Marcus didn't have much time to himself before Manah returned, it would appear that a few minutes of alone time would have the entire base going up in flames. Of course, that would thought would've been amusing had that not been the exact case.

The girl barely managed to say two words before an explosion rang out, startling everyone. The base went into high alert, voice yelled, alarms blared, the once calm atmosphere of the place suddenly become panicked. It was all too familiar to Marcus... he hated that.

The prison had been compromised, the cells broken and the prisoners released. Marcus quickly put two and two together; this was no random accident, this was planned.

Nonetheless, the knight rose to his feet. The determined look on his face bespoke of his experience with the matter.

"Manah, stay with me." He ordered. "We need to find the command building and shut down the prison before we get overrun."

Just as he said that, three prisoners crashed into the room, wielding hefty looking staff weapons. Those were the guards' weapons...which meant the prisoners had already overpowered the guards. The prisoners quickly spotted Marcus and Manah and quickly went to attack them, a bloodthirsty look of glee on their faces as they ran at them.

Marcus activated the Talos Suit just before they reached him, the draconic style armor magically expanding from his gauntlet and covering him in shiny black armor. The prisoners had chosen the worst possible target to attack, for not only was Marcus inhuman, but also one of the most skilled polearm users among the Knights.

Moving with practiced ease, Marcus dodged the first overhead strike, then avoided the jabs to his abdomen. He punched a prisoner in the face, slamming him against the wall and knocking him out. Another prison tried to stab the knight but he simply sidestepped, grabbing the spear and breaking it in half. He then grabbed the man and threw him into another, they collapsed in a heap at the end of the room.

Marcus drew Iustitia. "The command room, Manah. Now."

The woman complied immediately, leading him across the base to the command room. The two of them moved quickly, all the the while dodging the rioting and fighting that was happening. A few of the prisoners tried to attack Marcus but he simply batted them away with a swipe of his lance, taking them down instantly.

He stopped twice to help a guard that was being overwhelmed by the prisoners, and while that surely slowed him down, Marcus couldn't help but stop. After all, these were criminals who no doubt held personal vendettas against the guards, they would kill the guards in a heartbeat.

By the time they reached the command room, the place was barred. Marcus could hear the sounds of fighting inside but the door was completely barred.

"Stand back."

Marcus held up his hand and blasted the door with his Concussive Blast. While the blast alone wasn't enough to break down the door, it did sufficiently weaken it. Marcus took a step back then charged at the door, throwing all his brunt strength against it.

At first is was just a short prickling pain that started at the edge of his skin. Gryffin could tolerate it. He had closed his eyes just as the man had said and it was quite by instinct too. Again, he was haunted by the voice that sought only to remind him of his father. He would never betray his father, and his heart would never betray him. So he did as he was told.

He felt a light touch on his head, the man’s hand was warm in contrast to the cold steel of the cuffs that bound it. He winced at the extreme contrast of temperature though he slowly felt sleepy and soon enough he could almost forget about the pain that was bothering him.

In his dream, he remembered being younger, sleepy and weak from a day’s worth of fun and playing. He had stayed longer in his grandfather’s house that it was way past his bedtime when his father arrived to take him home. His father had been busy lately, helping with the nearby town with some carpentry. As a seafarer, he had learned a lot of handyman jobs and even if he was a captain of his own ship, he believed it was best to know the ins and outs, as well as how to repair his ship. That way shipwrights wouldn’t have to be a problem and no fixer can’t cheat him. So it was well into the night when he felt his father’s hands wrap around him, hearing murmurs of warm voices before a kiss on his forehead and off they went. He would not have to wonder if he were to wake up in their own little house with his father next to him, asleep in the rocking chair next to his bed. Maybe his mother had yet to return from her expedition, or maybe his father thought he would have nightmares again.

So similar to his dream, Gryffin found himself being carried by strong yet gentle hands. Yet there was still that prickling pain on his wrists. It wasn’t as painful as before but it was annoying that he ended up waking up. And slowly as he opened his eyes, he saw the ceiling of the hallway, the lights moving past him before he redirected his eyes a little to the side and saw Thano. The man was carrying him in his arms and he didn’t seem much bothered by it.

