Fear does not exist
|
"Hit or stay, sir?" Ludo stared almost unblinkingly at the cards in front of him. He'd found himself in a strange predicament earlier that evening. He'd finished his daily activities of thievery and drinking, and found himself with some extra jewels. Which just wouldn't do. Money burned a hole in his pocket almost instantly, and he'd decided to take a trip to Trillium to test his luck in the casinos. So here he sat at a Blackjack table, switching his gaze back and forth between the cards in front of the dealer and himself. The dealer was sitting at a comfortable 17, but Ludo had been plagued with low cards. Between 4 cards, he had 8. And he was on something of a losing streak. He'd been at the table for awhile, and his money had slowly dwindled, until he only had enough for one final hand. Needless to say, he was a bit cautious. "Hit or stay, sir?" the dealer asked again, a hint of slight irritation in his voice. Ludo glared at him, expecting him to flinch or turn away, but the man calmly met his gaze. He wasn't used to it. Normally his appearance alone gave people a slight pause when speaking to him. He was in a blue and gray striped shirt, done up in a makeshift straightjacket. The left sleeve was tied to his right side, but on days when he needed hands, he ripped his right arm free of it's restraint, much like this day. His long green, uneven sweatpants and short, spiky black hair practically screamed hoodlum. And yet the people in this town didn't react at all how he expected. Unable to cow the man with his stare, he returned his eyes to his cards, calmly stroking his chin with his free hand. "Hit me..." The dealer drew a card from the top, a 6, putting him at 14. His only option was to hit again. Before the dealer even asked, he motioned for him to draw another card. Ludo swore violently when the man laid out a 9. "Apologies sir. You bust. The house wins," he said, casually pulling the last of Ludo's money off the table. Ludo stood up from the table so suddenly, he knocked his chair over. "Bullsh*t. You've gotta be cheating. There's no way in hell that I could lose that many times." Rather than be frightened, the dealer gave him an amused look. "I'm sorry sir, but that's how the game works. You bet. You lost. That's it. Come back next time when you have some more money." Ludo leaned across the table and snarled "Give me one good reason why I shouldn't beat you senseless and take my money." "I'll do you one better. I'll give you 5. Security!" On cue, several hands grabbed Ludo from behind, hoisting him up in the air. As he struggled, he looked down to see several large, stocky men carrying him towards the door. "Don't think this is over! I'll be back!" No sooner had he said it he was tossed outside, flying through the air and landing on a nearby bench. His momentum broke the bench beneath him, and he lay in it's splintered ruins for a moment, catching his breath. "I hate this city..." |

It was one of those rare days for Nathaniel Deveraux, better known as Green to many people, that he could actually do what he wanted. Though unfortunately the person he had hoped to do something with was busy with Guild shit. Whilst he was glad that Hikari was a high-class mage, it was also annoying at times as she'd usually get held back or unable to be free from the Guild. Not to mention that some of the other Raven's had taken it on themselves to keep reminding Green that Hikari was B-Class whilst he was still at D. He ignored them however since most of this talk came from other D-Class members, who were easy to beat up. Though in most cases Green just walked away and ignored them, he didn't really care what they said as he was as strong as a C-Class, perhaps even at an early level of B-Class. Well, no matter. Green was out on the streets of Trillium as he fancied some time away from the Guild and Casino life, but he wanted a drink so inevitably he found himself heading to another casino. Which - surprise, surprise- was actually owned by Raven Tail, in fact the majority of clubs and casinos in Trillium were owned in some way by Raven Tail. Giving a flash of his Guild Tattoo to one of the security guys at the door, Green had no trouble entering and soon found himself sitting at the bar with a small glass of rum in his hand as he started to drink it slowly. However, no sooner had he started to drink did something escalate at one of the nearby gambling tables. Some guy seemed to accuse the dealer of cheating which soon had the man being carried away and most likely thrown out of the club. Though the man's determination by him saying that he'd be back was interesting, his voice having echoed enough for Green to hear him. The guy didn't seem to be familiar, then again Green was usually cooped up in the Guild Casino rather than anywhere else in Trillium. Taking a quick swig of his drink, Green soon got up and left and decided to follow the man out but minus being thrown out. Stepping out of the casino, he soon walked over to the man who seemed to be grumbling and just laying on the ground underneath a shattered bench. Looking down at the man for a second, wearing his usual outfit that consisted of a suit and sneakers. "You're lucky you just got thrown out." Green said as he soon perched himself on a nearby stone. Fear does not exist

