FTG's Most Gentlemanly Snake of 2016
|
The Dandelion Sector was an odd place, especially against the auburn glow of the setting sun. Tsura sauntered with obvious boredom in her naturally blank face. She took step after step on a cobbled pavement with no destination. She had come here once before, but she didn’t want to talk about it. By this time, near to everyone that wandered the streets like Tsura had taken shelter in their decrepit houses, locked the windows, doors, armed the traps and went to sleep. This place wasn’t safe for a child like her at night, but Tsura; behind her short stature, was a rather powerful mage. She could hold her own if some trouble brews up. Her train of thought, which was focussing on the delectable taste of blueberry muffins at the time, was brought to a slow stop when she heard a feeble mewl coming from in between her crossed arms. Looking down, she saw her small kitten Blair sleeping gently. Tsura sighed quietly as the sun became half-sunk in the horizon. She needed somewhere to stay. |

‘Dandelion Sector’ thinking to himself as he wandered in to town, the smell of pipe smoke and alcohol was overwhelming. The people all look like they didn’t know what happiness was, must have blended in quite well. As he continued to wander the streets he noticed a young boy take shelter in a abandon house, he seem to preparing to spend the night in there, the building looked condemned and unsafe “he must be desperate to stay there” speaking to himself; he would do this when in deep thought. He decided to watch over the boy until morning at least, so he found a place with a clear view of the building and settled down for the night. That night he dreamt of home, of his parents and of the day he left only to be awoken by a stray cat licking his hand. “Get lost...” he said to the cat expecting it to understand him, the cat ignoring him curled up next to him. Xavier was irritated but too tired to care and went back to sleep muttering the words “Can’t this day just end?” |

Honestly? Tsura was dragging her feet across the town as the gloom of the evening took her into fantasies of a forest in autumn with every tree’s burning leaves dancing gracefully to the ground. She turned left on a main street after reading a makeshift sign of “Inn this way” drawn crudely on salvaged cardboard with a scraggly line beneath it pointing right. Tsura was many things. But she wasn’t stupid. Blair the cat was still asleep in her arms as she found a strange light past a corner of the alley, it was flickering and it was fire. She wanted to turn around and find someplace else but the thought of rest was overwhelming. That is, until she saw a shadow in the fire. She sighed, knowing that going there would cause a problem for her, that’s how this little town was. Giving up on conventional means of sleep, Tsura decided to crawl under a vandalised bench and used her coat as a pillow, with Blair using Tsura as a pillow. Waking with a jolt hours into the night brought her head cracking into the wooden beams of the bench above her, making her silently grasp her forehead and roll around in pain. The noises that brought her from her sleep were that of a crash, like steel colliding with concrete. Tsura, quickly looking at her now awoken kitten who stood at full, albeit sleepy, attention just besides her, rolled out from under the bench and looked to the direction of the noise. She rubbed her head as she spotted five shadows sift into a building that held a young man with a bland face within. This man also had a cat besides him, but didn’t look amused. She couldn’t tell if he was awake or asleep from the distance but knew he was in trouble. The five cloaked individuals surrounded him; they look like they were extorting him for money, which Tsura, as a mage of Lamia Scale, could not allow. She silently darted behind a dumpster and investigated from behind the man. The five individuals looked like men with really punk-style sense in hair. The middle man, most probably the leader, was an absolute giant with his cloak hood covering his face and a piece of reinforced concrete connected to a staff of steel that looked bent into shape. The weapon looked threatening for good reason; a fine swing of that and a normal person would be a gonner. She had to act fast. Stats |

Xavier was awoken yet again but this time by the growls of the stray, craning his head to see who they were targeted at, only to see five thugs staring back. “Can I help you gentlemen?” Xavier said in a sarcastic tone know they just wanted money. “Give us all your money and no one will get hurt pretty boy” one of the thugs demanded. ’Pretty boy’ no one ever called him that before. “And if I don’t?” noticing they have make-shift weapons; bits of wood, lead pipes only one had a half decent weapon being a knife. “Then you’re gonna get hurt” the same thug said with a smile on his face not noticing the one on Xavier’s. “Zangetsu” Xavier said softly to summon one of his blades, the largest he had as a scare tactic, but they were either to brave, desperate or dumb to not run.”Fine, so who will step forward first?” he asked smiling, at that moment one of the thugs with a piece of wood swung at him. Xavier swung back cutting the wood in two and nipping his opponent’s jugular, the thug fall to the floor into a pool of his own blood. Looking back to his ‘attackers’ with a wide smile on his face he snacked “Who next?” |

