Fairy Tail Guild RP Current News

Hey everyone, it's me, your Lord and Savior, your Once and Future King, and your new Admin-for-Life Unlimit Sendo. I'm here to drop some turnbuckle-diving elbows and awesome news. There's been some relatively small updates to rulings regarding summon familiars and single summons. Additionally, there's also been a pretty big update in regards to the AP shop which reorganizes it and adds a ton of new stuff. You can find that in the AP Shop section under Item Creation. Check it out.

"Environment does provide the necessary edge from time to time when you're stuck in a pinch," Varriden said with a nod. "Thus why all those guides about combat inevitably include a line or two about 'using your surroundings' - an old line, but it's an old line because it's a useful one. Sort of a rule of thumb about the longevity of combat tactics, if you think about it - there are martial art styles still used by knights and mages today that date back hundreds of years, but if they're still in use, then they're still in use for a reason - they're still effective. The ones that no longer work most people haven't heard about because they most likely died out from disuse."

Razia said that the backalley would do fine, and suddenly he dagger she'd summoned earlier flew out of her belt without her touching it at all, Varriden noting the dagger's movements with his Decipher technique as it did all sorts of tricks in the air between the two mages - flips, spins, twirls, etc. Razia explained that levitating the dagger was easier than moving something like a polearm around. "Makes sense, what with the difference in weight and the larger size of the polearm," Varriden said, nodding again. Then it seemed that Razia wanted a second demonstration of Archive just as she had done with her Ex-quip magic. She moved the dagger to eye level, in front of Varridan, with the handle facing him, asking him if he could catch it before it hit the ground, and released it.

Varriden glanced down at the dagger with a slight gesture and the word "Stop.", and halfway down to the ground, it suddenly froze in mid-air, as if it had been a video on a screen and just been paused. Varriden leaned over and grabbed the dagger by the hilt, straightening back up. "While I'm flattered as your estimation of my ability, what you've just seen is a slight drawback of Archive, at least at the moment." Varriden tossed the dagger a few inches into the air to give it a half-spin, carefully catching it by the flat of the blade before offering it back to Razia. "While I can learn almost any number of new spells merely by observing - like I did you weapon technique just now - it takes time for the information to process in a way that allows me to use it. The time it takes isn't terribly long, but it can take awhile. I've been working on shortening it so I can use learned spell immediately as you intended, but I'm not quite there yet."

As was the trend, Razia continued to enjoy nearly everything that came out of Varriden’s mouth. He was the first other mage she’d met with a major appreciation for tactics. Xiayu had understood basics at least, but battle strategy was something that the exquip mage prided herself on. She was far too new to the actual fighting part to hold an outstanding edge against anyone there, but she’d put in enough time at the library to have a head for strategy. Seeing that in someone else was oddly reassuring.

The demo proceeded rather uneventfully. Apparently Archive wasn’t as instantaneous as she had believed it to be, but that mattered not. Razia grabbed the handle of the dagger and resheathed it at her side without bothering to look. It was a simple enough motion that it didn’t really demand her attention. Instead, her focus was given to Varriden’s words as he spoke about the limits of Archive.

”No great power comes without its weaknesses. It’s true for our enemies, and for ourselves as well. Take the demo I just gave you for example. The reason that it took place so close is because the limit of my control is about 4 meters. Anything farther away than that, and I lose any sort of control. I can accurately send a weapon at something up to about 10 meters away, but beyond that I need to break out a gun.

Enough with the back alley though.”
She turned back towards the way they had come, and walked towards the main street. ”This is Lamia Scale turf, and you’re a walking library. Feel like pulling out the guide book and showing a girl the sights?”

Though Varriden might not have known it, what he had just witnessed was a true rarity with Razia. Many of her choices in life, from the way she dressed to her tone of voice, were done to take attention away from her gender. She wanted to be seen as one of the guys generally. Despite that, she’d just openly played the “I’m a girl” card. This was the kind of stuff that was reserved for those she genuinely trusted. Between the love for books, knack for conversation, and generally pleasant demeanor, the Archive Mage had already won her over.

