The half demon sighed in relief, actually finding himself grateful for having some help; not something he normally got to experience, a small smile crossing his face at having someone who seemed to share some of his aspects, at least in taking direct action and sticking to the shadows, his tail flicking in amusement as he took a quick moment to be light-hearted. "The light is too bright for us anyway, right?" Tilting his head in thought he tried to piece together what he remembered and what he had encountered. "Right, patterns, or other strangeness. The biggest one I can think of is that it's never the same people. Given I'm not killing any of them, and rarely even fighting them, I would expect across enough attacks there would be a few repeats in who showed up in the crowds if they were doing this out of hatred." Stopping for a second, head leaning the other way as his ears twitched, "Actually, that's strange too. Always crowds, and never any magic users. I mean this is Magnolia, across a sampling of assholes some...what, 10%, or whatever the real figure is, should use magic. Plus I'm know I'm not a heavy weight compared to some of the demons or mages out there, but across a dozen attacks and some 300 people, it's always just...been normal people." Looking a little sheepish, he scratched the back of his head, not really sure how to phrase what he wanted to say next, "Also, they, ah...hmm, they all smell 'wrong', but in the same way. Not all literally the same, but, you know the same way all lightning mages smell like ozone in addition to their other scents. Or err, I suppose you wouldn't know." Laughing a little out of nerves before shaking his head, "All of them had a common component to their scent, and it wasn't anything human, and I don't know how to describe it except as 'wrong', or perhaps as...off, in some way." The teenage blond from before with a lock of brilliant red hair shook his head as he approached the pair, "You really are bad at explaining what's going on, aren't you. But I think you got all the key points in the end." Kain looked surprised to see him, though not threatened as he asked, "Yen, the-" Yenene cut him off, "Safe. She's with Fairy Tail now. Alayna is playing with her and everything. I see you've made a new friend while I was busy," the canine spirit currently in human form grinning as he looked Zak up and down, "Kain always does seem to run into all sorts of interesting people. Yenene; do you have a name, or can I just call you pretty boy?" The Fairy Tail mage just sighed, wondering how much benefit he actually got out of being bound to this trickster spirit. |

Zak nodded with a crooked smile on his delicate features as he said, “Sometimes the light does reveal too much. Besides so much fun can be had in the dark.” The demon hunter looked sharply at Kain when he made his next observation. He looked up and away for a moment or two as if recalling something deeply kept in his memory before he said, “It’s most interesting that you should say that you detect a certain note of wrongness in their scent. I can’t possibly pick that up but I did sense a disturbance in their energy fields. It was sublte but it was there,” he furrowed his brows and added, “It is something I felt a long time ago. I had hoped I wouldn’t sense it again. I…” Before he could continue, a blond teenager came walking up and introduced himself as Yenene. Zak’s cool emerald eyes raked him up and down for a moment before his customary crooked smile flickered into life and he said, “I’ve been called that before, that and a few other things besides. My name, however, is Zak Belfry. I’m pleased to meet you, Yenene.” He added, “It isn’t common for me to run into spirits though. Most interesting! What’s your take on all of this demonic madness?” |

