Varriden nodded. "Basically, yes. But our perception of magic - or rather, detection - is different. While Yoh here seems to see it as light of some sort, I 'sense' it. More of a feeling than a physical thing or seeing something moving. I feel it when it's nearby. It's how I sensed the magic in you, Elene," Varriden said, pointing at her briefly. Elene then asked an interesting question to the two Archives - what magic was, to them. Varriden looked at Yoh briefly, then said, "Well, between my own experiences, and my various studies, such as this book," he said, tapping the edge of the cover of the book of runes he was still holding on to, "I've come to my own conclusions, though mine aren't quite as....glorified as Yoh's. Magic is a combination of will and energy. Both from the body. The Energy is the body's own, and the will gives it shape and form. Even elemental affinity and size, density, all sorts of characteristics can rise as a result of the user's own will and individual traits. Magic can exist in nature, but runs freely, without restriction - this is caused by the unbalance of energy and will. Nature is considered to have a terrible will by some - they would point you towards examples of ivy overgrowing an abandoned house, while others would show you pictures of towns wiped out by hurricanes - but this is not quite accurate. The force behind nature is strong, but that is the energy, not the will. With an excess of energy but a lackluster will, the force overflows and erupts. This is also true with mages and their own magic - when they summon up more energy than they have the willpower to control, it rages outward, unbound by their constraints. Those are the rules that have been applied to magic, as it is a form of energy, and all forms of energy have sets of rules they always follow, no matter the form." Varriden stood, stowing the book away again. "But Yoh's guess might not be entirely false, either, in a sense - while rules stand to define magic, there are also, possibly, rules that have yet to be discovered - and thus will remain mysteries until brought to light. Though honestly, I'm not surprised that Yoh's definition of magic differs rather greatly from my own. He can physically see it as light, if I'm understanding correctly. If so, being able to witness it as light might have impressed a somewhat 'holy' feel to magic upon him," Varriden said, looking back to Yoh. "A sense that, while I can't confirm as true or false, certainly has an origin. If I learn in the future to somehow view magic as a thing - perhaps even hold it like an object - then my own views will shift some in measure." Varriden watched as the children collected coins to put into the pot near the fountain, chuckling as one joked with Elene. |

Elene was astounded by the difference of opinions, even though the magic is the same. she thought about what they said, as she herself never thought much of magic. Why would she think of something that had become a part of her daily life? It was just natural, a part of her, yet Yoh seemed to think it was also a part of nature, more than a part of humans. This made sense to her as there are those magicians who have elemental type magic, and yet Varriden made sense too. Magic could very well be a force dwelling inside us, a combination of internal power and will. the more she thought about it, watching the ripples in the water, the less she understood. Though she did know magic was a form of power, she couldn't say whether humans draw it from themselves or nature. She did know her own magic felt like it came from her soul, yet there was always a feeling of power from the world immediately around her, so maybe she draws a small amount from nature as well. She thought a little more on Varriden's concept of it being a form of energy and will. If the energy overwhelms the will then it explodes in an uncontrollable force. that could explain what happens when she gets angry or sad, yet she hasn't been able to test that and would prefer not to. Though, the two of them could both be right. As they passed the little kids she plucked a coin from the pot and chased a little boy around, laughing. Then she went to the pot of gold coins and dropped the coin back in. She was smiling when she returned to the potato stand. She was about to speak when Yoh did a mock bow and called her princess. She sighed and snatched the potato from his hand. "Thank you, Ser Yoh, I shall eat this and then I shall buy you whatever you want from the cart. For your good service, of course." She winked back at Yoh, hoping she hadn't crossed a line somewhere, but hey, he was messing with her so it was her turn to have fun back. She turned to Varriden next. "Court Mage Varriden I shall also offer you whatever treat you may want from this stand. Though I wonder if the young girl is more your style?" Elene said this and began giggling happily. She was having fun with these two, she hoped they could continue to be friends after this day. If they were friends of course, though to Elene they were. She bought Yoh and Varriden whatever they wanted from the stand then went and sat on a bench sighing. "You know, I was thinking about what you said about magic. What if you're both right, in your own ways? For example, no one actually knows what magic is. Isn't magic simply something that always has been there to help? Yet it's origins are unknown. So what if it is a force dwelling inside us, a combination of our wills and internal power, but also a force of mystery that may break it's own laws? It seems to me, since there are infinite possibilities of magic, there could be an infinite possibility of laws we know nothing of, or exceptions to previously established laws." After Elene finshed she took a bite of her potato, found it to be rather good, given the cart it was prepared in, and began to eat slowly. Edited by Giltread, Mar 27 2014, 11:49 AM.

