The priest nodded in understanding. "Yes I am aware. We had a string of close calls with nightly creatures. Its why we worked to build the walls around the town." he said, directing to the gate and such. "But fear not. We have a tavern over there, where you may eat and rest. I think you will find our town hospitable for as long as you need, but what trouble befell you?" he asked. Syeena tilted her glasses as she addressed the priestly fellow, and glanced at Varriden. "Um... there was this guy who was harassing me out in the woods and Varriden here scared him off," Syeena said, lying a bit about the details of the trip. She didn't say any more and left it to Varriden, but she did say something to the priest. "By the way, did you hear any word of monsters near this town? After all with the demon inquisition and all, there have been rumors of things like demonic charged werewolves around here. You know anything about that?" Syeena asked, her quizical, reporter nature kicking in as she asked him. The man looked a bit confused but nervous at the words she said. "Oh I am afraid no sight of werewolves, but you never know," he said. Very suspicious. |

Varriden nodded. "I can imagine - goodness knows what kinds of beasts are lurking in those woods." When the man asked what had happened to them, exactly, Varriden spared a glance at Syeena, letting her decide how to tell the details of their little encounter with the ruffian on the road, as he wasn't sure she wanted the details of her cat's nature revealed. Well, not so much its nature as how aggressive it could be in protecting its owner. Some people had problems with pets that bit and scratched. Thankfully, she gave him the short version of the tale, that a ruffian had approached them and that Varriden ran them off, leaving out the part where her cat tried to claw off his face. Good call, Varriden thought. Finishing up the story, Varriden said "Yes, some suspicious stranger approached her and I helped convince him to leave, thankfully without either me or her having to resort to violence." Technically, he wasn't lying, as the cat had done all the actual physical attacks. Syeena, since they were on the subject of monsters in the woods nearby, brought up the demon inquisition, asking if there were any werewolves nearby, to which the old priest looked nervous, but said that nothing like that had been seen nearby. Clearly the tone of a man trying to keep something hidden. "Nothing at all? I thought you just said that you had a series of near-misses with creatures roaming the night, to the point where you built a wall around the entire town." Varriden said, suspicious. Clearly they had monster troubles, but the man seemed unwilling to talk about it, despite previously mentioning the defenses they had to set up for that exact problem around the town. |

"Well we have reported seeing creatures. Some wolves sure but nothing more than mere beasts," the priest said, renewing his calm feature. "What 'inhuman' creatures we see, are more around our boarders. We had the wall created actually 3 years ago but we only recently been improving its fortifications. We close the gate every night to be safe." It still was strange for his behavior , as well as the answer about the thug outside in the woods. Syeena glanced at Varriden. After that they gave him some minor goodbyes and went for the inn. The inn was a bit empty, save for the small number of staff. While this was a central part of Fiore, where travelers would come, it was rather inactive. Sadly the demon inquisition probably didn't allow much travel. No one could blame them really. Syeena made reservations for a room for her and Hex-- hex not being noticed yet. There was always the chance the hotel didn't allow 'animals' . Hex never really liked those anti-animal rules. While Varriden would likely arrange for his own room-- Syeena did not intend to be separate just now. Once they had made arrangements, Syeena regardless goes into HIS room with Hex beside her. She barges in without a word and Hex hopes into the room as well, jumping onto the bed. "Okay, we need to talk," Syeena told Varriden, ignoring the whole 'this is my room' issue. Not to mention the possibility of cat hair on his bed. "I have to level with you about a few things and I think you might be aware of it. THis town has a strange 'local secret' vibe to it. Don't you think?" With her glasses it was hard to tell, but she had an intense look on her face that betrayed her energetic voice. |

The Priest mentioned seeing creatures, but nothing more than the occasional beast, whereas more monstrous creatures had apparently been seen closer to the town itself. From what the Priest said, the wall had actually been there for a few years, but was only being tended to properly now due to the sudden need for extra defenses around the town itself. "Well, wouldn't serve much purpose as a wall if the gate was left open, admittedly," Varriden said with a slight nod. Still, his info seemed just....off, somehow. As if despite the danger literally surrounding his town, he was perfectly calm about the entire thing. And he was the Priest, too - alot of people tend to turn to faith in times of crisis, from what Varriden had seen, so you'd think he would be one of the busiest people in the town right now, but he seemed rather laid-back, despite the dangers. Granted, with the dangers on the roads, plus the whole demon inquisition thing, there were bound to be less people passing through the town than usual, but still. After Syeena made her own reservations at the front desk, Varriden did likewise, taking the key and going up to the second floor and entering his borrowed room. It was fairly bare, but Varriden didn't intend to stay more than the one night, so it hardly mattered that there wasn't much furniture. Varriden took off his sword and set it lightly against the wall just as Syeena came bursting into the room. Varriden sighed. "While I appreciate someone to chat with, I'd also appreciate it if you at least knocked before kicking the door open. I prefer to be aware of it when I'm about to have company." Syeena, of course, ignored him - I'm beginning to see why she and Hex get along so well, Varriden thought to himself - and spoke of the town having a 'local secret' vibe. "They're certainly going through the trouble of hiding something, that's for certain," Varriden said, taking a seat on the armchair in the room's corner. "For a town literally fenced in by monsters, they're taking it a little too well, if you ask me. But I fail to see what they gain by keeping it hidden. At the very least, it would mean some form of assistance." |

