Rakir carefully pinned his newly acquired four leaf clover to the collar of his jacket as Alexis overcame yet another of the trolls dastardly riddles. lacking a mirror to examine his stylish new piece of green attire, Rakir had to content himself with craning his neck so his chin touched his chest to satisfy himself that it was securely in place and didn't look outright retarded to boot. With these criteria satisfied to an appropriate standard, he raised his head just in time to see the trolls reaction to Alexis's latest subtle... okay so maybe not that subtle... provocation. "You've clearly proven yourself adept at answering my riddles, but that's only half the battle, human. You think yourself able to best me in a contest of wits, then let us put the shoe on the other foot. If you or your companion can give me a riddle that I cannot answer then I will consider myself beaten- the bet that brought me here lost and I will leave this place. But if you cannot, then the victory will be mine and you will both leave and not bother me again." Rakir raised an eyebrow with mild surprise at this declaration. partly because he hadn't considered that in order to be considered a superior riddle master then of course you'd have to present more difficult riddles, but also that they'd just moved so abruptly into the final stage (or so he hoped) of their mission and if he r Alexis (hopefully Alexis) could throw a riddle at the roll that stumped him then they could be on their merry way, collect their reward for a job well done and maybe even get some lunch. Gesturing for Alexis to come to him, Rakir spoke to her in a low voice that the troll would be unable to hear. After all, this was a team meeting and he didn't want the troll to know what they were talking about and ideally, he'd waste precious brainpower wondering or worrying about it. "This is our best chance to finish this without violence. You've taken us this far, so I feel that if you're up to it, then you should take the first stab at asking him a riddle. I do know a few if we get into a pinch though". |

Alexis, smug as ever, was proud of her numerous times besting the troll at his own game. She was confident that with Rakir providing her back-up that they would be able to completely and utterly counter each and every riddle throw at them. However, what she was least sure about was what they were to do about this latest challenge. They were the ones who had to provide the riddle. If it was one that he could not answer, then they won and he would forever leave the village alone! Sure it sounded simple enough, but it could be argued that it was easier to solve riddles than ask them, because you certainly didn't want to give a riddle that you yourself couldn't answer for starters, therefore you actually had to know the answer. Not only that, but given this troll's boasting and evidence of having a vast arsenal of riddles it wasn't going to much of a shocker if he happened to know all the riddles throw at him. Just the same though, if she could perhaps give him one he hadn't heard before it wouldn't be too much brain power, even for a simple fellow like himself, to figure it out. Alexis would be the last to admit it openly, but believe it or not she wasn't that great with asking the questions. Poking holes and figuring things out was the easiest bit, but actually deducting what to ask was far more confusing. Now that the gauntlet had been thrown down to them, it was a challenge to figure out what should be asked. A good riddle was the obvious answer, but what was a good riddle exactly? The most confusing and difficult riddles to solve were often those that got you mind stuck on seemingly illogical possibilities. Something like 'getting wetter as it dries' sounds impossible and because of that it can become difficult for someone to solve. In addition, a good riddle should be worded very carefully. Careful word choice can certainly lead to misleading conclusions on the receiver's part as well as add to the overall trickiness of the riddle. This riddle had to have all those elements, careful word choice and misleading information, and something Alexis actually knew the answer to. Sure Rakir said that he knew a few, but really this was a matter of pride! After all her boasting and confident displays at besting his riddles, Alexis most certainly had to be the one to out wit the Riddler! As she was deep in thought, a natural state for Alexis, the most harmless creature slithered its way over towards them. Breaking her concentration with a surprisingly loud hiss, this long green snake had raised its head a bit to survey the area. It seemed to be a pretty harmless snake, and it would have remained so arbitrary that it wouldn't even have been worth noticing, except for the fact that it was evidently hungry, or thirsty, or perhaps tired, or maybe it even needed a burping or something similar to that for snakes. The point is that it seemed to be unhappy and due to this it continued to rapidly and loudly hiss. Something so insistent as this hissing couldn't be overlooked and because of that it was constantly breaking her concentration. Unable to simply block it out, Alexis had no other choice, kill the snake or maybe just scare it far far away!! Kinda bolstering herself up, Alexis tried to make herself look big and bad while taking out her guns and kinda waving them about to scare the snake away. Unamused the snake actually looked confused at what was going on, why was the woman looking like a buffoon? A few moments passed where the two of them stared at each other, confused about the situation they were in before Alexis just took a "fuck it approach". Aiming both her guns towards the snake she shot out two bullets in front of it, a pair of warning shots if you will. Surprised and perhaps a bit scared, the snake practically leaped up in the air before hurriedly slithering over towards Rakir! Annoyed with the situation, mostly because it was slightly embarrassing for herself, Alexis shouted out a riddle towards the troll. "What is as big as an elephant, but weighs nothing at all?" |

