"Get off my lawn."
|
”So the handling of the shield got torn off? No discount and you’re going pay up like everyone else around here.” the blacksmith said briefly while holding at a damaged shield and the Legionnaire infantry captain disgruntled about it. It was a cold night and there were long silence around the encampment, there were no noises or sounds came afar from the Hurin ruins, no doubt the barbarians were lying low in there comfortably. The wounded and the deceased soldiers of Pergrande were sent back to Fort Greymoor, new reinforcements from the capital just arrived earlier this evening. Not just some regular infantries and archers, the siege engines and a regiment of musketeers arrived here as well and no doubt this is going to be a great advantage during the upcoming retake Hurin. The blacksmith’s name is Beirand and he is not just some ordinary blacksmith, he is a seasoned but retired warrior in the House of Eorling. ”Beirand!” someone called his name, a rather youthful voice and the blacksmith looked up in order to see who is it. It was Balian Waystrider, a young Wayfarer from En Kungstad. ”Ah, Waystrider! What can I help you with?” the blacksmith in his late 40s asked Balian with his cheerful tone, which had made the infantry captain quirking his eyebrows because he only knew that the blacksmith is rather straightforward and grumpy to the other soldiers earlier. Beirand admitted that he like this kid, Balian always shown his politeness and humble to him when he is asking for something. ”Earlier just now, lady Fyndra requested 3 quiver of steel arrows… Have you made them yet? I’ve brought my coins for them.” Balian asked as he approaching Beirand who were focusing his eyes on the hammer and anvil. ”They are ready now, boy. I placed them right there, just below the armor stand. And they’re readied for you and Fyndra, free of charge too and considered them as gifts for you two. Send my regards to her.” he said to Balian while pointing his finger at the freshly made quivers of steel arrows. ”I… Thank you for your kindness and hard work Beirand.” Balian thanked Beirand with his head bowed down. Then Balian approached the readied quivers and he crouched in front of them, picked them up slowly. ”Wait a moment old man! You’ve said that I pay for you like anyone else around here for repairing or making arms! Why not him?!” the infantry captain was dissatisfied about it after what he just heard, Beirand just stopped hammering onto the hot iron and tossed it into the barrel of water in order to cool the heat. ”The boy here is a Wayfarer and yet he have shown his respect to me since the beginning of this war, did the milk drinkers like you or any Pergrandan Legionnaires show respect to me huh?” the blacksmith directly said it right in front of the infantry captain and he went silent after what he just heard. It is true that majority the Pergrandan soldiers and Legionnaires did not show their courtesy or politeness to the blacksmith when they asking for something, that is the reason why Beirand blunt, grumpy and straightforward. ”Beirand, everyone had a bad day since after Hurin was taken… Why don’t you just give him discount or I’ll pay for him?” Balian said to the blacksmith. In Beirand’s mind, this kid was too kind-hearted despite he is a Wayfarer… he also heard that he almost got killed when he defending the fleeing villagers against the barbarians alone. ”… Bah! I’ll give you discount but just this once! Sit yourself there and watch me working on your shield, who knows that you’ll learn a thing or two!” Beirand said to the captain grumpily, the captain immediately sat down on a stool near the forge and Balian sat alongside with him too. The captain thanked to the young Wayfarer in silent and Balian shook his head with his smile, a sign of “glad to help you out”. ”Beirand… Would you take up arms again to fight the Northern invaders? Like back in the old days as an Eorling warrior when you were young?” Balian asked as he sitting down on the stool with the quivers of arrows on his lap. Even though he focused on refitting and repairing the shield, Beirand heard the question and he went grim about it, ”I will if not for my daughter… and my wife. Oh, Freya is going to have my hide if I suggest taking arms and return onto the battlefields again! You think the barbarians and raiders of the North are dangerous? Ha!” Beirand scoffed while looking back to Balian who was blank at his remark about his wife while the captain went silent for a while. The blacksmith realized that that this young Wayfarer had no idea about marriages or love