It said "Royal Puppet Theatre" on the door. Hoshino had no idea what that was supposed to mean. As she entered, everything was dark around her. Voices were singing, dead voices. Voices that she couldn't feel in the air. All around her, there were voices. "Tetsu to Hagane ja magaru, magaru, magaru…" The echoes where everywhere. What did they want to break? The voices surrounded her. they came from everywhere and the echos resonated in the bleak, hollow room. There was nothing in here.

Originally, Hoshino had never intended to come to Tully Village. Even though it was not big, Hoshino knew that it lay just between the largest cities of Fiore and therefore right in the middle of a highly frequented travel route. But when she had been traveling nearby, she found a dying dove in the woods. Obviously it was a letter pigeon but this one was not going to deliver any letters any more. Usually she would never have cared about it. It was not her business. But as she tried to help the dove just a little. Easing its pain, cooling it in the burning heat of the sun. But it was hopeless. The injured bird kept struggling, trying to finish it's job, delivering its letter.
Only when Hoshino promised to deliver the letter bound to her feet instead, the bird calmed down and Hoshino stayed with her, until she entered eternal life. She even held a small funeral. And now she had to keep her promise and deliver the letter.
It was addressed to the "Royal Puppet Theatre" in Tully Village. So she made her way to the small, busy village, to find the theater. Her original plan was to go there and deliver the letter as fast as possible so that she could leave this village full of people, quickly. She still couldn't stand being around people so this place made her nervous. But then her plans of leaving where destroyed when she entered the theatre to deliver the letter.

There was no light in the room and it was completely bleak. Only the sound of those singing voices. Even though it was somehow a lovely tune, the voices sounded dead, hollow and threatening. They sang of breaking and destruction. Breaking, stealing… and the echo made it spooky.
"Kin to Gin ja nusumareru, nusumareru, nusumareru…" They kept singing. The voices overlapped and the sound grew louder. "Kin to Gin ja nusumareru, nusumareru, nusumareru…" Somehow in the dark she she managed to find a candle and some sticks. Since the air in this room didn't move at all, she was blind in the darkness. "Tetsu to Hagane ja magaru, magaru, magaru…" By now it was so loud that Hoshino could feel the echos reflecting from the walls. It distracted her. It made her even more blind, because now, she could feel something but it was only irritating and misleading.
When she finally managed to light up the candle, she could at least see something. It was still pitch dark and it was still empty. It was a round room. The walls were made of cols stone. There was nothing in it. At the one end, there was the entrance, just at the other side of it was a table set up with sewing stuff, a whole pile of different fabrics and other stuff that were usually needed to make dolls.
It was a high room and Hoshino could hardly see the ceiling.
"Is there anybody in here?" She asked out loudly. For a short time, she even considered just putting the letter on the desk and leave it there for the people, working in here to find. But she couldn't just do this. That wouldn't be delivering the letter. That wouldn't be keeping her promise. "I have a letter for you! Is anyone home?"

There was nothing but her own echo, mixed with the hollow song. This room seemed to be totally empty. Now the flame on her candle grew a little and she could see a little more. Now she saw what was singing. The ceiling that was formed like a dome was covered with dolls, singing their song without moving their lips.

"Damn, I hate small towns. "

Valentine the flavorful clever vixen from near Clover Town had finally made it to Trillium the home of Raven Tail a powerful guild that she wanted to join but....a powerful knight and an idiot boy complicated that issue. "No matter how much time passes Knight I will have you as my dolls." Valentine broke into a fit of evil laughter as she entered the Tully Village via Magical taxi. Stepping out of the taxi she noticed how Tully Village never changed even in 5 years it still looked the same. "How Quaint." Valentine begin to slowly walking around Tully Village enjoying the atmosphere that felt very similar to where she grew up. Now seeing how much time has passed she wondered if anyone recognized her in her expensive clothes and her new seductive and proper sounding voice.

So she entered an ice cream shoppe that sold pretty good ice cream so good that for the time she was here she came nearly everyday and became good friends with the owner. Entering the shop she waved at the owner of the store and flashed him a bright and a sincere smile, the owner looked up at her and didn't even remember her. "What are you having my lady we have over 32 flavors of ice cream and something for everyone here." As the old reached out and shook her hand and flashed her a smile as still did not recognize her. I know, thought Valentine I will order what I ordered nearly everyday when I came here. Valentine now confident that he would remember her, smiled and spoke back. "I would like a triple scoop cone with a chocolate scoop on the bottom and a orange serbert scoop on top of the chocolate put sprinkles on the orange serbert scoop of ice cream, and then I want a strawberry scoop of ice cream with bits of strawberry in the ice cream. " The shop owner with a puzzled look on his face prepared the cone and handed it to Valentine. "I see city people have some mmm...very....unique tastes, that will be 50 jewels." Valentine face flashed a slight look of disappointed as the man did not remember her and put the jewels in his hand and grabbed the cone and walked out of the whole slightly depressed. Before literally bumping into the woman that she came to Tully Village see in the first place Minvera P. Cain her old teacher that taught her how to use a puppet and be a puppeteer.

