Chapter 1 - New Region, New Troubles It all began with a Fletchling. More specifically a little runt of a Fletchling called "Cinders" that had been caught only the previous day, the day that a young man named Cain and his mother had moved to the Kalos Region. Cain was no ordinary young man of sixteen, only a year ago he had almost been declared the Pokémon Champion of the Sinnoh region until an unfortunate series of events had stolen it from him. It had been his dream since he was little to become the Champion of Sinnoh like his father before him, a father who had died when Cain was only six and who had given his mother a Pokémon egg to give to Cain when he turned thirteen - "The proper age to begin a Pokémon journey." his father had said. But all that was over now, Cain was alone and had no Pokémon to call his friends. His mother had hers of course, there was the Rhyhorn she had ridden in her younger days -and Cinders too- as the best Rhyhorn racer not only in Sinnoh but across all the regions. But then she had fallen for Cain's father and given up her career, becoming a Pokémart employee for a time and a few other odd jobs. She did what she enjoyed, Cain's mother did, not what was the best for her monetarily but just what she wanted to do. "Good morning good morning good morning!" the Fletchling sang, a bright trilling song that not only woke Cain but immediately made him grunt in annoyance, "Time to wake up and enjoy the da~a~ay!" "Damn it bird," Cain groaned, sitting up but then letting his arms fall out from under him as he fell back down, pulling the pillow over his eyes to block the sunlight streaming in from his window, "Don't you ever shut the hell up?" See, Cain was one of the few in the world with that rare gift - the ability to understand the language of Pokémon themselves. Of the millions of people on the Pokéarth less than 0.1% had this gift, a gift that was inherent and unknown as to how some people had it but others didn't. No genes had been found to explain it, nothing similar across time and cultures in the prenatal phase - some people could and others couldn't it was that simple. Cain hadn't met many others who could, only an old man back in Sinnoh and his dad apparently, nobody else so far. Maybe it was a dying gift, he didn't know as he rarely thought about it, instead he simply liked to spend his time alone, playing video games and avoiding other people. But then they had moved to Kalos and the life-plan he had had along those lines was shot in the face. His mother was sick of his moping, a change was good and she had told him if he didn't get out in this new region she would take action into her own hands. Cain hadn't known what that meant, but it didn't sound good - she had a reputation. So he had asked for one days rest, "jetlag" or something to recover after the move and she had relented, but as he lay there with his head covered by the pillow he heard something from the bird that made him jolt upright, something that he knew had his mothers influence in the events therein. "You have people at the door, at the door for you~!" He flailed for the bird but it darted out of reach, its song becoming an expose about the amazement that were Oran Berries and how delicious they were. "I swear bird," Cain said with the voice of pure vengeance, "One day I shall catch you and you shall rue the day you were hatched!" Still, the bird was a scatterbrain but it wasn't a liar -it was too young for that- so Cain began to get dressed in a whirlwind, his clothing flying around as he pulled his outfit on. It didn't take long thankfully and he was on his way downstairs quickly and ready to run out the door- "Where do you think you're going." He froze in mid-step, eyes wide and his face contorted with fear for a moment. Slowly, ever so slowly he turned to his mother, a smile suddenly on his face and sweating already. Her tone was... curious and ominous, though if pushed he had no idea how it was actually ominous. So he turned to look at her, terrified of the result... But she was smiling? "You heard about your visitors then I assume?" she said happily, bustling at her stovetop and preparing some food or another, "Good, you should go and have some fun, you've been cooped up in that room for far too long!" Something in her voice made Cain actually come to a stand still and look at his mother properly, notice the red rings around her eyes and the way she was smiling but in a watery way, clearly trying to hold it together for him. She was anxious about him leaving, she was anxious about this new region and she was still, after over ten years, missing Cain's father. Cain knew it and his mother knew he knew but she still tried to pretend like she was ok. He enveloped her in a hug before she knew it and she tensed up for a moment before relaxing, letting her son hug her. "Don't worry mom," he said in a low voice, letting go as he finished and walking to the door, "It probably wont even be anything, I'll be back later though." His mother simply sighed as Cain stepped out the door. Unlike her son she knew what was coming, and if he did come home any time soon she'd be quite surprised. The instant Cain stepped outside he knew that something was wrong, the two sillohuetted shapes before him -damn the sun was bright!- were too close and his eyes narrowed quickly as the smaller of the two stepped forwards. She was a small girl, probably about his age but petite and with enormous brown eyes and two pigtails in her hair. Her smile was... intense and a little terrifying Cain had to admit, he actually recoiled slightly as she got waaaaaay too close already and smiled at him. "Hi hi hi hi hi!" she squealed in a voice that was half like a mouse squeaking and half like nails on a chalkboard, "You must be Cain right I'm Shaun and this is Serena and we're here to make sure you come with us because Professor Sycamore wants to give stuff to five kids and you're a kid right and you make us five and-" "Shauna," the other girl interrupted the word vomit softly, "Give him a moment to breathe." Cain tore his eyes off of the mousey little crazybitch when that other voice cut through and his eyes fell on the other girl, a stunning blonde with bright blue eyes that looked at him with a mildly curious disinterest. She was so much more... woman than the other one and Cain had to struggle to keep himself from gaping at her, uh, attributes and stare at her face instead. "Hi," she said with a small smile, "I'm Serena and this is Shauna-" "HI!" Shauna practically yelled, causing Cain to :|-face her quite intensely, "I'M SHAUNA!" "Yes, anyway," Serena said tolerably, "Professor Sycamore is the professor of the Kalos Region and he gives pokémon to people our age who are setting out for the first time. We got a message this morning -Shauna, our two friends and I who you'll meet later- and we got told to meet in Vaniville town just past Route 1, and to bring you with us." "O...k..." Cain said slowly, still seriousfacing Shauna and edging away slightly, "So... what?" "Come meet us in Vaniville Town!" Shauna practically shouted, "WE GOTTA GO WE'RE LATE!" And with that she ran off with only a backwards smile for Cain. Serena sighed audibly before smiling at Cain again and setting off after the hyperactive little chipmunk person, at a slower pace but still hurrying. "Well, that was... a thing..." Cain said to himself, watching them trail away, "Can't hurt though I guess." |
