The Dragon Slayer stalked the treeline in search of his mark. The prey was ever elusive. Naturally, he was not a hunter by trade. For much of his life, he was a thief. But, one year ago, in the depths of the misty Lancarri Jungle, Artorius had learned what it was to be a hunter. He was a city-boy, so being dropped in the jungle meant he had to learn what it took to survive. He remembered the shoddy wooden spears he carved from jungle wood branches, the insatiable pain of hunger in his gut, and that remarkably satisfying feeling of a successful catch. Yet, the skills to hunt were not much different than the skills required to steal. Stay to the shadows, make every movement silent and have purpose, and be cognizant of every little detail in your periphery. His mark was somewhere in the Lavender Forest. Forty square miles of trees and wildlife. It wasn't going to be easy tracking his target here, but rumor has that it was certainly well worth it. However, that of course begs the question what the man was after. Pork. What? You didn't think Artorius was here to kill Bambi's mom, did you? Anyway, not just any pork, a big nasty boar. Specifically, a rare type of boar that lived only in the heart of the Lavender Forest. Its tusks were prized as a pristine ivory source, and its hide made a good leather source. But, above all, its meat made really damn good bacon. And Artorius loves his bacon, as any good man should. So, you're telling me Artorius went all this way to kill a pig and get some bacon? Wouldn't be the first time, that's for sure. Though, given how elusive this beast was it be some journey to find it, but surely one that was well worth it. At least, he hoped. A hand gloved in black leather brushed aside a stray branch that impeded his path before wiping sweat off his brow with the back of his hand. Autumn had not yet reached this part of the kingdom, and he found himself in a fit of warmth as the rays of the sun bore down, penetrating the lavender and violet canopy of the forest that surrounded him. Dead leaves crunched beneath his brown leather boots, and he could hear animals scurrying in fright. That wasn't his concern though, the beast he was after was particularly aggressive. If he stumbled upon it, it would let itself be known. Still, Artorius was having his doubts. "If what Sachio was telling me about this damned boar turning into awesome bacon turns out to be wrong... may his bacon forever turn to shards of glass in his mouth." A serious threat for certain but, for a man of his tastes, bacon is an important necessity. Edited by Mazohyst, Oct 1 2014, 12:45 PM.

Snow had been sent into the Forest for a rather specific reason. Not that she didn't already haunt the trees here, honing her skills with her now when time away from the guild allowed. This was very specific though. It seemed there was a particular sort of meat in here which was simply begging to be found. According to the person who had relayed the tale, it was a special kind of boar; useful in many ways. But the one that interested her the most was its fabled flavor as a food source. They had told her that it was akin to Ambrose of the gods, mealy in your mouth, halfway kill you with happiness good. That, coupled with her natural curiosity, had been more than enough reason to send her into the Forest this morning. She couldn't be certain, of course, that the creature they spoke of actually existed. Not until she went looking at any rate. The sun beat down, making the morning uncomfortably warm already. She had her bow out, just in case, and had caught a form of bait while she stalked through the trees. She was good at hunting, good at moving in near perfect silence and spotting prey before it spotted her. She had been careful, as she moved, not to break branches, or even rustle the grass much as she passed. For now she stood still, her eyes trained on a water source which ran through the midst of the wood. She didn't think there were many creatures which could go for a full day without a drink, but the river bank was rather long, and she could just as easily miss it as find it. It was usually about timing and patience. Or so experience said. Of course this could be an unearthly creature, or an eldrich one, and she could be underestimating it entirely. One simply never knew in Fiore, what kind of creature one would come up on. She filled her canteen, careful to keep an ear out for movement that differed from her own. Positioned as she was while filling it, it wouldn't take much for her to be spotted. She had been smart enough to stash her few little dead squirrels in the pack she carried with her. She would lay them out later, since most boars were predators and drawn by the scent of blood. Snow looked both left and right, listening closely to the Forest sounds around her. Chirping birds, a slight breeze moving the grass, the babbling of the river as it ran. These were normal sounds, and a good indication she was mostly alone, and not on the trail of her prey at all. She gave a huff and sat down heavily, her bow in her lap. It was getting too warm too quickly for her this morning. She decided this would be as good a place as any to take a brief rest. |