“You’re awake. That’s good,” he said and looked at Gryffin before coming to a stop and placing the boy next to the wall. It was only then that Gryffin noticed they were no longer in that white room cell nor were they cuffed by those specialized cuffs that made him feel weak. Yet his head felt a little heavy and he was now fighting the urge to sleep. “It’s okay. You’ve done your part.” Thano knelt before him and patted him on the head and when he saw the other’s face, he could almost not believe that he was a feared killer in Dandelion Sector because he looked so gentle.

“Stay here. Someone will come to get you. You’ll be free.” Thano then started to walk away.

“Where are you going?” Gryffin managed to ask.

“To finish the job. I can’t disappear just yet, knowing my family is in harm’s way,” he paused and then added, “My brother and the police will have to pay for their anomalies. Tell Arroz not to worry any longer. It’ll be done this time around.”

Feeling a strange feeling of loss, Gryffin fought against his weakness and managed to stand up, though he still feel like he was staggering. He wanted to stop the other from doing whatever he was about to do, but Thano was already fast and away at the furthest end of the hallway. Only then did Gryffin notice that they were out in the hallway and there was a panic all around him. The entire prison was in chaos and some of the inmates were fighting with guards. Yet, Thano looked like he knew exactly where to go.

“I have to stop him!” Gryffin uttered as he pushed off from the wall, mustered his strength and started to run after the man, stumbling at first but slowly managing to get past the fallen guards.

Meanwhile, as Marcus and Manah managed to get away from the clearance room, foiling the attempt of some inmates to attack them, they would soon learn as soon as they reach outside, that there were now reinforcements with greater power. The Chief and a handful of men had managed to enter the isolated building they were in and they were all equipped with rather dangerous looking staves and blades that were wired all the way to their backpack, streaming some electric current to the weapons.

They were, for the most part, surprised to find Marcus and Manah to greet them. Though the Chief’s eyes quickly turned towards the inner courtyard and pointed towards the prisoners that were now using clothes and bedsheets to make ropes and climb down from their cells and into the courtyard. “Arrest them. Let no one escape.” Then he greeted Marcus with a slight bow of the head as he said, “How very fortunate of us to have a knight in our midst. Perhaps we can ask you a favor. There is a certain high-security detainee who may very well be on the run by now. He is rather dangerous, and if he is the cause of this break-out, he may as well have to be killed.”

He then turned towards the gate to the inner courtyard where the guards he brought were slowly turning the wheel to open the gate, everyone was prepared for whatever battle was about to happen. Too prepared in fact. “Ser Faldin, the detainee’s name is Thano Stratos. He is a marked man by death himself yet he is stronger than death. I hope you will not disappoint me. Should he leave this place alive, well, I fear I will have to send a report concerning the lack of action done by the knights to aid us. A very crucial blow to your otherwise very esteemed institution, is it not?”

Though the Chief and his handful of men quickly went in to face the inmates in the courtyard, Manah seemed distracted for a bit. She had a dangerous glare on her eyes that were stuck on the retreating figure of the Chief and then so quickly glanced about the rails of the different levels of cells seen from the other side of the inner courtyard, almost searching for someone or something. “We have to find him.” she managed to say as she led Marcus to the stairwell to the next level of the building which would lead them to the rising levels where the prisons were held. “The boy... I mean,” she added as if to lie.

The door relented against Marcus' considerable force, allowing him and Manah to enter the room. the knight hefted his weapon, expecting to enter a fight, but instead he was greeted by the Chief of Police, while Marcus was far from thrilled to see him, he was glad to see that some semblence of composure was being retained in the midst of this debacle.

Marcus nodded in recognition to the chief, whom proceeded to inform Marcus of the source of this breakout, a runaway criminal by the name of Thano Stratos. He was a dangerous criminal assigned to death row, and Marcus would need to track him down.

That said, Marcus did find himself struggling to maintain a neutral composure as the Chief of Police worded his 'request' in less than kind terms. From where he stood, the Chief's request was coming off as more of a threat.

The knight gave the chief a cold smile. "The knights aren't the ones who allowed a mass breakout to happen under their noses, are they, Chief." Marcus replied. "That said, I'll be glad to clean up your mess, we law enforcement have to cooperate, after all."

Marcus watched the Chief walk away, an angry expression on his face. However, the knight quickly set his dislike for the man; he needed to focus on the task at hand. Thano couldn't have gotten very far, and the boy was was nowhere to be found. Marcus could only assume that he had fled in the chaos. That disappointed Marcus, he was looking forward to meeting him.

