As he watched the two speak, Marcus couldn't but manage the faintest of smug smiles. The two were obviously much closer than they let on. They were even talking as if they knew exactly what the other was thinking. In all the short time that Marcus had known Ecclair, he had pretty much figured out that she wasn't the most emotional of women; Marcus wondered what kind of experiences she had had with Juto to build such a rapport between the two. As it was, Marcus listened intently as the two senior officers began to explain the situation. Their answers made sense; with Oshibana being little more than a pit stop, it was likely they wouldn't have much authority from here at all. They would probably up and run the moment Marcus and Ecclair tracked them down. Marcus began to scratch the wood of the table absentmindedly, still paying attention to the on-goings, but amusing himself as he took in the information. He saw Juto pass the Sergeant a small device and her getting up. Marcus, on the other hand, stayed in his spot. "I'll, uh, catch up with you, Sergeant." He said to Ecclair. Despite meeting the Juto, Marcus couldn't get any reliable idea of who he was. All he knew that he was a friend of Ecclair's and a seemingly capable fighter and commander. Still, it was obvious that this man had more to him than met the eye, and Marcus would like to find out. He wanted to stay a little longer to speak with Juto, perhaps he could learn a thing or two. Marcus got up from his chair and went behind the counter of the bar, looking for something to eat. Luckily, he found some beef jerky wrapped in cloth, bread, and water. Pleased with his discovery, Marcus took them out made himself a sandwich and went back to the table. "So, Juto..." Marcus said, lowering his voice so only Juto could hear. "I don't think I'd be mistaken if I were to guess that you and the Sergeant go way back, right?" Marcus had a look in his eye, however, that made it clear that their was an ulterior question. He could spot it from a mile away, Juto was head-over-heels for Ecclair... even Juto did have a reputation for being a womanizer. Despite his question, Marcus had to wonder if what he thought was true. He ate his sandwich as he watched Juto. Edited by Marcat, Jul 22 2013, 06:18 AM.

As much as the Corporal would likely think that it was simply because she liked to be prepared, Ecclair had a few reasons for offering Marcus a chance to prepare for the task ahead of them. The first reason was that she had no idea how well it was that her partner for the mission had actually prepared beforehand, it never hurt to prepare again after you were given more details anyway. A secondary reason for the option was the woman being somewhat ‘nice’ to her long term friend, Juto had mentioned that he wished to inspect the Corporal’s gear before the pair set off in search of the poachers, by offering Marcus the choice that she had the princess showed that she hadn’t forgotten of her friends request completely. The third and final reason for her decision was based upon the fact that she herself wouldn’t mind a few moments to formulate a plan of action, sure, she could have done that on the fly like normal but it was something that weighed into the decision she’d made none the less. “Very well, we leave in fifteen minutes.” As she spoke Ecclair turned and began to walk towards the front door of the establishment, before she made it further than a few metres though Juto’s voice called out to her. “Ah! Almost forgot, Here you go Clair-bear.” Juto spoke as he fumbled about in his pocket approaching Ecclair who had paused and turned to face him, she was clearly not impressed by the repeated use of his nickname for her -they were in a professional setting and around other people for crying out loud-. Upon finding what he wanted from within his pocket Juto offered out his hand with the tiny black object resting in the palm of his hand. The small device was no larger than a few centimetres, “A new toy for you, why don‘t you give it a try. Fit it above your ear.” While Juto was the kind to play tricks on others Ecclair had little fear that he would ever do it to her, he was always making her strange new gadgets and the like and he hadn’t tried it yet. “Then what ?”, as she took the device and reached up beneath her hair placing it atop of her ear where it sat snug Ecclair wondered how it was the man had gotten it to fit her ear so perfectly. Creepy, it was kind of creepy. She wasn’t going to linger on that line of thought longer than a second though for it would only lead down a path of