It was the first time Rakir had seen Alexis waver in her proud and confident persona as she hesitated momentarily before accepting the trolls challenge with a sharp nod of her head. Rkir didn't know if it was courage, brashness or perhaps a little of both that kept the knight always forging ahead almost irrespective of the situation, but he couldn't help but admire that about her. he knew himself to be more reserved and inclined to critical thinking before comitting to any course of action and at times he wished he could behave with a little more reckless abandon- relying more on his gut and his instincts rather than his logic and reason. maybe he was even a little jealous, but then again he knew that his way of doing things came with certain advantages too and the grass often did seem greener on the other side. Rakir was distracted from his introspective reverie by the sound of gunshots- causing him to flinch and his attention immediatelysnapped to the source of the sound- one Alexis Day holding a smoking gun but there was no immediate sign of what she'd fired her gun at- or why she'd fired in the first place. However, a frantic hissing sound and the soft scrape of scale on stone and looking down, he saw a snake- a humulus nivera (otherwise known as the Mongolian Death Asp) to be precise- slithering desperately in his direction. Not wanting anything to do with such a dangerously named creature, Rakir summoned a small sphere of flame no larger than a golf ball and with a flick of his forefinger sent it soaring into the path of the snake, causing it to veer off at a right angle and in an impressive feat, slither up the stone wall of the bridge and drop over the side into the water below and attention returned to the troll as it gave its answer to Alexis's riddle. "That's your riddle?" The troll asked, its face deadpan and its tone... disappointed. "With all your big talk, I expected something challenging but instead you give me this?" With a sigh, the troll made a vague gesture with his hand before speaking a single word. "Shadow. The Elephants Shadow is as big as it is, yet it weighs nothing. I sincerely hope that's not the best you can do or this will be a disappointing end to our contest indeed. perhaps yoru companion can do better?" The troll asked, its gaze shifting to Rakir once more. Regarding the troll silently for a moment, Rakir finally nodded once and then began to speak. "I am the beginning of the end, and the end of time and space. I am essential to creation, and I surround every place. What am I?" It wasn't an incredibly difficult riddle and rakir certainly knew more complex ones, but in truth he didn't want it to be his riddle that won the day- he felt that if possible then that honour should go to Alexis- not that he'd risk shaming her by saying so. |

The troll seemed to not be very impressed with what Alexis was throwing down, well that was just fine. She didn't need to impress him, who was this random troll to her anyway? Alexis had a job, a man, an outstanding display of style and pizzaz, this troll had nothing. He ain't shit, and most certainly wasn't kawaii. Alexis? Well Alexis on the other hand was fab as could be and clearly the baddest bitch around these parts that no ug-o troll was going to do anything about. So what he knew the answer to some childish riddle that she pulled out at the last second, big whoopdey doo, what did he want a medal or something? Big oaf could just go ahead and get over himself for all Alexis cared, and while he was at he, the troll could slit his throat and drop dead into the dried up river below the bridge. Mouthing off to her like he some big riddler or some shit, as if she could possibly give a damn. His riddles were some weak ass baby shit that couldn't stump anyone ever. That was the truth of the matter, but no he gets one riddle of her's right and then... Boom! Suddenly he's some big shot riddler, like she hadn't shitted on his riddles not even a minute and a half ago, solo. No help. No assistance. Nothin'. This troll needed to get put in his place real fast, his ego starting to get an uglier look that his ass-face. Not that Alexis cared at all about him getting her riddle right, but Rakir needed to start to pull some weight. The knight had to admit that Rakir's riddle was a bit more complex than her own, though not by much mind you. It should be more than enough to stump the big oaf of a troll right in his tracks. It took even Alexis a minute to figure out the answer, only a minute though since she was so swift and sharp that nay not one single puzzle could stop the ever turning gears that were Alexis' mind. Now while the riddle seemed to be something profound and head scratching worthy, it was actually incredibly literal and simple. Obvious thoughts about such grand comments often led to some philosophical and ideological ideas about some grand creator or some such other, but that was precisely the point in this case! The words and phrasing