Karen let out an exasperated sigh. She'd just arrived in Magnolia, one of the larger cities in the kingdom of Fiore, and had found already found herself paralyzed with indecision; having gotten all of the necessities out of the way -- that is to say, having secured a place to sleep and bathe -- Karen was faced with a choice of how to spend her remaining hours of daylight. She'd finally narrowed her possibilities to one of two options; she could either spend the evening at the local bathhouse, hiding away from the world in pruney bliss, or take a long walk through the park in an unquestionably healthier -- but also less fun -- course of action. She'd be touring the city tomorrow, so it wasn't as though either of these opportunities would be lost; this of course meant that neither of these choices really had any meaningful weight to them. With no pressing reason to choose one over the other, Karen had spent the better part of the hour devising some means of making this arbitrary decision without having to feel like she'd made the wrong choice. Magnolia's many streets and buildings were only broken up by a series of canals, crisscrossing the great city and dividing it into smaller sectors; it was on one of the bridges that allowed passage over the canals that Karen now found herself, and it was on this bridge that she'd resolved to make her decision. "Boats often move supplies up and down this canal," Karen had decided, after some idle observations earlier that day, "So, If I merely count the number of boats passing under this bridge within a 25 minute period, I should be able to reach a conclusion based on whether an odd number or an even number makes its way through...and ill only waste a maximum of 25 minutes.". It had been 25 minutes since Karen had put her plan into action; she'd seen exactly one boat approach the canal, before turning and traveling through a different route. Karen's earlier sigh was now accompanied by a yawn. "I guess I remembered why I avoid trying to invent weird methods to solve problems" she thought. Karen, now bored out of her mind for having watched an empty canal for nearly a half hour, looked idly towards the direction of the park. She slumped over on the railing, head resting in her arms. The one boat that had almost passed under the bridge could almost have counted, which to Karen meant that an Odd number of boats had passed. Mustering all her energy, Karen looked towards the park again, and sighed. "Park wins by a technicality," she said aloud. Karen smiled, and headed in the opposite direction of the park. "However, this has been a tiring endeavor," she quipped, her mood much improved, "So i'm afraid that ruling has been overturned!" Karen skipped along, and then remembered something very important. "There should have been no competition at all," Karen thought, smiling widely. "After all, I can't practice unless i've got water... and privacy." |

Alejandro heaved a great sigh of contentment. He was currently having a pretty good day. The sun was shining, the birds chirping, the children playing, and best of all, no buildings were exploding. I hate when that happens, Alejandro thought as he squirmed slightly to provide his body with maximum comfort. He was currently laying down with his arms behind his head, in a gondola that was floating down one of Magnolia’s rivers. Alejandro had no real reason for being in Magnolia. He had been looking for a change of scenery, and this city seemed like it had potential. He had never been so right. The bars were fun, the people enjoyed street music, and the women were certainly caliente. Alejandro would smile as his visor protected his eyes, from the bright sun. I like it here. A few minutes later, his gondola would continue its slow toward no where in particular. Suddenly, an older male’s voice barked out “Hey you!, You can’t be on there!” Looking up from his brief moment of sleep, he would see an older fellow, who looked like he was in a pretty bad mood. Smiling at the fellow, Alejandro would say in reply “Whatever you say, amigo.” Taking his time, Alejandro would slowly begin to stretch his arms and legs in order to get the blood flowing again. Reaching down, he would pick up what appeared to be a guitar case and start to look around the small sea vessel. “Hmm...I’m pretty sure this barco had some oars.” After a few more second of turning around and searching, he would finally find a long shaft of wood with a paddled end. Placing his guitar down and lifting it with a bit of effort, Alejandro would swing it into the water, and begin to row the gondola towards a sidewalk. After a few more minutes of rowing and grunting, Alejandro would be close enough to the shore, that he would, while grunting even more place the oar back into its place, grab his guitar case, and leap onto shore. Ignoring the old fellow’s remarks of “Wait, what about the boat?!”, Alejandro would begin to stroll through the non watered streets of Magnolia. After a good fifteen minutes of strolling without really knowing where he was going, he would come across a park. “Magnífico!” Alejandro would exclaim as he moved to sit down on one of the more grassy areas. He would then open his guitar case, remove his prize, tune the strings, and finally let his fingers do their magic. The song he played was one with some changes in the tempo. It would start off slow then slowly become faster and more rythmic. From the positive looks he got from the passers by, he had made a good choice. |
