Sarcasm. Because beating the shit out of people is illegal.

As Alexis pitted her wits against the troll and so far seemed to be coming out of it on top, Rakir was left with not a whole lot to contribute to the affair. Not that he minded of course, the weather was nice, he was in good company- troll notwithstanding- and there was no pressing danger confronting them that had to be dealt with. Being as widely read as he was, it went without saying that he'd known the answers to both riddles so far, but Alexis seemed to genuinely be enjoying the riddle match and so he decided that he was content enough to simply watch and offer assistance if it became necessary.

So with that decision made, Rakir moved to the closest side of the bridge and hoisted himself up so that he sat with his legs dangling over the inner edge as he faced the two contestants in this battle of wits and turned his face up so that the warm sunlight kissed his forehead and the gentle breeze caressed his cheeks. Why couldn't more of his missions be as easy going as this one?

"Oho, you think you're quite clever I see. You haven't done badly so far, but these are riddles even the children in my tribe can solve. So now it's time to make things a little harder", the troll declared. Although the content of his speech could be considered boastful, his tone- gravelly as it was- sounded as though he was simply stating a fact. So as promised, his next riddle was a level up from the previous ones. "If you look, you cannot see me. if you see me, you cannot see anything else. I can make anything you want happen, but later everything goes back to normal". Upon completing the recitation, the troll folded his arms once more and watched Alexis expectantly. So far, this human had shown much promise and if she continued to do so then maybe the troll could have some real fun!

Once again a feeling of pride came through Alexis as the troll had no other choice than to admit that Alexis was correct in her riddle response. True this was a lot less satisfying than the first one, which was actually somewhat understandably difficult, but the second one she had just answered was boringly simple. The troll was right to say that children could answer the questions, because frankly they could, any child could. These "riddles" seemed to be designed for that very purpose to be answered by kids. Once again Alexis found herself forced to wonder about the intelligence of the elderly people living here in the village. Sure they were aging and naturally their brain power just wasn't as young and spry as it once was, but still these were bottom of the barrel kiddy pool kind of questions. Then again that was the very reason her and Rakir were here now, because the troll couldn't be handled by the people in town.

The trolls next riddle was a bit surprising for the knight. It wasn't one she had heard before and this one was certainly more complex than the others, a bit difficult to say the least. Naturally, Alexis wasn't about to just concede to this riddle, it was only the third one after all(!), and ask Rakir for some help. Rakir actually seemed to be otherwise occupied with taking a soft nap on the grass, and while that kind of blatant laziness reminded her of a certain knight with similar bad habits, in this one case it was fairly fine since Alexis was more than capable of handling this on her own. The knight just needed to think about bit by bit. The first bit had 'If you look, you cannot see me. If you see me, you cannot see anything else.' Frankly this part didn't make a ton of sense to her, but when it got to the ending part about not being able to see anything else when you look at it, she thought it could perhaps be the light. If the riddle had ended there then that would have been her guess, but the second bit made it a bit more difficult.

The following line was 'I can make anything you want happen, but later everything goes back to normal' which clearly spoke to hallucinating or dreaming or something like that. Something where you imagination would run wild thinking of whatever little thing you wanted and gave it to you. Since this bit had less possible answers, Alexis focused on it in relation to the first one. Really Dreaming and imagination both worked here in a sense, but based off the first bit the Private was leaning towards imagination. The reasoning was simple; imagination was the kind of thing that you could try your hardest to find and be completely void of it, or you could not even try to use it and have an abundance. It was one of those things most apparent when you weren't looking for it and that was why Alexis answered imagination to the troll. Stunned by her actually being able to get a response, this troll simply blinked a few times while the knight had her arms triumphantly crossed. "Mhm, I answered your riddle and now you have to answer our question!" Alexis spoke in a matter-of-fact kind of tone and attitude before realizing something fairly important. "Hey! We didn't get to ask a question after our last answer! Now we get two questions to ask now!" Alexis shouted at the troll, who simply rolled his eyes in response to respecting the offer. Since Alexis was going to make such a big deal about it and everything, he might as well answer their two questions now.