used were done just so to make your mind drawn to this thinking instead of interrupting the words as they were literally spoken! In fact the literalness of the words was so simple it was silly. The letter E was the answer! the word "end" starts with an E and the words "time" and "space" both have an E at the end while the phrase "every place" starts and ends with the letter E! The whole thing was a trick from the start! Confident in Rakir's choice of riddle, Alexis had a bit of a smirk on her face that the troll would end up over thinking the whole thing and end up in the wrong. Unfortunately that wasn't so. "Pah, this is nothing more than a simple spelling riddle. The letter E! That letter fits the description of everything you listed, psh how foolish would you have to be to say the answer in the riddle?" The troll scoffed at Rakir's riddle, perhaps proving that he was indeed simple enough to not be fooled by such grand thinking concepts that Rakir's riddle attempted to pull at. Practically showboating now, the troll had to be stopped. It was so much simpler before when they were answering the riddles... Alexis was thinking up a complex riddle to ask the troll, but stopped as a certain idea came into her mind. This troll said he was from the cold mountains? That could prove useful since there may be certain things he wouldn't know about due to his seclusion from most of the world. Going with this angle in mind, Alexis worked up a riddle that would stump him. "What goes around the world but stays in a corner?" Alexis spoke to the troll, giving him his next riddle to answer. |

The corner of Rakir's mouth twitched upwards in a faint and momentary smirk as the troll easily overcame his riddle and he casually shrugged his shoulders skywards in a gesture of mock apology- not that the troll noticed in his current elated state of mind. In truth, Rakir wasn't sure if he'd really expected the troll to fall for such a deceptively simple riddle- the troll had after all already demonstrated an apt understanding of their language and whilst this was impressive for a troll, it simply wouldn't do to keep underestimating him on account of that fact. This troll was not one from children's bedtime tales or medieval legends. As for Alexis's next riddle, Rakir had to wonder if she was deliberately trying to lull the troll into a false sense of security, she honestly didn't know any difficult riddles or she was hoping that on account of being a troll then he simply wouldn't be familiar enough with society to know the answer- which of course was a stamp as it was placed on the corner of an envelope which then enabled it to be sent anywhere in the world thanks to the wonderful invention of the global post service. Sadly however, it seemed that the troll was indeed up to speed with such inventions, as he wasted very little time and even less effort in answering the knights riddle. "The answer is a stamp. At first I was amused, but now I'm just insulted. If this is the best you two can do, then take your leave now so that I can resume my duties", the troll yawned and he did indeed seem to have lost the spark of interest that he'd had earlier when he'd fired riddle after riddle at Alexis. It seemed that it was time for Rakir to step up and give the troll something to keep him interested for a little longer, or perhaps even defeat him once and for all. "I am one and I am small, but give me nothing so I can become large. But don't stop there, take me away and add nothing again and there's no limit to what I become. What am I?" The riddle was one of his own creation- in a sense. He'd amalgamated a number of riddles to make his own, just in case the troll had heard one of the others before. After all, if this was the first time the riddle was spoken, then he couldn't possibly have heard it before, right? |

Alexis was certainly disappointed that the troll was able to answer this riddle of hers. She was feeling pretty confident and proud in her choice of riddle, since she had guessed that he wouldn't have a clue about the postal service or anything similar to that. The troll lived up in the mountains for crying out loud, how was he supposed to understand that concept of a stamp and what it could do? Perhaps they actually had post offices up in the mountains just in case someone wanted to send letters up to the trolls. Not that that idea seemed likely by any means, because if the other trolls were like this one it was amazing that they all didn't just beat each other to literal death. Point is that they're annoying and Alexis would have most certainly left by now, but she had to complete her assignment and that meant she would have to continue conversing with the lowly troll. Rakir didn't waste any time going straight into another riddle, this one seemed to be pretty complicated to say the least. Alexis hadn't heard it before and while with most of the other riddles she could zone in on a word or two to make sense of the riddle this one was quite the challenge. It seemed like it was something similar to the riddle he used before, distracting with thought provoking word choices by saying things like "I am one" and "take me away and add nothing" which is fairly loosey goosey speak for some bigger concept. If the riddle was good enough to stump Alexis then it was already a huge step towards beating the troll, because if she couldn't figure it out then it wouldn't be likely that the troll could either. A grin on her face at her companions accomplishment, Alexis was confident that the