After a short moment to radiate pure loathing towards the Casinos, Ludo began to dislodge himself from the bits of the broken bench. He had his hand on a stretch of lumber, ready to shove it off of his stomach when an unfamiliar voice made him pause. "You're lucky you just got thrown out." He looked around for the speaker, and found him sitting a short ways away. At the angle he was sitting, Ludo had to look almost directly behind him, so at present he was "upside down". The man's expression was difficult to read while upside down, but he wore a suit with matching jacket and bottoms. Looked as if the man were dressed for the Casino, so he had either been heading inside or he had followed him out, though at present Ludo wasn't concerned with it. Returning his attention to the task at hand, he heaved the broken bench remains from his chest, knocking aside any others that were too close, before rising to his feet with a huff. He spared a rage filled glance at the Casino as he dusted himself off. "I would say they're lucky that I don't burn this place to the ground. Or rather, that I'm here by myself..." He'd started to piece together why he wasn't drawing the same reactions from back home. The people were reacting the same way business owners in Coreopsis acted with rowdy customers or with wannabe tough guys, almost like they didn't care, like it didn't concern them. Truth be told, they didn't need to worry abut much from outside sources, because they were well protected by Tartaros. Which meant that this town had a gang or some other guild that carried a fair bit of muscle, and the people felt at ease. The lack of surprise or fear on the faces of many of the patrons and even the dealer didn't strike him as odd anymore, taking all that into consideration. He would have made good on his threats, or tried to at any rate, had he not been alone in possible enemy territory. He wasn't particularly worried about the Knights, since the worst they would probably do was arrest him. But since he didn't know who ran the town, it would be in his best interest not to cause trouble. Which was unfortunate, because he so loved to cause trouble. Ludo suddenly became aware that he'd lost one of his flip flops while being tossed out. As he squatted down to root through the bench debris, he glanced back at the man. "I'm guessing you live here, right? So tell me...Who runs this town?" No point in being ignorant, and who better to ask than a resident? If he could find out who ran the city, maybe get a good lay of the land, he might have some useful information to use one day. One could never be too prepared |

The man before him was surprised perhaps, though he seemed to be focused on getting himself off of the ground and broken bench. Green watched as the figure stood up and dusted himself off, angry at the casino obviously before making a comment about burning it down. Green chuckled, he could try if he wanted though he'd be hunted down and killed most likely. However it seemed that this man was all talk, the last part of the 'threat' tipping Green off about the 'all talk' personality. Whatever the case, Green watched with a little amusement as the man soon squatted down and began to look for something before looking up at him and asking about who ran this town. Now the man had caught Green's attention, his interest peeked a little. He did not know much about this town it seemed, there were few explanations that could cover him though. One was that he was not from Fiore; a traveller from another land perhaps. The second was that he was closed off from the world and the last was that he had no idea about the land in general. "I'm from around here yes," Green began, speaking in a simple enough tone as he continued to watch the man. "And if I had to guess, it seems you're not from around here. Perhaps not even from this country." He continued, he pondering the last part himself as the man didn't seem to look like he was from another country but there was a possibility. "To be honest, I wasn't expecting such a question. It's hard to say just 'who' runs the city, be it the Mayor or the guild." Green finished with a little smirk, he had spoken the truth and supplied an answer to the man even if it was not the exact one he was looking for. Whilst in truth the city had a Mayor, in fact all the cities had a Mayor but then again the city of Trillium had changed since it was nearly completely destroyed. Raven Tail having taken up charge more or less run this city now, it wasn't like it was before. Trillium was darker and more shadier than it's one clean predecessor. Actually, did Trillium even have a Mayor or was that something he had just been told like so many other citizens? Just some false information, but hell in this 'new Trillium' the Mayor would most likely be a member of Raven Tail, failing that he was probably bribed. |

