook her head and yawned. "I'm not hungry. A girl needs to watch her figure you know." He seemed surprised again. People apparently cowed to him often. Not her habit. "Perhaps I shall fetch my associate? He is much more persuasive than I. Though he uses his fists more than his words. I would imagine a girl who worries about her figure would worry about her face being disfigured?" She laughed. "I think...You misjudge me on several accounts. But by all means, call your associate. I think a ransom is generally less if the subject is broken, don't you?" A growl of frustration. Then he marched away. Snow lay back on her cot. She was starving to be fair. But a little fasting wouldn't hurt her. And she needed time. Just more time. |

The woman looked at him blankly for a moment, unable to fathom that someone might not have heard about what was going on. Certainly not someone who was on their way there. From her point of view, she was looking at a boy naive young man who was so helplessly naive that the place where he was going would chew him up and spit him out. So of course it was her motherly duty to warn him and, if possible, dissuade him from going at all in the first place. It's what she'd want for her children if they ever faced similar circumstances and she believed that good karma beget good karma. "Oh my dear, you really haven't heard? There's something of a succession war going on in the province that Sampaguitown governs. The former Mayor took sickly and Sampaguitown is a place steeped in tradition that means that the next Mayor is meant to come from blood rather than the general populace. But the Mayor's only heir went missing and many suspect foul play at work by the faction that's pushing for a Mayor to be chosen from amongst the people". It was, Ranth had to admit, an intriguing story and although he didn't say it out loud, he wasn't sure how anyone thought that having 'mini governments' under the umbrella of a monarchy was a good idea. "So basically... everyone trying to find this heir and depending on which side finds him wins?" Ranth asked curiously. But the woman shook her head vehemently. "The heir is a girl and the Mayor has been a man for over 6 generations. The loyalists will likely want her as a figurehead and the independents will want her to abolish 6 generations of tradition. Either way, the poor girl loses and from what I'm told she's not even past her teens yet. I really do pity her", the woman said with a sad shake of her head. Interesting as the tale was, Ranth cared little for the details that he for now deemed irrelevant. In time he'd be very thankful to the woman for sharing this idle gossip, but right now he was hungry and after a quick exchange of coins, Ranth had secured a room and sat down at one of the empty table sin the room while two hot meals were prepared along with a complimentary tankard of ale. The woman truly was a generous soul, but no amount of motherly love and kindness could keep him from reaching his destination. As he sipped his ale and waited to see who would win the race to his table between Vince and their dinner, he pondered what complication might have befallen Snow on her journey to Sampaguitown. Reports of abductions and kidnappings were few and far between in these parts, as it was inhabited mostly by simple country folk with small means to pay ransom or even be worth stealing and ransacking. It was one of the poorer area's of Fiore, but interestingly the people who lived here seemed no less content. Had she come across someone in need and simply been waylaid from her original objective? It was unlikely but not impossible. Though he felt that her sense of duty to the guild would have trumped that of a random stranger. Hopefully he'd learn more come the morrow. If not, he'd tear down the entire city and all of its petty politics brick by brick until he did. Of course, he stayed well away from the darker, more pessimistic alternative fates Snow may have encountered. Ones that didn't bear considering until all other avenues had been exhausted and perhaps not even then. |

The footsteps headed ever upward were more or less angry. She could easily live with that. She moved again when they went out of hearing distance, back toward the bars. "Everyone okay?" Murmurs of assent. "Sorry for the show. Just buying time. Does anyone have anything, like maybe a hair pin, close by?" She stuck her arm out to indicate where she was. She seemed to have landed slap in the center of a semi-circle of cells, making sight close by limited for her, but less so for everyone else. There was the rustling of people searching. At last every one seemed to go quiet, perhaps waiting on someone else to say they had something helpful. But of course, that wasn't the case. "Its fine. I will figure out something. Just wait. Be patient. Its all we can do at this point." She sat back again, examining her cell. There was very little in the way of furnishings. A cot, attached to the wall by iron bars and chains on each end. The links were too large to work as a lock pick, so that was out. They had working toilets at least, but that didn't give her many more options. Not unless she dismantled the damn thing. Which, while it wasn't unlikely, was hardly the first course she wished to take. Water on the floor where there had been none would be easily noted, especially in torchligt. And it wasn't as if she could pretend she had been working on it. The girl these men were looking for was likely highborn. One didn't end up kidnapped for being poor and good with one's hands