Mission Link Mission Request So for once, Kathryn wasn't tasked with doing anything untoward - this was a fairly legitimate mission for once. No more blowing up of a school probably still populated with children and teaching staff, so this wasn't anywhere near short of a massacre, and she wasn't tasked with blowing up an educational establishment in a well-populated city this time. No, this time, she was actually tasked with protecting the city from something, and she probably wouldn't want to know what beforehand. The mission slip she grabbed from the board wasn't anywhere near as detailed as she would hope for and come to expect - it was simply a "Go to Belladonna, find this building, meet this researcher, protect the city" sort of thing - she had no clue of the researcher's name, she had no clue as to where the research facility was in the entire expanse of the bustling city, and she had no clue what to look out for in the city that she had to protect against. Luckily for her it wouldn't be immediately apparent to her that she would have to protect the people from a freaking gargoyle, let alone three. She knew, however, that the request was sent to more guilds than just hers - probably a good idea considering the researchers at the facility might need more help than would have been rendered by just one guild alone. But of course, in a better-policed city like Belladonna, she kept the reminder that she should hide her guild identity at all times at the top of her head - if they ever found out how she was implicit with the events in Trillium, they'll drag her to custody in chains. She had a bad impression of the law, but she knew it wouldn't be wise to tempt their well-known long arm. Thankfully the mission slip would have a picture of the research facility Kathryn would have to make her way to, and she found it in less time than she would have spent walking all around the main streets of Belladonna. Heck, it was barely a few blocks away from the entrance to the city she came in from. The visible panic of the researcher at the doorway, as well as the bare pedestals flanking said doorway, pretty much said it all already. |

Once again Amaryllis was being asked to aid someone linked to the city. When she had been a lower ranked mage she seemed to be able to pick and choose her missions as she wished but as of late it seemed the guild master thought of her as an errand girl who they could just send out to pick up the pieces that others left’; sure she was paid for her aid and the missions weren’t anything too farfetched but still she dislikes not being able to pick and choose, it took out the sweetness she had felt originally when she joined. “Still, at least it isn’t too far away.” She said peering at the basic information that had been scrawled down on a piece of paper for her; it was a little more than she had last time. Making her way to the facility was something different for the young mage, she had kept her exploration of the city to near her own home and the guild, she had felt little need to get to grasps with the full view of the city just yet but this was outside what she had expected. Having to descend the height of the city she was able to see all the strata; her own one being very close to the upper most peaks of the soaring city, she had passed the more upmarket middle class areas followed by smaller more crammed in homes and then streets that seemed to be made of of cardboard boxes and scrap metal; it was the sort of place that a young woman could be expected to be mugged; but with her weapon and wots the Lamia scale mage had little worry about that sort of thing. “Almost there.” She sighed to herself, picking up one of her feet to make sure nothing was stuck to the base of her heel, the floor had an odd permeating odour and felt slick to the touch. Amaryllis never expected such a place to exist in this sort of city, never mind having to find herself here. |

The sad state of affairs at the research facility, including the horrible conditions it was surrounded by, kinda made Kathryn feel sad. This was a more legit educational establishment than the one she blew up, but even the one in Trillium felt more accommodating with its cleanliness and environment than this. This? She would have thought it would have been a better use of the amount of explosives she and Monkey used in their previous mission to blow up this establishment instead, to end their misery right there and then. The city wasn't exactly the spotless bastion of scientific, magical and technological advancement it was touted as being - this was a city that was clearly segregated based on classes, with everything such a city would need - even the slums. What a pity. She felt like her city had done a better job of doing that - Coreopsis, the Floating Love-Town, was arguably better kept than this. The squalor she found herself standing amongst was an unpleasant feeling, no doubt, but she was just glad she didn't live in these conditions. The researcher, desperate as he was, took the initiative to meet Kathryn halfway, at the pavement leading up to the facility. As he spotted the mission slip he most definitely gave to the guilds, a look of relief, although still somewhat pensive, was evident on his face. "Thank goodness you're here." And as Kathryn would hand over the mission slip in acknowledgement of her taking up the mission, Kathryn could only make an assumption based on what she could very well see in the doorway - the bare pedestals. "Animated statues?" With a somewhat fearful nod of his head, he confirmed it. "Gargoyles." Thankfully she wasn't the only one taking up the mission, though. There was another individual walking towards the facility - her get-up indicating very well that her class wasn't anywhere near as low as the area they found themselves in the middle of. |