Syeena acknowledged his words, clearly knowing what she did was rude but tact was something she didn't think they had time for . Sorry, but it just was too important to wait on. Besides, I rather not be alone for too long in this place," she said as she closed the door and checked the windows. They seemed safe for the moment. Hex curled up on the bed, possibly on purpose to get under Varriden's skin but Syeena kept to business. "Plus the townfolk seem a bit too... calm despite all the chaos. I don't know. It just doesn't feel natural. I have a confession to make. I didn't just happen to come by, I am sort of here investigating any possible demonic-cult-related activity. It may be directly releated, it may not be. Either way, I came here to investigate." For her ditsy appearance and clear cover with the glasses, she released she had to keep to her act... at least for now. "Um... I mean, its only natural for a enthusiastic reporter like me! Ya know? Ehehe..." she said, making a big deal out of it. It was however growing darker out, evening soon upon them. The best thing to do was question around town. Perhaps even that strange priest again and see what was what. Or perhaps Varriden had any ideas as to what could be a reason behind the village's odd behavior. Outside, the villagers seemed a bit more causal and even quieter as night began to fall. The priest however remained on the chapel steps. Edited by Zaber, Apr 28 2015, 01:57 PM.

Varriden sighed, waiving it off with a hand. "It's alright, and you do have a point - it's not an issue that we can let sit and fester." Syeena also seemed uncomfortable being alone here - noted by her need to close the door and window both - but Varriden didn't think much of it. "I imagine few in this town feel terribly safe on their own with monsters surrounding the town slowly. To be frank, I'm surprised the whole town isn't using the buddy system right now." "You're right, though the townsfolk aren't nearly as concerned as they should be - or rather, their concern seems very lopsided, as they were concerned enough to build a wall to keep the monsters out, but don't care about them otherwise. Either something else is going on, or they have a very high amount of trust in that one wall." Varriden's gaze flicked to the side briefly as he noted Hex curling up on his bed. Varriden didn't reply verbally to that, opting to instead give the cat a slight pat on the head. While the last guy near Hex hadn't faired well, Varriden reasoned he was safe enough with one pat, as the last guy had been trying to assault Syeena, not just chat with her. What did catch Varriden off-guard, though, was that Syeena was a reporter, one come here to investigate demon cultists, no less. "Oh, so you're a reporter. That explains it. And rumors of a demon cult would explain the behavior of the locals, at least somewhat. If they suspect that someone in their town is part of that demon cult, or worse, is responsible for the monsters out there, that would explain why they haven't appealed to the Knights or the Guilds for some form of assistance yet - they're trying to keep it quiet so that the whole town isn't put under suspicion." Varriden looked thoughtful for a moment, then grabbed his greatsword as he stood up. "We need to get a look at these so-called 'monsters' - if they're actually demons, then it means that there might actually be a cultist in town, and the walls might be not only to protect the people, but prevent them from seeing what the monsters truly are." |

(Note: Gonna try to push events forward a bit. ) Mhmm..." Syeena agreed, but was taken aback as she was a reporter. "Oh! Yes of course I am. Ehehe..." Hex just shook her head as she rolled about on the bed, not caring really. Changing the subject, Syeena turned to the door. "Right then! Let's get investigating. Reporting is no different than detective work!" she said and eagerly left the room, encouraging the others to follow. Hex sighed as she pushed herself off the bed and jumped down, following Syeena as best as she could. Seveal hours had past as they hit the streets, and night was just about to fall. They had spoken to several of the villageres, even asking if they seen that boy they had ran into during the trip there, but no one knew him. Plus everyone was a bit too pleasant on the topic. It was like the movie "Pleasantville" but realistic. After searching, they wound up back to the cathedral where they had met the priest. "Ugh... no such luck, but I keep having this bad feeling." Hex said to Varriden. Hex was now resting on Syeena's shoulders, tired from running around with them. At this time however, someone approached. "Hello, young ones. " a voice said. It turned out to be the same priest who had welcomed them into the village. "Are you well. You should settle in for the night. We just are about to close the gates to the town." As the talked, they could hear the large wooden gate being closed, the wood and ropes turning as they shut off the town for the night. Now there was no way in or out unless you could fly. |