usually. Usually. One didn't kidnap a mage associated with the most powerful dark guild in Fiore either. But there were exceptions. Extremely stupid exceptions, she supposed. But exceptions all the same. She needed to think. She needed time to explore. And see what sorts of tools might be handy if she could only have the time, she felt certain she would find something. Bit time was a luxury, and one they weren't afforded. She could hear the footsteps again and she hissed a warning to the others as she resumed her nonchalant pose in her cot. She could hear scrambling feet again. Some of the girls, it seemed, had yet to be identified at all. Which was likely a good thing. If one of them were the girl the men needed, it was unlikely they would keep around the rest for long. This time Darius approached with 'Marvin.' And Snow smiled at both of them. "This is my erm..associate. Are you certain you won't just be a sweetie and give us your name?" Snow cringed inwardly. Yuck. Who the hell had ever accused her of being sweet? A resounding no one. Ever. "You give me your name, I give you mine. That's the deal, right?" She was going to die of smartassery one day. Hopefully not today. But one day. "I MAKE THE RULES HERE NOT YOU! YOU'RE JUST FODDER! DO YOU HEAR ME YOU STUPID BITCH?" Snow simply smiled a bit more widely, and quirked an eyebrow. "Tsk tsk. Your persona is slipping." The skinny man took a step back. He had been closer to the bars, but not close enough for her to reach him. This time. He took several deep breaths, drawing in air and making his face, which had turned purple, turn back pale except for a slight flush of color on his cheeks. "Are you who we seek or not. Just answer the damn question." The big man stepped up now, meaty fist slapping into a meaty palm. "Depends. Who are you looking for?" The big man roared in rage. There was a quick side discussion which involved them opening the cell door and trying to beat the hell out of her for her impudence. It was difficult not to scoff. But the plan quickly changed to them starving her out. Her comment about broken merchandise may have stuck. For now. "Fine. Have it your way and keep your silence. You won't eat until you break it. And you might want to curb that smart tone of yours. Elsewise, I may stop giving a damn about broken faces and slightly lowered prices." with that he turned on his heal, big man in tow, and headed back up the stairs. Interesting. It had been very interesting indeed, she thought with a slight smirk. |

In the end, Vince won the race to the table- though only by a narrow margin and in typical Vince fashion, he gave an extravagant bow and a wink (or it might have just been a blink considering the eye patch and all) to the woman running the place and then joined Ranth at the table. "Hey, where's my drink?" he asked in protest as he took in the scene of Ranth drinking from his mug and there being no other mug anywhere in sight. "tending the horses is thirty work man, I feel undervalued and unnapreciated and-" "It was free, I didn't order it", Ranth's exasperated voice cut into Vince's tirade, leaving the man with his mouth open. which he promptly shut. "Oh. Never mind then". "Anyway, I was talking to the owner and I found out some interesting background regarding the situation in Sampaguitown. Apparently there's quite a story behind the cause of this unrest", Ranth began but was interrupted by the arrival of their food and Ranth thanked the serving girl while Vince took the opportunity to order a drink of his own. "Well don't leave me in suspense, what did you hear?" Vince prompted him once they were alone again. Taking a bite of his steak, Ranth deliberately waited until he finished mouthful to continue what he'd been saying. Vince was terrible when it came to suspense after all. "Apparently it's a little more complicated than just 'civil unrest' and there's actually something akin to a succession war going on in Sampaguitown. The ruling house has lost their leader and the only viable heir has gone missing. The main problem however is that there's another faction that wants to see this dynasty system put to rest and allow the people to choose their own leader. Neither side seems to know where the heir is and they both have their own less than honest purposes for her". He took another mouthful of food and washed it down with a mouthful of ale as Vince digested this news. When Vince finally did speak, it wasn't to say what Ranth might have expected and it was spoken with a sly grin. "Well, well, well... if I didn't know any better I'd say you felt a little concerned for this mystery heir", Vince poked him across the table and earned a thunderous glare in response. "Hardly", Ranth replied with undisguised derisiveness. He didn't give a rat ass about the problems of what he considered to be a backwater city like Sampaguitown. "Do you think it might have any bearing on Snow's disappearance?" Vince asked, his voice serious this time. But Ranth could only shrug and exhale wearily. "I have no idea. But I guess we'll know more when we get there". It wasn't what either of them wanted to admit, but there was no helping it. The reality of a missing person was that the trail would go dead quickly and they had no idea at what point during the intervening 6 days since Snow's last known sighting she'd been waylaid. They didn't know if she was alive or dead, held prisoner or roaming free. In short, they knew nothing and their only clue was that she'd been headed to Sampaguitown. If they couldn't find clues there then they were well and truly behind the eight ball that much was certain. |