“Can you spare a few?” A man said wearily to Amaryllis from the side of the street, he seemed to down on his luck that he wasn’t even in possession of a tin can to beg with. Taking pity on the man, Amaryllis pulled out her purse from her pocket and started to count out a good amount of money, enough for him to eat well for a week and clean himself up. But before she could hand over the money, the man and another had pulled out of the shadows and surrounded her, hoping to take advantage of a young rich woman found in the wrong part of town. “Just give over all your money and nothing bad will happen, come on.” The man she was about to give to said, revealing a knife from a pocket, she could make out the figure behind her and expected the same sort of weapon. Placing the money back in her purse she dropped it the ground in a submissive manner and simply stared at the man in front of her. She felt the man behind her smile, it felt wicked and as dirty as the surrounding area. As the beggar bent down to collect the purse, Amaryllis responded with a quick jab to his neck with her hand fan, taking some mercy on him by using the blunt side, As the man fell to the ground she opened the floor below the other with her magic, sending him falling down to the level below. She wasn’t sure what could be below this section but she was sure that whatever it was it would keep him busy for a while and teach him a lesson not to mug people. Picking up her purse she continued onwards to the facility. It was a rundown place to match the area they were in and it surprised Amaryllis that such a place could afford to hire mages to help them, but the again they were the sort of questions she was told not to ask but loved to solve going along with things. Pushing open the door to the facility she was greeted with a few figures. “Hello?” She said cautiously, taking a moment to make sure she was indeed in the correct area and not in another trap. “I am Amaryllis Reynoldae, The guild Lamia Scale has sent me to aid with whatever situation is happening here. May I be so front to ask what that is?” She needed the details before getting down to things, and she wanted to avoid staying in this area for too long, she was strong but she was not infallible. |

Oh, of course. When in a mugger zone, never forget the muggers. Basically, the thing to do is to play it calm and just go along with the demands of the muggers first. When they're done with their deed and everything, go full fucking nelson on them if you so desire. Especially since this was pretty much considered a slum, the policing was comparatively lax. Otherwise why the hell would you see muggers here? This is one step away from being completely lawless. The fact of the matter was that the interior of the facility was as dingy as the neighbourhood outside was squalid - flickering fluorescent light bulbs, having not even been changed to the recently-improved light lacrimae, and what would appear to be rather outdated computer lacrimae as well. Nevertheless, it was quite apparent to Kathryn that what was being pursued inside wasn't anything shady or anything. It was a legitimate scientific endeavour, however with the less than ideal conditions within the facility itself you wouldn't be so off as to suspect something afoot. "We operate on a shoestring budget," the researcher had told Kathryn before the other girl had arrived. "We have a retail outlet for fashion and accessories in the shopping belt being run by our associates so that we can make ends meet here." And as the other girl entered, with a rather straightforward introduction and everything, the researcher would be rather thrown off by the confidence the new arrival exuded. Assurance in herself, at the very least. "Gargoyles on the pedestal outside the doorway became animated. Metre-tall." It was not too long before the researcher led them further into the facility. He would show them the formula they were working on - a formula for a new lacrima that would animate objects. Accidents happen, and sometimes you screw up bad. Kathryn could do the 2+2 here. "The formula doesn't give them a rigid bone structure," the researcher would go on to explain, "They are mobile with an exoskeleton - the "skin", if you will, is pretty much the same in texture and strength as the stones used to make the gargoyle statues. Probably thinner." "Brute force might be a good way to go. Although try to avoid melee combat as much as possible, they have claws to defend themselves with." Kathryn nodded in acknowledgement, turning her head slightly to pay attention to her to-be mission partner. She was sensing for any sign of trepidation. Kathryn wasn't sure whether she had to take charge, or if her mission partner had as much of a sense of responsibility as her. |

Luckily for amaryllis they got down to business quickly, she had never been a fan of the long winded explanation where there were no definite answers. “So I take it you have hired more than myself?” She asked, giving an inquisitive look to her rather different looking partner for this task. By the sounds of what they were talking about it was a science experiment gone wrong, their limited funds meant that they were likely to cut corners and also they had a lack of security to keep these things in place, it was something she had heard time and time again, people took more than they could handle and when things went wrong they ended up thinking that guild mages could solve all of their problems. “A few questions before I… We start. Is there a certain area they would stay within or are they rather free with their movement? As gargoyles can they fly or at least climb up the level? And are there any other marking characteristics or things to help track them?” Belladonna was a more modern city but she disliked the idea that they could move outside of the area and make this a wild goose chase or hide themselves in a place where there were a good deal of other gargoyles. Kind of phasing the scientist out she finally turned to her partner for this mission and introduced herself formally, it was a little overdue but better late than never. Nodding her head slightly “I am Ama, A Lamia scale mage and yourself?” She was mainly curious about the name, she disliked not knowing some cardinal information about people, their name being important to a degree if she needed to address or quote something about them, the rest so far was inconsequential. Her main aim was to finish this as quickly as possible. Turning back to the scientist she smiled slightly, pulling her fan from her side. “Well if there isn’t anything else of importance we will start, I take it if any of the lacherima within the constructs survive, you’ll want them back. Correct?” Turning to exist the facility she slowed her walking until she heard the answer and she was sure the partner for this mission as following. If they were moving around, the sooner they tracked them down the better. |

