Hiding behind the same pile of boxes, the Monkey came to a similar conclusion: running was a good idea right about now. "We should," Oami responded, "But which way? Which way? The guards came from everywhere, now they're running back to everywhere. No matter where we ran we will run towards wherever the guards came from, but you saw the look on their faces too, right? If people like them are running away with faces like that, then we-" The decision was all but made for the two of them, when he turned and noticed that it - the thing, for lack of a better explanation - was standing only a few meters behind them, staring at them with eyes, or rather, the holes where one would expect a fish-headed entity's eyes to be in. The thing was absolutely hideous - its body a puke-like green, its shape some grotesque combination between a man and a fish, with fleshy protrusions occurring just where they would make the thing look worse, a horrid mockery of the human form with webbed appendages and a gaping jaw filled with rows upon rows of tiny needles for teeth. "Nope, nope, nope, nope, nope!" Oami had never nope'd so hard as he did just now, as he immediately leaped out from behind the pile and ran the other way, directly away from that fish-like monstrosity. "Forget the guards, I'd rather end up in jail than next to that thing!" He didn't even look back to check whether or not Trevor had joined him in this fleeing endeavor. |

There was nothing else to be done but what his companion had suggested. Trevor had contemplated drawing his sword and assaulting the creature but two factors intruded on his chivalrous rush. The first factor was a concern that the abomination might possess magical abilities and the second factor was that there were more where it came from. Unbidden, the word ‘squamous’ came to mind as he looked at the fish thing, and the young knight idly wondered where it had come from. However this was no time for lexicography or etymology. He shouted to Monkey as he began to move. “I agree. Let’s just get the hell out of here.” The crush of people was overwhelming as they ran out of the building. No one really paid them any attention in the rush to get out. In fact they looked much like all of the other panicked individuals fleeing the scene. Belatedly, Trevor wondered if they hadn’t just unleashed something terrible on the city of Trillium but at least he’d escaped. Turning, he realized that he’d lost Monkey in the crowd. Perhaps it was for the best right now. If he could, he’d connect again with his friend but for now he just wanted to get well away from it all. He let the tide of humanity rush him along and didn’t look back. Note for Callit

Oami couldn't remember much - not the stairs, not the other fleeing guards, not his sweat , not even whether or not Trevor was beside him - until he had finally stopped, somehow now outside of the building, in the middle of a busy weekend night in Trillium. Everyone was going in different directions, rich folks waving stacks of money, mobsters with violin cases, women in scanty clothing waving to well-dressed men, beggars and thieves lurking around in the alleyways and other shadowy places. He turned, and looked to find - Trevor was nowhere around him. Did he get caught? Did he successfully flee? Oami did not know; but, realizing where he was and his current condition, he could only hope for the best. He had, after all, to make sure he himself was in decent condition, after that ordeal. With subtlety, the masked man ducked in behind a large group of rowdy people, following behind them just closely enough to be mistaken by others as a part of the group, while distant enough for those noisy young men and women to not notice him. The Monkey knew not where he was going now, nor where the other man had gone too - but the streets around here weren't too safe either. As the crowd he was trailing entered a large hotel, so did he. One moment, he was right behind the last woman in the group, watching as her unzipped handbag swung behind her, its contents out for the world to see - the next moment he was there in the lobby before the welcome staff, ordering a room for one, paid fully in cash. "Yes, yes, just one night. Oh, no, keep the change - I know how hard it is to be working the night shift. All right, you have a good night too!" To room, to bathe, to dine, to sleep and forget it all - that was his plan. |