Varriden had a mind for tactics, Razia wasn't wrong about that, but it wasn't the usual thing of a fighter just being a natural for tactics - not that Varriden didn't have a knack for it - but that with Archive, he could only use his 'borrowed' spells every so often, not nearly as rapid-fire as some mages could cast their own spells, so he had to think very carefully before he did any spell casting - not just which spell to use, but how to use it. Even with the falling dagger just now, he had thought of perhaps three different ways he could have stopped the dagger's fall that didn't involve Razia's weapon levitation technique - one was what he had used, the Stop technique that halted inorganic matter, the others being a shield designed to prevent solid material from passing through, while the last had been the most complex, a precision pair of water jets to 'bounce' the dagger back up to catching height. The key was picking the right one, as afterward, he wouldn't be able to use any for a short time.

Razia took the dagger back and resheathed it without looking, the sign of someone practiced with the weapon. Razia explained that she could control the weapon to about a 4 meter distance with accuracy, but that she lost precision after that unless she was throwing it, and even that was limited to about 10 meters. "Still, most fights, if melee weapons are your thing, you'll ideally be close already, so if they try to leap back to avoid a strike, they should still be in range of your technique - if not the direct control distance, then at least within throwing range."

They moved back into the main streets, and Razia, surprisingly, asked if he'd be willing to give a tour of the city, since it was Lamia Scale's 'turf', and she wasn't wrong on that. "I had nothing else pressing to do today, so I suppose I can. To be perfectly frank, though, I haven't explored much of Belladona myself - usually I spent the bulk of my time in Empyrea Academy or the libraries in the guild. Belladona itself? Not as familiar to me," Varriden said with a shrug.

As always, Varriden made good points. ”Fair fair. That’s why I’m not really too worried about it. My abilities have held up well enough for the things I’ve had to deal with. If I can’t go head to head with a sword, I do have a couple guns I can break out. Being trained in both of those covers the range shortfall on that technique fairly well.”

Though his knowledge on magic was great, it seemed that Varriden spent too much of his time indoors to be the world’s best tour guide. Razia could sympathize. If she had had her currently outlook while growing up, she probably would’ve been much the same. Ah well. She’d found her ways through enough cities without any help to have a pretty good sense of direction. A guide would’ve been nice, but she could manage without one just fine.

Without any real direction, they strolled through the streets. Their path mostly stayed within the busy area where all the shops were. It seemed that the tour would have to be cut short though. Shouts pierced through the normal noises of city life. ”Someone stop them.” “Thief!” ”Someone do something!” A group of cloaked figures had burst out of a shop. They all carried sacks that were, based on the yelling, full of stolen goods.

”I think that’s our cue Varriden.” The thugs were heading right for them. It was a big crew, six in all, but for the initial set of strikes, the mages had the element of surprise on their side. Razia waited for them to draw near. They tried to rush past her, but one of them found an unbudging arm in the way of his windpipe. Clothesline were a classic, but effective move. She could’ve killed him right then and there if she had just used the dagger, but that wasn’t her style. That was all that was needed to take down the first thug. His head met pavement, and the lights went right out. One down, and five to go.

Razia mentioned that she was trained in both guns and swords, using one for melee combat and the other when melee combat wasn't the best idea, or if she needed to engage a foe from a distance. "Well, there we go, then, helps cover that problem nicely." Varriden said.

Razia didn't seem to mind that Varriden didn't know the city terribly well, content to merely wander through the walkways and paths aimlessly, just seeing the sights. The sights, however, got lively very quickly, as suddenly, the air was filled with shouts of anger, yelling cries of 'thief' and other similar outbursts. A moment later, a group of cloaked figures carrying bags of varying proportions burst out of a shop like bats out of a cave.

"I believe you're right, Razia," Varriden said, drawing his greatsword off his back as he ran at the group. While Razia clotheslined one, Varriden ran at the next, ducking under a somewhat clumsy swipe before belting the thug in the gut with the hilt of his greatsword, winding the guy as the thug fell onto the ground, his bag spilling open and sending random objects skittering across the pavement. Another one ran at Varriden, either intending to deal with a threat to their thief or perhaps to get a bit of payback for the other thug who was on the ground wheezing. Bit of a mistake on his part, as Varriden planted his greatsword in the ground and pulled the hilt back, the thug crashing face-first into the flat of the blade and probably bruising his noise in the process.

Razia was not in the mood to mess around. With a mental command, she willed her dagger out and sent it flying into the leg of one of the other thieves. They still hadn’t really figured out that someone was actually trying to stop them, but the dagger to the leg seemed to have done that pretty nicely. That was fine. They were going to get trounced all the same. A dark purple swirl of magic covered Razia as the Ranger’s Armor formed around her. A pair of longswords formed in her hands as well, and she quickly set to work using them.

