Blitz kept his eyes on the nearest doors and windows as he wandered over the outskirts of the Dandelion Sector. This place was lawless incarnate. Any crime that was illegal elsewhere happened in profusion here. Though 'crime' implied an illegal act in the first place. This place had no form of police or order - just huts strung together with bars as the only breaks in the walls of run-down houses and shacks, and people who were likely to try and sell you something as they were to stab you in the back and steal your wallet for a few jewels. He'd been here once before and had to trek a fair distance - through the sewers, no less - so he'd seen the kind of people - and landscape - that this poor excuse of a town sported. Last time he'd been given a wide berth, though at the expense of kicking an unfortunate pickpocket into the nearest dumpster as a warning to the rest when he tried to filch Blitz's wallet when he thought he wasn't looking. Something seemed a bit off to Blitz as he approached the main streets - if dirty paths could be called a 'street' in a place with no vehicles of any kind - and the problem was immediately obvious. No one was around. That was ridiculous for this kind of place. There was always someone, no matter what the hour, the day, or the weather. Someone who thought constant begging was better than a job. People who figured their chances of theft were better at night. Thugs who liked to think that weather made escape an easier task. But there was no one. Not a single soul in sight. "Something's off. This place isn't always teeming, but there's always a few folk wandering around. Begging. Stealing. There's always someone. The Vanguard might know we're here. The last one did, after all." |

The Dandelion sector... Zachary had never been to this place before and he certainly never had wanted to. A crime filled region and it was haven to many things Zachary was uncomfortable with. Even Jirachi felt the need to stay snug inside Zachary's hood where he was safe and content near his owner and friend. The star kept close, nuzzling Zachary's neck lovingly while he tried to rest. A rare occasion. However, the ethics of this area was not the only thing on Zachary's mind as they wandered the unsafe streets. He could of been happy no one else was around. Disturbing as it was, but Zachary had another thought on his mind. Doubt of their mission to defeat the vanguards. Each Vanguard they fought, after the 3rd one, had become more and more human like each time. THe last one, made friends with a young boy who thought fondly of it. The one before last was a pair of twins that acted like siblings. Even though they were not really human, they acted like it, and behaved as such before they attacked them. It was beginning to weight on Zachary's conscious as what they were doing was right or wrong. If they were becoming more and more human, did it also mean they possessed spirits and souls. If so, it was not a question of destroying them, but killing them. A guilt Zachary had never wanted to accept. "This is a bad idea..." Zachary murmured, audible for BLitz and Shoop to hear, but was left at just that, not yet voicing his thoughts. The glum look on Zachary's face however, was enough to tell BLitz that he was deeply troubled. |

Blitz turned at Zachary's words, mildly perplexed. "What? Being here, chasing the Vanguards? We've destroyed six of them already - it's a bit late to get cold feet at this point." he pointed out. Blitz turned back to the deserted streets, gazing into the distance for a moment before letting out a sigh. "I know that the last Vanguard's demise was a bit....tough....on everyone, but don't let that deter you. You saw the way she erupted into her full form when pressed - the one called Mia was less of an individual than a very complex disguise. At some point she would have assumed her true form and purpose, and without us around, the causality list could have been quite high. Remember that he's using my magic - in part - to create these things, and Takeover magic is based on life at its core. Mia wasn't a real person who was possessed, she was a mutation of the Vanguard's influx of emotional data - remember how she didn't show up on the radar? That's why we had no info. Macha's data was corrupted. Most likely Mia had just been a disguised, but a glitch made her have something of a split-personality." Blitz had been trying to take a more reasonable tone, but Shoop was more direct. "Remember, star boy - these things represent a threat to humanity as a whole. Feel free to step back if you're cool with humans being replaced with robots. Otherwise, you need to come to grips with this if you want to move on." |

"That's not what I mean!" Zachary snapped, partly offended by Shoop's words. "It's not like I don't get what's at stake, and I know they are... broken in whatever they are. I won't pretend that I understand all the core subtleties to how they are." Zachary was torn up, and his shouting stirred Jirachi from his somewhat-lazy sleep. He fluttered out and looked to Zachary, clearly upset and made the star critter sad with worry for his friend. "I get they are a danger and they have to be stop, but each Vanguard we face has become more and more human. Even if it was not their goal-- does that mean these 'defective' Vanguards are growing their own souls? If so we aren't just destroying them." Zachary his fists trembling with guilt. "How far will this go? To the point we are murduring real people? Destroying the vanguards is one thing but with that last one-- what if the others are in fact to a point human? Can we just commit murder like that? " Jirachi gave a soft ooh, not sure what he was talking about but sensing the uneased emotion to his friend. Luckily for them the setting of the empty streets did not cause any kind of scene that would put them in trouble. However, where everyone was and what had happened was still a mystery. That, however, was last on Zachary's mind. Edited by Zaber, Oct 28 2013, 02:36 AM.

