Returning to the reality of a life in the guild had given Snow only one or two fits since she had returned. Which wasn't much. Still, she had somehow managed to get a cold after her last mission in the city of Crocus which was conducted entirely in the rain. So now when she went to the desk, and was handed some sort of missive, she looked paler than usual, and she couldn't breathe properly. But this was yet another "To be done quickly and concisely for the glory of the guild." Spring weather wasn't agreeing with her, but this was a job, and she had to take it. So she went uptairs, and got dressed, and took medicine. It was to take place in Sampaguitown, a place she had not been before, but she knew it by reputation. So it was not much of a surprise when she took her usual precautions as far as armor and weapons went before going out. It was meant to be a place that was simple and quiet, but that was never the case when one was sent on guild business. She had stopped by to see Ranth, showing him the mission breifing, telling him bye. No big deal. That was the plan. For all of it to be no big deal. Of course, she wouldn't know that she wouldn't quite make it that far. How could she? She had been close to the place she was meant to go, her mind wandering when it happened. It was dusk. And a cloth was held over her nose and mouth as she attempted to fight whoever was holding her. She wasn't exactly the regular person go be kidnapped after all. She could fight back. But whatever was on this cloth seeped into her mouth, into her pores, and she soon felt the magical energy draining from her limbs, as though she had used her magic at full capacity all at once. She fell into a deep sleep. When she woke, she was in a small room, bars on the windows, stone surrounding her. Before her was a typical prison door, iron bars and tiny slats through which she could see flickering torch light and hear soft voices. Her first thoughts on waking, besides having the sense to keep her eyes half closed and her breathing even, was that the place stunk, and she was likely in deep shit. She didn't sigh outwardly, but she was irritated with herself for being caught out this way. She didn't know she had slept, on and off, for nearly a full week. So she couldn't know that people would soon take note of her going missing. Instead, she assumed, as in so many other situations, that she was on her own. And she needed to think. Carefully. Not her forte. |

"So Ranth, how are things with Snow if you know what I'm saying? I haven't seen her around for a while, did she get sick of you and run away?" Ranth looked up wearily from the book he'd been reading to find his friend and guildmate Vince leaning against the door to his room grinning like a mischievous teenager who was asking who his friend had a crush on in their class. "Why is it that even though I don't pry into your love life, you feel the need to pry into mine... daily?". He asked with no small amount of exasperation as he snapped his book shut- knowing that he wouldn't get a chance to look at it again for quite some time. "Well it's just funny to see you in any kind of relationship with... well... you know... a woman", Vince shrugged, not at all worried that this might have been taken as an insult against his friend's manhood. "Ha. Ha. Raven Tail called, they want their clown back", Ranth muttered as he set the book aside and stood up to stretch his arms above his head. "If you must know, Snow's away on a mission. She'll probably be back in another day or two", Ranth relented and let the information slip if only to get Vince out of his hair. "Oh, was that the mission to Sampaguitown to put down that riot?" Vince asked brightly and Ranth realised with a pang of dread that this conversation wasn't over. "Yes, that's the one", he groaned. "I'm surprised it's taken her so long, I mean... it's Sampaguitown for goodness sake", Vince noted with surprise. "Well, you know what she's like. Probably trying to settle the dispute with a game of chess or something", Ranth shrugged nonchalantly. Though in truth, he had wondered about the amount of time that such a seemingly simple assignment was taking the woman. Even allowing for Snow's preference for non-violent solutions, he was certain she'd have been back yesterday or today at the latest. Of course there was no rule that said you had to return to the guild immediately after completing a mission... she might have stopped to do some shopping or something on the way back... that would account for an extra day or two... probably... maybe... But Ranth knew Snow better than that. She'd return as soon as she could, clearly there'd just been some sort of complication in Sampaguitown. Nothing to worry about. But at that very moment, a man that Ranth recognised as one of the officers in charge of he distribution of missions stepped into the room, ushering Vince out of the way as he went and he fixed them both with a steely gaze that told Ranth what he was about to say before he even said it and his heart sank. "Gentlemen, I'm afraid I have some bad news..." Edited by Fafnir Rakesh, Apr 5 2015, 10:40 PM.