As Ludo rooted around in search of his footwear, he kept his head cocked to the side as he listened to the man's explanation. For all the good it did him, he may as well have not wasted his time asking. He glanced over his shoulder at him in time to catch the man smirk, and a frown creased his brow in response. He turned back to the task at hand, grinding his teeth silently. It was obvious that the man knew, but he didn't want to tell him. He was playing dumb, either to protect whoever was in charge or simply because he didn't feel like telling him. Or maybe he honestly didn't know. There are some things that are well known to locals, things that they know they shouldn't or can't do, especially in a situation like this, where a city was under the thumb of a group or person. It hardly mattered anyway, since the reason didn't effect his current situation in the slightest. "Is that right..." he muttered, almost to himself, as his hand finally found what he was looking for. Like King Arthur drawing Excalibur, Ludo pulled his flip flop from beneath a small pile of shattered bench, holding it up at arms length to shake any splinters from it. Satisfied that it was free of any bench remnants, he slid it back onto his right foot, tapping the toe of the flip flop against the ground to secure it onto his foot. That problem solved, he was now faced with a new one; a way to gather as much information as possible before heading back home. It wasn't that he was particularly determined or vengeful, but rather that he had nothing better to do, so why not waste his time in a useful fashion. His only lead at the moment was the man behind him, who was clearly hiding something. His options were limited, considering his situation. He could try to beat the information out of this guy, but since he didn't know him, he had no idea of the influence he carried. He could actually be the very person who ran the city for all he knew. Even then, he could have friends in high places, who would no doubt make his search a short one. Better to play it safe. Time to put his acting skills to the test. Turning around, he gave Green a nod."Right then. Well I don't know where the hell I'm going, so show me around." Half a second too late, he realized that the way he had spoken was the wrong tone. Out of habit he'd given an order, rather then asked. "I mean...You seem like the well informed type..." he began again slowly, "So surely you know all the hotspots in town, right? Why not be a pal and help me out?" That actually wasn't much better. It still wasn't quite what he was going for, but it was good enough. He couldn't go about bowing and scraping, no matter where he was. He fixed Green with a mixed expression, that half said "Well, you gonna take me?" and the other half said "Come on, you're taking me, right?" |

Green was satisfied with his answer even if the man before him was not, however it seemed the man was onto him as it were which was definitely an interesting note about him even if he was looking for a flip-flop, he spoke once before he pulled out his missing footwear from underneath some of the broken bench in triumph. After the man had placed his flip flop back on and stood up he appeared to wonder what he would do next but soon he had turned to Green and gave a nod before speaking. First it was asking to be showed around seeing as Green was, as the man said, 'the well informed type' which to an extent he was, particularly about Trillium. The second part of what the man said seemed to be more of wanting to go and see the nightlife, which actually didn't sound that bad. Green was off-duty so to say and so with a smile and a nod, Green stood up and walked a little before he turned to the man. "Come on then, there's more bars down this way anyway and all I want is a drink." Green said with a bit of a smirk before starting to head off at a steady pace past the casino the two had just came from. As he walked though, Green soon pulled out his lighter and pack of cigarettes before lighting one up and sticking it in his mouth, the stick hanging out of his mouth a little. The pack and lighter soon returning to his pockets, though he turned his head a little to speak to the man, "You want one, stranger?" He asked, offering the man a smoke if he so wished but at the same time and in a subtle way had also asked for the man's name though it didn't really matter if the man responded with his name as well, Green would just ask for it afterwards. After a moment or two of walking down the street that had numerous people walking about, groups of friends, couples and what not they would soon arrive outside of a club of sorts. Though it was more of a large bar rather than an actual club, a mixture of the two perhaps. "This place is nice, though depends on what you're looking for really." Green then said as he came to a stop and looked at the bar before them, it had a rather relaxed feel to it, the building itself having large windows on the outside to show inside just like a restaurant. The name of the building was 'Alhem's Bar' and was pretty easy to see as large letters were printed on a sign just at the top of the doorway and of course, it was a Raven Tail favourite. |