weird. “Now think about it, focus your thoughts on turning it on.” Focus her thoughts on turning it on? What? Just what? Somewhat quizzically Ecclair looked at the man before her with her eyebrow raised slightly, what in the world was he talking about? The expression on Juto’s face made it evident that he wasn’t mucking around, he meant what he had said. Focus her thoughts on turning it on? How exactly did she do that? Did she just think about it activ~ no sooner had the thought of it activating crossed through the knight’s mind did something rather impressive begin to happen. From the tiny and hidden device above her ear a small sound resonated throughout Ecclair’s mind, it was only barely noticeable but it was definitely there. Suddenly before she knew it Ecclair found herself looking through a pair of stylish sunglasses at the face of Juto who seemed rather impressed with himself, “Heh, hell yeah. Am I good or what? I knew they’d look good on you.” With a few words uttered between them Juto and Ecclair parted ways with the Sergeant heading out of the building and the Lieutenant making his way over to the table where Marcus sat eating his find. No sooner had he sat down did Juto find himself being asked a question he would have to moderate his reply to, Did he and Ecclair go way back? “You’d be hitting the nail on the head there. Known her since she saved my life a few years back.” |

Marcus chewed a mouthful of sandwich as he took in the Lieutenant's words. So he was right to assume that they were close. After all, saving each other's lives forged quite the bond. Marcus could relate, he recalled the Boscan War and those lives that had been lost, especially those that died trying to protect him. A lump formed in his throat as he remembered the knight that had died in the trenches after protecting Marcus...or Jayna the loyal archer who died at the hands of the Boscan General himself. It had been months since the war and Marcus had not yet gotten over the war; he still woke up in cold sweat, gasping from the nightmares that plagued him. With surprising difficulty, Marcus swallowed the food. "I see, so you two are close." Marcus muttered. "I'm interested because well... if anything, I see the Sergeant as my mentor. I guess you could say I wanted a better understanding of who she is really." He scratched the back of his head sheepishly. He wasn't used to talking to such higher authority in such a casual manner, much less speak at his own intentions. Marcus was a private and cautious person, preferring to keep to himself. Most of what went on in his head was never divulged, much less spoken to another person so openly. Even Laura isn't always aware of his thoughts. Then an idea struck him, he remembered one of the things he had been hoping to ask Juto. He might as well as him now, he didn't know when he'd see him again. "By the way," Marcus said again. "I noticed you gave her something before, some sort of gadget. If it isn't too much trouble, I was hoping you could take a look at some of my equipment?" Being the official smith or whatnot for The Dauntless Vanguard and Marcus being part of the unit now, maybe he could get Juto to hook him up. After all, the prospect of having such advanced weaponry at his disposal had Marcus almost drooling. |

Understand Ecclair better? Juto could have laughed out loud as Marcus spoke that he was seeking to try and understand more about Ecclair Farron Bellum, he wasn’t the first to have tried and he wouldn’t be the last. In truth the woman seemed like she’d be easy to read, she was simply a cold, callous bitch right? Yeah, not quite. There was more beneath that cold exterior than met the eye, not many knew much about the woman, her likes and dislikes and the many things that had lead to the woman becoming who she was. There had always been something there that sucked Juto in further and further, ever since he’d met her he too had been trying to understand more about the woman that was Ecclair Farron Bellum. Was it so strange that he found being lost within it all invigorating? “You wouldn’t be the first nor will you be the last.” There was a hint of light heartedness behind Juto’s words so far but that would change as he made direct eye contact with Marcus. Something changed behind the knight’s emerald green eyes and it would make it one hundred percent clear that things weren’t being joked about, “Ecclair is like any other, she is human despite what many might believe. She laughs, she cries, she bleeds and although she’s subconsciously gotten into the habit of putting distance between