Snow lay quietly, waiting on her senses to return to full capacity. One could tell a lot just by listening. She was tired still, her muscles heavier than usual. She simply lay quite still, feeling the hard cot beneath her, and listening to the dripping of the water in the cell, and wondering just why there were no guards close by. It seemed like a lapse in their judgement in her opinion. She may not have had Ranth-esque strength, but she was no mewling infant in terms of capability either. As she listened though, she began to pick up on other noises. Things like soft breathing which indicated she wasn't fully alone in this dank place. She opened her eyes to slits again, though she was careful to keep her breathing the same. The place was lit with flickering torchlight. And while the smell of water permeated the place, her own cell was completely dry, and completey surrounded by stone walls on three sides. The "windows" were just airless slits in the walls, though covered by bars. This perhaps meant this place had once had a view of the out side world. Which meant she might well be inside a sunken ruin of some sort. The steady breathing around her was growing louder. But above, as she could see there was an above thanks to the staircase nearly perfectly across from her cell door, there was the slightest hint of voices filtering down to her ears. Noises people who weren't her probably wouldn't have noted ever. She listened, straining hard to block out the ambient noises in the room itself to catch thw words that accompanied the sounds. It was for naught though, as she could make out only pitch, and tone. They sounded male, and confused, and angry. But the words themselves eluded her. She would assume, and rightly, that these people were her captors. She wondered if she could play dead and find her way out of this mess with enough concentration and stillness. Probably not her best plan truth be told. She was tired again, but straining against that as well. She needed to be awake and alert. She needed to investigate her surroundings, see if she could find her way out of here easily. She swung her legs carefully off the side of the cot, fully opening her eyes at last. The bright light of the torches gave her an instant headache. Not only that but the feeling in her muscles made her realize at last that she had likely been sleeping for days, as opposed to a single night. It was the sort of thing one experienced after drugging. And she remembered now too that she had been drugged. She wasn't bodily hurt though, only annoyed by her lack of focus. She moved slowly, carefully, and as quietly as possible toward the cell door. One could always hold out hope for stupid jailers. She had no such luck, as a firm push on the bars of the door showed that, while they might look aged and ready to fall in, they were in fact well maintained. She sighed. At this small sound from her someone else spoke softly into the room at large. "Is..someone there?" It was a small feminine whisper. But Snow couldn't quite trust anything in here. And as soon as the woman spoke, footsteps sounded on the stairs. They were loud, and echoed, and were hurried. Snow scuttled back to her cot, and was surprised to hear similar sounds coming from several directions around her. She resumed her steady breathing, and noted it was done to varying degrees of success by whoever else was trapped down here with her. There seemed to be only one who didn't quite make it, and she could hear the sickening sound of an ankle twisting as it slid over an uneven stone. There was no time for this person to cover their mistake. Instead, a new voice spoke. "You! You're awake! Tell me your name girl, and quickly!" |

The officer closed the door behind him, apparently not wishing to be overheard or disturbed with what he was about to say. He held a folder of recently compiled documents which he lay down on Ranth's desk before turning to the pair with solemn eyes. "As you probably know, we recently dispatched Snow White to Sampaguitown to deal with civil unrest that was threatening to break out and undermine our interests there. That was six days ago. This morning, we received word that Snow White... never made contact with our agent in Sampaguitown. In other words... she never reached her destination". Vince cast a worried look in Ranth's direction, realising that this would be distressing news for the archivist. But if Ranth was concerned, he betrayed no outward indication of it. I fact, Ranth's first instinct had been to clench his fists and scowl before demanding to be sent after her. But he also knew that to be childish and thoughtless. The officer had come to him with this information, which meant he was most likely planning on sending Ranth to investigate regardless of what he did or said. "Do we have any idea what might have happened?" He asked calmly and noted the look of approval in the officer's eyes at his calm, collected demeanor. Ranth