As soon as her requip was complete, Razia charged at a third thief, making sure to step on the junk of the one she’d just hit with the knife while en route. Rather unexpectedly, given the first two she’d downed, this one actually stopped her attack. Her twin longswords met a pair of steel gauntlets and failed to bite through them. Hell, they failed to even push his arms in an inch. This guy seemed to be the tough one in the crowd… or at least one of them.

For nearly a minute straight, the two of them went back and forth. Razia bobbed and weaved, dodging the attacks that came her way. He was no worse off. Every time her blades swung in, he caught it with his armored hands. Neither could land a hit on the other at first, but Razia couldn’t keep up with him forever. Though her technique was good, he was in better shape, and that gave him the advantage in the long fight. Eventually, she failed to dodge a punch to the gut, and she doubled over in pain from the force of his blow.

He thought he had her, but he was wrong. Razia was trained in hand to hand as well, and even with the air knocked out of her, she knew what the follow up attack was. Given that he was more of a boxer, it had to be an uppercut. The thing with uppercuts is that the body always moves in a predictable way, and there’s a hell of a windup. Knowing that, all she had to do was stick her sword forward at just the right time and the thief found the point of a blade ever so slightly sticking into his throat. He had lost this round.

Varriden glanced over at the sound of a yell - Razia had sent one of her daggers whipping around to stick itself into the leg of one of the thieves. "See, I told you that you'd probably be close enough when you used it!" Varriden said with a slight chuckle, pulling his greatsword out of the pavement where he'd stabbed it into the ground, taking a step back as the second thug who'd attacked him staggered to his feet, attempting a groggy swing at Varriden but failing to land a hit. His impact with the greatsword had left him worse for wear - no cuts, lucky for him, but there was a trickle of blood coming out of one nose, and it looked like the collision had rattled his brains in his skull, as he looked unsteady all of a sudden.

"You'll.....you'll pay for that, you bastard!" the thug said, seeming to struggle somewhat to get the words out. He ran at Varriden, drawing a small dagger from his belt as he did, but unfortunately, Varriden disarmed him by swatting his arm from below, before elbowing him in the gut, the thug falling to the pavement for the second time in as many minutes.

"Look on the bright side," he said to the thug as the dagger fell back down, clanging harmlessly off the street, "Unlike my friend over here, I didn't feel the need to hit any sensitive spots to knock you over."

Hearing the clang of metal, Varriden glanced over at Razia - she seemed to have run into the one thug in the group that wasn't going down in two hits. Razia had pulled armor and a pair of swords out of somewhere - her Ex-quip magic, Varriden guessed - but it wasn't enough to get past the thug she was up against.

With the armored thug being the only one left, Varriden waited and watched for a few moments, not wanting to intrude on her battle when she didn't need help, at least not yet - she wasn't gaining much ground, but she wasn't losing much, either. Besides, in a melee fight, he was more likely to distract her, making her have to be careful not to hit him, than provide enough assistance to counter that distraction. It looked like things had taken a turn for Razia when she got a blow to the gut, and Varriden grabbed his sword, ready to intervene, but when the armored thug swung in for the finisher, Razia got her blade at his throat, and he stopped moving.

Varriden clapped for the performance with a smile. "Well played. I admit, I was worried for a moment when he got a hit on your gut, but you did well."

The armored thug spat onto the street. "Lucky, that's all."

Varriden turned and looked at the thug. "Perhaps she is lucky." Varriden said, stomping one foot into the ground, a rift opening in the earth beneath the armored thug, the thug falling into it with a yelp before it snapped almost-shut, trapping the armored thug up to his neck, only his head and the tips of his armored fingers sticking out above the ground. "Unlike you."

Varriden glanced back at Razia. "I think this can be called handled at this point. Let's keep exploring."

As they walked off, the armored thug yelled, "Hey! You can't just leave me here like this!"

Varriden stopped, looking over his shoulder at the near-buried thug. "You know what? You're right. I'll have the local knights come dig you out."

Varriden turned and kept walking, the only sound behind him being the sound of the armored thug going "....shit."

Though the thief was stupid enough to try and get away with stealing stuff in a city that housed a guild, he knew when he was beaten. Sure, he blamed the loss on luck, but he knew better than to try anything with a blade to his throat. With the use of another spell he had stored away, Varriden dropped the only threatening thug down into the Earth so that only his head was exposed. Seemed fitting to Razia.