The day had moved on without them and evening was approaching. The sun had already slumped beneath the mountains in the distance though its dying light bathed the sky in vibrant hues of orange, purple, and red. Takeshi felt revitalized as it came over him - baptized by that light - and moved by the profoundness of the quiet it lent his soul. Gone was the rain of the morning as well as the arc of light that had led him to such a chance meeting as the one he was, quite surprisingly, still happily mired in. It was only in good company that one could lose track of time as they had. As was the usual case with philosophical discussions theirs quickly turned circular as opinions were shared, explained, broadened, and overlapped until the three reached a consensus in confessing they were no closer to understanding magic than when they had first began the topic. In Takeshi's case he was not troubled by their lack of conclusion. The abstract understanding each possessed was enough for him; he didn't need to know every intricacy of a wonder (much as he might like to) in order to understand that it was indeed, wonderful. He had genuinely enjoyed their exchange of ideas and the human company that had come with it. Painful as it might be to admit, Takeshi was willing to privately acknowledge now that socializing might be something he needed in his life beyond the masquerade of Yoh-Shino. Though he was unlikely to ever truly give up his predilection for introversion it rang as truth that there was more to learn from life than reading books could provide. Books, for all the passion he poured into them and the knowledge that could be gleaned from their vellum pages, could impart nothing more than words already spoken. There was a comfort in human interaction that had refreshed him, body and mind, and would no doubt prove a worthwhile expenditure of time in terms of its effects on his efficiency and observations once resumed. In relation to Veriden in particular Takeshi was at last satisfied that the other man understood his point. Takeshi's irreverence for his own magic and the archiving of others abilities was born not of a disinterest in magic in general but a passion for the simpler existence of it. Though the admission had been a bit shameful Takeshi confessed to being a synesthesiac as well as his suspicion that the condition - that being, the unfettered blending of his senses - effected his magic, bleeding over as a defect. It was hard to admit his flaws out loud to relative strangers but it was an admission that won him a great amount of personal calm, as if at last letting go of a long held breath. Thankfully fireworks erupted in the sky overhead to lend additional levity to a matter he wouldn't have been comfortable expanding on. Sparks of green and gold, like fireflies, streaked across the sky as the sun was finally swallowed up by the horizon. The trio had been occupying one of the picnic tables owned by the old man Takeshi'd brought their patronage to but the mossy grass along the tree line looked infinitely more comfortable.. The children that had been scampering about earlier were nestled close to their parents now on blankets spread out to watch the fireworks. Some of the sparks organized midair to blossom into shapes like shamrocks, leprechauns, and rainbows that delighted the little ones into vocal coos and clapping. Their delight was infectious and, truthfully, Takeshi wasn't inclined to leave just yet. With his arms folded and weighting the top of the table Takeshi leaned in, his blue eyes pinning Elene down as he half teasingly asked "Is the offer still open? My choice of the vendors, I believe you said -- and it seems like a fine time to get incredibly drunk. What do you think? Can you waste a little more of the night on me?" for the 4567890 billionth time in a few hours (or so it seemed like to him) he winked to punctuate his own silliness, easy in his ability to put himself out their and ready to shrug off their rejection if it came. |