troll's reign of riddling terror was about to come to an end here as the long chain of riddles and answers seemed to almost come to an end. The troll's face went through a few waves of expression over the course of this next riddle. At first he was smug off his win against Alexis, that expression stuck onto him fairly well as it was one he was used to wearing. Victory in word games was something of a forte of his and since he spent a good bit of time bullying the old villagers here with riddles, his smug grin become more and more crooked over time. However Rakir's riddle quickly changed his face around. For just the slightest moment the troll's eyes widened, most likely the reaction to that realization of "Oh my god, I don't know it!" and in response to that he put on something of a thinking face. Pondering the words and trying to compile parts of other riddles he knew to get an answer, the troll spent at least five minutes thinking it over before clearing out his throat. "A very admirable effort for such a simple human. You almost had me with your tricky words, but thanks to my vast knowledge of riddles I was able to come up with the solution. There is no such riddle and therefore there is no answer to it! You can't trick me!" The troll somehow admitted that he didn't know the answer to it, but phrased it so that there wasn't an answer to Rakir's riddle? A bit strange to Alexis as she assumed Rakir had the answer, but if there wasn't one then perhaps the troll was actually right? Only Rakir would know. |

Rakir was rendered speechless by the trolls response, but not because the troll had bested him. No, in fact as it so happened it was quite the opposite. Rakir's homemade riddle had just bested the troll and although he attempted to bluster his way through it by trying to bend logic and reasoning in a desperate scramble for the answer, but it was a feeble efort and the troll knew it. "Unfortunately, this riddle does have an answer", Rakir said casually and the trolls expression became fierce. "Explain it then!" It demanded and Rakir happily obliged. "To begin with, the riddle clearly states that 'I am one', which literally mans the number one. by adding 'nothing', it really means add zero and then you have ten. By taking 'me' away and adding 'nothing again' it means to take away the one and add another zero, which leaves you with the symbol for infinity- two zero's together and hence the answer to my riddle is infinity." The troll said nothing and did nothing after hearing Rakir's explanation. No doubt puzzling it over in its head and as the seconds ticked by without response, Rakir was beginning to fear the worst- that the troll would refute his riddle or say that it was unfair or in some way attempt to get out of their arrangement. However, at long last the troll bowed his head and sighed. "I can find no fault with your riddle, human. It pains me to admit it, but you have bested me according to my own rules". he troll sighed and straightened with whatever pride he could muster. Unsure of what to say, Rakir simply nodded graciously to show he heard and understood the troll words and the implications behind them. Nobody could accuse him of being a bad winner. Without further ado, the troll turned away from the pair of humans who had met it blow for blow in a game of wits and come out on top and began to lope away with surprising speed. Within minutes, the troll was barely more than a speck on the horizon as it returned to its mountain home far away from human land. only once the troll was out of sight did Rakir turn to Alexis. "Well, that didn't turn out at all like I thought it would, but it was actually sort of... fun", he admitted with a rueful chuckle. "Shall we go back tot own and let the folks know they've got their bridge back?" he asked and jerked a thumb towards the town in question. |

Of course the troll was wrong and hadn't a clue about the answer to Rakir's riddle. Simple logic followed Rakir's riddle, the very beginning of which was cleverly disguised by being incredibly literal instead of something less tangible. Pained and beaten, the expression on the troll's face was clearly one of disappointment as he was left with no other choice than to admit that he had lost at his own game. The combined efforts of Alexis and Rakir had not only solved everything thrown at them, but had in fact returned the favor to him by out riddling the riddler. As the troll set his own standards for the bet, and being surprisingly loyal to their word, he was forced to walk back towards his home in the mountains to await whatever laid in wait for him be it shame or a bride. A gracious victor, Alexis gave the troll a wave good-bye as she watched him depart into the distance before turning towards Rakir with a huge grin. "That was great! Good work with your riddle." Alexis complimented him before embracing him in a strong hug of appreciation. "Alright, now that that's settled time to go back to the village." Alexis agreed with Rakir's suggestion. Leading the way in town, it had seemed a small crowd of the elderly were in wait for their return. Eager to see if they people they managed to get out here to handle the problem were actually able to or not, they were sure to be happy as Alexis and Rakir's return meant that they had won. The pair of them had bested the troll and in an entirely bloodless exchange, had recaptured the bridge for the town's use. "Hooray! You did it!" An older man among the crowd cheered for the pair that returned. Another successful mission in