"Let's find them then, Manah." Marcus said. "He couldn't have gotten far."

Marcus sheathed Iustitia behind him and spotted a prisoner who was struggling to get away. He was running across the base, heading straight for the alleyways and towards the main streets where he could hide amongst the crowds. Marcus knew that if they reached the main streets, finding them would be near impossible, a literal needle in a haystack.

"Keep up, Manah." With that, Marcus broke off into a sprint after the man, zooming after him at nigh inhuman speeds.

The runaway prisoner only caught sight of Marcus when he was nearing on him. He tried to pour more speed but had no luck, the knight easily tackled him to the ground, wrestling him to the ground. It was easy for Marcus, it was hardly different that wrestling down sheep to be sheered, it was almost nostalgic.

"Talk!" Marcus growled. "Where's Thano, Where'd he go?"

The man tried to struggle, but Marcus had him by the elbow in a painful lock. His face ground against the ground, he spit out some dust.

"I dunno man!"

Marcus tightened his grip. "Where?!"

The man grunted in pain. "FINE, FINE." He yelled. "He went for the highway! That's all I saw. I swear!"

Satisfied, Marcus let go of the man. "Good."

The knight whistled for a nearby patrol to pickup the prisoner. He got up and started to jog towards the highway; he had big game to hunt.

The wall crumbled along the chaos and there was sweet freedom just over the rubble. Thano could smell the triumph in it and he did not have any second thoughts to cross the boundary that held him isolated for so many years. And as he did, he felt the bounds on his hand lessen its power. He took in a deep breath and closed his eyes. For a moment, it was as if he could feel all of Dandelion Sector within him, each life resounding like heartbeats, and all the while a thunder cloud was brewing overhead. He smiled as he opened his eyes to watch the darkened clouds roll, coiled by streaks of lightning. And he felt an unquenchable thirst of vengeance just at the tip of throat.

Almost instantly, lightning struck him and the shackles all around him was thrown aside, broken and charred. Thano tore the last of the prison’s clothing on him, a piece of white that was once a coat, torn and left to shred through time. And he was free. At last!

He caught the starees of onlookers, and those who knew him easily recognized his demonic eyes. But what made them shiver was not his presence, but the lack of his grin. He was not like the reaper of old that smiled in the face of sentencing others. He was the reaper of vengeance, that looked on without mercy and with thin lips that hid the gritting of his teeth. How he wished to bare his fangs and bite down into the flesh of the traitorous fool!

A group of police had unknowingly exited the main building and tried to stop him, but Thano ignored their presence until one had tried to beat him with a magical lance. That man was forever marked as scorched ashes on the spot he stood next to Thano. The rest fell back on weakened knees, faces pale and eyes unwavering as they watched Thano the Reaper run into the streets with unfazed focus.

It would be a little longer before Gryffin manages to reach the outside. He had stumbled upon two confusing inmates who were at first confused on what to do with him. After all, he was a kid and he was weakened. They were first planning to kill him in the chaos, but then they started arguing about spoils of war. They liked Gryffin’s sword after all. And then, when one of them looked closer, he seemed to have the look of someone who had seen a ghost. He stuttered and fell back before running away. To which his fellow inmate followed suit. For whatever reason it was, Gryffin did not know.

Though as he found the cowering guards in that open wall, he was shocked to find the ashes of a man. He felt a deathly shiver run down his spine as he asked what sort of trouble he had gotten himself into. War was a terrible thing, but that was a common occurrence in his time, and it was an atrocity between nations. Revenge, on the other hand, was more deadly, for it encroaches all rules and cares none but to exact its desire. And it only needed one man.

As his ragged breath began to sound louder, he felt two strong hands wrap around him. One was around his waist, pulling him aside; the other was along his mouth to stop him from screaming. But he really had no strength to bother screaming so he tried to struggle.

To his surprise, it was Arroz and the rest of the gang who pulled him away from the crowd and into the alley to the side.

“I’m glad to see you’re alright.” Arroz said.

“I’m fine, but Thano is out there!” Gryffin replied after he was let go.

“Oh, we know. He made sure to tell us to stay clear his path.” Arroz pointed to the thunderclouds overhead. “He only has one enemy. But he may not stop himself if we recklessly step out from cover.”