Varriden watched the short interaction between Yoh and Elene, and then Elene turned to him, teasing him slightly. Varriden laughed slightly. "I'll pass, thank you. Court Mage is a bit too fancy for a title for me. That was more a thing some of my classmates would have gone with. And as for the magic, yes, I think that about sums it up," Varriden said. The day slowly began to end, the sun gently setting in the distance and sending colored rays across the sky. Their discussion on magic had Yoh and Varriden with different beliefs, while Elene believed that both of them were right. Varriden did too, technically, but not quite as strongly - and for different reasons - than Elene. Varriden simply believed that there were rules yet to be applied in some places or to some things, but the rules were still there, waiting to be discovered, while Elene seemed to believe that their beliefs were equally split. Whatever works, I suppose, Varriden thought to himself. At least they managed to agree to disagree. They chatted for awhile longer - Yoh even admitting to a condition that affected the senses and spilled over into his magic at times. So that's why he can 'see' the magic, Varriden thought with interest. The trio watched fireworks as the evening wound down, Yoh eventually offering to spend more time with Elene and himself - a rather open suggestion given his somewhat hesitant stance earlier that day. "Ha! The way you said that, I thought you meant you just wanted to be alone with Elene for a bit, the same way you thought you were intruding when you met us at the tree earlier today," he said with a chuckle. "Sure, I can hang out for a bit longer. I've got no place I need to be anytime soon, after all. The whole reason I was hanging out in the park in the first place." Whatever transpired after that moment would forever remain a mystery to Takeshi. Whether Elene made good on her offer and bought the first round he couldn't recall, but Takeshi figured he must have consumed a sizable amount of alcohol to have ended up in the predicament he was. Bare chested and beyond hung over, mounted on the back of the carp fountain, he had apparently spent the night in the park. It took him longer than he'd ever admit to blink the blurry-eyed lingering effects of his binge from his vision but it did him no good -- both Elene and Veriden were nowhere in sight, but Takeshi was ok with that. Perhaps it was even better this way. He had a feeling that he'd done more than a few foolish things the night before and had no want to be reminded of them.... Takeshi groaned, face in hands, as another pang shot through his head. Yeah, definitely time to get home. Asprin. Potasium. A shower... his basic needs in order of relevance. Unfortunately the foreign songstress was gone as well. Her music wove in and out of the few memories -brief flashes- of the night before that he could recall; even in foggy recounting the notes she plucked raised goosebumps on his skin, or was that the cold? The sun was just cresting the mountains which meant the dew that misted the ground had yet to be evaporated. Between that and the fact that he'd spent the night in the fountain Takeshi, shivering, was more than ready to head him. He would have collected his shirt, jacket, and shoes if there had been any sign of them in the park. Takeshi could only imagine the strange figure he cut walking home in nothing but designer jeans and a pink scarf. Blushing, he tugged the bold accessory a little higher over his chin so's the obscure the lower half of his face and -hopefully- the blush that was creeping across his high cheek bones. It was only when he made it back to his place that he noticed the note scrolled across the inside of his forearm in a feminine hand. Takeshi slumped back against the front door - closed in a hurry behind him - before raising the tagged appendage to bring the writing to eye level. "Call Me, xxx - xxx - xxxx" it read. No name, just a smiley face with hearts for eyes. Takeshi groaned as the hazy memory of a bold woman (and her over-ample breasts) flickered into remembrance, but he paused midway through rubbing the ink off himself with his other hand when his eye caught the gold lettered spine of a certain book nestled on his shelf. It was the same reference of runology Veriden had been reading. The tentative connection established between the three of them - even without the certainty of a future meeting - earned a crooked grin from the mage. Maybe he'd find the time to record a tech or two before he crossed paths with the other archivist again. |