Syeena was more than ready to investigate the monsters outside the town's wall, comparing her reporting to detective work. "True enough," Varriden said. "Though I doubt detectives end up having to face off with monsters, and if all goes well, we won't need to, either." Hex jumped off the bed and followed Syeena, Varriden following a short distance behind to avoid stepping on Hex's tail. As they emerged into the streets, the sun was rapidly shrinking in the night sky, night beginning to fall over the town, the last streaks of orange already fading overhead. They ran around, talking to any of the villagers they could find that were still out and about and willing to chat, but none of them knew the boy they'd run into on the way here. And all of them had that 'way too relaxed' vibe coming off them. Eventually, they returned to the cathedral they'd passed when they first entered town some time later. "I've had a 'bad feeling' since we got here, it's just a matter of us trying to find the source of it." Varriden pointed out. That was when one of the villagers approached them of his own accord - the priest who had first bid them greetings when they first got here. He suggested they settle in for the night, as the gates were closing, and sure enough, a significant distance away, there was the muffled boom of the large wooden gates closing, so going out through the front gate to see these monsters was no longer an option. "I appreciate the suggestion - we'll be settling somewhere else shortly," Varriden said. It wasn't even a lie, technically, as they would be settling someplace else in a short time, he just neglected to mention that it would be outside the wall. |

However, the priest seemed strange to Syeena. As the gates were closed and darkness soon hovered over the sky above, she approached him. "Tell me, father... you are one of the town's head leaders right? I mean you must be considered i n high regard. You have been here all this time and you say this is normal behavior for the town?" she asked. The man gave a kind smile to her. He couldn't see her expression behind her thick glasses but he remained calm and replied. "Yes I am." he said. "These affairs have only been going on recently so we have made all the counter measures we could. " Syeena was not satisfied. "And you have not been aware to the strange behavior of the people here. They act as if the demon cult isn't real or never existed. " she riled up, keeping pressure on him. "But out of all of them..." She then turned her gaze up and the now stern look was clear in her eyes! "You are the only one with a type of awareness in this town. Care to explain that?" She demanded in a calm but firm tone. Varriden and Hex would no doubt want to hear an answer. But as they waited, they all would notice something. All the sound in the village went shockingly quiet. Movement and chatter had stopped all together. The eerie quiet was creepy as they would look around. All the villagers in the general area had stopped and stared at them. They seemed even more creepy, as they gazed on. They now no longer looked pleasant, but crossed. A soft chuckle escpaed the priest, as Syeena turned her gaze back to him. "Oh... you poor children. You wandered into the hands of a Shepard... but you should of heed warning.. for wolves are everywhere..." As he spoke, the soft glow of the moon had shown up in the sky. It was then that things began to turn bad. Very Bad! Suddenly, growled and shouts from the people crossed the square. As they would look, they saw their features violently warping! CLaws, fur and wolfish features sprouting out on them, tearing clothing and muscles bulging! Horrified, Syeena looked to the priest. He had remained calm and chuckled softly. Darkness radiated off him as he glared at the 'victims' . "You see... I am a part of the cult. I had come here and infected the people with a lunar curse. Under my control and are very much like me..." Syeena jumped back as his body emitted more darkness and he too began to change. The priestly robes he wore began to crack and rip as his shape grew bigger and his skin became darker. Fur took its place as his eyes glowed red with a feral malice. He had become a black werewolf, wielding darkness magic and a totally different feel to him as oppose to the old man before. "Dogs... Why did it have to be dogs..." Hex mewed as she nudged against Varriden's leg nervously. The werewolves were slowly approaching, drawn in to the scent of new victims. "Get them..." the werewolf priest demon growled, and the others howled in reply. "RUN!!" Syeena cried and they quickly headed for the cathedral. They would have to hide in there and barricade the door! |

Varriden greeted the priest normally enough, but Syeena seemed to have other ideas, asking if the behavior of everyone here was normal for the town. Varriden was mildly confused, as they had asked people about the attitude of the villagers before, but they had never really gotten an answer - he didn't expect the priest to provide one at this point. The priest simply smiled and said that all of this had happened recently, and people were merely adapting. Syeena replied that the entire town was acting like the demon cult was just a myth, of if it didn't exist, despite the warnings and announcements from the Royal Capital. Then Syeena got to her point - that the priest was the only one 'aware' of how everyone was acting. She's right, Varriden thought with realization. We asked the other villagers about the attitude of the town, but never really got a reply. He's the only one that's given a real answer when asked. The priest chuckled, and it seemed abnormally loud. Then Varriden realized - it wasn't loud, it was that all other noise in the town had suddenly come to a stop. No chatter, no nothing. The moon emerged from behind the cloud, and the whole town's populace with the exception of Varriden, Syeena, and Hex began morphing into werewolves, which Hex did not like, given the natural rivalry between cats and dogs. The priest himself warped into a humanoid wolf bearing a cloak and book, before ordering the wolves to attack them. Varriden leapt up and kicked in the church door - bit of a blasphemous thing to do to a church door, but given what was going on here, it had probably seen far worse the past few weeks. Varriden waited for Syeena and Hex to get through, then slammed the door shut, quickly moving down the large wooden bar. "That's probably not going to hold them for long. The other townsfolk are probably just on bar with wild beasts, but the old priest might have magic to get through the door." Varriden said. |