He couldn't hear any movement nearby but Artorius could pick up the scent. Anything within thirty meters of himself was his territory. He could smell a change in the wind, the scent of freshwater, the birds eating the berries and fruits in the trees, everything. But, most notable of all was something foreign. Fragrance. Lotion, perhaps, mixed with sweat. Human, he was certain of it. Artorius was wary, paranoid as he naturally was at times. You have to be when you live in his world. A fellow traveler wasn't a rarity in this neck of the woods. There was a high likelihood that it was nobody who meant harm, at least not to him, but Artorius was the sort who preferred certainty over leaping without looking first when he had the opportunity to actually choose. Taking his chances, he crept forward quietly and then pursed his lips. Placing his fingers in his mouth, he let forth a sharp rhythmic and harmonic whistle. A bird call, but it was an unusual one. It wasn't one from the Lavender Forest, or any nearby forest. It was the call of the Singing Yutussal, a songbird native to the Lancarri Jungle. But, it's call was distinctive, enough that it had been adopted by those who knew it to mean 'I mean no harm', or often 'The coast is clear'. Artorius had used the bird call to indicate the latter throughout much of his career as a professional thief to signal his companions when to move. While he used it elsewhere, it was a call primarily used by hunters, and any hunter worth their salt would know the song. Casually whistling the sweet, soothing tune, Artorius approached the area from where the scent was the strongest. The sound of a babbling river became more clear to him as the sweet scent became more clear. Pushing through a few branches and breaking twigs, Artorius didn't hide his presence at all. The last thing he wanted was to start a fight as such a thing would be an inconvenience. Emerging through the dense brush and foliage, he revealed his form and stood out in the open. His eyes adjusted to the change of light, much brighter in this clearing, and he spotted a woman calmly seated with a bow on her lap. The man's soothing whistling halted, turning instead into a sharp, appreciative wolf-whistle. Hardly ever was the sort to hide his attraction. Nevertheless, he took a second glance at the woman. She was taking a rest, for certain, and from her posture and equipment she hardly seemed like an ordinary traveler. A hunter, maybe. Artorius was counting on that as he was hoping to glean some information about this boar. "Morning," he greeted the woman with a soft smile and a salutatory nod of his head. "Say... You haven't seen a strange-looking 'pig' around these parts, have you?" Edited by Mazohyst, Oct 1 2014, 11:14 PM.

Snow had been perfectly content listening to the sounds of the forest. The bird call that didn't belong caught her attention, and while she didn't know it's origins, she had heard it a scant few times before now. She made no move toward her weapon, knowing the caller was likely another hunter. She did turn her head ever so slightly and make an effort to see the whistled before he or she was upon her completely. Her peripheral vision served her well in this regard, as she could see him a little before he got the the point of wolf whistling. She assumed he was making noise in the brush on purpose and so elected to say nothing of his sounding like an elephant on the charge in the last few feet before he reached her. She did turn to fully face him as he approached, arching a dark brow at him. It was just harmless whistling after all, she reminded herself. It could be worse. She heard his question and managed a small smile, reminding herself that being friendly was something she wanted to do. "Not yet. I've been looking out for one all morning though. I thought that perhaps waiting near water would afford me some luck. Yourself?" She thought momentarily that they might he after the same prize, and her face changed. Her hand clenched on her bow reflexively, though she didn't do anything more than that. Be nice dammit. Come on now. Snow thought quickly. She relaxed the hand with effort, and managed another smile, the grey eyes staring at the water again. "I don't suppose this would uh...pig...as you say, would have the best tasting meat on its bones to ever Grace the lips of God or man?" She thought she knew the answer already, but cocked her head, listening carefully all the same. There was a small chance fate wasn't playing a trick on her and making her share her food. Very small, since fate had been something of a bitch of late. The look on her face was that of complete calm. Inside the wolf was clamoring that it wasn't in the mood to share, and she was doing her best to keep it silent. Deep breaths, look at the water, worry about the answer after it came. Another person was hunting the same beast he was after. Unfortunate, but at the very least it might mean help or companionship, and Artorius was hardly the sort of man to turn down the company of a woman especially when she looked like that. Though, they were both down on their luck as far as tracking this pig down went. At the very least, her speech confirmed that the boar existed. It all meant that Sachio wasn't lying his ass off when he told Artorius about the boar. He wasn't always the most reliable sort, so Artorius had his doubts and reservations, so a bit of confirmation took some weight off his shoulders and he began to think that this whole hunting trip might pay off in the end. Artorius quizzically raised an eyebrow as he noticed the woman's face contort, as if she were almost forcing herself to speak. Nervous maybe, he thought, but that only made it a little more entertaining to poke and prod. But, Artorius restrained himself. He was here for a purpose, after all, so it would do him wise to think with his head and not with something else. Though, that hardly prevented him from speaking somewhat coyly and smoothly as he was accustomed. Old habits die hard. "You have quite a way with words," Artorius casually complimented before nodding his head. "Yeah, you're right. Though, if I recall the exact words my friend described the meat was "It'll be the best damn bacon you've ever had. And it's huge, too, so you'll have bacon strips with your bacon strips with your bacon strips,"" he imitated his guild mate with a humorous tone before going on. "Then he repeated the words "bacon" and "strips" for at least five more minutes. Personally, I find the way you worded it to make it sound more appetizing." Shrugging his backpack off his shoulders and letting it drop at his feet, Artorius stepped towards the river and filled his canteen with some fresh water before taking a sip. Wiping his wet lips with the back of his hand, Artorius sat back down over by his gear for a brief rest. "You look like you know your way around a forest. You're experienced, I can tell," the man observed as he reclined and relaxed. "We're after the same thing -- turning that pig into pork. It'd be a pain to compete against one another, so I have a proposal for you. How about we work together to track down that boar? I doubt it'll go down easy, anyway, so we'd be minimizing the personal risk. We can split the meat and other stuff evenly between us. What do you think?" |

Snow did crack a momentary smile when he made fun of her guild mate. She hadn't been.complimented on her pattern of speech before so she just shrugged. Compliments weren't something she took well anyway. Living alone and afraid of what you might do to someone else tended to give you that sort of social awkwardness. The important thing was that he had confirmed that they were after the same beast. It gave credence to the rumors at least. She tried to think through it quickly as he sat down. She looked experienced. Huh. That was worthy of a grin. Though not for the reasons he would no doubt assume. She nodded instead, saying only, "I know my way around two forests in Fiore. This is one of them." She listened to the rest politely, and quieted the wolf inside that seemed to be wholly against this plan. She smiled at the strange man instead, taking a sip of her own water. It wasn't every day one happened upon a hunting companion in the middle of nowhere. She knew she would be better off with company on the journey. And competing, while something she would enjoy, might not net her the prize she wanted. Logically, this made sense. "I don't see why not. Snow White. Pleased to make your aquaintance." She offered a hand, which depending on him, would either be shaken or dropped completely in a few seconds. She had little reason to believe that he would be a problem for her. He knew the hunters call, which was a good sign. Besides that she was (mistakenly or not) confident of her ability to take care of herself. "Even split, to the best of our respective abilities sounds like a good plan. Mind telling me what you know about it?" She would play a game of you show me yours, I show you mine. That was fair if they were to be partners for the day. "And I'm going to assume you can move more stealthily than just before I spotted you earlier." She dug around in a dead-squirrl-less pocket on her bag and brought out, ironically, a few strips of dried pork. Standard rations for a day or so out in the wilderness. She would offer some to the stranger, and if he refused, she would eat all of it. For now settled on chewing a single piece. It was salty, and good enough for now. The fact that it made her want bacon didn't help sooth her need to kill the stupid pig as soon as possible. The forest remained quiet, the creatures moving about their day with more fear of man than before, but little else changed. At least in their part of the woods. |

Artorius' lips curled into a warm, friendly smile as the woman offered her hand. Graciously, he accepted it and retracted his hand back after a brief handshake. "Artorius Sidonis," he greeted her. "And the pleasure's mine." Although slightly socially awkward, Artorius was pleased that she was friendly and amicable, but also polite. With his propensity for dangerous behavior, Artorius had grown all too used to dealing with dangerous and fast women. Speaking and traveling with someone much more polite than he was used to was a good change of pace. Hunting has its dangers, of course, but it seemed far more tame than when women like a certain red-head were dragging him around to bar brawls and zombie-filled tombs, or a knightess who chased him every which direction like it was her job. Oh, that's cause it was her job. The man snapped back to attention when Snow asked him what he knew about the boar. Luckily, Sachio had done his research for him, so Artorius didn't have to look into it too much. Although, the more he thought about, the more he realized his guildmate was probably just trying to get him to do his dirty work and then mooch some bacon off him. "I know a fair bit. The boar we're after is what they call a 'Dire Boar.' Imagine a large boar, two-thousand some-odd pounds, big tusks, and spines on their back, and you got a pretty accurate image of what they're like. Now, here's the kicker -- they say there's a extremely large 'Dire Boar.' I heard through the grapevine that they're starting to call this one 'Tusker', for his huge sharp tusks." "Now, considering we're in a forest he should, at least in theory, be relatively easy to track," Artorius continued on with his arms crossed over his chest. "But, the problem is that nobody has been able to reliably track him down. I doubt he lives in the forest. If that were the case then this would be a simple hunt. My guess is that he lives in one of the caves around here." The man really gave it some thought. Artorius was hardly just a pretty face. He imagined that, provided the boar lived in the forest proper, that it would be easy to find. It