That was one problem dealt with handily. Between the two of them, dealing with the thieves had been pretty easily. Without a care in the world, they both set back on their stroll through the city. But there was one thing that was eating away at Razia’s mind. A question, burning to be asked. ”So, what does it take to get into Lamia Scale?” Unable to restrain herself, the question had snuck out. If Varriden was any indication, then that guild was where she wanted to sign up. Fairy Tail seemed too focused on battle, and Blue Pegasus was too peaceful. Lamia Scale on the other hand, they seemed like a good fit. They were intellectual, but not afraid to get their hands dirty. That’s what she had heard about them, and Varriden seemed to fit the bill. With any luck, he’d think she was the right sort.

Razia was never one to leave her intentions unclear though. She clarified why she was asking before Varriden even got a chance to answer. ”I’m not the best mage the world has ever seen, but that’s why I want to join. I want to surround myself with people stronger and smarter than me so I can grow strong enough to make a real difference out there.” She’d put all her cards on the table with this one, and her fate was in Varriden’s hand. If he thought she was Lamia Scale material, then her world was going to change in an instant. The life of a guild mage was a different one. It opened new doors all around her. With guild membership, she could actually get jobs, rather than just happening upon trouble through dumb luck. Even better, it meant she could actually have a reliable income. That’d be a lovely change. If not though… well… she’d just have to look into changing his mind.

They walked away from the site where the thieves had burst from the shop, letting the local knights, who had finally arrived on the scene, arrest the fallen thugs, hauling them to their feet as they put handcuffs on them, except for the armored thug that was still buried up to his neck, two of the knights breaking out shovels and beginning to dig to get him out. Varriden could have reversed the spell to release the thug, and save the knights the trouble, but he didn't want the armored thus capitalizing on the sudden freedom from the earth below.

As they walked, Razia asked him a question out of nowhere - what the requirements were to get into Lamia Scale, which surprised Varriden slightly - only slightly, as she clearly had an interest in magic and books, judging from how they met not an hour prior to this, but more that she suddenly wished to be part of a guild. "What does it take to join?" Varriden said. "Well, not a whole lot of requirements - being a mage, first of all, but that much is obvious. The other, and while this is unofficial, is a liking for magical knowledge, as Lamia Scale houses more information about magic than any other guild out there." Except perhaps Grimoire Heart, Varriden thought, but given their dark methods of getting such information and what it entails, that doesn't really count.

"If you go to the guild and ask, I'm sure they'll let you join. You can name-drop me if you want, though I'm not sure I have enough influence with the guild to make my support alone a factor in deciding if you can join up, that's still up to the others back at the guild. If you do go, though, I wish you the best of luck, Lamia Scale's a fun guild to be in, and an informative one, too - their libraries are rather impressive." Varriden said with a smile.

It had been an interesting encounter. That was for sure. What had started off as an innocent question to a fellow avid reader had developed into much more. A little bit of “you show me yours and I’ll show you mine,” a little bit of combat, and a chance to join a guild. Stuff like this was why Razia was willing to randomly introduce herself to strangers. It made things more interesting if she did that on a regular basis.

Just on the off chance that she got denied entry, she wanted to make sure that Varriden wouldn’t forget about her. The exquip mage used a cantripped version of requip to pull out the contents of one pocket from her normal outfit. The book she’d bought earlier had been stored in the back left pocket, and that appeared neatly in her hand. She tossed the book towards her latest ally, confident that he needed it more than she did. ”There’s some real good tips on Weapon Levitation in there. I already got what I needed out of that one in the store, so it’s better off in your hands now.” It was a good parting gift she figured. If Varriden wanted to learn Weapon Levitation, even if he could just from watching it, the book would definitely help him master it.

With that settled, there was only one thing left that Razia really wanted to do. Go apply to Lamia Scale. ”Well, I’m gonna go try my luck and see if I can get past the front door then. I think I’ve got what it takes, so hopefully next time I see you, I’ll have a new tattoo.” Even in the face of something that worried her quite a bit, the exquip mage was able to do it with a smile and a laugh. She always tried to stay upbeat when she could, and hopefully Varriden would remember her that way until they next met. Wish me luck!” That said, she turned and headed off towards the Guild Hall. It was time to try and start a new chapter in her life.