Rakir wore a faint smile as he watched Alexis triumphantly overcome another of the trolls riddles. It was refreshing to see someone smile as much as she did, although Mihairi would have given her a run for her money to determine who was the more cheerful, bubbly and bright between the two of them. Rakir couldn't help but feel that if the pair of them walked into a dark room then their collective cheer would have illuminate it as effectively as any light bulb. At any rate, Rakir's train of thought was interrupted as Alexis reminded everyone that there were questions to be asked and they now had two to spend in a manner of speaking.

"Tch, very well then. Ask your questions then so we can get back to the things that actually matter. Like riddles!" The troll said impatiently, his arms folded whilst his foot tapped incessantly against the stone bridge and Rakir suddenly found himself included in the proceedings once again as both the troll and Alexis were looking at him expectantly. "Why's everyone looking at me?" he asked with mock indignation, but the troll being the clever sod that he was took the opportunity to use up one of their questions. "Because we're busy with riddles and you're not. Next question?"

Well played troll, well played indeed. Sighing, Rakir straightened up and put his mind to the task of coming up with a question that wouldn't be so easily sidestepped or misinterpreted like his last two had been- although let the record show that he was reluctant to count that second instance as a legitimate question. "Where did you come to this region from?" Rakir asked after several seconds of thought. He'd thought about asking the troll more about his motives, but something told him that he'd need to find another angle to approach that subject from and so he had something else in mind- assuming Alexis could keep answering the troll's riddles like she'd been doing thus far.

Reluctantly, and while doing his best to be vague, the troll answered Rakir's question after a short delay. "I came down from the mountains to the east". Then, like a puppy eager to play with a new toy, the troll turned back to Alexis and launched straight into the next riddle and this one could prove quite tricky indeed. "Often talked of, never seen, ever coming, never been. Daily looked for, never here, still approaching, coming near. Thousands for it's visit wait, but alas for their poor fate, tho' they expect me to appear, they will never find me here."

Alexis wasn't sure how the question neither she nor Rakir asked counted as one of their two questions to ask, but there was simply no arguing with a troll. No matter how right you may or may not be the troll would never admit fault despite being bombarded by countless facts and reasons it would be the equivalent of talking to a brick wall. Their second questions, Alexis had deferred to Rakir to ask, as he seemed like the type who could carefully word things. Successfully asked and answered without evasion, the troll revealed that he came from the eastern mountains, though somewhat vague it was better than his last answer. Quick to get back on the riddle train, his voice became noticeable giddy as he thought up his next riddle. Somewhere, Alexis suspected, there must be some massive book full of jokes and riddles that were meant to tickle the bellies of young children and unfortunately ended up in this troll's large green hands.

It didn't really matter either way, with riddles and questions of this caliber, Alexis would easily be able to complete this assignment all on her own, a bit of a shame as she was a supporter of everyone contributing something. Then again one could and should ever wipe their own ass, and in this case it was so easy Alexis could wipe over and over again without a problem! That was until an unexpected difficulty came up. The troll seemed to have leveled up his riddling ability, by a significant measure by Alexis' count, as she couldn't simply know the answer right off the back. Not one to be so easily defeated the knight pondered on the riddle for a bit, wondering what the lines could mean, but ultimately came up blank. From the sound of it it was something that could only be in front of you. It was something that you could only look forward to and never back at. A rather tricky thing it was, as it really made you wonder what even fit that category. Stumped, an annoyed frown came on Alexis' face as she hit a mental roadblock.

The troll looked quite smug, his cocky pose growing cockier with each extra minute passing that Alexis hadn't answered. The other three were answered so swiftly that the fact it was taking so long for Alexis to get this one right, meant that she most likely hadn't a clue to figuring it out. Alexis' eyes sheepishly glanced towards Rakir, sending a mental message to urge him to throw his hat into the ring. Alexis was a bit too prideful to admit that she didn't know the answer, especially in front of the one asking, but if Rakir would just answer it for her then Alexis could add on something like 'Yeah! That's what I was going to say!' or maybe something like 'Beat me to it ol' chum!' not that they were exactly old chums or anything, they had just met after all, but it seemed fitting to their situation.