It was difficult to tell how time was passing in a sunless cell. Her best indication that their captors might be sleeping was the fact that it was suddenly silent upstairs. It seemed they had no intentions of coming back down, which indicated they might be sleeping. But they might be having their own dinner as well. It was a difficult thing, and Snow was afraid to do much in the way of risking it. She could risk her own life without worry, but she wouldn't be able to do so for the other people in their cells. That would be wrong, and selfish, and wasn't within her capacity. Balance in all things. She sighed again after a bit. She could sleep. But she felt like she had been doing too much of that. She was restless, and had no where to go, so she paced. They had taken her boots, but left her stockings. So she kept pacing, the cold of the stone beneath her feet enough to ground her as she attempted to think this through. It was obvious they didn't have who they wanted (yet and that they knew of.) She had lied about having a father, and that had been enough to make them wonder. Snow chewed on the inside of her cheek as she paced. She had never been good at being still. Now she looked like nothing so much as a caged beast, pacing it's holding pin in the zoo. Which was more or less correct all things considered. It was this pacing which actually gave her what she needed. She stepped on something sharp, and found, to her utter surprise and delight a small piece of twisted metal lodged in the stones. It was buried though, and she would have to work at it to make it come out, but she had time. And she would set to work immediately, if discreetly, while thanking the goddess for small favors. "Miss? Miss why won't you say your name?" The question came out of nowhere and Snow looked up and around as if the speaker might be standing there. "I ...Don't trust them. I think if I tell them the wrong name, they will soon find themselves out of options. And if I tell them my real name, well, I fear for all of you if I do that." She didn't really want to expound. But a GH mage for ransom would seem like a boon to men as foolish as these. And there was that utterly satisfying picture of Ranth, not her white knight come to her rescue by any means, but more like an avenging angel which made her grin. But she couldn't rely on that. She wouldn't just sit and wait and hope he came to her rescue. Nor should he expect her to. So she dug at the little spike, her chance at picking a lock, and getting out of this fucking cell and to her weapons, and she hoped she could do it quickly. It was unfortunate that her second guess about the time had been more spot on. Soon their captors were back. As she heard them approach she lay down just in front of it and began doing sit-ups. It was something. And it might hide it long enough for her to extract the damn thing herself. But of course, these two were chatty Cathys. They wanted to talk some more. And she found herself rolling her eyes as they took a seat, each of them, a safe distance from her cell door. |

"So level with me Ranth", Vince said quietly as they finished their dinner and found themselves alone save for the kitchen staff that were cleaning up after a long day of serving customers. "I know you care for Snow, but I want to hear it from your own mouth", he prodded with a grin. "I like to think of it as the mark of a man who's not afraid to share his feelings with the world", he added with a wink that was obviously a wink despite the eye patch he wore. But if he thought he had Ranth cornered, he was in for a rude awakening as Ranth eyed him calmly for a moment and then turned the tables on him completely with three words and one raised eyebrow. "What about Sophia?" The fact that Ranth had struck a telling blow was evidenced by the way Vince sat back in his chair, his lips pressed together in a thin, defiant line and his uncovered eye glared at Ranth like he'd just been caught stealing and it was somehow Ranth's fault for catching him rather than his for stealing in the first place. he opened his mouth, no doubt to protest but Ranth beat him to the punch. "Don't bother denying it, I see the way you look at her and unlike you, I don't annoy you about it. But if you thought I hadn't noticed them you've seriously underestimated these eyes of mine", Ranth said flatly and Vince sighed in defeat as he realised that he'd just been beaten at his own game. "Alright fine, well played. I'll shut up about it", Vince muttered bitterly and averted his gaze from his friend as he finished his mug of ale. "But with your feelings for Sophia in mind... I'm sure you don't need me to say it to know that I don't care what the guild tells me. I have my priorities and I'll see them through to the end no matter what", Ranth added and Vince's eyes snapped to Ranth's and he put down the mug with a huge grin, as though he'd just been given the best Christmas present ever through the roundabout confession. "Aye, I'm with you to the end man. I'd be disappointed if you said any different... only a robot would put the mission before the girl", he chuckled and earned a wry smile from Ranth. "By the way..." "Your secrets safe with me. I won't dob you in to Sophia", Ranth sighed and Vince's eyes shone with relief. "Now let's get some rest. I'm dragging you out of bed at first light even if it killed you", Ranth announced and stood up, followed closely by Vince as they made their way up to their assigned room where they were soon fast