Blitz sighed. "You're missing the point. Having sentience and being human are two different things. These Vanguards were never human. This guy running the show never intended to alter humanity, he intended to wipe them out and replace them with bots. We're smashing machines, not people. You're only concerned because thus far, we've managed to stop the Vanguards before any real damage was done. You wouldn't think so highly of them if you saw what they'd do if we weren't around." As if on cue, a thug stumbled out of the alley, cursing like a drunken sailor. "Shit! Stupid thing....gonna....not gonna....dammit all....won't stop bleeding....damn that thing!" The thug stumbled and fell backward, landing back-first against one of the abandoned buildings, letting out a grunt of pain before slouching down on the ground on his backside, panting. "The wound on his chest doesn't look that bad, actually." Shoop noted, eyeing the shallow gash across the man's torso. "True," Blitz said, observing the wound himself, "But he doesn't need to know that just yet." Blitz walked over and crouched down in front of the guy, who appeared not to notice him for a moment. "Damn thing, knew it wasn't a mage or summon - way too big. Couldn't be an enforcer, not here." The thug finally glanced up at Blitz, pausing, then sneered. "I see you lack the manners to even let keel over before you pick my pockets. Just leave me be, you bastard!" The thug spat on the ground to punctuate his remark. Blitz wordlessly pointed at the wound on the thug's chest. "I might be able to help you with that if you're willing to say what happened here. Buuuut, if you want me to just keep walking..." The thug cursed under breath. "Dammit all. Okay, fine. My gang got ambushed by the creature that's been stalking the town for the past few days. That was about half an hour ago. I was near the edge of the group when it came down and ran. Only thing I heard was screams behind me, so I turned to see if anyone else got away, only to get this for my trouble," the thug said, gesturing to his gash. "Now patch me up!" "Not just yet. Which direction?" "Down the alley I just came from, through the middle of town and down one of the passageways to the lower catacombs." "Thanks for the intel," Blitz said, standing back up as the thug lurched to his feet, "But your wound should be alright. Might want to go lie down, though." "Son of a...." The thug shot Blitz a glare and limped off to the shade of a nearby building, entering inside, presumably to grab supplies. Blitz turned his head to look at Zachary. "Still feel sorry for them?" |

What Blitz said made a lot of sense. He was feeling guilty and upset over the fates of the vanguards but forgot why they were so dangerous. if they had not intervened, they would of very well of let innocent people get hurt by allowing the vanguards to continue on their rampage. They may of been human-like, but they were not alive in that sense. Still, Zachary felt a bit unsure of his resolve. At that time, the man appeared to which BLitz interrogated. It was a rough and somewhat grumpy interrogation on BLitz's part. Almost uncaring. Even if the guy was some type of thug there was no reason to be so rough when he was wounded. Zachary was becoming aware of a quality to Blitz that made the guy very insensitive... As if with all those machines in his body from his magic, he seemed as if his emotions were completely detatched. Like the guy had no heart inside. While Blitz chose to leave, both Zachary and Jirachi looked to the man. Deciding better, Zachary go to him. "Don't worry. We will take care of you. Jirachi, do you mind?" Aye, sir! Jirachi replied and then cast a soft light upon the man. It was wonder aura, a spell that allowed faster healing time on lighter wounds. Luckily, it was just enough to help the man, despite the grimace he had with strangers' help. "You should be good as new in an hour or so. You're welcome," Zachary replied and with that, left to join Blitz with Jirachi close behind him. He looked to BLitz, a stern look on his face now. He wanted to tell Blitz something, but he held his tongue. It was too cruel to say and certainly now was not the time. |