“But–”

“Now’s your chance, boy. You did us a favor, now we are giving you one. You wanted to leave. Go on.” this time it was the man who owned the Ramen Shop. “Follow this path and you’ll be clear from Thano. You’re a good and brave kid. I hope we won’t see each other again. You’re better off out there.”

“Are you telling me to just leave him be?” Gryffin sounded perplexed.

“We’re telling you to survive,” Arroz said, patting him one last time. “You don’t belong here, boy. Now, go. This is our fight. Our problem.”

And just like that, Arroz and the gang left him in that alley, walking cautiously into the crowd. They were steering clear from Thano’s path, but they were slowly following their leader’s trail.

Marcus ran through the streets, his spear and shield strapped to his back bouncing with every bound. He had long recalled his armor back into it's compact form; he needed to move unhindered if he planned to catch up to Thano. No doubt the escaped fugitive was trying to put as much distance between himself and the guards as possible, whether he was the reaper or not, there was no way he would be able to take on an entire force of law enforcement all hell-bent on catching him.

Tracking the man wasn't too difficult; his reputation preceded him and as such, the people went into a panic, running as far away from as possible. Thus all Marcus had to do was follow the trial of delirium, however morbid that sounded.

The trail stopped at a clearing, where a building had seemingly been blasted apart. His gaze shifted to a scorch mark on the ground, the scent of burnt flesh filled the air, making Marcus want to gag. There was only one person he knew of who could cause this much destruction.

"He went from here." Marcus muttered to himself.

"Sir!" Manah called.

Marcus had forgotten she was alongside him, he was used to carrying his missions alone, having a companion with him was unfamiliar. Worst of all, Manah reminded him of someone else; someone who had placed that the same trust in him and paid the ultimate price for it. Marcus' chest felt tight.

"Yes?"

"We're not alone." She jerked her head to the alleyway.

Marcus nodded slightly. He reached for his spear, holding it to his side at the ready. He slowly advanced towards the alley entrance, motioning for Manah to cover his back.

Gryffin found it quite troubling. Just to be let off like that. He watched as Arroz and company left into the crowd. A part of him was rather relieved to know he could finally leave now, but a part of him also felt like he wanted to meet Thano once more.

“I have to!” he finally decided as he strapped the scabbard of his sword to the back of his waist and dashed into the crowd. He may not know the man for long, but their short-lived encounter was enough to enliven him. If anything, he wanted to hear his father’s voice once more. One last time was enough for him, even if the words were “farewell” or something strange.

At that very moment, a blast shook the south region. People were running from the streets and dust cleared from the behind an old arcade. Inside, a green lightning rod had struck down against the pavement. Inside, there were furniture scattered across the arcade, windows shattered and a man on the ground, terrified and crawling backwards. In front of him stood Thano, summoning his magic along his hand.

“How long has it been, brother?” Thano greeted and another large lightning bolt struck the ground just in front of the cowering man.

The man seemed to have raised his gun to aim at Thano but he was still shaking in fear.

“Y...you’re supposed to be dead!”

“Ah, brotherly love is so overrated, I know.” The gun fired but the bullet stopped midway as a lightning struck it down. “That’s why I realized that brothers formed through suffering and creed is a lot more genuine than a brother who shares my blood.”

“I’m not your brother! I’m no monster!” the man shot multiple times again, all bullets stopped in place as a magnetic field seemed to have left them floating midway.

“You always had a thing against mages ever since. We’re humans too.”

“No, you’re a demon!”

“Fine. A demon it is then,” Thano turned cold serious. “If that is what you want. I was hoping you would try to explain what happened in the past, but I guess it’s useless. No brother should betray another. I’ll have to rectify your existence.”

At that very moment, he was unaware that Marcus and Manah were closing into the arcade. And so was Gryffin who had stolen to the backstreets and found a way to the insides of the arcade. Yet thunder was brewing and lightning strikes flashed in the air about them.

Marcus and Manah entered the alleyway, following the sounds of shouting and running. They inched cautiously, weary of being ambushed but also with a sense of urgency. There was a door, and Marcus held up his hand for Manah to stop. He leaned in close and heard voices, two of them, they seemed to be arguing. Lightning crackled above, Marcus looked above and saw clouds starting to gather around the building. All the commotion seemed to stem from this spot; they had found their quarry.