would leave massive tracks, both prints and the other... much less sanitary kind. However, if it lived in a cave then would solve that issue. It would just got potty in the cave, for lack of better phrasing. "That said, Tusker's cave is probably somewhere near some of these Dire Boars. I mean, who doesn't like company now and then?" Still, finding the cave was much easier said than done. It wasn't like the boars opened up lemonade stands and rang bells at passerbys, and even if they found a pack of them there was no guarantee Tusker's cave was nearby. A challenge, for certain, but it's not like Artorius never enjoyed a challenge. Graciously accepting her offering of food, Artorius took a few strips and chewed on them. Dried, cured pork was quite nice. Personally, Artorius had a thing for jerky of all sorts. Smoked, delicious jerky, but what guy doesn't enjoy getting their recommended monthly sodium intake from a few strips of jerky? Not this one. "Of course. In fact, maybe I wanted you to notice me," he said with his lips curled into a devilish grin. "Wouldn't want to startle you, after all. I'm not exactly keen on getting arrows shot at me. I don't think anyone is, frankly." Several minutes of travel brought them into the thicker and more dense parts of the forest. The light here was growing dim despite the high morning sun which kept the hunters warm. The travel and the heat made him weary, resulting in a long yawn. Turning back to Snow, Artorius grew curious for a moment. "I gotta ask. How long have you been doing this sort of thing for? It seems natural for you." |

She stood stretching, the bit of food she had taker in renewing her energy. She shifted from foot to foot as she waited for her her uh..whatever he was to begin moving. "Very nice to meet you Artoius. Chance meetings can be the best ones after all." She gave another smile, her eyes sparkling slightly. She listened again as he explained what he knew of the boar to her. This was almost all new information, except for the dire part, and the fact that it was larger than the others. She had been roaming the woods here for months. Barring a single adventure or two she hadn't encountered much in the way of wildlife, apart from squirrels and birds...and cats that one time. That memory garnered a shudder. "So it's got a name. That's interesting. I once heard of a catfish in the bottom of a lake named Bubba who could barely swim around. Turns out he didn't exist." She wasn't trying to sound sarcastic. It just happened sometimes. She smiled to let him know she was teasing and listened as he continued. She nodded as he spoke, his logic more than sound as best she could tell. "There are several networks of caves around here though. Our best bet would be to find one with a nearby water source, or with water underground. He can't live without water, no matter how epic he is." She was already shifting again, the dark hair getting pinned back and out of her face again. "I'm glad it wasn't an accident then. I'm very much against hunting with people who don't know how to walk properly." She gave a grin as the moved forward. One would think, in a getup like the one Snow wore, she would be anything but a hunter. High heeled boots, a corset, the usual lacy skirt and her crimson ribbon around her arm. She looked more like someone going to...ah...well not going hunting was the point. Still, she managed to put her money where her mouth was, keeping her eyes open and her footsteps silent as she moved through the wood with Artorius. Her bow was in her hands, a single arrow against the string but aimed at the ground for safety. She was walking with him, but trying to get her bearings on precisely where the most extensive network of caves might be. His sudden question startled her and she looked at him a bit side ways before answering. "Information is a form of currency where I come from. But I will answer this one for free. No fun if you don't know the rules." She gave another smile. The heat was indeed stifling here. The canopy above was thick, making the sunlight soft; hardly there at all. Still, she could feel sweat on her back and her forehead. She wished hard for a breeze of some kind. "I've been hunting since I was about...4 maybe 6. I don't recall exactly. But when it's hunt or starve, you learn fast." She gave him another smile. This was not a bitter memory for her, just a memory. The only bitterness had nothing to do with starving. She took her bearings as they paused and motioned at one of the smaller paths leading off through the bracken and undergrowth."If memory serves there's a set of caves just a few minutes walk that way. It's downhill, so there may be pooled water at least there. It's as good a start as any, if you'd like." She wouldn't push him one way or the other. Might as well play it as partners. "What about you? You're no mean hand at this yourself." She said it out of the blue, suddenly remembering his earlier question. She found herself yawning as well. "That's contagious you know." She said as she pressed her lips together again. She waited for his answer, and moved her bow to a single hand, using her free one to reach for her canteen. It was too warm by far here under the trees. It was either drink or nap, and the latter wasn't exactly an option. |