As Rakir watched the sparkling surface of the river coursing beneath him and spotting the occasional fish beneath the crystal clear water, it occurred to him that something wasn't quite right. lacking any sense of urgency, Rakir pondered the sensation that something had changed- something that had been present in the background but suddenly wasn't present any more and then it hit him. There was no background where before, the steady back and forth between the troll dishing out riddles and Alexis responding with the answer in quick succession. Turning back to see what had happened, he found that neither the troll nor his companion had moved from where he'd last seen them, but Alexis was looking significantly less boastful whilst the troll had seemed to absorb Alexis's former smugness and it didn't take a genius to take a guess as to why- the troll had finally given her a riddle that she was having difficulty with.

However that was only a guess on his part and he definitely didn't want to jump in where his assistance wasn't wanted- or required. besides, he hadn't even been listening when the riddle that had given the knight pause for thought had been recited. But at that moment, Alexis's gaze flicked over to him and caught his eye for a moment, but that moment was enough as he read the unspoken request for assistance behind her steel blue eyes. Never one to leave a friend in distress, Rakir hopped down from his perch atop the bridges railing and stepped up beside Alexis in what he intended to be a comforting gesture. "Could you repeat the riddle for my sake?" he asked and the troll, clearly eager to stroke his ego even further by stumping Rakir as soundly as he had Alexis was only too happy to oblige. "Often talked of, never seen, ever coming, never been. Daily looked for, never here, still approaching, coming near. Thousands for it's visit wait, but alas for their poor fate, tho' they expect me to appear, they will never find me here."

The troll said nothing after finishing his recitation, but the triumphant gleam in his eyes made it clear that he thought that this battle of wits had reached its inevitable conclusion, which is why when Rakir spoke, it nearly fell over in surprise."Tomorrow., Rakir said with quiet confidence. "It's like the old saying goes: tomorrow never comes, but everyone has wished for tomorrow to come at least once in their lives, but when 'tomorrow' comes around, it's already become 'today' and tomorrow is still ahead of us". The troll recovered from its surprise fairly swiftly, although it now seemed to regard Rakir with a little bit of begrudging respect rather than outright contempt as it had when it had spoken to him earlier.

"It seems the woman isn't the only one with a head on her shoulders", the Troll grumbled before volunteering- for the first time- to answer their next question. "Hurry up and ask your question, I already know which riddle I'll use next". Thinking for a moment, Rakir soon found that his next question came easily. "Why did you come down from the mountains alone?" This was a loaded question if only because he was essentially asking two questions in one in so far as that the trolls answer would a) shed light on the trolls reason for emerging from obscurity and b) informing them if other trolls had also ventured into the civilised world and the glare the troll gave him suggested that it knew this too, but there wasn't anything it could do about it and so with a sigh, it spoke.

"I came here because of a bet I made", it shrugged nonchalantly. A bet? Seriously? Rakir bit back the urge to press for more information, knowing they'd need to solve another riddle first and the troll didn't need any urging to provide them with one. "Why do your uncles, aunts, and cousins all depend on you?" The troll looked from Alexis, to Rakir and then back to Alexis as he awaited one or both of them to solve this latest riddle, although it was a different kind of riddle to the ones that had preceded it and this- it hoped- would cause them to approach it with the entirely wrong mindset.

Alexis was very thankful to see Rakir take her up on her glance. Being able to communicate thoughts and ideas through just simple eye contact was an incredibly important, life or death, level skill that not many could say they had. True answering riddles for a troll on the edge of some beyond dated village may not have seemed like life or death, but the stakes here were Alexis' pride. What, if anything, could be so important to a woman that they would sully their pride and admit, openly for all to hear, that they did not know the answer. As if that wasn't obstacle enough for the young knight to remain stubbornly 'thinking' the troll had this smug pose and grin on his face that would have made the most saintly person filled to the brim with contempt. When someone had that kind of expression on their face, who wouldn't have wanted to defy them and smack their face up and down the sidewalk.