herself and others, she’s not invincible nor is she infallible.” The man across from Juto was part of the team now and so he was one of those that Ecclair would be relying on at times, it was subtle but he was hoping that his point got across. If Marcus wanted to get to know Ecclair better or was hoping to learn little things about her in order to try and do so then he would be left unhappy, those were things that someone had to earn on their own, not that Ecclair would have been so easily persuaded regardless. Things might have gotten slightly awkward due to the serious nature of the reply Juto had offered, while the Lieutenant wasn’t bothered and sat as comfortable as ever -albeit deep in thought-, it was understandable that the air thickened for Marcus. Breaking this the man chose to speak up and ask for Juto’s blacksmith know how and the like, it was quite smart even if Juto would have said so himself. “From what I’ve seen so far you’ve already got yourself some gadgets.” From the very moment Marcus had entered the building Juto’s eyes had been scanning both him and his equipment carefully, call it a habit. He’d noted the several pieces of gear that the man had on him and although they looked to be of decent construction he had immediately gotten ideas as to how to improve them, being a blacksmith and a bit of an inventor had it’s upsides that was for sure. “I’ll see what I can do when this is all over, I can’t claim all the credit though, I get inspiration from the Bellumese lately. But man to man, knight to knight and DV to DV you can trust that I’ll hook you up.” Ecclair stepped through the doors of the building once more just a moment or two after Juto paused in his speech, the man had heard her coming hence the way he’d wrapped up their conversation. Leaning in slightly as he stood up the man gave Marcus a wink of sorts, “It’s a shame so few ever get to take in the beauty that is Ecclair’s equipment, truly is a work of art if you ask me.” It was subtle, ever so subtle, but Juto had just given Marcus a way to begin a conversation with Ecclair that wouldn’t be shut down before it began. Perhaps he should seek to speak with her on things that she actually found interesting, if he was lucky she might even share some information on her home nation in the process. With farewells spoken between everyone Ecclair and Marcu were to leave the building and begin heading to their next destination, the device that the knight had been given was out of sight and so for the time being Marcus wouldn’t be privy to what it did exactly. |

Marcus raised his eyebrows as the Lieutenant spoke; his expression showing interest. Up to this moment, Juto had been quite laid back, but now he was serious. He listened intently to Juto's words, knowing that what was being said was quite important. He laced his fingers after he finished, deep in thought on his words. Marcus had never doubted that Ecclair hid something in the recesses of her mind. While she never showed it, Marcus gathered as much when he interacted with her in the Lancarri Jungle. The panther tooth that she had given him was now a necklace that he wore at all times, mainly because it was a fond reminder of his success as a knight. Ecclair was now his teammate, someone that he would rely on and would rely on him. He thought it prudent to understand the people he worked with, to know how they thought, that way he could work more efficiently with them. "I understand." Marcus finally said. As hard it was to believe, it was true. No matter how tough or strong a person might seem, in the end, they are human. They have emotions, they have weaknesses and they are vulnerable. And sometimes... it was best to not dig in too deep beyond these layers. Marcus saw the hint and took it, he would leave things as is and let time take its course. It was for the best. After asking his question about his gear, the Lieutenant seemed more than happy to help him out. It was interesting that Juto didn't have to physically inspect his equipment to understand how it worked. He really did live up to his reputation. Marcus was particular glad when he told that he'd help him out. As if juvenile as it sounded, the idea of him using such advanced equipment brought a smile to his face. With Ecclair coming into the room, Marcus sensed that it was time to go. He stood up and extended a hand to shake with Juto. "Thank you, Lieutenant." Marcus said. "Till we meet again." He turned to Ecclair. "Let's go, Sergeant." He left the building, hopefully with Ecclair. An idea struck Marcus as he walked, remembering what Juto had said about her weaponry. "Juto mentioned that he draws inspiration from Bellum..." Marcus mused. "So I'm assuming that transforming sword of yours is of Bellumese design. Is Bellumese technology really that advanced?" Juto drew inspiration from Bellum? Just what had those two being speaking about while she was gone. Ecclair pondered on what she’d been asked for a moment as the pair continued walking, it was likely that Marcus sought information or an opinion on his equipment from the blacksmith however for Juto to state that he drew inspiration from her nation made her question his motives. Well, whatever his reasons had been the man had sparked curiosity from Marcus and seeing as how she had nothing against the topic Ecclair decided to indulge in the idle chit chat, for now. “While that could be said about Bellum, I don’t believe gun blades to be unusual even for here in Fiore. Is yours not much the same in theory?” From what Ecclair had heard through the ‘grape vine’ Marcus himself had a weapon that changed from a primary melee form to a ranged one, was he hoping she didn’t know this or had he simply found hers to be different enough to spark his curiosity? “The Edge of Valkyria was not always as it is today, like a weapon should it has grown alongside that who wields it.” Without breaking her gaze into the distance as the pair walked Ecclair paused in her words before considering on something, was this Marcus’s way of saying he himself admired the weapon? Men did love shiny, sharp things after all. “You are new to the Dauntless Vanguard Corporal, however, you are not new to me. If you have something to say then I suggest you say it, I don’t make a habit out of idle chit chat without direction.” Ouch, that sounded cold. Marcus might have felt like he needed to thaw out as Ecclair finished speaking but if he knew her just that little bit better he’d have known that none of what she’d said was meant to be so. Perhaps it was simply due to her body language or perhaps it was her tone of voice, hell perhaps it was even just her manner of speech, what ever it was the woman had a habit of rubbing people the wrong way. Ah the life of the misunderstood, it could be frustrating sometimes but luckily if ever there was someone to not give a damn about how people saw her or how she came across it was Ecclair. |

Marcus raised an eyebrow at Ecclair's remark, she did make a good point after all. It was true that the design of gun weapons was hardly the sole domain of Bellum, the concept of gun weapons is a relatively recent idea that came to being during the leaping advancements in technology. It was a revolutionary idea; to combine the long range capacity of a gun with the melee capabilities of a hand weapon to produce one, versatile weapon. As great a result it was, the problem was that such a weapon was expensive to create and maintain as it manufacturers were limited. One would also have to consider that the wielder would have to be one who had talent with both types of weapons to use the gun weapon to it's full power. Many preferred the simplicity of using one normal weapon rather than 'complicate' matters. It was due to this that the wielders of gun weapons were far and in-between. Up until he met the Sergeant, Marcus was led to believe that he was the sole person to have a gun weapon in his hands. It had required quite some work on his behalf before he got Iustitia anyway, and even more work before it had become what it was today, though Marcus knew that it was nothing compared to what Ecclair possessed. His interest was piqued when she mentioned that her weapon was not always what it is now; that it had grown just as she had. Everyone started from somewhere... as ironic as it sounded, Marcus recalled that Ecclair used be in his same shoes, a regular knight trying to work their way through the ranks. "True, my weapon does follow the same concept." Marcus replied. "Yet mine is not as advanced as yours, my weapon is...crude." Marcus winced inwardly at Ecclair's words. Man, was that harsh. Even though Marcus had met the Sergeant in the Lancarri Jungle, he had forgotten how abrasive she was with her words sometimes. Still, Marcus wouldn't let a few trifle words cloud his better judgement, he knew that Ecclair was a good knight with a kind heart... somewhere. He knew that much and to be honest, that was all he cared about. "Very well then." Marcus said, he fixed Ecclair with a glance. "Your weapon has me curious. After all, with it being Juto's handiwork, I'd like to see it." Edited by Marcat, Aug 13 2013, 06:54 AM.