asleep. Though Ranth remained awake a little longer than Vince to spare a thought for Snow and wish fervently that the coming dawn would find her safe and sound. "Have you decided you want your supper yet?" The man was back to being cool and calm. She smirked again. She wouldn't give a name. If she did, ever, it would not be her own. The last thing she needed was this getting back to the guild. What sort of capable almost-C-Rank mage would get kidnapped so easily? That and she couldn't let herself get 'released' without taking her friends with her. Loosely used term. Fellow captives? Better. And the guild, while it would send out a multitude of people to help her, would be less interested in the safety of people who weren't her. Besides, she had left behind an incomplete mission. That was going to be an annoying mark on her record. And she only hoped it would be expunged due to extenuating circumstances. In the mean time..."I am not that hungry. Thank you just the same." Oh how fun it was to change her personality only slightly and watch the men before her become confused and befuddled. It wasn't as if being polite were difficult, and she often made a practice of it without meaning to. Habits. They die hard. Sometimes with a vengeance. But in this case it worked as a psychological game as well. They expected haughty and entitled. She gave them something different, which threw them off to some extent. They looked askance at one another. Even the big one had noted her change of demeanor. Good for him, she thought sarcastically. It was about time one of them started actually using the modicum of brains somewhere between them. But the smile stayed plastered on her face. "Well now...that is quite the...Nice attitude. Please and thank you are always welcome. I wonder if I wasn't a bit harsh with you earlier?" Snow smiled more broadly. "No, not at all. You're within in your bounds to withhold things. And I am within mine to withhold information, I believe." The tone was still ridiculously sweet, but the men got the message anyway. "Well then, I suppose we will simply leave you for the evening, since you seem completely unwilling to co-operate. And who knows? Perhaps your name isn't the one we seek, but that of one of the other sleeping beauties lying on their cots. In any case, no supper. But do enjoy your night. And erm... keep your feet up. There tend to be large rats in places like this at night. And there will be no lights." The torches were taken from their wall brackets, and several of the women nearby made sounds of protest at the sudden and complete darkness around them. Snow kept at her former work once the men had departed. The utter darkness of being underground prevented even her heightened senses from helping her see. But she could still touch, and feel where she was digging at. Now she had all night to get this bugger out of the ground. And she would. If it killed her, she would. |

Ranth awoke from a dreamless sleep to find the grey light of predawn greeting him through the window. Only the heartiest of birds were warming up their songs that would give life and color to the rest of the day. For a moment, he wanted nothing more than to roll over and claim the extra hour or two of potential sleeping time before the sun rose in all its fiery glory, but then he remembered what had brought him to be this cramped, flea ridden bed in the first place. Snow. So with a groan, he sat up and threw back the covers and rose to his feet. Vince was sound asleep on the other side of the room on a bed that was a mirror image of his own and Ranth waste no time in rousing him with a bombardment of the man's personal effects that woke him with a series of drowsy protests as his hands flailed about blindly in a vain attempt to fend of the incoming projectiles, but it was a lost cause and he was left with no choice but to wake up under Ranth's onslaught of shoes and other articles of clothing found within his luggage. "Alright, alright, I'm awake! Cease fire!"Vince groaned groggily as he sat up and rubbed the sleep out of his eyes. "What did I do to deserve such inhuman treatment anyway?" Vince was, if it wasn't obvious, not a morning person and he looked like something akin to a zombie as he dragged his corpse out of bed and began shambling around in search of the things he needed in order to resume being a fully functioning member of the human race. Twenty minutes later they were dressed, showered and saddling their faithful steeds for another hard day- well, half day anyway- of riding in order to reach their destination. Ranth didn't even consider the possibility of running into Snow on the road, so his eyes and thoughts were all turned to Sampaguitown where he could only hope that he'd find the answers he sought or better yet, the woman of the hour herself. "Alright, lets giddy up", Vince hooted enthusiastically as they made their way out of the town at a respectably safe pace. "Never say that again or they'll never find the body", Ranth grimaced, but only earned more laughter from his companion who delighted in embarrassing and generally causing discomfort for his friend and with that they cleared the gate and burst into twin gallops towards their destination. All too soon they'd reach Sampaguitown and then they'd set about getting to the bottom of this. |