The two stood next to the door on either side, holding weapons at the ready.

Marcus silently gestured for Manah to have his back, he would go first and she would come in after him to give back up. Marcus took a deep breath, then nodded to Manah.

He turned to stand in front of the door, then kicked it. The door flew off it's hinges, flying across the room and slamming against the wall on the other side, a large dent in the middle. Marcus entered the room, holding his spear at his side.

"Thano!" Marcus called. "It's over, I've found you!"

He found the man cornering what seemed to be another victim. Marcus didn't really need to jump to conclusions, they were already laid out for him.

"You don't want to do this, Thano." Marcus cautioned. "Let him go."

Marcus held both his spear and shield at the ready, though he hadn't donned his armor yet. Generally, Marcus preferred to not wear his armor unless he needed to, perhaps he hoped that by not wearing his armor, he was less threatening, then maybe he could settle things peacefully - as far fetched a hope that was considering Thano's bloody criminal history.

At that very moment, there was a sudden burst to the back. Thano glanced back with seething rage at who it was that interrupted his vengeance and caught sight of Marcus and Manah. For a moment, there was a slight recognition on his eyes before he sharpened his glare and gritted his teeth.

“Let him go? Never again.” Thano roared.

It was at that very moment when his brother took advantage of his sudden interruption. He reached in for a sword from his inner vest and stood up to launch himself towards Thano. But he, too, it would seem, was interrupted when Gryffin had managed to get there in time and grab hold of his lockpick set, pick out a large one and with his magic, accelerated the flight as he threw the item. The metal tool hit the hand that held the sword with a fast and painful flight that no doubt it would have broken his hand entirely as he dropped the sword.

Alarmed by the sudden clanging of the sword to the ground and the wailing of his brother, Thano turned back to look at his brother and without another word, a large thunderbolt-like spear shot down from the heavens and struck his brother without question. The green blade moved swiftly through the back hammered itself to the ground. He only spared a moment to watch as the life disappeared away from his brother’s eyes.

“It’s better this way, I promise,” Thano whispered before he turned around instantly and let loose a shockwave to push back the knight who had pursued him.

Shocked at the sudden course of actions, Gryffin found himself standing on one of the broken windows that overlooked the deathscene inside the arcade. He was, for starters, only hoping to protect Thano from that man’s deceitful tactic but immediately, the cards were overturned and it seemed as though Thano had delivered the final blow. And their eyes locked for a long moment, a snaking fear crawled up his back and his throat felt dry.

“You should have left,” Thano told his way. Gryffin nodded silently but he didn’t move at all. “Go on home, boy. There’s nothing left here.”

Though thrown off-balanced by the shockwave, Manah managed to get back on her feet. And if Marcus was planning to retaliate, she would finally reveal her true intentions. A wave of her weapon and a rupturing earthquake suddenly hit the arcade threatening the entire structure to collapse.

“I’m sorry, Marcus. You’re a good man but so is he. I cannot let you take him.” she would say as she would make her way towards Thano, the ground lifting upon her steps.

“Manah” Thano greeted her as she would embrace him. “I told you not to get involved.”

“Too late for that.” she replied with a kiss to his cheek.

Then the ground beneath them would swell up until a platform rose with them, carrying them higher until they could escape from the roofs.

Gryffin quickly grabbed hold of the pillar when the shaking started. He watched as Thano and a woman fled away. He did not know what he was hoping for but he ran towards the base of the platform, trying to get hold of it, but not even his sword could to latch against the surface. It was a strong magic. So he could only bid the man who had his father’s voice a swift farewell as their figures disappeared above.

But the arcade was still shaking and there was the imminent threat of collapse. He knew he had to escape. And as he turned to the right, he saw Marcus on the other side who may seemingly be trapped from the change of the structure’s form thanks to Manah’s magic. All of a sudden, his greatest fear of the past returned to him. He will not lose his grandfather a second time– he thought. So he burst towards Marcus with his magic-enhanced speed, disappearing from where he stood and reappearing next to him in almost an instant and grabbing him by the arm.

“This way! There’s an opening!” Gryffin shouted as he pointed towards the large windows at the sides. And they had to move quick else suffer an untimely burial.