Ah, so it had been as she’d suspected. After Ecclair ‘encouraged’ Marcus to speak up with exactly what it was that he wanted from the conversation the man did exactly that, bringing to the table a request of the woman he was working with the Corporal seemed rather confident in his words. So many before Marcus had asked to see the weapon that Ecclair Farron Bellum carried into battle and so many before him had been refused, why would she go around letting just anyone hold something so precious to her? Sure she might on occasion hold it out for them to inspect but very few ever got to inspect it first hand. The fact that Juto had been entrusted with the weapon and trusted to even work upon it was a giant show of just how much trust the woman had in the blacksmith, not that Marcus would know that of course, it wasn’t like he knew how the woman was with the weapon -although he may have some inkling-. “Very well.” Even though Ecclair did hold trust in Marcus and hold him in enough regard as a team mate the knight also knew deep down that even if the man was clumsy or heck even tried to run away with the weapon… well there was no way he was going to be able to break it nor escape from her. It was these smalls facts that had Ecclair at complete ease as she summoned forth the Edge of Valkyria from it’s pocket dimension, linked to her armour the dimension was where she chose to store the weapon when she didn’t feel the need for it to be within her immediate grasp. From seemingly nowhere a weapon would begin to materialise held by her hand that hung at her side -closest to Marcus- and several white feathers much like the ones at her armours side would fall to the ground before disappearing as if they had never been there in the first place. With the weapon now completely summoned Ecclair would hold it out to Marcus as she paused in her steps. The timing on the whole thing had been rather good actually, now standing roughly ten or so metres from a small stall at the side of the street the pair were right where Ecclair had planned to be. “Wait here.“ After Marcus had taken the weapon from Ecclair’s grasp and had received the flicker of eye contact that made sure he knew he was being entrusted something rather important the Bellumese woman speak up before casually walking off towards the stall. The time the woman was gone would give Marcus time to inspect the weapon in his hands; it’s beauty, it’s elegance and it’s strength. Roughly five minutes would pass before Ecclair finished at the stall and returned to Marcus’s side, taking her weapon back from him the woman would send it back to it’s pocket dimension for the time being -I’m assuming he’d offer it back lol I don’t mean snatching it back-. Once again the pair would start moving towards their first major destination, it was only moments after her brief stop though that a strange rustling sound came from her hands. If Marcus looked across to his companion he would see the knight unwrapping a small candy from it’s cellophane like packaging before popping it into her mouth, she’d be fully aware the moment that Marcus’s attention shifted her way however until the candy was in her mouth Ecclair wouldn’t flicker her gaze in his direction. This was one of those times she was supposed to be nice and offer some to the other person….dang it…she really liked this candy, sometimes being sociable was a pain in the neck. Ecclair might have known that now was the time to act in a friendly and social manner however she simply wasn’t good at it, so rather than speaking and offering the man a piece of candy she would simply hold out her open hand with one resting upon it. |

Marcus waited as Ecclair seemed to think about his request. In all honesty, Marcus doubted that she would simply relinquish her weapon, especially to one as relatively inexperienced as himself. Still the prospect of seeing the weapon had him interested, he could see the weapon's capabilities firsthand, see the handiwork of Juto...perhaps he could even glimpse something of Ecclair's nature through the weapon. After all, what better way to understand a person than see their tools? With all that said, it was quite understandable when Marcus' face become one of quiet disbelief when Ecclair actually complied. He watched her summon the weapon and hold it out for him. With careful, gentle hands, Marcus grabbed the weapon with both hands, one had holding the blade, the other to grab the hilt. He nodded to Ecclair, making it clear that he would treat this weapon with the respect it deserved. Marcus ran his fingers over the weapon, sensing the contours and curves of the blade. The craftsmanship was simply outstanding; the metal and steel that made up the blade seemed to be connected seamlessly, like the weapon was sculpted rather than crafted. The weapon itself was incredibly advanced by design, while Marcus was hardly an expert, he was used to his own weapon, enough to see when it was sorely outclassed. Still, as he held the weapon, he felt excited, more than