was one of the guilds rising stars and Ranth in particular was known for his analytic approach to situations that others would lose their cool over. Just because this was a personal matter didn't mean he'd be any different, but he'd be lying if he said part of him wasn't seething at the thought of Snow coming to harm. He knew she was capable of looking after herself, but by the same token he also knew that there were plenty of people out there that she couldn't hope to overcome on her own. "Unfortunately, we don't have anything concrete to on", the officer shook his head sadly. "Beyond the possibility of bandits or brigands, there's no other clue that we've been able to gather without going there in person. "Which is what you want us to do?" Vince interjected and the officer nodded once in affirmation. "Snow White's disappearance is alarming and the civil unrest in Sampaguitown has nearly reached its boiling point. I'm sending the two of you to settle the unrest and find her". The officer paused at this point and looked directly at Ranth. "I'm aware you may have personal feelings towards this issue which is why I'm sending you as well as Vince. But I expect you to hold the original mission as your primary objective and finding Snow as your secondary objective. Can you do that son?" "Of course sir", was Ranth's deadpan reply and the opfficer searched Ranth's eyes for any sign of defiance and found nothing. Literally nothing, not even the tiniest scrap of emotion to speak of. "Excellent, I expect you to leave immediately", the officer declared before leaving the room and the two men within it to make their preparations. |

The girl didn't reply at first. But she had been caught out. It seemed that they had all had the same plans. Everyone, as far as Snow's hearing could indicate, had been holding their collective breaths. The man's voice was loud, and a little rough, a bit of a slur to it. She didn't answer for some moments all the same. When she did it was in a slight whisper. "C-Calista.". She said it so quietly, but to Snow it sounded like a normal voice. "Calista what? What is your family name? Where do you hail from? Tell me! Tell me!" The girl whimpered in fright and Snow had a hard time keeping her mouth shut. Though something said quite clearly she must be still, just a little longer, to see how this would unfold. Now now Darius. Calm down. No need to scare the poor girl. This new voice was almost too calm, though Snow was at once thankful and mistrustful of it. She opened her eyes to slits, but couldn't see either of them. Just a hint of clothe in a shade of green. That was all. A few moments later there was the sound of steps, softer ones, likely belonging to the second voice. "Come child, tell us your name and you've some chance of getting out of here if it is the one we seek. She sniffled, the poor thing. And Snow was again tempted to stand up, go to the bars of her cell and make a fuss. But she waited, calmly. "Calista Valentine." This was followed by a long moment of silence from the two men. And then a clattering sound as something was thrown against the bars of the girl's cell and she jumped back in fright. "I'm afraid, that is the wrong answer. Not the name we need at all. But we will keep you. For now. Maybe your family will pay for your safe return. Maybe they won't. Time will tell. The men stepped back toward the stairs. And for a moment Snow contemplated just what the actual fuck might be going on here. Apparently they were professional kidnappers. Possibly bounty hunters. But it wasn't looking good either way. Of course, if they tried getting a ransom for her...She let the thought trail off into a satisfactory imagining of their dire punishment. It was ridiculously nice to know somewhere in the world she had back up. She could see the men now, standing in front of the stairs. One big hulking giant of a man, dressed in leathers which stank of improper drying and treating. His hair was thick but matted down with grease. Yuck. The other, the calm one, was a small slender man, with dark eyes and a strange little goatee on his chin which reached his chest. His clothing was what she had seen. A long dark green robe, embroided in silver here and there. Now they whispered. And she heard every word. "What do we do boss. We need to find the right one, and she ain't it. The other man stroked his weird beard. "I think we will just question them all when they wake up. We can send out ransom notes to all the families. Anyone who can't pay, or won't, we will just kill the girl that belongs to them. But she has to be here. We've abducted every raven haired beauty who was on that road in the last week. Someone has to be the right one. We will just keep searching. Then both men moved way and upstairs. Snow rolled her eyes heavenward once they were gone. Leave it go her to be abducted by the most inept kidnappers in all of Fiore. Edited by Inara Serra, Apr 6 2015, 04:45 AM.