While Ranth slept, Snow was busy. Digging at a little piece of metal which would (hopefully) gain her her freedom. Problem being, she had spent so much time digging at it in the utter darkness, she couldn't quite see the mess she was making. She did, eventually, free the shining possible makeshift key from its home in the earth. And had just enough time to put it down the front of her corset as she heard footsteps and saw light coming down the stairs. She had to act quickly, and moved as much of her mess as she could back into place, hoping the moron twins (as she bad dubbed them sometime in the night) weren't morning people, or hadn't had coffee, or even better, just weren't that observant. It was pure luck the earth she had been scraping at was nothing more than a bit of soft silky dust through her fingers, so a quick clap of her hands dislodged the majority of it. She climbed into her cot and turned her back on the people headed toward them, throwing a blanket to the floor just so she could further hide evidence of her wrong doing. She listened with closed lids as the two men went about their business in the room, lighting torches and what not. The smell of breakfast wafted into the cell and she was actually growing ridiculously hungry by the time they started waking people up. Apparently it was going to be a shit day, full of interviews, and annoyance for those of them that hadn't talked yet. So when something slammed against her cell door, rattling it with a loud metallic clang, she sat up as though startled from a sound sleep. The bastards could have allowed them that at least. "RISE AND SHINE LADIES. WE NEED TO TALK." Several more of the women were soon talked into revealing their names. None of which seemed to fit, as could be seen by the growing agitation on the faces of skinny and blobby. Now they moved slightly our of sight, apparently Snow's face leaving them less than enthused to approach her this morning. She was surprised, therefore, to hear them speaking to a girl she hadn't heard before. Her voice was exceptionally soft. Held so even when their captors began harassing her. She wasn't giving her name, she said. It was soft yes, but Snow could respect the steel behind it. It was unfortunate, therefore, when their captors moved away from that cell and came at last to stand before her. The didn't want to bully her on, what was, the first day of questioning for her. Snow, however, had garnered the brunt of their anger, simply by being difficult the day before. Now skinny looked straight at her, and she could see some small measure of anger and perhaps even desperation behind those eyes. Something had changed. Something had gone wrong. And with a mental sigh, Snow realized they were going to take it out on her. She wondered just how hard she could punch, sleep deprived and basically starved for a full week at this point. Not to mention the fact dehydration would soon be setting in. With any luck, it would be just hard enough. But her luck had never run that way. Why should it start doing so now? |

It had taken them most of the morning, but an hour or two shy of noon, Ranth and Vince crested a rise that gave them their first glimpse of Sampaguitown below. "It doesn't look so bad from here", Vince chimed in as he pulled up next to where Ranth had stopped. "Isn't that what the women say about you?" Ranth remarked with a raised eyebrow before nudging his horse forward once more. "Ouch man, that really hurts y'know!" Vince whined, placing one hand against his heart to show just hos much it had hurt and where before realising that he was being left behind and rolled his eyes as he followed in his guild mates footsteps. "Sometimes you're no fun at all", he mumbled. The final stretch of road that led to Sampaguitown was in almost as well kept a state as the highway that they'd left Acacia from the day before, but for the first time in their journey they found that not only did they share the road, but it was crowded. Very crowded in fact. However, this would prove to be no obstacle for the pair as the road had been divided in half several hundred metres from the main gates and a large contingent of local law enforcement had erected a checkpoint of sorts through which Ranth noted lots of people leaving the city and literally nobody going in. "Well this doesn't look ominous at all", Vince whistled quietly as they approached the checkpoint and were spotted by a rather surprised looking official who must have been place din charge of arrivals and so far, probably hadn't had to do very much of anything since being assigned this particular duty. After all, who in their right mind would want to voluntarily enter a city that was on the verge of a full fledged riot. It might not even have been a stretch to say that a civil war would be a more apt description. "Uh... State your business travelers!" The man said loudly, though still clearly perplexed before coming closer and adding in a much quieter voice so as not to be overheard, "I don't know if you know, but Sampaguitown is no place for travelers right now. I cannot urge you strongly enough to turn around and go back to wherever you came from. For your own good". Well, it seemed that the situation was every bit as dire as they'd heard and Ranth exchanged a quick glance with Vince before smiling at the officer. "Unfortunately, we must get inside. Our mother isn't well and our father isn't coping well at all. No matter what, we can't abandon them when they need us the most", he explained. Every single word of what he'd just said, of course, a complete and utter load of bullshit."Well... as I said, it's not my job to stop you coming in, but you'll find it much harder to get out than it was to get in. But if you've made up your minds then go on ahead. God speed gentlemen". |