"Awwww Valentine my my have you grown with a strong young woman. So I see you finally accepted my offer to help with the Royal Puppet Theater this year. We'll we will need a powerful puppeteer like yourself that has the skill and grace to control puppets since last year was a bust. So how about we take my car and go down to the Theater are practice a bit and see how much you have grown. " So Valentine and Minvera head out to the theater and Valentine is surprised by just how spooky it looks. "Well old woman let's have some fun. " As they both started controlling the various puppets from a far and making them come to life but they heard a person out of nowhere that said they had a letter. "It must be for me, I sent a dove of mine to sent an important message to one of the sponsors of the theater," said Minvera to Valentine before speaking a little louder to address the lost person "Stay where you are I am coming down in a moment."

When Hoshino heard footsteps, she went back to the door to see who was heading towards her. When she stepped out into the rather busy street of the village, she saw an older woman walking straight towards the theater, followed by a younger one that was about her age as far a she could tell. Maybe they were people working at the theatre. So she decided to wait for them to reach the building and give them the letter. As she turned back to sit down inside, since it was far to hot to be waiting outside, she was stunned.

Suddenly the spooky atmosphere was gone. Instead the room had become bigger and no longer round. It was brightly lit because of big windows that hadn't been there before. It was full of people, working on their stuff. Sewing or repairing puppets, studying text phrases, practicing to movements of their puppets. Some were magicians and trained the movements of their puppets, controlled by their magic. The puppets were dancing without strings, talking with different voices, always repeating themselves as the actors practiced parts over and over again. It was amazing how they were able to project their voices onto the puppets bound to their hands. It was as if they were the puppets were really talking. The room was filled with voices of busy people and there was no sign of those, spooky, hollow voices of singing the singing dolls.
Even though it was filled with people and Hoshino usually didn't like man-made places, she was somehow fascinated by this. So this was a puppet theatre. She hadn't been sure what it was when she first saw the address on the letter. She had just assumed that she would find the place and she did it by asking around. Now she really saw what a puppet theatre was and she was amazed.

It was a whole different world, tied to the hands of those actors. Even though it was hold together by strings, or maybe because of this, it was an amazing world that somehow made her sad. It made her think and somehow, she looked at her wrists twice, just to be sure that there were no strings tied to them. She shook her head. This thought was ridiculous. But she knew that some people believed that they were tied to strings, just like those puppets, not controlled by actors but by the strings of a higher power or of fate or both. She had never believed those theories.
All the members of her temple considered themselves as observers and observers never interfered. So they were not part of the great theatre outside their mountains. That was how they called the outer world sometimes. They saw many different strings tying those people together. Some were influenced without knowing it, some were holding bundles of strings and made their puppets dance as they wished. The temple was regarded as a string-free zone.
Maybe it was because of that, why this theatre fascinated her. Why she liked seeing it. How they practiced, so that their little world would run perfectly. She smiled. It could be that the heavens, so many people believed in were just another room like this.

Finally the older woman had arrived. So she just had to give her the letter and could be an her way out into some forest again. She liked that much more. With another look into the preparation room of the theatre, she prepared to leave.
Pity, she thought, I might have liked to stay here a bit longer. observing them, maybe seeing what they were preparing for. Somehow she didn't want to leave. It reminded her of her home, even though it was totally different.

"Are you the "Royal Puppet Theatre" of Tully Village?" She asked the woman who had just arrived. "I have a letter for you."

"Why yes of course I am darling so you have my letter, thanks this is going to be a good day." Minerva finished walking down the stairs and walked across the room in front of the girl and took the letter from the girl and read the letter. As Minerva was reading the letter she slowly started to pace around the room with a look of distraught on her face but slowly walking back to the girls. "Well Valentine it looks like we will be heavily understaffed this year maybe a little too understaffed. Lord Tiron has stated in this message that he can not give us the funds we need to hire more staff especially the laborers. " Valentine hearing the worst thing that could happen to a play in progress happen deeply unsettled her as she thought of a solution.

"Well I have a plan, Minerva." As Valentine looked over at the young woman that delivered the letter then back at Minerva, winked and then faced the girl again. "Sorry for you to see the wonderful Royal Puppet Theater in such disarray, but since we have not introduced ourselves to each other I shall start. Hello I am Valentine nice to meet you." Minerva quickly introduced herself as well. " I am Minerva P. Cain, the official owner of what you see before you." