Honesty without tact is cruelty.

Inara wasn't one hundred percent sure why she was in this city. She wanted to travel, yes, and see more of Fiore as a whole. But this had been a mistake she thought. She wasn't one to really play games of chance, and debauchery was sort of against her moral code. So she had wandered into this city of sin as it were and now it was growing dark. She had seen the glittering windmill in the center of the city as the afternoon came on. She had stared at it in wonder for more than thirty minutes. This, unfortunately, had been interrupted rather rudely by some strange man trying to pinch her bottom. She had smacked him soundly across the face, eliciting a laugh from most of the people hustling through the busy square. She was tired, and she was distressed. Wandering into one of the seedier hotels in search of rest hadn't helped much of anything either. She had no wish to see so many naked people ever again in all of her life. She was fairly certain that even now, something like an hour later, she was glowing with shame on their behalf.

Inara had finally managed to find one small building amongst the high rises of the city that served food and coffee. She sat there quietly, pondering and sipping a hot cup of something vaguely resembling coffee. She was more than a little tired, and the drink didn't have enough caffeine in it to keep a mouse awake, let alone her. The sky above her was filling with dark clouds, making her sigh again. What on Earthland had she been thinking coming here? She had heard bad things about it from various travelers, and she knew better than to think she would be an exception to the "This place is bad news" rule. Especially since lately she had been doing a fairly good job of staying in trouble in one form or another. She took a deep breath, raising the hood of her cloak against what was surely oncoming rain. Before she could even think about the day getting worse, there was a sudden downpour. She rushed into the little shop, thoroughly soaked despite her haste.

"There there miss. We can at least get you a warm towel." The old woman who seemed to be the keeper of the tiny shop, and who resembled nothing so much as a tiny mountain, made her way to the back of the place, bringing Inara a towel in a jiffy. She smiled and thanked the woman kindly, giving her a few extra jewels for the trouble. She took a seat and started on her second cup of almost coffee, hoping the downpour would subside. No such luck. Instead, the little bell above the door tinkled, and in stepped a few rather large men none of whom looked like they were up to anything good. She sighed again. She wasn't in the mood for a fight, but if they caused trouble, she would certainly give them one. Til then, she decided, it would probably be best to be as unobtrusive as possible. Luckily her hood was still up, concealing her bright blond hair, even as the green eyes watched their every move. She knew this day was going to get worse. She could feel it in her bones.

"He should be back by now" Tea said to herself, frowning. Looking out from her vantage point on a small building's roof, she scanned the city's skyline. Finally, she made out a rough shape in the distance. It was small, mobile, and heading right towards her. Tea smiled; Sendou, her vulture scouting companion, had finally returned. Tea held her arm out as a perch, rifling through her pockets with her free hand. Sendou landed, and Tea pulled a bone-marrow cube out of her pocket. She didn't need to do anything further; Sendou had been well trained by this point, and knew exactly what to do.

Hopping off of his master's arm, Sendou opened his mouth wide; a bright glow appeared from his beak, and he began projecting pictures on the building behind him. Tea watched, and nodded. Sendou had been born with Camcondor Magic, allowing him to take pictures and record sound as well as project the images later, and Tea had discovered this relatively early in their relationship. I reckon this is the first time i've had em' use it for somethin' other than sending messages, though Tea mused. The applications of his magic had been obvious from the beginning, but Tea'd not gotten much opportunity to put them to use until today. I guess this is what we'd call a real scouting mission

Images of Trillium, in black and white, appeared one after another on the wall, and Tea studied them intently. Finally, one caught her eye. She pointed at it, and Sendou enlarged it. There lay the image of a small building, looking like a small restaurant. "Well, there we have it; There's a Cafe in this city afterall! Mission accomplished...if they've got something good to eat there, anyways." Tea exclaimed. She tossed Sendou the cube, and he almost seemed ashamed to eat it; it was as though the supremely petty motives behind the "mission" had wounded his pride--though not enough to keep him from claiming his reward.