Elene woke up the next morning groggy. She never drank before and last night she may have had a little too much to drink. She could remember quite a bit of the night, but after Yoh went off with that woman she never saw him again. Elene sighed as she sat up from the bench she was laying on. Not many people spend the night in a park, but then again most people don't drink themselves into unconsciousness in a park. Elene smiled though, she had fun last night, despite the headache she awoke with. Varriden was nowhere to be seen, although she had expected as much as Yoh was also missing. She walked over to the old man's cart, though it was closed as she had expected. She hoped to catch a glimpse of one of the two Archivists though she didn't have much hope. She walked between the trees, feeling the cool morning grass on her feet, touching the rough bark of the trees with her soft hands. She liked the feel of nature so close to her, she felt happy, smiling. She already missed the two mages, although Yoh seemed like a ladies man after last night and she was offended slightly that he left them alone. Elene stopped all of a sudden, remembering one thing that had happened after Yoh left. She had kissed Varriden. A blush rose to her cheeks as she smiled remembering it. She hoped he didn't remember it as well as she did. She put her right hand, the index and middle fingers, up to touch the sapphire at her neck. Luckily last nights events hadn't robbed her of that treasure. Though her dress was the spare green one she carried in her bag, and looking into the bag her blue dress was torn and needed mending. She remembered she had changed before kissing Varriden. Maybe she had used it as an excuse to steal a kiss, since it was Saint Pat Rick's day after all. She smiled again, remembering Varriden's gold eyes. They were very pretty in retrospect, though she will probably never see him again. She leaned against the same tree she had met Varriden at and remembered the events of the previous day. Yoh was the mysterious type, Varriden the bold state-the-obvious type. She admired both trates although she admired the knowledge Varriden held. He was a genius, whether or not he knew it himself, Elene was sure that he was. He was raised in an Academy after all. Though she forgot to ask which one. Too bad, though he would probably never return there so it wouldn't mean much. Elene stood back up, walking to the fountain. Her face didn't feel that clean and there were some dirt spots on her dress. She scooped up some water and washed her face and dress as best she could. Today was a new day, and new days should always be taken with a smile. Who knows, the two mages must still be in town, so she could run into them again. She smiled slyly, thinking of how to trap one if she could. She giggled as she thought of what Varriden would do if she hugged him. Probably freeze up and be shocked, as he didn't seem to know much about romance and the like. Though it would be a friendly hug. Today was going to be a good day for Elene and she could tell, it would be a good day for all three of the previous nights' party. The Fairy Mage, and the Two Archivists, all three would go on from this day on remembering the fondness of a day spent goofing off with friends. Who knows, maybe Elene will run into one of them again. Definitly worthy of a smile. Edited by Giltread, Apr 7 2014, 12:13 PM.

Varriden spent a few hours with the two, conversing and taking small sips of his drink - he'd seen the combination of alcohol and magic go awry before when he classmates tried it in the academy. Usually ended with something on fire. Yoh seemed to get the worst of it, heading off with a woman he'd met while there, while Elene seemed to get just enough to knock her out for awhile. Varriden himself ended up fine only because he was careful to drink sparingly from the offered glasses and mugs. He walked home through the streets, following the brick-lined road through the park that was softly lit with street lamps on one side, casting odd shadows across the grassy plain that covered the middle part of the park as a night breeze wafted gently across the field. Those two were....interesting, Varriden thought. Granted, he found all mages interesting to some extent due to his magic, but those two had been fun to hang out with for awhile. Elene had been the more innocent of the two, he suspected, but Yoh had been rather secretive about his own magic. He'd admitted that it was Archive, but anything more than that was speculation at best. Maybe someday I'll get the full story from him, Varriden thought, his hand idly tapping the spine on the book of runes tucked under his cloak. At least there was a more directly practical benefit to this little venture, he reasoned, holding one hand out, palm up, as an orb of light with slight bubbles of light around it - Elene's Fairy Flash technique - glowed faintly in his hand. Practical indeed. He let the glow vanish as his hand dropped. I wonder what kind of techniques she'll possess in the future.... |