Even though Rakir did step in from his rather lax position looking into the river, Alexis was surprised by how quickly the mage was able to get the answer to the riddle. Alexis had thought that it would have taken him a bit of thought to solve and decipher the riddle, though perhaps he had been listening in while pretending to not to pay attention and spent that time solving it, either way he played it off very well. He was confident, but not too arrogant about it which truly spoke back to shame the troll for his arrogance. Really it was deep mental cycle of thwarting one another in a 'showing a humbly superior attitude to a right smug ass' kinda contest which really could be amounted to 'one uping' someone. Well maybe Alexis was giving the troll a bit too much credit for this, but anyone could have realized the kind of tension in the air going between the members on the bridge.

Back to the matter at hand however, the one that actually dealt with ridding the elderly of this riddle filled troll. A bit of his origins were revealed, coming down from the East mountains simply on the whim of a bet? That was quite the thing to do, even for a man- well troll of his word- it took quite the amount of time and effort to go through this whole charade, though it obviously helped that he enjoyed his riddle telling. His next riddle though seemed to have dropped a considerable amount of difficulty as Alexis quickly picked up on it as being one of the cheesy word play riddle that she would sometimes use on Makie. It was simple enough because the list of family relatives sends your mind in a different course, but really it revolved around the use of the word "you." While based on the sentence one would think that "you" would be y-o-u it is in fact not. "You" sounds exactly like the letter "u" which it what is really being said here. If you consider that than the sentence makes total sense. Why do your uncles, aunts, and cousins all depend on "u" (As in the letter) it became a lot simpler. "Hah, this is super easy. Your uncles, aunts, and all your cousins depend on you because they all have 'U' in them!" Alexis spoke back with full confidence in her voice. The troll may have stumped her once, but she was quick to bounce back!

"Oho! You're full of surprises", the troll chortled heartily as Alexis passed its change of tact without missing a beat. Rakir was impressed both by Alexis's quick wit, but also the wit displayed by the troll at such a cunning move. Perhaps if it hadn't been quite so telegraphed that the riddle was cut from a different cloth then its plan would have succeeded- although then again, against most day to day travelers it would no doubt have been more than sufficient to throw them for a loop. Thus, with the completion of another cycle of riddles and answers, the onus had once again fallen on him to ask the troll another question.

"What was the exact wording of the bet that brought you here?" he asked, as the troll looked at him with an impatient gesture for him to spit out whatever question he had so he could return to riddling Alexis to its hearts content. Apparently more enthusiastic with its new playmate and less so with trying to be difficult in answering the companions questions, the roll once again answered promptly and with minimal beating around the proverbial bush. "That there was no human in the land who could beat me in a game of riddles", it replied proudly before turning its attention straight back to Alexis.

"Four men sat down to play, they played all night 'till break of day. They played for gold and not for fun, With separate scores for everyone. So when they came to square accounts, they all had made quite fair amounts. Can you the paradox explain, If no one lost, how could all gain?" This time, the trolls face was blank of any sort of smug superiority or boasting, but instead there was a twinkle in its eyes that hinted at something else entirely... that it was having the most fun that it had had in years and all thanks to a stupid bet.

From where Rakir was standing though, the big question was the troll had made such a bet, with whom the bet was made and the conditions for winning the bet and, if not the same, the conditions for getting the troll to return to whence it had come in the first place. So many questions, so many riddles. Alexis was going to have her work cut out for her, that was for sure.

Alexis was pleased that they were getting closer to finding out the mystery behind why the troll had come down from the mountain. A bet that simply challenged his ability to be unbeatable in a game of riddles. This probably seemed to be like the truth at first when the only people he was questioning were the simple old folks who, bless their hearts, were about as dim as the dirt they were a few months away from being under and weren't much of a challenge for anyone's riddles, let alone this troll. Even though he was big, green, repulsive, smelly, and an utterly a sultry seadog, Alexis had to admit this guy had quite the arsenal of riddles up his sleeves, not that he had sleeves or long ones at least, but still he stored his large trunk of riddles somewhere. After answering Rakir, the troll faced Alexis once again in order to face off in their own battle of wits. Only one time previously had Alexis had to phone a friend, aka ask Rakir for some help, but otherwise she had been able to perfectly match the troll's wits and answer his riddles quickly and without a problem. Well technically she hadn't actually asked for help on that one riddle, Rakir had just butted in with his own answer. Yeah, that was the answer that Alexis was going with and so in her mind she still had one emergency answer method left should the need arise.