before. Holding the weapon invigorated him, it gave him a prospect of what he could work towards. He envisioned how much good he could do with such an item at his disposal. He shifted his grip so he held the weapon in his hand, ready to swing it. He tested the balance to see how it felt. Though the weapon was well balanced and light, it didn't feel right in his hand... like it felt off. Marcus was no stranger to swords, having learned to use them at a proficient level back in the academy, however, it was still a weapon he wasn't accustomed to. The knight knew that no matter how good this weapon was, he could never use it to it's full potential. A sword was great and all, but he would never be as good with it as he would be with a polearm, he preferred Iustita. Ecclair returned soon after, and with that, Marcus returned the weapon. "Thank you Sergeant, I learned a lot." With that, Marcus stuffed his hands in his pockets and walked along. He kept his silence as he walked, mainly because he had no interest to continue speaking and also because he didn't want Ecclair to get angry with him. That being said, he couldn't help but look over as he heard a rustling sound. He saw Ecclair unwrapping a candy and popping it in her mouth. Marcus shrugged to himself and went back to checking out his surroundings. As Ecclair silently offered the candy, Marcus reached over and took it. "Thanks," He muttered, unwrapping the candy, he popped the candy in his mouth. A thought occurred to Marcus as they walked. "Where do we start to find this Fashionata and Madhatter folks?" "I have a feeling it'd be best to search for intelligence before he wander in." Edited by Marcat, Aug 24 2013, 05:15 AM.

As the candy that Marcus popped into his mouth started to melt away the sweet flavours would reach his taste buds and as that happened the nature of the candy itself may have struck a surprise with the young man. Not many would ever guess the size of the sweet tooth/dessert tooth that Ecclair Farron Bellum possessed, truth of the matter was it was so large and she indulged it so often that she really she really should have been the size of an elephant. Luckily for the woman her genetics not only made it incredibly hard for her to gain weight but her lifestyle and her preferences meant that the odds of her getting any heavier than she was now were low… very low. The particular candy that Ecclair had purchased from the vendor moments back were ones that many might find to be almost ‘too much’, strawberry and cream was amongst the variety of those that she’d selected and it was this flavour that she’d randomly picked from the bunch to offer Marcus. While strawberry and cream was far from an unusual flavour for candy the male knight would soon realise that these ones were slightly different, different how? Well let’s just say they packed a punch if you weren’t used to sweet and/or rich foods/flavours. Far richer than most others out there the candy was keeping Ecclair’s cravings sated however what Marcus would think it was entirely another story, perhaps though even if it wasn’t his thing it was best he not waste it. Now back to the times at hand….. As they walked Marcus mentioned his thoughts and concerns regarding the pairs current course of action, did he really think that she would be leading them in without intelligence? Ignoring the line of thought for she felt she was drawing too much into the Corporals words -and partly because she was in a slightly better mood thanks to the candy-, “Our first target is not too far from here, intel says he entered the building roughly five minutes before we left the bar.” By not to far from here Ecclair meant within a minute or two of walking, honestly though she thought that where they were going first would have been one of the questions he’d have asked of Juto in their time together at the bar. If it hadn’t been then what on earth had the two been speaking about? Surely not weapons the entire time. As the pair rounded the corner ahead a building that pretty much stunk of criminal activity made itself visible at the end of the street, trying to sneak in during the day was always risky given the attire that the pair were wearing and the lack of places to hide in and so Ecclair had pretty much opted for the more direct approach. “Intel suggests there is a tunnel under the building, it leads for some distance however it doesn’t actually go anywhere. Think of it as a rat tunnel that was never finished, only reason it normally gets them out of trouble is that no one has found it… YET.” The plan was simple really, with only a few steps it shouldn’t have been hard for Marcus to pick up from what he’d been told already alone. First the pair would get inside the building and take out who ever got in their way making sure that none could escape -being careful that none got too seriously injured of course-. Secondly the pair would have to seek out the tunnel that would no doubt house the man they sought, a game of hide and seek had pretty much begun. OOC note
