Who you calling chocobo head...

Kain sighed wearily, cursing under his breath as he hit a dead end turning down the alleyway. He really should get better at navigating the streets of his hometown but street signs were so inconvenient compared to scent. Asides he could normally just scramble over walls or fences in his way, though the reason why he couldn't today reminded him of her presence as she clung to his leg tightly, absolutely terrified; the inugami mage able to feel her rapidly beating heart against his leg. The pounding sound of many footsteps behind him stopped as the mob of angry people following him reached the mouth of the alleyway, the tall slab of meat of a man leading them having a successful sneer on his face.

"Dead end, freaks. Hand her over and maybe we'll let you go at least," the wicked, sarcastic laughter spreading through the group being all the answer Kain needed as to the seriousness of the offer. The wolf-boy had moved to face the crowd, his back nearly against the wall stopping his path though he left room to shield the girl with his body who was whimpering and looking at the ground, unable to speak through fear. What they wanted with the young child seemed pointless to ask when the crowd of a dozen or so had various improvised weapons, simply enough to kill her, but as to why, well Kain would prefer to know that before he did something reckless. "Why are you after her? What has she ever done to you?"

The leader seemed almost insulted that he would have to answer that question, "Isn't it obvious? Our King is waging a crusade against the demon cult that ravaged our country with demons, we're merely helping to make sure no cultist or other demon lover escapes the inquisition." The half demon male didn't answer except to growl loudly, weighing up his options. "Yeah, right, because everyone with demon blood, even if they're seven, is in a demon cult or sympathises with them." As tempting as it would be to just beat them up and be on his way, he was outnumbered while having someone to protect, if someone slipped past him... Asides as colossal dicks as this mob was, they were Fiorian colossal dicks, it wouldn't help others caught up in this mess to just fight them and enforce their views that anyone with demon blood was bad.

Still, he had to get out of here with the girl, so the Fairy Tail mage started to call power to him, his shadow becoming a circle around him, almost like a pit as black wolves pulled themselves out of the darkness, surrounding Kain and snarling at the crowd. "Still want her back?!" he yelled over the snarling spirits, his own canine teeth and claws elongated. Truly he wanted them to just back down, not wanting to make a scene, but today was not a day for him to have his wishes come true. Instead, perhaps resorting to fight and flight and too stupid to run, the mob of people ran at him. Going to curse but again catching it under his breath for the sake of current company, the pack of inugami by his side, 15 in all; leapt from the shadows and towards the crowd, exploding when they struck with magical force. Fortunately for his attackers Kain aimed for the walls and floor around them, content with merely throwing them from their feet and disorienting them. In the chaos he scooped up the girl, her fox tail wrapping around his arm as with preternatural agility he jumped over the bowled over crowd, landed back in the main street, and took off in a sprint. "Damn it! So much for not making a scene..." His little scuffle already seeming to draw attention from the locals.

Zak Belfry was trying to mind his own business, but that never worked very well for the lean, slender man who had the dubious distinction of heading one of the oldest, most distinguished families tasked with battling chaotic elements within the supernatural world. Zak was constantly being drawn into conflicts, battles and other assorted mayhem. The emerald-eyed man had spent several hundred years finding out that he couldn’t escape these occurrences yet a part of him clung to the idea that that he might get a reprieve.

Now with the resurgence in demonic activity, his schedule was ridiculously full, especially as he was trying to ensure that all of his siblings and his employees kept their murderous tendencies somewhat under control. He wanted to enforce his view that what mattered most was the pursuit of balance and not the indiscriminate destruction of every spiritual being that might be classed as demonic. This view had made him unpopular with the traditionalists in the Belfry clan but he’d managed to silence them.

Turning a corner, his heart sank as he saw a mob closing in around a clearly supernatural youth and his small companion, intent on doing them harm despite the fact that they’d done nothing to provoke the action. They managed to escape thanks to some quick thinking and good use of power by the young man to avoid doing too much violence, but the mob’s bloodlust was up and they’d pursue him until they achieved their goal. Zak was going to have to dissuade them from further action. He stepped right into their path and was immediately wreathed by a glowing whorl of galactic energy that spread out from his chest, rendering his outline transparent. His tone was confident and cool as he spoke.

“I wouldn’t pursue them any further if I were you. I don’t take kindly to victimizing anyone without a good reason. The mere fact that they’re demons is not a good reason. You ought to seek out demons that are actively seeking to cause you harm. I suppose being dumb, you lot are going to need a graphic illustration of why you need to stop.”

He aimed at the feet of one of the men in the crowd and a coruscating spear of unbelievably hot plasma arced through the air. As it flew, it solidified and struck the ground right at his feet. He stumbled backwards with a muffled cry and the crowd stopped, looking at one another, hesitating. Zaki smiled.

“There are more of those where that came from and much worse. Do you really want to find out what else I can do?”

Feet slamming into the pavement Kain bolted down the Magnolia street, not daring to look back to see how quickly the mob was reorganising itself for risk of slowing himself down, holding the girl he had rescued close to keep her secure. His ears twitched though, moving to help catch sound from behind and the half-demon quickly realised he was no longer being pursued; someone had stepped between himself and the crowd when he wasn't looking. He'd have to go back and thank them, or help them as the case may be, in a moment, but for now he quickly rounded a corner sighing in relief at the sight of a teenager with blond and red hair, a look somewhere between weary and worry on his face.

The crowd of people at the same time didn't really know what to make of the new comer, and while the mentality of many verse one kept them all from running at the same time, those towards the back slowly slinked away so they could make a quick escape. Without a demon to focus their hatred on either, the momentum of the crowd faltered and for several awkward moments they just stood there, wondering what to do. The seemingly leader of the mob, apparently as stupid as he was big, simply yelled out, "Get the demon lover, he can't stop all of us!" All the same the impressive display of power had worked wonders, and most were still too stunned to act, and most of those that could act, fled in the other direction. Only 10 people, including the towering man of hatred, actually attempted to run at the emerald-eye man.

"Yen, good to see you," Kain catching his breath as he passed over the kitsune child to the Blond, who took her wordlessly, despite the confused look on his face as to why he was doing the carrying, "Take her somewhere safe, I didn't lose the people after me," the shape-shifted spirit merely nodding to say he understood, a caring smile on his face as he looked down at the child in his arms, "Come on, we'll go somewhere safe, just hold onto me," the small child nodding, still looking terrified as she hugged Yenene, the inugami taking off quickly, though not breaking out into a run, as the Fairy Tail mage made his way back onto the street he had just turned off, in time to hopefully actually see who had helped him, and how he dealt with the remnants of the angry mob.

Zak sighed and shook his head as he said, “Oh you really are a bunch of idiots, aren’t you?” he shrugged and added, “I guess we’re just going to have to make everything complicated.”

From the sheath that was conveniently slung at his hip, he drew his soul-eating sword named Devourer and easily, one might even say nonchalantly, adopted a stance that spoke of long combat experience. He was hoping that he could deter this bunch without actually cutting anyone. The authorities didn’t take kindly to wanton limb amputations and worse. The last thing he needed was to end up a guest of the local constabulary.

Of course, the ringleader hung back, hoping that his little gang would be able to deal with the demon hunter on their own. Three of the thugs rushed him at once and he turned his blade to the flat and knocked the first one out with an easy swat to the temple. The second raised his cudgel high and left a wide open torso of which Zak took full advantage and slammed the pommel of Devourer into his solar plexus. All of the air went out of the man and he collapsed in an untidy heap. The third attacker lost his nerve and simply kept running.

That left him with six men and he concluded that he should even things up a little. Gathering up the tremendous power that he held inside, he let a wave of it explode from him in a blinding flash of heat, light and energy. It flung the group away from him and left them blinded from the intensity of the light. The ringleader, who was at least possessed of better reflexes, had jumped behind a wall and avoided the worst of the blast. Now he stood, facing Zak Belfry. He was belligerent enough that he didn’t consider what had happened to everyone else and charged the demon hunter who let him come.

As he approached, he drew a wicked looking (if crude) iron blade, circling the lanky man. He said nothing but rushed the youthful looking male. Zak easily parried his powerful blows and when the chance came, he slammed the pommel of the sword right into the man’s face, breaking his nose. The thug staggered backwards, gasped and collapsed. The demon hunter stood over him, point of his blade against the man’s throat and spoke calmly. He said, “The next time I hear of you targetting innocents, this blade’s going to go right through your neck, consequences to me be damned. Now get the fuck out of here before I change my mind.”

The man staggered to his feet and ran off. Zak sheathed Devourer and strode over to where Kain stood. He asked, “I’m glad I stepped in when I did. That lot looked nasty. The name’s Belfry by the way. Zak Belfry. What might I call you?”

Kain turned back onto the main street where the scuffle was happening just in time for his pointed canine ears to pick up the quite distinctive sound of a nose breaking against a sword pommel in high definition surround sound despite the distance, whining on reflex in sympathy as he approached the person that had stepped in to help, and the last dregs of the crowd running off. Part of his teenage self, or perhaps demon self, was annoyed for some stupid reason, something about having someone help him when he didn't need it, but with a small shake of his head he threw off that thought as he made his way over.

Asides from being wrong (while he probably could have easily fought them, doing so while keeping a child save, or without killing them, was less certain), his time within Fairy Tail had over and over taught him that receiving help wasn't a sign of weakness. "Thanks for the assist, Zak. Kain. Kain Inugami," his tail wagging behind subconsciously, nails pointed like claws as he extended his hand as is offering it for a hand shake, "Not that I'm going to complain about the help, but why?" His head tilted to the side like a curious dog as he looked at Zak. "I mean, you're not from Fairy Tail, and I don't otherwise recognise you."

The half demon looking around them to the various passersby's on the street with brown eyes, quite a few people stopping to look and gossip after the thrashing the demon hunter had dished out. "Err, hmm, perhaps we should walk and talk, unless you're one for crowds." Regardless of the man's decision and response, Kain's ears would flatten against his head, and his tail go between his legs, almost like he was trying to hide his features from the onlookers, if ineffectively. Though on average Magnolia wasn't too hard for anyone related to demon kind, the Inquisition going on did stir up all sorts of trouble, like say the crowd from before. The Fairy Tail mage was strong enough to deal with most trouble...but others weren't so lucky, and the teenager had a habit of involving himself in situations to help them, again, much like just before.

Zak nodded in assent to Kain’s suggestion and the pair of them began moving away from the gathering crowd without a word. Once they’d cleared a safe distance, the tall and lanky man flashed a quick look at his companion and said, “You asked me why I helped you. I’ve spent a long time and I do mean a long time traveling this world. I’ve seen some truly terrible things happen to people. Some of them deserved it. Most of them didn’t. I saw the potential for something awful happening and I stepped in before I had to watch it happen.”

He added, “I’ve no qualms about killing evil when I find it. I do have qualms about people’s knee jerk, violent response to anything or anyone who is supernatural in origin. You and your friends were minding your own business and you were attacked simply out of ignorance. I don’t stand by and let that sort of thing take place.”

Finally the lean, frankly pretty man asked, “What’s going on around here? It seems like things are coming totally unhinged. I wouldn’t think it particularly safe for you these days here.”

As they walked away from curious souls that might ask questions and eyes prying into the scuffle Zak and Kain had been involved in, the half demon let out a sigh of relief, glad to be away from them even if he tried to not show it. As much as he wouldn't admit it, the last few weeks here hadn't been easy. The Fairy Tail mage lead the pair of them down seemingly random streets in the city, preferring ones that he knew would be fairly quiet even at this time of day. As he listened to Zak talk, pointed, blond-fur ears twitching, Kain fished out a paper tag covered in a scrawling, seemingly nonsensical writing, though some scholars might recognise it as infernal, the language of demons from worlds or planes other than this one, for now just holding it as he consider the other's words.

Zak's questions coming to an end, the half demon muttered a word in the same language of the tag and his tail and ears faded from sight, as he put away the seal, "It's not safe for me, but this city is still safer than most places and I have some tricks. Plus being a guild mage offers me some safety, this is Fairy Tail's home tuff after all." Shaking his head he muttered to himself, "You sound like a good person, I only wish everything could think that way," tilting his head to the side as he thought, speaking up louder to address Zak. "Well I'm sure you know all about the inquisition out against demon cults after the demonic invasion in many cities." Kain having a sad smile on his face, "People are paranoid and fear what they don't know. That makes them violent, angry."

He sighed heavily, tail going between his legs, "And those without information will blindly assume that everyone demonic is evil in this mad hunt. In short, anyone and anything related to demons, guilty or innocent, is fair game in the minds of many citizens." Kain looked like he wanted to say something more, scratching the back of his head before letting out a frustrated snarl and continuing, "I've been doing what I can, helping, stepping in as you put it, when I do see someone in trouble but...I can't be everywhere at once. I just wish I could do something more permanent," the half demon letting out a nervous laugh, "Sorry, I think I went on a bit of a...ramble, towards the end."

Zak managed to hide his recoil from the piece of paper with the words written in infernal. It was deeply ingrained in him as a demon hunter to loathe and fear that language but he realized that it wasn’t evil in and of itself. He was learning how to differentiate between the ravening hordes that did seek the world’s end and those who were not truly of the pure darkness. His family had taken centuries to even begin to moderate their stance. They considered him to be a dangerous radical when he simply viewed himself as taking an evolutionary step.

The pale, lanky man sighed and said, “I know all about the Inquistion. I have no reservations about the desire to protect the world from true invasion. I’ve been hunting some types of demons for my entire life, but I’m horrified by the way any and all supernatural creatures are attacked. I’m trying to change my own family’s attitude and it’s a battle in and of itself. I don’t know how you change the world’s attitude.”

He said, “Now what do we need to do? I want to help you in any way I can. At least with you, I have a concrete individual who needs my aid. Any assistance I can render, I will.”

One thing that Zak Belfry didn’t project in most situations was benevolent reassurance. Normally his icy emerald eyes and androgynous face were the last thing one saw before one’s existence was ended with extreme prejudice but there was a gentle expression on his haughty features and a warmth in his green eyes as he regarded Kain.

"Well, that makes two of us," Kain smiling softly, happy to have found someone that would stand against the Darkness, but still sounding a little defeated at the enormity of the task. "I'll do anything I can to protect this place, but to be honest I really don't know where to start." Letting a grin that showed off his canines cross his face, "Though even I'm not so young and naive to think to change the whole world's attitude though, as nice of a thought as it is." The Fairy Tail mage shrugged as Zak asked him a question, more importantly offered him his help, wishing he had a better or more concrete answer to give, "As I said, I've been helping people caught in the crossfire. Generally I ah, keep an ear out," looking a little...pained, if anything, at mentioning his heightened senses while his inhuman features were hidden, "for anyone in trouble, and most of the time that's enough. Most of the time."

Head tilted to the side as he thought, the pair walked into a large city square, which among things was well known for the Kardia Cathedral present, the doors leading into the awe inspiring church currently wide open. "The Fellowship of Saint Damien has been helping where it can," looking towards the cathedral, "But to be honest they're still dealing with those displaced from the war with Bosco, or those injured in the demonic invasion. My guild mates helps out where they can as well, but I can't ask them to drop everything, particularly when what they do is still important, and how they get paid. Renegade mages and feral monsters don't wait for times of peace to stir up trouble." The half demon sighed, realising he was rambling a bit again, "In any case I can't complain, the guild master is letting me use the spare rooms for anyone I pick up in my little rescue missions."

Meeting those emerald eyes with his own chocolate brown ones, he was reminded of a friend that looked a little like Zak, deciding he should at least come up with some idea, if vague. "Okay, ways to help, options. Number one; a better way to find anyone that might be targeted before they become under attack, so I have less close calls or...misses. I can't really think of a good way to improve the, admittedly mediocre, system I have at the moment, though if you have a information network or a magic that would help, I'm all ears. Number two; find out who or what is stirring up shit on my turf. As bad as the inquisition has made things, the attacks have been too frequent and too well planned to just be random attacks. Without help though, I've been forced to only act in reaction. Maybe with help I'd get enough breathing room to go on the offensive."

Kain pondered his options a little more, and let out a heartless chuckle, "Or well, option three, I give up trying to make my city safe and just try to end this inquisition as quickly as possible by going straight to the source, but I'd rather not leave half-bloodied children to fend for themselves; asides, I'm sure the Knights are handling the spearhead of this operation just fine."

It was Zak’s turn to look pensive for a moment. He’d lived for a very, very long time and had seen this kind of thing come and go over and over. Somehow he hadn’t yet become entirely jaded and he still had some notion that lending his help to those who needed it was worth doing on its own merits. He knew that often it was futile but his family had been blessed by a magical being and that blessing couldn’t simply be wasted.

While he still had chasing down the Hell Lord known as Yxtraggoth on his mind, it wasn’t like that interdimensional interloper was active at the moment. He’d managed to damage the demon enough that it would go recuperate for a while and muster its forces, so staying to help wasn’t a problem.

He spoke to Kain in a thoughtful tone, “I have a rather extensive network of eyes and ears in the city. I think I can have them help us seek those who need help and protection and weed out those who are a danger. I’m sure we can determine who’s being a shit disturber as well and deal with them and their organization. We can focus our efforts on that angle. I’ve always been one for taking action directly.”

He finished, “I think you’re doing the right thing by not letting the children fend for themselves. Let the Knights do what they do. We can work in the shadows. After all, that’s where I’ve spent most of my life.”

He clapped his hands together and said, “Right. First things first, tell me what patterns you’ve noticed in the attacks. We can’t move until we analyze how our opponent is moving.”