Once the officer was gone, Vince let out an enormous sigh and turned to Ranth. "Damn man, I feel like I jinxed you hella hard by asking about Snow. How are you feeling?" Although the words may not have sounded like it, they were in fact a heartfelt apology as well as a tentative inquiry into the man's emotional state- not something that Ranth was often willing to share in Vince's experience. Of course, this time would hardly prove to be an exception to the rule. "If you have time to worry about me then I assume you're ready to leave right away?" Vince hesitated, assessing his friend- though you wouldn't always know it give how Ranth behaved- and sighed. At the very least, he wasn't about to have a mental breakdown he supposed. Though the idea of Ranth having a breakdown because of something like feelings or emotions was one that even Vince couldn't entertain with a straight face. It was like trying to think of a color that nobody had ever seen. All it did was leave you feeling perplexed and nursing a small migraine. "Alright, well I'll meet you by the south gate then", Vince said reluctantly before leaving the room to gather what belongings he felt he'd need for this impromptu adventure. It would actually be his first mission with Ranth and it was a shame that it had to happen on such foreboding terms. Now something that Vince had been quite looking forward to was marred by the possibility that something terrible had befallen Ranth's girlfriend- not that many people within the guild besides Vince knew of the nature of their relationship. Once Vince had left the room, Ranth stood slowly and let out the breath he'd only been vaguely aware of holding. Crossing the room to where the officer had left the files relating to the Sampaguitown mission, Ranth gazed at it blankly for a moment before suddenly and without warning raising one fist and slamming it down on the folder with enough force that the table's legs shattered and the body of the table fell to the ground, leaving his fist hanging in midair as he drew in another slow breath to collect himself. "Secondary objective my ass", he muttered darkly before turning away from the wreckage of the table and shoved the few things he'd need into a bag and then left the room without a backward glance. Vince would be waiting at the southern gate along with two horses procured from the Grimoire Heart stables specifically for this journey. They were of excellent breeding and could cover great distances without tiring and in the event of being separated from their rider for a prolonged length of time, were trained to return to Acacia on their own. Ranth would settle the riot just as the guild wanted, but he'd do it on his own terms and not a moment sooner than he'd found Snow and if he found that someone had hurt her, then he'd simply have to hurt them worse. Much worse. |

It was some minutes before the footsteps receded fully. At which point Snow stood again. If she could see the cloth of the man's robe, she reasoned, the girl was probably close by. She maneuvered herself to the bars, looking through and seeing a handful of cells on either side of her. No more than ten women total, but there were still ten woman and herself. And the one beside her. This didn't include cells she couldn't see. So she was quiet as she moved, not wanting to cause a ruckus and make their idiot captors come back. "Are you all right Calista? It was soft, and didnt carry further than the room itself. She heard a small sniffle then a tentative, "Yes." Snow nodded to herself. Thatbwas good news indeed. She would be highly pissed were it otherwise. Not that she could do much about her anger at this point. And of course it was there, just below the surface. "How many are here?" she asked the room at large. It was silent for a little, then one by one they answered with their names. There was Calista, Ana, Ammelia, Evelyn, Doreen, Sara, Tina, Lorelei, Jane, Miranda. She sighed. So at least her count hadn't been too off, and the other cell was empty that she couldn't see. Or it was home to a silent and mistrustful occupant. "I am Snow White. I need all of you to keep calm, and keep your wits about you. We will find a way out of this if we don't lose our heads, okay?"There were murmurs of ascent. She had a few questions though. "Any idea how long we've been here?" A long moment of silence. Then. "About six days for me. I think they ...I think they abducted us all in one day. They were expecting someone. Is what they said." This was from Ana. Snow nodded, then remembered she likely couldn't be seen. "Ah. Thank you. Anyone else spoken with them?" Sounds of small "no's" being spoken almost got too loud and she waited while the noise died down. They weren't stupid. That was a bonus. She sat back on her haunches. "So no one knows what name they seek?" She waited a moment as the same sounds of dissent went around the room. This was no doubt a sticky situation, and she needed to be smart and not panic. Not that she was in danger of panicking. It wasn't her usual style. Besides, she had been through worse. And these men obviously weren't the brightest bulbs in the socket. She needed to plan. But she needed time for that. "You're all doing quite well. Keep it up. Give me some time to think and maybe it will all be well." She wouldn't promise anything. Past habits had taught her it was a bad idea. She went quietly back to the cot. It was pure bad luck one girl hadn't listened, and was already having a small panic attack, which drew the attention of their jailers. Hurried footsteps again. This time the little one. "Well Well. So many of you awake. Come now ladies. Do be kind enough to answer a few questions hmm?" |