-------------------------------

Tea had arrived in Trillium by train just a few hours earlier, after deciding she needed to relax after her most recent mission. Tea wasn't particularly prone to gambling, and she was hardly the sort for debauchery--but she'd heard offhand that Trillium had several beautifully ornate casinos; the first thing Tea had wondered about them was how difficult they'd be to climb, and so she made her way to the City of Sin. Before actually engaging in her experiment, Tea figured she'd need something to eat, and decided to put Sendou's skill to the test with her "scouting mission". Satisfied, she motioned to sendou; understanding, the bird made his way back to their home--though not before angry squawking, a frustrated peck, and purposeful hesitation. Satisfied, Tea began making her way down the building, the same way she'd came up--this being a nearby tree. It was time to head to the Cafe.

--------------------------------

Tea walked through the streets, moving past tourist and native alike without even glancing; the sights and sounds of the town held little interest to her, having been spoiled by her time in Belladonna; instead, her eyes glanced upwards, scanning for buildings that fit the description of the casinos she'd heard of. Tea wandered absentmindedly...until a sudden downpour of rain brought her back to her senses. ...And there goes climbing Tea thought. Her thorough disappointment showed through a frown on her face. She sighed, and did her best to keep her fur from being soaked. Hiding her arms in her armpits, Tea looked around for a place to take shelter--only to find the very Cafe she'd been going towards, just a few feet away. Wasting no time, Tea made her way to the door, ducking inside as fast as possible. Rudely weaving through a group of large men that she hardly noticed, Tea made her way to a seat towards the back--just a short distance away from the seat of a hooded figure. Huddled, and soaked, Tea grabbed at the complimentary paper towels, desperately drying off her fur.

Why didn't I think to bring an umbrella? Didn't this same dang thing happen on that mission I was on? She thought...oblivious to the rising anger of the gentlemen she'd pushed past.

Inara watched from under her hood as the woman…mostly woman she amended, came through the door. In her rush to find a dry place, she had pushed past the hoard of angry men, not only making them wet as well but managing to make them angrier besides. Inara couldn’t help but smile. The woman was furry in so many places, and she had horns growing from her head. If Inara had to guess, she would’ve guessed right away that this particular woman was more goat than woman. She made no effort to hide the things that made her different, and that made Inara smile too. She liked it when people were proud of what made them different.

The men at the front of the café seemed just as angry as ever, but for now they seemed to content to have a seat in one of the many booths that lined the other side of the place. Now that Inara was not here alone, she felt no need to hide her face. She pulled the hood off, and waved at the waitress. The woman brought her a new cup of coffee, and Inara decided that since there was a downpour going on she might as well go ahead and eat besides. She ordered simple things, an omelet, and some more coffee. She had a feeling by the time she got to leave here she would be wired to the max if she kept that up though.

She glanced over at the girl trying to dry herself with napkins. She smiled again, green eyes sparkling. “Here, you can use this if you like.” She placed her cloak, mostly dry now, on the chair beside of the woman. “I don’t think the napkins are helping. And I think you got caught in more of that downpour than me.” Inara was friendly by nature, so it wasn’t anything new, her introducing herself to someone she just met this way. She believed most people missed opportunities to make friends simply by not saying hello. “I’m Inara by the way. Nice to meet you.” She held out her hand, hoping that the woman wouldn’t think she was being too pushy. She just didn’t want to be in this strange city alone anymore.

Tea took the cloak and began drying off with it--without even noticing who gave it to her; completely absorbed in her current circumstances (being soaked), Tea focused only on a singular goal (not being soaked).

After thoroughly drying off, Tea realized that the implement she'd used to accomplish the task had come from somewhere, and turned to see what she'd missed. There stood a girl with bright green eyes, a hood draped across her shoulders along with locks of vibrant blonde hair. Tea smiled, noticed the outstretched hand, and shook it vigorously. "Ya'll's the one who handed me that cloak? I reckon I owe ya one" Tea said graciously. Upon some further thought, Tea vaguely remembered hearing the girl offering the cloak; realizing that she'd missed quite a bit, Tea changed tones. She let go of the girl's hand, and bowed her head in shame. "I'm sorry I didn't respond to ya'll before! I reckon I was a bit caught up in this here soaking." Tea apologized. She tried to remember what she'd missed, as best she could.

"...Ya'll said yer name was Inara, right?" Tea said, deciding that starting over was the best fix, "Well, the name's Tealiin, but ya'll can call me Tea!". Not quite knowing what else to do, Tea outstretched her own hand. Maybe it dont make too much sense, offering a handshake just after shaking her hand, Tea considered, but I reckon I oughtta make some sorta effort at a proper introduction here. I kinda did ignore her's, after all.