"Hm..." Alexis spoke while thinking intently on the riddles. Her finger and thumb cupped her chin in thought as the knight tried to wrap her head around the scenario. 'Four men sat down to play from night to day' was the first line for her to look at. What could she take away from this that would be useful? 'Night to day' was an obvious start since that was most likely a clue as to what they were playing. Something that would usually go on during the night, something like night tennis or midnight skinny dipping? Were though group activities though? Maybe a one on one kind of thing at best, but hardly anything more to Alexis. The fact that there were four men to do this and that they had to sit down to play were important. Something like a board game then? The men were playing for gold and not just for fun, according to the second bit, which would mean that there was money to make here. They all had separate scores, naturally for any kind of game where they were going to make money, but the word 'score' didn't sit right with Alexis. Something about it seemed not entirely natural and because of that, Alexis took this to be a fairly important clue into discovering the answer.

Moving onto the last bit that provided the most paradox of riddle, the bit about how not a single one of them lost, but they all gained money. Right there it was really confusing since gambling in general meant that you were giving up something for the chance to gain a lot. Due to that, Alexis figured that they couldn't possibly be playing Poker or something like that. What that led to then was the question of what were they playing? Since they had all sat down to play at night, Alexis assumed it was something like a board game with wagers on the side, but that also didn't make sense since not a single one of them lost money, so they couldn't have done something like wage bets that could have been lost. What were they playing that only gained them money? It almost sounded like some kind of get rich quick plan to sit down and play all night and then make money! Wait... this sounded pretty familiar to something else Alexis knew about... MUSIC! The music industry has people playing their instruments! Brilliant, because that would make total sense with each of them having a different score as a score could be something related to music! Ok, ok, they played a gig or something at night and then they all got paid! Basically they had a job and did that job and then got paid for doing said job. Huh, for some reason Alexis was hoping for a little more flair in the answer, but this would suffice.

"I've got it!" Alexis announced triumphantly as she pointed up towards the sky before lowering her finger, pointing right at the troll. "You're little riddle almost had me with that paradox, but a little deductive thinking and knowing that you would be trying to play with the words to through me off, actually gave me a clear answer! The 'four men' part of the riddle is completely irrelevant to absolutely everything else, what is important is the fact that they 'played' all had 'separate scores' and that 'none of them lost'. What's clever about the last bit is that it could be taken as they all gained, which made sense since they were playing for gold from the start!" At this point Alexis took the time to pace back and forth the length of the bridge for a bit of extra dramatic effect to her explanation. Alexis was quite enjoying herself with this deductive game they were playing right now as it made her quite intelligent figuring it all out. "Going with that train of thought we can conclude that they were doing a job. Now while playing games can get you money, it usually costs others their wager and since no one lost money it's more likely to think that they were playing something else... something like music!" Right then Alexis turned on her heels and with a strong step towards the troll pointed a finger of victory at him as she came to his conclusion. "To sum up the men were playing music all night long and then they were paid in gold. Easy peasy lemon squeezy is what I'd call this riddle." Alexis wrapped up her conclusion with a rather witty line if she had to say so herself, and ended up with a smirk on her face that the troll over there would have to have been more than accustomed to by now.

The troll was deathly still as Alexis laid out the reasoning for her answer to his latest riddle. From Rakir's perspective he wasn't sure if the troll was disappointed that Alexis had gotten the right answer, or was about to let out a triumphant roar that he'd finally bested her. As it turned out, it was the former of the two that turned out to be the truth and the troll let out a deep sigh before fixing its gaze on the knight and where before there had been amusement and excitement, now there was something else. Something new and it signaled an unspoken turning point in this battle of wits that waged between them. "Your next question?" The troll asked quietly of Rakir, its eyes never leaving Alexis even as it spoke.