life, maybe he teach him a thing or two. ”You know, I fought alongside with our king during the First Northern War… During that time, I’ve met Freya. Oh, the beautiful flower of Ithil who got deadly skill with blades!” Beirand was happy when he mentioning about his wife and despite she is old and grumpy now like him, Beirand still loved his wife and his teenage daughter deeply. ”After the war, we married and we promised each other not to take up arms again when our daughter was born. That’s why I am a blacksmith now, no longer the Eorling warrior.” Beirand still busied by fitting a new handle onto his shield and turned his eyes to the Legionnaire captain. ”What about you Legionnaire? Did you have anyone waiting for you at home?” the blacksmith asked after he successfully fitted the shield with a new handle, the Legionnaire captain went silent for a while as he grabbing out a pendant from underneath of his armor and looking at it. ”Yes, my wife and our newborn son, Galerius I named him… They currently lived at En Kungstad. I hope I’m going back to them after this war.” he said grimly as he looking back to both Beirand and Balian. ”Congratulations, sir! That’s good news indeed!” Balian patted his hand onto the Legionnaire’s back and he smiled back, nodding to him as a sign of thanks. ”What about you, Waystrider? Got any girlfriend yet?” Beirand snickered when he asking Balian. ”Wait… what? Wha- No! For the love of Neira, I don’t have anyone… yet…” he stammered in his speech while both Beirand and the Legionnaire laughing in amusement. ”Don’t worry, you’ll have one soon enough young Waystrider!” the Legionnaire slapped his hand onto Balian’s back as if the Wayfarer is his younger brother and Beirand gave the repaired shield to the Legionnaire, good as new. ”Hah, boy! Like this milk drinker said, you will have a chance in the future and by the way, I hope you won’t mind me for saying me this…” Beirand said to Balian as he receiving a small bag of coins from the Legionnaire. He looked closely at the Wayfarer and Balian was… discomforting about the way Beirand observed him. ”You bears the face of… a young version of King Elessar, his youthful appearance before he become a king except you got silvered eyes as well as… a pair of elf ears. But you have his face, I wonder why?” Beirand said plainly as he focusing back onto his forge. It is true that Balian had the face of younger Elessar but the king had brown eyes and he is a human, the young Wayfarer must be a Half-Elven: a child who was born to a human and an elf. The Legionnaire is satisfied about his shield now, he was glad that the blacksmith repaired with discount and decided to respect him. ”Well… maybe because-“ ”Because this Wayfarer is King Elessar’s son, Prince Eldarion Narsil.” A hooded figure appeared at the blacksmith’s tent, it was almost scared the guts out from Legionnaire and Beirand. It was the Quendi Ranger, Fyndra Nightstalker as she walking towards to the young Waystrider. ”Randir, it is time. Did you get the arrows?” Fyndra asked the young Wayfarer who were nodded as an answer to her question. Then, the Legionnaire dropped his shield and knelt down right in front of Balian. ”My prince Eldarion! Forgive for my insolent behavior earlier! I didn’t know that-“ before he could finish his apology, Balian quickly held the Legionnaire to rise up. ”At ease, captain! Right now I am a Wayfarer among the Wayfarers and a brother to the Legionnaires and any other Pergrandan forces… I also hoped that this war ended quickly, so you can go back to your wife and your son.” Balian patted onto the shoulder of the Legionnaire captain. Beiran was struck in silent and shock, now he remembered one thing. After becoming a king, Elessar married to his beloved elven ranger Undomiel and both of them had a son, Prince Eldarion Narsil of Pergrande and the prince was Half-Elven. ”And Beirand, my father regarded you highly as a Eorling warrior… He was proud that you fought alongside with him and he was glad that you threw down your arms for the sake of your family… Now I must go along with master Fyndra and the rest of others into the Halls of Nienor, I’m glad to talking to you, Beirand.” Balian said with his smile and he began to walk alongside with his Quendi teacher, they are joining the others at the south east in order to begin their journey to Halls of Nienor, a secret passage into the capital of Hurin. Beirand sat down onto his stool dumbfounded, and then he looked at the Wayfarer’s back. ”… Good luck, boy.” he said quietly with his wry smile. Edited by The Templar, Jul 16 2013, 07:35 AM.