Artorius couldn't help but notice how well Snow moved given her outfit. Among men, they say don't trust women who could move that well in heels. Although, so far Snow hadn't given him any reason to distrust her, however he made certain of the fact that getting on her bad side would hardly be a good idea. Artorius generally had bad experiences with arrows. Near-misses and not so...-misses. The scar in his thigh ached when he thought about that one, but he managed to push that thought off to the side, especially as Snow spoke about where she thought the Boar might be. Her logic was definitely sound and Artorius nodded his agreement. If this boar was as elusive as the rumors made it out to be then it made sense that its water source would be near its dwelling. This meant that it minimized the amount of time that it spent where it might be seen. What did it eat to grow that size anyway? Mushrooms or something? Artorius didn't spend much time thinking about that though. Artorius' lips curled into a playful grin, matching her smile as she spoke her piece about information. "Then, it would appear that you and I have something in common." Truly, information was quite important in his world as well. Thievery was cutthroat business, and usually you want to cut the right throat, break the right locks, and steal the right loot. Nevertheless, Artorius listened to Snow as she recanted her tale. An eyebrow was quizzically raised as she spoke, particularly about how she had begun hunting at such a young age. It wasn't unheard of, though Artorius couldn't say it was exactly commonplace either. Artorius felt a familiar feeling as she went on, speaking of how fast you learn when it's hunt or starve. Whether it was in the jungle or the city, Artorius had always lived that lifestyle. Hunt or starve. "Seems like a solid plan to me," he remarked, nodding his head as she mentioned a set of caves nearby. Of course, the question was switched back to Artorius. The man vaguely hoped she wouldn't ask, as his tale was no easy one to speak of. He was a criminal, and there was certainly no denying it. At least not without being dishonest. Just how trusting would she be if she knew she was in the presence of a thief? Artorius was cognizant of that fact, which meant he wasn't going to dispense all the details, just what she needed to hear and what he felt like sharing. "I've been sneaking around as far as I can remember. Dandelion Sector has a habit of doing that to you. You stay light on your feet and you stick to the shadows, and you take what you can. I'm a city-boy, I'll admit, but I'm not inexperienced at this either." Hardly a bitter story for him, as it had been one he had told hundreds of times. You can't deny where you're from, after all, only acknowledge and accept it. But, it wasn't something he was proud of either. "A year ago I was dropped in the middle of the Lancarri. It was harsh, but I was determined to survive. The feeling of hunger was like death, so I hunted with nothing but a knife and a spear. I spent six months in that jungle until I finally escaped." Half-truths. Intentionally, he left out the part where he had been a professional thief and a grave robber since he was a teenager. Also the part where he was met a dragon in the Lancarri and how that experience changed him. Plus she didn't need to know everything about him. Besides, it adds to the mystery. Down the hill, they eventually met the opening of a large cave. "Ladies first," he smirked before the pair entered the cave. Drawing a lighter from his jacket pocket, he flicked the lid and sparked a flame which illuminated the area. Sniffing the air with his powerful enhanced sense of smell, Artorius could certainly tell animals made their homes here. Though, there was no way to tell if they were boars, or if it was even the boar he was looking for. "We'll have to go deeper to find the good stuff it seems. At least it's cooler in here." |

She had heard of both of the places he mentioned, but she had visited neither. "I know both places are...harsh. or so I've been told." She didn't show pity. Neither for his predicament nor the one that had shaped her so well. It didn't do anyone any good. "Nice to know we have something in common though, besides being good at being sneaky." She hadn't missed his phrasing on that point, but she didn't feel the need to probe. It wasn't her way. Besides, she found that more often than not, the thing you wanted the most to know was found through silence, rather than annoying questions. Snow slung her canteen back over her shoulder and continued on with him once he agreed to going into the caves. She didn't know for certain of course which caves might be the best, and there were several options. This particular set of caves went in farther than most, with more than 3 separately defined caverns. She was only following a slight hunch after all. Her bow was still pointed directly at the ground, her eyes opening slightly wider in an attempt to see into the shadows. The first cavern had a definite downward slope into the opening. The cave mouth was overly wide, and could have easily accommodated another 4 people standing side by side. She looked around carefully in the darkness, startled a bit again when Artorius struck his lighter. Holding it aloft made it easier for her to see that there were tracks, though the off running water had muddled them somewhat. There was a steady dripping that could be heard echoing through the cavern, and the walls themselves were moist. "I suppose you're right. It would be difficult to tell what we're dealing with just standing here. Let just hope it's not some random bear cave." She hadn't seen anything like that here before, but that didn't mean much. Animals could move in or out anytime they so chose. "Left or right?"She pointed out the two openings at the back of the cavern. The right was open, a larger sort of natural door in the stone's face. The left was shorter, something they would be forced to crawl through. Width wasn't an issue there, only height. She would let Artorius decide though. |