Vince has the horses saddled and ready by the time he got there- which was no mean feat given how quickly Ranth had departed after Vince. But then again, it was said that Vince had quite an affinity with horses as well as an excellent eye for horseflesh and in fact, was actively involved in the selection of breeding stock for the entire guild. "I've chosen us a pair of fine steeds", Vince announced jovially as Ranth approached. It seemed he'd decided to keep the mood light for the duration of their trip and the archivist had to hold back a groan. The road to Sampaguitown was long and although far from the most dangerous route in Fiore, it wasn't the safest either- especially not at night. That being said, part of the reason why any road could always be considered dangerous was precisely because of people like Ranth and Vince- dark mages going about their business on well traveled roads. Though as far as dark mages went perhaps these two didn't fit the worst stereotype, there were plenty both within Grimoire Heart and Tartaros that lacked their comparatively well mannered temperaments. In fact, Tartaros was known so well as to be renowned for their more... psychopathic tendencies. Ranth supposed that like attracted like for the most part, though if one read the charter for Tartaros and Grimoire Heart, one would find that they were disturbingly similar in their aims and it was really only in their methods that they diverged to a significant extent. Ranth spared a moment to wonder about what might have become of him if he'd been drawn into Tartaros or perhaps even Raven Tail instead of Grimoire Heart almost two years prior to the present day... would he be different to the man he was now? He'd likely never know. "I've mapped our course to Sampaguitown", Vince said as they rode along as a steady canter. For now they shared the road with nobody else and were free to converse without fear of being overheard. "At this pace, we'll arrive in two days but if we..." Vince trailed off as Ranth kicked his horse into a gallop and shot ahead like a bullet "...increase our pace, we can make it by this time tomorrow", he finished his sentence with a sigh as he kicked his own horse into gear to match his friend. "So much for not caring" he grinned. It was just past midday when the pair set off and according to Vince's planned route, they could stop for the night at one of two towns known as Minas and Tora. . Which place they stopped at would depend on the ground they covered during the day, but Vince had a feeling that Minas- the further of the two- would be where they lay their heads in the end. That was assuming he could even convince Ranth to stop at all of course. |

Snow had barely made it back to the cot when the voice sounded again. He didn't seem immediately threatening, but that didn't mean much. Not in her estimation anyway. "They are simple questions ladies, and with Darius as yet upstairs, you've no need to worry about violence or harm coming to you." Sweet as honey the voice was. A trap if ever there had been one. As was quickly proven as silence followed hus initial request. She waited for one girl to say something, but not even panic attack had said a word. "I can go get him if you wish ladies. His version of asking is far less ...kind though. If you know what I mean. Poor brute. He only knows violence. But if you persist...." he was quite the actor. Spreading his hands in a helpless gesture and giving a gusty sigh he turned, oh so slowly, for the stairs. Snow watched through slitted lids. The first girl to give was was panic attack, better known as Jane. Apparently her full name was Jane Dupris. Not the one they were looking for apparently, but a name nonetheless. Skinny turned back, a wide smile painted on his face. "Oh why thank you for breaking the ice Miss Dupris. Come now, there must be others. Please. Its so simple. Even if it isn't the precise name we want, we will be more than willing to try to help you leave here." Snow wanted to punch him. Baiting his trap with false promises this way. But she held her tongue. She was supposed to be sleeping still after all. "And what's more, once we get everyone's names, you get supper." Snow imagined thoughts of food were quite appealing to most at the moment. It certainly was to her. But she wouldn't give away information for such a petty price. Names were something akin to power after all. Several more of the women gave their names. Sara. Ammelia. Tina. The rest, it