Yenene grinned at the response he got, going to speak before wincing and staggering, "I think I've been running around on two legs entirely too long...one second..." It almost looked like the spirit had fallen unconscious as he dropped, his form shuddering and shimmering before being engulfed in a cloud of energy, which soon dissipated to reveal his true form, that of a canine-shaped spirit with rather striking black and red fur. "Really, I don't know how you people do it, it's so...ungainly." Shaking his body almost like he was met, his mane ruffling, "Well, glad you think I'm interesting at least Zak, this one," his tail flicking towards Kain, "just thinks I'm annoying, can you believe that?" The half demon growled and shook his head; truly how dare he think Yen could be annoying sometimes when he acted like...well this. "I'm not sure you'll want my answer though, I served a demon for over a century, and well, I'm only a century and months in change old." Not that it looked like Yenene was actually going to let that stop him when he could talk instead, "My take on it is that humans are short lived and weak willed, cowardly even. They forget the lessons of the past and commit the same mistakes over and over, and will blame anything they can to deal with their place in the universe." The canine spirit had a dark look on his face, "But maybe I'm just bitter that my old master died because he protected humans, but in this pathetic excuse for justice would have been hunted down." Kain looked surprised, this being the first time he had heard this too. "Is that...how you actually feel about humans? You've never mentioned it before." Yenene recovered a little of his normally teasing demeanour, "Well you know, you're half human, I wouldn't want to insult you. And...no, when you straddle the lines between mortal, spirit, and demon, and talk to aberrations, angels, fae, and ghosts, you quickly learn to judge people as individuals, not races. Humanity has some bright points...I just don't think the actions of them in this inquisition help justify them as a race worth protecting like my previous master did for 300 years. It's a sad thought that your demon half making you territorial and possessive of Magnolia might be making you a better human than most we've encounter in the last fortnight." He pounced his way over to be next to Zak, looking curious, "In any case we're not here to talk about me losing faith in humanity after 100 years of not questioning if they were worth saving, Kain has better senses than me, all I smell on them other than you know, race, gender, age, the usual; is anger, actually dripping in the air rage. That's what Kain says instead smells 'off' to him, which I keep telling him is probably magic then, but he's not sure. Sounds like you've felt it too, if on a different channel, or frequency, whatever you want to call it. Care to enlighten us if it's familiar to you?" Kain didn't really know what to say, feeling like he probably should address what his companion was feeling, but...later, after this madness here had been solved. "If you have sensed it before and know what it is, it would help us." Edited by Cloud, Dec 14 2015, 08:41 AM.

Other people might have balked at the sudden transformation but in Zak’s long life he’d seen bizarre, bloodcurdling and just plain weird things, so a spirit taking on its true form wasn’t that much of a shock. He looked piercingly at Yenene and answered, “I understand a large measure of how you feel. I have myself seen that human tendency at work. However, I am rather bound to serve humanity. It is the price which I have paid for the gifts that I’ve been granted.” He agreed with the spirit’s sentiment and continued to speak in his resonant tenor tones. He said, “There are two strands at work here in my view. The first is the Hell Lord named Yxtraggoth that was released in some kind of temporal disturbance. I believe it may actually be influencing events against its fellow demons in order to gain more control in this plane. The second is something else I sensed during the dimensional rupture that happened in the temporal disturbance, “ he paused for a moment to think before adding, “I sensed the presence of something very ancient and very evil. It is an Old God called the Dreamer and it comes from...a place far beyond anything most humans understand.” Zak sighed and continued, “It once lived on this planet before the races we know existed. It would like very much to remove most of them again and dominate the world. It would be in its best interest to sow chaos here. It has acolytes that serve it and I believe they may be stirring up trouble too. The presence of either of these beings might be what Kain is sensing.” He concluded, “I think we ought to start looking at the Dreamer cult first of all. Yxtraggoth is going to take time to develop a following. Can you figure out where the scent might be coming from, Kain?” |

Kain just blinked, trying to take that all in and honestly most of it going over his head, while Yenene nodded along and took mental notes, but having a question aimed at the half demon seemed to snap him back into focus. "Huh? Oh, ah, sort of. I've tried before." The Fairy Tail mage looking a bit defeated as he continued, "I can track them down easily enough after the fact, humans are easy to follow in that way, but the...wrongness, on them, I can follow them back to their home, and then it stops, like it just left them." The half demon's tail flicking as he thought, "Right, that might be relevant, the mobs I've had time to investigate and track down where each member came from, they've come from a small area, all of them fitting into a tight few blocks." Kain looked a little sheepish, "Sorry, that's probably relevant, I should have mentioned it before, I mean, I would have thought if it was purely...ideological, then people wouldn't let geography get in the way. Magnolia isn't that big of a city." The inugami mage scratched the back of his head, "Anyway, magical based influence isn't easy to track, if it's possible at all, natural scents follow physical laws, magic...comes and goes as it pleases, annoyingly enough. But I could try it, if I could find a source that didn't fade, someone working for this...Dreamer, even if it was just where they've walked by. If you knew what places his acolytes might favour, I know what I'm looking for, and it would beat exploring the city at random hoping for a hit." "Hmm, so, let's assume that no magic and well, small fry, means people of weak will; all coming from a select small area that changes each time; never the same people; and all with the same influence over them? Maybe I should give the people in the this city another chance because that sounds like a spell if I ever heard of one, one to cover an area and maybe one that has problems influencing the same person over and over, possibly because it draws upon lingering emotions and then exhausts them but that's going far too speculative and doesn't help. Is something like that possible do you think Zak, or is that jumping to conclusions?" Kain's looked mildly annoyed, his hand scratching at where his ears normally would be as he shrugged, "Assuming any of that is remotely right, and we don't have a place to go investigate, I can try just...the middle of the last area and hope to find something to track." |