Tea, in the moment, caught herself reflecting on how previous encounters had gone, and her already high spirits only heightened; I reckon I really have changed.

After all, Tea was actually worried about the sort of impression she was making.

[ooc: sorry I took so long to reply.]

Inara gave the girl a gracious smile, and even giggled a little at what could only be called a country accent. She shook the woman's hand again when she stretched it out, appreciating the gesture as recompense for the woman sort of ignoring her earlier. Not that it was really necessary. She had been accused more than once of forgetting to speak to someone at all when she got focused on something going on inside her own mind.

"Yes I am Inara. Its nice to meet you Tea." She took the cloak back, laying it across the back of her nearby chair so it could have its own time to dry out. Magical cloak or no, it was likely going to take it a while. Between her and this lady it seemed it seemed the piece of enchanted cloth had absorbed more than its share of water today. She sat in the other seat at her own table, still taking care to keep the men in the cafe in sight. She was also sitting in such a way that Tea could easily see her.

"Not to be overly nosey, but might I ask what brings you to Trillium?" She herself had had her own reasons for coming. Innocent reasons at that. She hoped very much that Tea's reasons were innocent as well. But one could never really tell til one asked the question. "If its an awkward answer you aren't required to answer." She gave the woman a smile, just to let her know that she honestly meant it. She wasn't one to pry necessarily. Just of a curious nature.

To her left, however, it seemed the men that had tramped in were becoming louder. They weren't ordering anything either. Inara very nearly wanted to yell at them just for being rude. She tried hard not to intervene when someone could handle the situation on their own. She didn't like people to feel powerless after all. It was just becoming a bit much. The one in the lead said something horribly rude, calling the woman running the place a terrible name. That got her ire up. She turned to Tea, a small smile on her face. "Excuse me for just a moment will you?" She stood, walking toward the group of men. It didn't take her long to slip between the other four, her small size coming in handy. she turned easily enough to the leader, somewhat surprising him. He stopped mid tyrad and looked at her. "Excuse me sir, I'd like to know if there is a problem here?" As she spoke she brought her braid over her shoulder, and turned nonchalantly to the woman who had been their victim not a moment before. It was easy enough with her at this angle for all of the men to get a good long look at her guild tattoo.

She counted to five, after handing the now crying waitress a handkerchief. She turned back, dead silence and slightly blank looks on the faces of the men. She arched one perfect brow. "As I said, is there a problem here gentlemen?"

"...Why would it be awkward?" Tea asked innocently, curious as to what Inara meant. Thinking on it for a moment, Tea decided that perhaps there was some element of this city that would lend such a reaction. It's apparently got really nice casinos, so I guess there's that. she thought. If inara was a native, surely she'd know of the casinos--and Tea figured that this was what she'd meant by being too nosy; the associated habits of these establishments were often a private matter, as far as Tea knew. "I admit, I don't really know much about this city, but I ain't here for gamblin' if that's what ya'll meant" Tea finally answered, chuckling.

"Actually, if ya'll's curious, I's--" Tea found her explanation interrupted by a sudden, loud noise. Turning, she found that the large group of men she vaguely remembered wandering past had gotten much rowdier. One of the larger ones had practically roared with laughter, and the rest were far from calm. Tea frowned, and waited patiently for them to stop. When they'd seemed to quiet down, she smiled; Reckon everyone likes getting a little rowdy every now and then she thought. Tea began once more. "Like I was sayin', if ya'll is wondering why i'm here, then--" once again, Tea found herself interrupted, as the ruffians began yelling once more. This time, Tea saw, they'd started an impromptu arm wrestling competition--which had more in common with a brawl than anything else; one player's victory was met with a swift punch to the face, met with cheers by the spectators. The resulting roughhousing knocked over the decorative flowerpot on the table. It shattered on the ground, and it took every bit of Tea's self control not to charge them, horns aimed for their throats.