Alexis' books, she'd be glad to tuck this one away among her others. Even better she had met a pretty cool guy in the process, Rakir. A brief wave of applause and cheer went through the crowd before the collectively started to whisper among themselves. Those old people kept looking back at her and Rakir and then back at each other in an incredibly suspicious manner. Looking herself over real fast, Alexis wondered if there was ketchup or something like that on her shirt, but no, nothing seemed out of place or anything. "Do you know what month this is?!" The same elderly man exclaimed to Alexis, half in shock and half in disgust. "Uh..." Alexis didn't even get the chance to answer before each of the elderly people proudly held out something that they were wearing and right away Alexis noticed the significance of it. Green. All of them were wearing green and neither she nor Rakir was. "As apart of being in this village you must honor our traditions and for this month, the only rule is that you must wear green proudly!" The man spoke like he was lecturing a small child now, incredibly condescending tone in his voice. "Since you aren't wearing anything of the sort, there is only one course of action for use here." The old man spoke while each of the villagers started to make fists and the few that had them, started to aggressively hold their canes. A bit confused, Alexis had an idea of what this could mean, but wasn't completely sure about it. At least, not until the first person with a cane charged at her. This was... a fight?! Alexis easily evaded his swing and with a slight push, managed to tip him over and fall into the grass. Were these old people going to fight her over something so arbitrarily stupid as this? Rakir had come a long way from his days as a shy guy who couldn't function properly around attractive women, but being hugged by Alexis was something of a throwback to those days and he wasn't entirely sue how to respond to it. In the end, he settled for standing there as un-awkwardly as possible until the knight stepped back and released him. "Thanks", he replied- talking more about the compliment about his riddle that had finally defeated the cunning troll and less about the ensuing physical display of affection he'd just received from her. Their journey back to the village was as short as it was uneventful- and believe me it was a short trip- and they were met by the townsfolk just inside the gate- all keen for word on whether their bridge was now clear and they could... well Rakir didn't really know why the old farts would need to venture out of their village for anything actually. It seemed to him that they risked breaking a limb every time they took a step. But that was what made what happened next all the more astounding and downright retarded. For it seemed that the pair had violated some sort of sacred tradition practiced by these oldies and like arthritic ninja's, they sprung at Alexis like dry twigs. With a sigh, Rakir realised that these old people were totally bonkers and given their age and frailty then all this excitement could inadvertently lead to some kind of accidental genocide and that would look real bad on his and Alexis's resumes. Sighing, Rakir stretched out a hand towards Alexis, who stood at the centre of the ageing throng and mumbled a few words under his breath, precipitating a firm breeze erupting from her body and knocking all of the so called combatants down to the grass. There was a general cry of alarm from the fallen- mostly consisting of 'gosh darnnit you whipper snappers!' Whilst some of the elderly were trying to get back to their feet thanks to the aid of their canes and walking stick. It seemed to Rakir that now would be a good time to wrap things up and return home to claim their rewards for a job well done. |

These old people were clearly out of their mind, trying to attack the very people that had came here just to help them! Alexis didn't want to hurt them, after all they were just a group of elderly people so the fact that they were about as brittle and dry kindling made it difficult to do anything to them without risking to break every bone in their body. Thankfully Rakir was able to offer a fairly simple solution to their predicament. Utilizing his magic, a barrier of swirling air surrounded Alexis and the elderly were lightly pushed back on the grass, crying out with their outdated insults and slurs. Slowly making her way away from them, Alexis wanted to make sure that none of them would try any funny business when she turned her back, but they all looked to be struggling just to stand upright, so it was probably fine. Following Rakir's lead, Alexis left the village with her mage companion. Their assignment was completed successfully so there would hardly be any complaints and this could be filled away in the 'Easy' folder as this was a cut and dry task. Once a safe bit away from the angry elders and their strange customs, Alexis decided that she should formally thank Rakir for his help before heading back to her own home in Chrysanthemum. "I'm used to working with mages on my assignments, but you were an interesting break from the one I usually work with. That's a good thing, by the way. Anyway, just wanted to say that it was a pleasure working with you Rakir. You're one smart cookie." And deciding to end it on that, Alexis gave Rakir one last hug before taking a different path than him to home. Grinning slightly, Alexis was already imagining telling this story to her friends back home. [Mission End] |