Ludo watched the man carefully after he'd spoken, but the man's eyes betrayed nothing. He seemed so nonchalant it was almost annoying. He smiled, nodding as he stood up and lead the way. He hadn't quite flexed his acting skills, but he'd gotten what he wanted, so it would do for now. As the man lead them past the casino that he'd been so unceremoniously thrown from, Ludo cocked his head to the side before spitting at the door. "Sh*tty place," he muttered, turning to follow the man again. As they walked, he rooted around in his coat pocket before withdrawing a box of cigarettes and a lighter. He lit one up and gave it a slight puff before offering one to Ludo. He eyed the carton with distaste before declining. "Smoking isn't my thing. I much prefer drinking. And don't call me stranger. Sounds weird. Call me Bones," he said, waving away the offered cigarette. As they walked, Ludo got a good look at many of the people who lived in town, both children and adults alike. He recognized some of the looks of anxiety that were on some of the older people's faces, like they were expecting something to happen at any moment. He saw that look whenever he was in Coreopsis, when people thought they were in trouble with the guild. It only solidified his suspicions that the town was under someone's thumb, it was only a matter of who. He was so lost in thought, he didn't notice when a soccer ball came hurtling towards him. It hit him in the chest and he jumped slightly, more alarmed then hurt. As he looked down at the ball, several kids ran forward, stopping short once they saw that the ball had stopped at Ludo's feet. They seemed uncertain whether or not they wanted to get the ball back. Grinning slightly, Ludo put his foot on the top of the ball, sliding his foot backwards until the ball rolled almost perfectly onto the top of his foot. He kicked the ball up in the air to about the height of his head, bouncing it off of his knees several times. One of the kids laughed, but was hushed into silence by his friends. Knocking the ball higher, Ludo began bouncing it off of his head. The children hadn't quite loosened up, so Ludo gave it up as a lost cause. He twisted his head and bounced the ball forward, catching it between the crook of his foot and ankle. He held his foot out, offering the ball to them. One of the kids slowly stepped forward, daring to reach out to try and grab it. Quick as a flash, Ludo kicked his foot, sending the ball skyward. It came down directly in front of him, bouncing once on the ground before the bottom of Ludo's foot connected with it, squashing it between his foot and the ground. It blew up with an audible pop, sending the kids screaming in all directions. Chuckling to himself, Ludo continued to follow his guide, unable to keep the wide grin off of his face. A short time later, they arrived in front of what appeared to be a restaurant. The words on the building read 'Alhem's Bar', and it appeared that this was their destination. "Huh. Looks promising. Well lead the way uh....uh...." Ludo cocked his head to the side, giving the man a puzzled look. "Didn't catch your name, I don't think." |

Green smirked as the man beside him spat at the casino door and commented, though Green wasn't sure if he was annoyed or just being and idiot. He declined the offer of a smoke and Green nodded contently and put the lighter and pack of cigarettes back in his jacket. The man soon introduced himself as Bones after finding 'stranger' to be too weird, chuckling to himself, Green carried on before leading them to Alhem's Bar and upon arriving outside it seemed Bones liked the look of it before inquiring as to the name of his guide. "You can call me Green, now let's go inside and see what we can find." Green replied with a smile before walking inside to the bar. Upon entering one would see that it was quite relaxed indeed, the atmosphere was light and the noise was soft. The occasional loud laugh could be heard before it was silenced and only the soft beat of music played. Booths lined the walls consisting of a round chair to seat many with a table in the middle. Most of the booths were filled with people having a night out, couples and friends and what not. It seemed there was also a stag party as well. At the back wall was the bar, several bar stools lined against the counter whilst about four people worked it. There were a few stools at the bar that were free and Green made his way there, "Two stools over there are free, come." Green would say to Bones, before he would sit down on the far right one, the next two stools to the left of him being free. Green would sit down and order a simple Black Russian, nothing to extreme at this time of the night but a good drink nonetheless. "You can order what you like, this bar makes most -if not all- the various kinds of alcoholic drinks. If they don't, then just tell them how to make it." Green would say to Bones as he sat down and as their drinks would arrive Green would then ask Bones, "So, why are you in Trillium?" |