Zak was thoughtful as he let Kain talk. In his business, a great deal of time had to be devoted to gathering information. He was always loathe to move or react without having some basis for what he was doing. It was dangerous when one was hunting powerful demons to strike blindly. He decided to take the points that were made one at a time and address them. He said, “Don’t apologize Kain. This isn’t something that can be rushed. As long as you have information, we can work with it. It happens that I do know where to start our search for the acolytes of the Dreamer. It also happens that you are generally correct about the idea of a spell although it isn’t a conventional spell,” he furrowed his brows and continued, “It is more like...an insidious idea that once planted in the mind, worms its way in deeper and deeper. The Dreamer is so-called because it is able to enter the mind of one who sleeps and implant notions there.” He added, “It is quite possible that it hasn’t gained enough strength to keep those ideas permanently implanted in the minds of those it seeks to influence. I have no doubt that its acolytes will be attempting to bring it more fully into power on this plane of existence. If we can stop them and send it back into the Outside, we might get some of the more egregious aspects of this mess under control.” The pale, tall man looked between Yenene and Kain and said, “Shall we go hunting?” |

Yenene shuddered and his fur stood up on end, his tail flicking side to side as he listened to what this dreamer could do, "That...sounds extremely terrifying. If you let something like that fester for a while... Amaterasu I wonder how many people in the city already have a foreign idea planted... Just lingering and waiting to enforce itself..." Kain scratched the back of his head with a hand, ruffling his black spiky hair, looking a little awkward, "I still feel like I should be sorry, I should have put this information together sooner and actually done something about it, particularly with something so dangerous." Yenene let out a bark of laughter, shaking his head, "Kain, you can feel sorry for yourself later, you were busy running around playing hero. But right now you actually have an enemy to hunt down, this is pretty much your exact element." The half demon shrugged, meeting Zak's eyes, "Well, if you know where we can start looking, you'll have my help. Heck, if we find even one of them I can hopefully track them back to wherever they're meeting, my skills have to useful for something." "So yes, let's go hunting," smirking before suddenly looking a little sheepish, "though err, on route, could you explain how do we actually stop this Dreamer? If it's from Outside how do we harm it and make it leave?" Yenene following after the pair let out a thoughtful sound, "And maybe both of you should work out what the other can do, unless you want to fight together blind. Not something I'd recommend with...what if this is from Outside that's what I would call an aberration, right?" Edited by Cloud, Dec 17 2015, 09:49 AM.

Zak shook his head and said, “I wouldn’t think too long on that topic, Yenene. It will only lead you to conclusions that you do not wish to entertain. We have to focus on stopping it before those conclusions are forced upon all of us in a most graphic way.” Turning to Kain, the lanky man smiled his slightly wry and crooked smile. He said, “Yenene is correct. Apologies are useless at this point. You did what you were able to do and what felt right at the time. Now you have a chance to truly make an impact.” The tall, razor thin man was already stretching out into his long stride as he began to lead the little party towards the last place he’d heard of a large Dreamer ritual being enacted. He was sure that he wouldn’t have to check his pace too much. Kain and Yenene seemed quite able to keep up with his ground-eating strides. He said, “I shall address your first question, Kain. There is a book I have in my posession. It is a twisted tome full of the most evil potential but it has one positive aspect. It contains a series of formulae that will allow us to open a portal and throw the Dreamer back into the outer darkness. Once it is gone, the delusions will fall away from anyone who has been in their grip.” Zak acknowledged Yenene’s point and said, “Well Kain had some demonstration of my abilities a little earlier. I also have a soul severing sword and supernaturally granted healing powers. I happen to brew an absolutely delicious cup of tea as well. I hope these skills and talents are qualification enough. I am curious to know what Kain is able to do?” The tall, pale man turned his intense gaze on his half demon companion in interest. |