"What happens if you win the bet and what happens if you lose the bet?" Rakir asked immediately, having had ample time to decide on the exact question he wished to have the answer to. With a soft snort of grim amusement, the troll finally turned its gaze to him. "It's not so simple as winning and losing, human. My tribe prides itself on riddles and wits- so long as nobody bests me then I will remain here as the Vak'arsh- loosely translated to 'Riddler' in your language. But if I'm bested, then I must return to my tribe and take a bride". Rakir nearly choked upon hearing the troll's response- the startling view into the culture of this particular troll and its tribe coming way out of left field.

Considering its answer to have been more than satisfactory, the troll turned back to Alexis with a glint of steel in its eyes that indicated that at long last, it was ready to start pulling out all the stops to bring honor and glory to its name and most importantly- avoid the ball and chain of marriage. "Long ago, there were four brothers who were all born together. The first runs but never wearies. The second eats but is never full. The third drinks and is always thirsty. The fourth sings a song without words. Who are these brothers?"

Before Alexis could answer, a strong breeze swept through the area and brought with it a cloud of flowers petals, grass clippings and leaves from the nearby field that lay on the far side of the field. Watching the spectacle with laid back interest as it swept over him like a cloud of green, blue and white when the breeze passed, he found that something remained behind- sitting delicately atop the end of his nose. Idly raising a hand to pluck it from its perch, he was amused to find a four leaf clover between his finger tips. "I guess it's my lucky day", he mused under his breath with a faint smile playing on his lips.

The stipulations for this bet were quite... unusual to say the least. This bride back at his village must be one ugly son a troll to get this "lovely" creature to run from the mount-side down here in this community. That or this guy was just not the type to take to the female trolls up in his village, because who in their right mind would want to be a 'Riddler' for what could be all of eternity, or until someone beat him, whichever came first. Actually that made Alexis wonder just what was happening now. Hadn't she and Rakir answered a considerable number of of riddles since they arrived? What was he still doing here if they had bested each and every riddle he threw at them. Well naturally Alexis would have loved to have asked this question outright, but knowing the kind of creature this troll was he wouldn't answer until his latest riddle was answered by Alexis and that meant that she would actually have to try and solve this one.

It was a bit of a doozy as to be expected, but given the fairly obvious symbolic... metaphorical... whatever literary word would go here that meant these all stood for something more than what they actually are, Alexis found it to be rather simple. They were all born at the same time, read that as they all came into existence at the same time. Now from the words "long ago" it would be pretty easy to assume that the troll meant a really, really, really long time ago. Ancient time. Primordial time. These "brothers" should be all in somewhat equal standing with each other since they were all born at the same time, but doubly so since they were also primordial. Now what things are usually considered primordial? Well if you asked random people on the street, who knows what they would respond with, but usually for literature it is something along the lines of fire, water, earth, and wind. Now the only thing left to do would be to see if these fell in line with the descriptions of the brothers the troll gave. One of the brothers was always running, but never got tried. That would fall in line with the wind since it blows without fail and it quite quick, hence the use of running to describe it. The next one always eats, but is never full. That falls in line with the fire as it always burns and eats up whatever it touches, but it is never full as it will always burn again later. The third brother is forever thirsty though he always drinks, which is obviously in line with water since it uses the words "thirsty" and "drinking" in its description. The last one would default to earth, but not without reason as its song- read as earthquakes- are never good for anyone.

"Huh, well if you're trying not be bested then I suggest you try picking riddles with a bit more difficulty." Alexis replied to him with a smirk as she had quickly figured this one out. It more a matter of making sure her answer fit with his question than anything else. "Something as childish as this wouldn't stump anyone. The four brothers are obviously the wind, fire, water, and earth. The four primordial that coexist with one another that are always doing something while wanting more." Alexis finished up her explanation with a hand raised in the air as a breeze swooped by. Waiting until a four-leaf clover happened to float by and into her hand, Alexis grabbed it firmly and held it in front of the troll. "I guess it's not your lucky day." Somehow the knight managed to say it without missing a beat and soundly as smooth as butter.