Marcus had been hoping that his sudden entrance would prompt the hostage to escape, hopefully while Thano was preoccupied with Marcus. He began to reply to Thano when his hostage decided to make a move to attack. It all happened to fast; Marcus wanted to warn the hostage, to tell him to stop, but the boy Marcus had saved had seemingly appeared from nowhere and disarmed the hostage with a well-aimed throw.

Before Marcus could jump in to intercept the attack, Thano had redirected his attention to the hostage and with a bolt of lightning, the man was completely vaporized. He turned to the knight and tried to hit him with a shockwave.

Marcus raised his shield and intercepted the shockwave fully, hardly budging an inch. The death of the hostage had only served to antagonize Marcus.

He raised his spear and began to charge forward, but he only took a few steps before the ground beneath him began to shake, knocking Marcus off balance. When he looked up, Manah was walking towards Thano, the ground underneath her molding to lift her up to him.

"Manah?" Marcus asked in bewilderment.

Disbelief turned to anger, so Manah was in league with Thano, if things couldn't get any worse. Marcus started to step forward, but the building itself was unstable, shaking violently, his foot slipped and got caught through a crack in the floor. At this rate, the entire building would collapse any second. Looking up, he could see Manah and Thano rising up through an earth pillar and escaping through a hole in the roof.

"Thano!" Marcus yelled after him.

Marcus growled in frustration, it was then that the boy appeared next to him, grabbing his arm and telling him about a way to escape. All around them, the building was starting to fall apart, they literally had seconds to escape.

With a grunt of effort, Marcus pulled his foot out of the floor. "Let's go."

He sheathed his spear and began to run towards the windows, as they neared them, Marcus would grab the boy by the waist and launch them through the window, shattering the glass. Unfortunately, it seemed they had jumped from a couple of floors high. There was a split second where Marcus realized what was happening, they were going to fall and they boy would probably get seriously injured.

Twisting in midair, Marcus activated the Talos Suit, the armor appearing a blinding glow light and covering him instantly. He grabbed the boy close to him and adjusted their fall so Marcus would bear the brunt of the collision.

Marcus and the boy crashed into the ground below, the knight absorbing the force of impact through his legs, the force was so strong that the ground beneath them cracked and broke in a crater.

Marcus let go of the boy and tore off his helmet to glare at him angrily, completely unfazed by the sudden fall.

"Do you have ANY idea what you just did?" He demanded. "You got that man killed and helped a wanted fugitive escape! Do you realize how many innocent lives you've just endangered?!"

He had only meant for them to escape from the collapsing building but things went downhill it seemed. He had frozen with fright the moment the building began break apart but when Marcus had held him close, he somewhat remembered that secure feeling. Like instinct, he trusted the man and did not struggle as the knight summoned his famous armor– of which he had longed for to see– and as incredible as he was in his memory, Marcus ignored their landing which Gryffin no doubt knew may have hurt him.

But he was let go and surprised when he was faced with such words of anger. Looking at the man who would be his grandfather– his ever caring and gentle grandfather– show such as terrifying side and bellow with such authority and anger, made his heart skip a beat in fear. He did not think what he had done. He only meant to save Thano who had his father’s voice. But in the process, he may have forgotten about the man who was also connected to him, by blood even, and the man he also cherished like his father. This incident would no doubt have made him hate him so.

“Ree...” he gasped as he took a shakey step back as he kept his eyes locked on Marcus. He took in a few more air before his voice would finally escape his mouth more clearly, “Sorry.... I’m sorry... I just didn’t want to lose him again...” And those words ,though he knew would be meaningless for the man was not truly his father but only someone whose voiced resembled him, brought an uncontrollable wave of memories into him as tears fell down his cheeks.

He gasped as he took another step back and wiped the tears, shaking his head. “No... I just...”

It was a strange moment for him. It was almost as if all the years of hardening his spirit, building up his courage, and training for war had disappeared. His wall of confidence crumbled before him and he felt lost. Lost in this damn world where he did not belong in. Frustration surged and memories overlapped. “I just... he was about to shoot... and I can’t...” And he dropped onto his knees as he suddenly felt weary and just wanted everything to stop, bringing his hands to his face as he could no longer stop the tears from falling endlessly. He gasped in between sobs and pleaded, “Nana, I’m sorry... I don’t know anymore.... I’m so sorry. Nana, don’t hate me.”