Following after their impromptu ally Yenene tried to keep a straight face but let out a bark of laughter, tail swaying and his ears sitting up, "Well, you should have mentioned the cup of tea first!" the spirit trying to collect himself and failing multiple time before finally, "No but seriously a soul severing sword, whatever Kain saw, and healing powers, I'm not sure you need us." Kain raised an eyebrow, trying to get a read on whatever the canine spirit was doing, "You know my magic is pretty versatile too, right?" Yen nodded, grinning widely, "I know, but, soul severing sword, that's so much cooler than Ensis Exoricizan." The half demon grumbled, reminding those around him just briefly that yes he was still a teenager with something of a ego as he said "I would have thought an anti-magic demon slaying sword in our business where foes might not have souls or have the body and soul form one unit was pretty useful..." Yen nodded, doggy grin plastered on his face, "I know, I was teasing, but at least it got you to not sell yourself short. Now do I need to call your magic puppy summoning, or can you actually explain it?" Kain just sighed, not dignifying the question with a direct answer as he talked to Zak, "Right, in short I'm half dog demon. Asides from some of the expected abilities of that like having a demonic transformation, heightened senses, rapid regeneration, you know the things that make our lives difficult when it's them that have it, my blood in short makes me...Yen, what would you describe an inugami tsukai as?" Acting in his role as something of a magic nerd instead of teasing companion, Yenene supplied "Summoner of elemental spirits. Simplistic canine like spirits attuned to the darkness element in Kain's case. While in terms of magical theory one can argue for the difference between conjuring raw elemental power like in elemental make magics verse calling up spirits of that element, functionally it's all the same." The Fairy Tail mage just blinked at the long winded answer and let out a frustrated growl, "Would have just been easier to say I was a darkness elemental mage with some demon bonuses." The spirit shrugged, an amused look on his face. "Maybe, but less interesting. Asides from the 'standard' elemental tricks you might expect, it might be worth note he can let us and himself fly, despite his elemental affinity." Kain shrugged and looked a little sheepish, "Something about my full-bloodied relations really wanting a way to go toe to toe with bird demons. Anyway if that's quite enough about me can we focus on using creepy books to get rid of creepier things from Outside?" Yenene chuckled, "Yeah sure Kain. Answer your question pretty boy with killer brewing skills?" In the meantime the wolf boy took a moment to undo his sealing, making his ears and tail appear again. Having it active while trying to fling magic around would be annoying, and his heritage would be obvious when a pack of dogs at his call attacked anyway. Edited by Cloud, Dec 19 2015, 03:38 PM.

Zak smiled briefly, his androgynous features crossed by his rougish smile as he said, “The more help, the better. I cannot possibly monitor all of the situations that are occurring in the world without a network of allies. The Belfry family has become more of...an agency than an actual clan at this point. You’d just be joining my network, Yenene.” The demon hunter answered Kain simply and said, “I suspect your magic will come in handy before much time has passed. I should add the Devourer also destroys spiritual material as well. However, as Yenene says, you have now avoided selling yourself short and that is a crucial lesson to learn.” The mention of flight made Zak smile again but he responded to Yenene again. He said, “Yes we can focus on the task at hand. We’re nearing the temple of the Dreamer in this city and I am not sure what kind of resistance we’ll be facing in order to enter. I want to be ready.” The little party walked roughly one block more as they finished their journey into a rough section of the city. The houses were ramshackle affairs in various states of disrepair and furtive eyes watched from windows and darted away as Zak, Kain and Yenene approached. The tall, pale man called a halt and lead his companions into an alleyway. He said, “If you take a glance out that way, you’ll see that two guards are flanking the doorway. We need to remove them without creating an alarm. I will take the man on one side if you take the man on the other side. We’ll walk up casually before we make our move. Are there any questions? Suggestions?” |