Kathryn would nod at the other girl's initial query. Kathryn wouldn't be caught dead in a backwater like this if she didn't have business to do here - her fashion style, at the very least, meant that she could afford some luxuries while doing her thing, which was mainly to get the jobs done for her guild. Nothing more, nothing less. If it necessitated her killing people? So be it. She would be, pretty much, one of the more thorough people out there for hire. When it was a job to be a hero? Not so much her cup of tea, but she'd do it nonetheless. Money is money. Jobs are jobs. Nothing more, nothing less. The design of her outfit provided her neck and lower face with enough protection from the cold and the wind of the coming winter. It would prove to be a damn good idea, considering the thermostat was dropping every single day. It was a rather chilly 10 degrees C outside, and even in a city as active as Belladonna the pollution in the air wouldn't do much to help keep the warmth in the city. "The local gate guards have been informed. There's little to no chance of them escaping the perimeter of the city. The higher levels shouldn't face any problems - their climbing ability is impaired by their short legs." So essentially, their hunt was limited to the lower level of Belladonna. Not too bad - wouldn't be that bad of a wild gargoyle chase. And as the other girl would turn to her and directly introduce herself (because she had already introduced herself pretty much the moment she stepped in), Kathryn would nod in acknowledgement, and reply. "Kathryn," she would say. "My guild's not in the area." That was vague enough. And reasonably tactful, by Kathryn at the very least giving an idea of the nature of her guild and everything. "The lacrimae probably won't survive - there's only one with the full lacrima, maybe the others have shards. They might survive, they might not survive. If they survive, good, best case scenario is that you find a way to get them back. If they don't, we'll just have to take it as a lesson in experimental safety." So essentially, this was just damage limitation. Kathryn would nod in acknowledgement, following Ama out the door. The lower level of Belladonna was rather expansive, though - it wouldn't be an easy task, but they couldn't go much farther. |

Amaryllis didn’t feel bothered to look to much into her partner, as long as she could hold herself in the situations they would counter down here then there was little issue, “Time to get down to business, We can split up if ned be, but for now I think it’d be better to look for some trace of them coming through here.” Ama thought there would be at least some trace of them coming through, she didn’t think that the people down here would forget creatures walking through or that stone constructs wouldn’t mark the ground. The floor below was still slick and she could see the marks from earlier where her heels had impressed against the grim surface but little else, the thought then flared up within her. “Follow me briefly.” She said to her partner, walking along the ‘street’ and backtracking the way she had come in earlier on in the day, it didn’t take long for Ama to reach her destination, on the side of the street there was a ratty looking man lying face down into the floor, his breathing slow and steady but bump starting to form across his back from where he had been hit. “Wake up.” Amaryllis said with some force, the man giving little reaction in his blacked out state, sighing to herself she placed the tip of her heel against his back and started slowly but with increasing pressure pushing down on his back. “One moment.” She said smiling slightly to her partner as she attempted to wake her potential mugger from earlier on. “AHH!” The man said screaming out of shock rather than pain, Ama however kept her heel on his back. “Hello again.” It took the man a few seconds to realise what was happening and a few more to realise who Amaryllis was. The fear on his face quickly took over as his panic increased. Pressing down harder on his back she brought him back to the situation. “Don’t hurt me, please don’t hurt me.” He pleaded, “Have you seen some stone construct walk past?” She asked, his confusion was clear but she asked again, “Have you seen a stone construct come through here before you tried to mug me?” “No, no no!” he said in a panicked but truthful fashion, Picking her heel from the man she turned to face the other mage with her, “It looks like we may have to back track, any ideas?” |

"Their exoskeletons are made of stone. They'll have significant mass - if they want to cover distances fast they'll have a pretty bad turning radius. Considering as the area around has narrow alleyways it would probably be a good idea if we check for damage in the area. To turn they might skid at a corner before possibly hitting a structure in order to change their direction. Skid marks, and possible structural damage." Ever had a car chase where the guys have to floor it to evade the cops? They drift around corners. This was essentially what they were up against, but they didn't have an unlimited expanse of space to cover, so they got that thing going for them. Because it was apparent that the gargoyles were out to cause damage and destruction, it wasn't too much to assume that they would just run all around and smash things up just because. Nevertheless, they had to start somewhere. The lower level of the city could be divided into four quadrants, though - an easier way of searching the entire city for the gargoyles. It was a somewhat circular area - a low-lying area as well. So if you stood at the centre and looked around at a high enough elevation, you could probably see what was going on in a lot of places at once. "Let's split the lower level up. I'll take the northern half, you take the southern half. That alright with you?" And as Kathryn waited for a response from her mission partner, she would totally stand in anticipation and prepare to kick herself off the ground - she had a flight tech, after all. And this ain't cheating. Although just for the record, she didn't activate the flight tech in this post. She would be able to see rather well if there was any commotion down at the street level if she went up to as high as was necessary. She just hoped that she could get in touch with her partner if she ever found them in the sector she was covering. She swore she should have gone to the communications lacrimae shop at the higher level before starting the mission, though. Talking through the lacrimae would have made the task much easier. Could she still head up and get them now? Maybe, maybe not. Edited by Levvins, Nov 16 2014, 10:07 AM.