seemed, were rather fond of keeping up pretenses. And did so aptly. She was surprised by the common sense shared amongst these women. It was an unusual trait on the best of days. Then again, maybe many of them realized they wouldn't be able to leave, or had no one to ransom them. Maybe they were afraid their names were the one these men sought to such dire, if stupid, ends. Whatever the case, their silence made her proud of them. It also made her want to protect them. Step one would be getting a way to get them out. Something with which to pick a lock perhaps. It was always a good thing that sone training within a dark guild was rather unorthodox, though they had taken the pins from her hair, seemingly aware that picking a simple lock might be a good possibility if one wasn't who they needed them to be. But, she thought, food generally came with utensils, unless one wazms prepared to make finger foods for upwards of a half dozen people on short notice. Which she doubted. And they couldn't give them sandwiches all the time anyway. She would wait. Bide her time. It was the best she could work out for now. Her farce would have to end soon. But not the whole thing perhaps. While she contemplated this, the man went upstairs, having collected names and general whereabouts of family members. Letters would be sent, he said. He would return shortly with food, he said. She would see what it was they were meant to be having before she decided whether or not it was a good plan to "wake up." In the mean time...she needed a safe name. And a distant place to be from. Hard to do, when one didn't know where they were. |

There was precious little opportunity for conversation with the blistering pace that Ranth set for the company of two as they galloped down the highway. Here, where the roads were most used and hence in best repair which allowed for the most speed without danger of injury. Knowing that the road ahead wouldn't be nearly so well manicured, Ranth had every intention of making the most ground in the shortest time possible. In situations like this, every minute they dawdled was a minute in which Snow could be drawing closer to some hideous fate. It was just as well that Vince had chosen such a sturdy horse, because any normal horse would have likely reached its limit long ago. The day passed quickly and whilst Ranth had kept up a brisk pace, Vince had convinced him to reign it in just a little for the sake of the horses. Chagrined as he was to admit it, but as Vince pointed out when he protested, they needed the horses for longer than they would last at the pace he was pushing and they'd get there significantly slower if they collapsed and forced them to walk or seek a veterinarian or both. So as the sun finally set upon the pair, it's last glimpse of them had them trotting into the town of Minas just as Vince had expected... "So then I told Sophia that if god wanted me to knit a sweater for my mother then I'd have been born as a Victoria, not a Vince..." Ranth rubbed his face drearily as Vince's mothers day story finally came to an end and he interjected before he decided to delve into some other equally as trivial tale that almost always boiled down to an argument with Sophia that always ended with him being wrong and just not realising it. "I take it you want to handle the horses?" He asked as they dismounted and handed the reigns to his grinning companion. "You gave them quite a workout today, if I don't I doubt they'll make it more than ten miles tomorrow before they collapse", he said with mock admonishment. "I'll handle the accommodation then", Ranth said, pretending to ignore Vince's parting remark as he made his way around the side of the stabled to the adjoining tavern. Sampaguitown was half a days journey from here, which meant that if they left early enough they could be there before lunch time to begin their investigation. Though Minas was close enough to the larger city to receive whatever gossip and rumours abounded and that meant that this could be an ideal time for gathering information a she approached the bar. "Good evening, what can I do for you young man?" The woman behind the counter asked as he approached. "I'm after a single room with two beds, just for tonight", Ranth replied with a smile that he didn't feel but looked no less earnest for it. "Sounds like you're in a hurry. Just come from Sampaguitown?" The woman asked and Ranth actually chuckled. "Actually I'm on my way there". The woman's reaction was one of surprise as she lowered her voice and leaned in. "That's no place for folks to be heading these days. There's talk of all sorts of nasty business in that place. The whole place is in uproar and I've had plenty of folks pass through here looking for a new place to settle down and call home". This sounded like a little more than just 'civil unrest' to Ranth, so he leaned in as well and painted the expression of surprise and concern across his face to match the woman's tone. "I have family there but I haven't heard anything, what's happened there?" Edited by Fafnir Rakesh, Apr 6 2015, 09:29 PM.