That was a weird name, Green. Who named themselves after a color? It was like naming yourself after a shape; just plain weird. Green led the way in, and as Ludo walked through the doors he couldn't help but screw up his face. When he thought of a bar, he thought of a large room full of laughter and constant noise. And Booze. This place seemed more like a restaurant than a bar, people spread out across the building in booths and tables, some in large groups or in pairs. The lack of any real noise is what bothered him most. He glanced at Green, who was looking around himself. He drew his attention to the bar, and they made their way over to it. He'd never felt more awkward in his life. The walk from the door to the bar felt like it took eons, like he'd been dropped waist deep in mud and had to slog through it to reach his destination. This bar was simply unnatural. As they reached the bar, Ludo sat promptly beside Green on one of the stools. He wasn't much for the whole spread out seating thing, especially if he was trying to grill his host for information. He drummed his fingers on the table as Green ordered his drink. The bartender turned to him shortly after, and for a moment Ludo wasn't sure what to get. He didn't know if they had the ale that he drank, considering he didn't know it's name. It had been a house special in the bar he frequented back home, so he never bothered. "Just gimme the house special," he said with a shrug. The bartender gave him a short nod, before turning away to fix his drink. A few moments later, the bartender turned back, handing both men their beverages. Ludo's was in a tall glass, filled to the brim with a light brown, almost yellowish liquid. Pulling the glass closer, Ludo gave it an experimental sniff before taking a sip. He licked his lips slightly, before taking a bigger sip of it. Not bad. He'd been so busy examining his glass, he almost didn't hear Green's question. Taking a much larger sip, Ludo set his glass down, stifling a belch. "No reason in particular. Had some time to kill, a bit of money to burn, so I thought I'd come check this place out. I heard it's alright. Didn't know they had such lousy, cheating casinos though..." His expression darkened slightly, as he took another gulp of his drink. "I still wanna check out the rest of town. Casino was the first place I went to, so I still don't really know what else is around. But that's where you come in." |

[OOC: Sorry for the wait ><] The two had arrived at the bar and sat down at the stools and ordered their drinks, Bones having ordered the house special. Green smiled and took a sip of his Black Russian before asking some questions to which Bones replied to in kind. His reason for coming to Trillium was to put it quite frankly, to be a tourist, he made a jest at the casinos to which Green replied. "No casino in Trillium cheats except the customers if they dare, this I assure you." The tone was simple and casual as Green looked at his drink and spoke those words, the majority of casino's in Trillium were owned by Raven Tail in some way. Whilst it would be easy for the casino's to cheat there was no real benefit really, word can spread fast and if one casino got caught cheating then the customers would begin to fall and so would profits. Bones wasn't done it seemed though as he wanted to check out the rest of the town and it seem he wanted Green to be his guide. Green had no real problem with being this man's guide, "Is that so? Very well then, though to be honest I'm not entirely sure what other night life events happen. Nightclubs are for certain anything else like concerts depends on the venues." Green began before taking another sip of his drink and looking at Bones, "But what is it that you're looking for? There must be something that you are wanting to do." He added, questioning Bones on what it was that he wanted to do in Trillium. Something began to tick at the back of Green's mind, Bones had said he had heard of Trillium before. Now, it wasn't exactly hard to hear about Trillium and there were many ways of hearing about the city. So given that, the man before Green would know something about the city and to some extent what can be found in the city. So why was it that he needed Green to guide him? Perhaps it was just Green being cautious but there was that feeling and voice at the back of his head that whispered to him that something seemed off. |