Tsura observed the pseudo-casual conversation between the resting man and the bandit. Neither seemed concerned about the other in terms of danger though this show may just be tough talk, neither man looked that tough. A flash of light made Tsura cover her eyes and Blair mewl, catching the attention of another bandit. A man with a lead pipe the length of his arm and a long, pink Mohawk above his face which is covered by a fox mask began to step towards the dumpster to investigate the noise. As he walked ever closer Tsura began to worry and, at the second her turned his head to look behind the garbage reciprocate, began to transform. Snow and wind whipped around the child in a less than subtle tornado of cold that covered her from sight as she turned into a monster. When the powerful winds blew away, all that stood were a bewildered bandit and a tall, cloaked figure in old, tattered robes. The man ignored the self-preservation instinct coursing through him as he instead attacked the mysterious creature. The lead pipe swung in a dangerous arc, aimed at the cranium for a knock out blow, but it never made contact. The Wraith’s hand shot from the sleeve, a hideous mess of bone and muscle, palming the bandit hard in the chin. The man felt his feet leave the ground before pain rocketed through his skull. He blacked out the moment the concrete of the street collided with his arced spine. The lead pipe instead was thrown into the air and fell mischievously close to his unconscious body. The Wraith began to advance on the other bandits, forced to by Tsura’s ambition. It observed a man, dead by blood loss on the ground as the bladed victim of the crime challenged the others. The leader seemed untroubled by the approaching figure and stepped forward to confront it. With the rebar in his hand he held out a hand, summoning a powerful wave of fire from the palm. The cloak burned slightly but the Wraith continued on undeterred and fuelled by Tsura’s rage towards the fire mage. Beneath the several burns through the cloak were just darkness and a small slimmer of yellowish bone. The leader hesitated, confused by the lack of reaction from the strange thing in front of him. Then it ended, no quicker than it started. The Wraith had closed the gap in a few strides and brought its arm blade through the leader’s left pectoral, through his heart and out the other side. The brute spat blood and mumbled wordlessly before crumpling to the ground, dead. The Wraith turned to the final two bandits and the swordsman, its bloody long-sword glimmering gently in the artificial street light. Meanwhile, Blair was busy with a mouse that had hidden under a rock, pawing it with predatorily expectation. |

Xavier noticed that the bandits were no longer focused on him any more, taking this opportunity to attack with his reverse duo. Aiming for their necks, his blade contacted sending blood flying; both opponents fell to the floor. The smell of the blood now overpowered all others; it was so powerful that he could tastes it, but not a single drop was on his clothes. Now his attention was drawn to what made them so distracted only to see a wraith stand there. He knew that the fact that he wasn’t already dead must mean it meant that it didn’t mean him harm; he nervously nodded in thanks and turned his attention back to the boy and the abandoned house. The door was kicked in “NO!” he shouted running to the house sword in tow, it was only then that he noticed that the house was not abandoned as he first thought instead it was the boy’s home. The boy’s mother clutched the boy tightly cowering in fear as six more bandits had invited themselves in. Every one of these new bandits was armed with the same makeshift weapons as the ones before, except for one; the leader wielded a cutlass and some makeshift armour made out of some rusted metal. As the bandit started to advance on the terrified family, Xavier took a stance and shouted “HEY!” and as he wanted all the bandit attention turn to him upon which he continued “Your friends outside weren’t very entertaining, maybe you will alleviate my boredom.” The bandit leader scowled “You’ve gotta lotta nerve to challenge us, but” he started to smile as he lifted his sword to point it at Xavier “-maybe carving up a pretty boy like you will be fun”. ‘Again with the pretty boy’ Xavier thought, slightly annoyed at the comment but his thought swiftly changed to how dilapidated the house actually was; it looked like the whole building was held by a single rotten support beam. They couldn’t possibly fight inside without the roof coming down on them, so the best thing to do was to draw them outside; but how? Then Xavier thought ‘Why not just tell them the truth?’ ”You know this building would fall on us if we fought here, don’t you?” “What really?” the bandit leader said surprised by the information which turned to a smile as he said “Then let’s take this outside shall we?” now a smile started to appear on Xavier face as he thought to himself well preparing for another fight ’This night really didn’t want to end’ |