Still, Tea calmed herself, taking a deep breath. She had become a talented mage on top of already being a skilled fighter; Still, just bein' able to finish somethin' don't justify startin' it in the first place she reminded herself. Tea had worked hard to see herself as more than a berserker--now, the trick was to remember this. Finally calming down again, Tea prepared to finish her explanation. She opened her mouth. And before she could even draw the breath necessary to finish her statement, Tea heard something completely unforgivable; someone at the rowdy table insulted the establishments owner. Tea hadn't actually met the owner, so she didn't know that she was a kind old lady; still, such a rude comment towards someone who was effectively accommodating such hateful people at her own expense constituted the straw that broke the goat's back.

Tea got up, brushed herself off a little, and scanned the group. sighting the ruffian that seemed to be laughing the loudest at the comment, Tea began walking forward. Tea once again completely focused in, and her thoughts shifted away from offense to action. "Right by the trachea, next to the Thyroid, that's where ill aim. Even if I miss the jugular, he'll probably fall unconscious from the trauma. Then ill grab him, so when his buddies attack ill be ready." Tea thought through every part of the potentially upcoming fight, save for the consequences of this planned murder; Tea was a person who got tunnel vision rather easily--and right now she only saw her anger, and a very quick and effective solution for dealing with its source.

Inara smiled, and stepped into the ruffians--which was enough for Tea to regain her senses. She shook her head, and noticed the world around her once again. A friendly girl, who looked like a waitress or an owner, cried in the corner. Inara appeared to have asked them if there was a problem, and showed off her guild tattoo. Tea, being behind inara, hadn't seen the tattoo--but guessed at its nature. Tea calmed herself down, chided herself for falling into an old habit so quickly (blaming it on fatigue) and displayed her own guild tattoo. "Ya'll should answer the girl's question; I might get impatient, waiting for ya" Tea boasted, her own tattoo fully visible to the offenders.

She wouldn't gore them, for sure, but giving a few of them concussions if they turned hostile sounded very appealing to Tea just then.

[OOC sorry. Could've sworn I posted for you the other day.]

Inara was more than a little surprised when the other woman got up and showed off her own guild tattoo. She was happy though, to know that she had back up in some form or fashion. She was facing the men again, who seemed more than a little disconcerted that there was not one mage offering them problems if they wanted them, but two. The leader spoke up rather quickly, eying each of them in turn. "N..No ma'am. No problems here." He started to back away, but Inara put out a small delicate hand. "I think you're forgetting something. You made this poor woman cry. Don't you think you owe her something?" She raised a brow, hoping that he wasn't so dumb as to not make the connection with what she had. Surely, somewhere in his life someone had taught him some kind of manners, even if they were utterly lacking now. "Y...Yes'm. I'm sorry ma'am. We all are. Ain't that right boys?" There was a chorus of agreement, and a few more muttered apologies. Inara nodded, smiling slightly. She was glad it hadn't come to actual violence as these situations so often did. They backed out of the cafe slowly, turning and running at the last second into the downpour.

"Well," Inara said lightly. "That went better than I expected. Thanks so much for your help Tea." She gave the other woman a genuine smile, her grin eyes lighting. "Now then. Are you quite all right? Anything we can do for you?" The waitress smiled, dabbing at her tears, and hugged both Inara and Tea in turn. "Thanks so much! You wouldn't believe how often those guys come in here, trying to make trouble. You're the first ones to ever stand up to him though, I'll be bound. So everything you order today is totally on the house. Thank you." She took a deep breath and headed toward the kitchens with her own trey of things.

Inara gave a small laugh as things seemed to return to a semblance of normalcy. "So...Anyway Tea. I meant I know they have...yeah gambling houses here. If you'd been here for that and didn't want to tell me I'd understand." She was blushing slightly. She knew the city housed more than just casinos, and far more shadier dealings tended to transpire. Or at least, she certainly knew it now. "I'm here for sightseeing more than anything." She thought for a moment. "So what are you here for then, if you don't mind my asking?

[OOC: No problem! Look how late mine is!]

Tea wasn't quite sure what Inara had meant by her hesitation; she wasn't the sort to actively seek that sort of entertainment--though she certainly recognized it when she saw it--and having not shared Inara's encounter with one of these establishments meant that this subtlety had gone completely over her head. "Ah, don't ya'll worry bout' it; gamblin' ain't exactly a public sorta topic" Tea said, attempting to reassure Inara. Tea considered the reason for Inara's slight hesitation, finally reaching a conclusion moments later. She is awfully touchy bout' this...I best not pry further. She smiled; if her new friend did have a gambling habit, as she now suspected, Tea was determined to be tactful about it.