Blitz glanced back at Zachary as Jirachi floated off to patch up the wounded thug. Granted, Blitz might have done that, but his healing magic only worked for him, and him alone. Unless the thug wanted to have nanobots flooded into his own bloodstream the way Blitz did. "Just because you feel misplaced pity for the Vanguards doesn't mean you should feel compelled to assist every lost soul, Zachary. This place is legendary for being completely lawless. Shake the hands of three random people here, and two of them will try to steal your wallet. If you're lucky. It's kind of like the reason people donate to charity, but only donate small sums when they themselves have obscene amounts of cash. They want to help, but know if they tried to fix the woes of every person they could possibly help, they'd be so exhausted of money and drained of energy that by the time they finished, they would be the ones needing assistance." Blitz turned back to the alleyway, beginning to walk down it. "I'm not against showing compassion to those less fortunate, but pity is preyed upon here. Had I just offered help outright and kindly asked for information after, he would have run off soon as the wound was healed. Even if he didn't mean us harm, people who are running from a monster rarely stick around to chat if they're in the condition to keep moving at a decent clip." "In short, Zachary, I don't lack compassion, I just mete it out as I see it needed. Here, not very much. He worried he would die from a monster - I got the info to......'defeat' the beast, and assured him that he wouldn't die from his wound. I'm off to conquer his fear and I saved him from becoming convinced of his own demise. I just have a heavier hand when I dole out sympathy at times." Edited by Balmung6, Oct 29 2013, 05:10 AM.

So that's his reason, Zachary thought as he listened. Jirachi floated beside Zachary now, feeling more at ease since not many people were around. As they walked towards their destination, Zachary realized it was not BLitz flaw. But his own... Blitz would have no way of knowing it, or perhaps he did after spending so much time with Zachary, but the young Fairy Tail mage was generously kind and caring about people. Even when growing up, he cared about a lot of people, even to a degree where it had caused problems for him. He would end up being bullied, viewed as a push over and beause of that it made him a target for the kids in his school. He gave too much and took too little. He was overly giving and cared about people and it made him easy to fool and take advantage of. It was a grim truth Zachary didn't like to hear, because he couldn't see being kind was anything less than a blessing. After all he been through and his desire to be a wizard to do great good in the world, he didn't want to think his kindness as such a vulnerability. While Blitz words made sense, and he was well aware of the risks of showing too much kindness in a dangerous situation like this... ... it was very hard for Zachary to ignore a cry for help. "Yeah... I get it... Sorry," Zachary replied, conflicted but understanding what BLitz said. Best he just focus on the vanguard for the time being. They just had to find it. |

Blitz sighed. "It's alright, Zachary. There's nothing wrong with feeling sorry for others and wanting to help, just that there's a time and place for it. The Vanguards must take precedence right now. We can't let the actions of one man threaten all of humanity." Blitz skipped over a puddle, moving around the side of a dumpster, landing on the other side in the dry part of the alley. "Don't worry. Once this whole Vanguard thing is over and done, things will go back to normal and such moral quandaries won't be a problem anymore. At least not with Vanguards." Blitz stepped out of the far end of the alley to a main square - there was no one here, either, but the absence of people somehow made it more ominous than it would have been even if there had been more people in that thug's condition. "Another part of Ghost town...I really hope most of the people made it into hiding before the Vanguard rolled into town." He walked across the square and over to another alley. Heading down it, he kept going until he ran into a rusted iron gate that was hanging open. Looked like it had been slammed open a bit too far - it was hanging loosely from one hinge, the rusted part unable to handle the strain of the forced exit. "Let's go." |

Zachary followed him, understanding his words as Jirachi now rested on top of Zachary's head as they faithfully followed Blitz. He had to keep focus and had to make sure they could continue to stop the Vanguards before they got so out of hands, more and more people would get hurt. Or worse. They soon arrived at a broken gate. The entire location-- with few people around and the look of obscene destruction illustrated that something or someone was on a major warpath. A shiver went up his back , telling him to be on guard. "This certainly doesn't look good..." Zachary explained aloud as he looked over the site and lightly kicked the gate. THe simple touch made another part creak and fall off. Jirachi clung to Zachary's head with unease, his little hands holding onto his hair almost to the point it would hurt Zachary, but not too much. Jirachi scawrd... he said softly, looking around for any sign of something bad. |