The Wraith merely stared at the long-haired swordsman, whom was the main target in the bandit’s attacks, ignoring him as he nods to the spectre and walks off. Tsura, in her mind, was silently calming herself after dealing the lethal blow to the fire mage and warding off her anger. As the swordsman wandered off, the Wraith took this time to survey the surroundings. The night made the streets of the worn-down town seem almost majestic in a way, the gloomy backlights of gas lanterns summoning swarms of buzzards that created a light show for any perceptive individual. The Wraith, more human than normal, stood silently; blanketed by darkness and admiring the unassumingly picturesque environment. As time passed, not much time mind you, the Wraith grew tired of the same scene over and over again and decided to leave the Sector, but the peaceful silence was broken by the shouts of immoral encouragement in the words of ‘Fight’. Seven men emerged from a ramshackle house, five looking like schoolboy bullies. A much larger man in make-shift, unimpressive scrap armour and the swordsman from before looked to be the main conductors in this brawl as they were the first to exchange blows. Tsura was sick of this and just wanted to sleep, so left the Wraith to do as it pleased. It wasn’t long until one man with a distinct long nose was screaming in agony as his left leg was pulled from under him and snapped in two from the bone. The two men, identical to the first, jumped out of their skins and rashly lashed out, resulting in their forearms being twisted and dislocated in unison. As three men lay sprawled in pain, the last two charged for the cloaked figure as it raised its sleeved right arm. Both advancing men were stopped in their tracks as they felt immense cold in their chests. Small cones of ice colliding with their torso knocked the air out of them and were followed by a painful poof of blue frost as the explosion took them off their feet. They landed heavily into corrugated steel, out cold; as it were. The Wraith stepped towards their unconscious selves and pulled its armblade back into the night air. The next few moments were a blur as both men did not feel the icy steel rip into their hearts. Flicking away the blood, Ikiryo sheathed its arm and relinquished its services. The cyclone of snow only lasted a second before a sleepy-eyed Tsura was left standing there and an ever energetic Blair jumping into her arms. She just wanted to sleep. |

Xavier was surprised that the wraith from earlier was really a young girl but was happy his plan succeed , he took a chance not knowing if she would engage the bandits, but nevertheless it work.” Staring back at the bandit leader terrified face Xavier said smugly “guess it’s only you and me now”, and as soon as the last word was said the bandit cried out in angry and stormed towards Xavier sword raised in preparation for his attack. Xavier took a stance waiting for the first clash of steel all the while thinking ‘I should thank that girl after this’ CRASH!!! The sword final meet in a symphony of clashing metal, Xavier withered the first blow pushing his opponent back making him stumble. Taking this chance Xavier slashed at the legs and took them out right from underneath him, falling to the ground the bandit now on the floor noticed that the armour on his right leg had shattered.”That’s what I get for using crappy metal” the bandit said crumbing back to his feet, Xavier launched another attack while the bandit was vulnerable but this time he went for the neck. The bandit only just got his sword to block this attack only to feel a knee in his gut, the armour did nothing as he clasped to his knees to receive a side kick to his unarmoured head making it smash against the cold floor rendering him unconscious. Xavier stood over his opponent raising his Zangetsu for the final blow, he put the sword straight thorough the bandit neck. After he pulled the sword free he started to rummage thorough the pocket of the fallen bandits, after which Xavier walked back into the house and up to the mother and child. Xavier said softly to them “you’re safe now” and give the jewel he had found on the bandits, the mother asked happily” what did we do to earn such kindness?” Xavier smile back and replied “nothing but for someone as strong as you deserves it” as he walk out the door. The mother smile and with a tear in her eye cried “thank you”. |