Tea reached her erroneus conclusion just as Inara explained her reason for visiting. Tea immediately smiled. "Well, that's basically what i'm here for too," She responded, "but I reckon this rain has made my...specific plans impossible." Tea was going to mention her plans to climb to the top of the most ornate casinos in the city but--fearing triggering her new friend by mentioning casinos--decided against it. For all I know, this girl's lost enough to casinos to last a lifetime. I ain't gonna go poke that nerve.

Just as she finished this thought, Tea remembered the proprietor's offer of food on the house, and addressed Inara once again. "Hey, ya'll wouldn't mind if we hung out together for a bit, would'ya? I could use a bite to eat, maybe some coffee." she asked. With her initial plans ruined, hanging out with Inara seemed like a very fun pastime.

Inara could see Tea giving her a rather strange look. She wondered if perhaps the woman had a serious gambling problem. The kind that she couldn't talk about in public. She began to feel bad almost immediately. She hadn't meant to bring up a touchy subject for the woman. She could tell by her sudden hesitation (or at least she believe she could) on the subject that it was likely that she was trying not to think about it. Inara cocked her head to the side as Tea told her that her plans had been postponed by the rain. There was a famous outdoor casino...Inara didn't say a word, just nodded and smiled. If she didn't want to talk about her gambling problems, she would be a good friend and not bring them up.

Inara took a seat and smiled. "Yes I would like very much to sit with you for a bit. I can't turn down a free meal after all." She laughed a little and waved the waitress over. She supposed she wouldn't tell Tea about her thoughts on gambling and how bad it was for people in that case. She didn't want to push the woman into it if she could help it. "I would like some coffee please miss, and perhaps some pancakes?" She smiled as the woman took down her order and thanked them both again for intervening on her behalf. "It was nothing really." She took a few moments and waited while Tea ordered. She wondered what to talk to her about, gambling obviously prominent in her mind now that she believed the subject taboo. She thought for a moment and said instead, "What Guild are you from? I'm not familiar with that particular tattoo." Good good. She had stayed away from anything awkward. "I'm from Quatro Cerberus myself. We have fun there. Playing cards and whatnot." She blushed a little. She was telling the truth, but she thought it might be a trigger for her friend and she felt guilty the moment the words were out. She refrained from speaking again as she waited for Tea to answer.

It was highly likely that her own words would be misconstrued. But of course, she was abundantly unaware that Tea thought she was the one with the gambling problem.

Inara's blush at "playing cards" was all the convincing Tea needed to change the subject. That's probably how it all started, poor thing she thought, frowning. That something as innocent as playing cards with guildmates spiraling out of control into an addiction shook tea to the core; how cruel life could be, for such a fate to befall someone as kind as this girl! Tea thought on this subject no more, as Inara had asked her a question. "Oh? This here's Lamia scale's seal. Sometimes I feel like we's half research firm, but a lot of our work is focused on handling big picture sorta disasters, like Eco-system collapse or finding old artifacts before troublesome folks get to em'. Still good sorta stuff, just not always direct." Tea explained.

"Oh yeah, I'll take a salad...if ya'lls got any." She asked, upon realizing that the waitress was still waiting for her order. "...some sugar cubes too, if that's ok." The waitress, no doubt making the connection between Tea's appearance and her request, smiled. Having now taken down both her patron's requests, the waitress left. Tea thought for a moment, her mind wandering back to Inara's apparent problem. She's a nice girl, and a guild mage at that; I can't just leave things as they are! Tea thought. Tea was no psychologist, and she couldn't possibly understand what a gambling addiction could be like--but if nothing else Tea knew how to have fun. Hell, maybe the two of us should just do something physical, outdoorsy-like; I reckon I can at least give her a good day--doin' something that ain't gambling! Tea suddenly stopped; what would Inara even enjoy doing? Climbing was right out, thanks to the rainfall, and there was no guarentee that Inara was even the sort to partake in physical activity.

...well, I guess we're both mages, so I reckon we've got that going for us. Tea took a moment to ponder that thought, while waiting for Inara's response; with more time, perhaps, she could think of a way to turn this chance encounter into something fun...but for the moment, Tea decided it would be best to enjoy their meal to the fullest.
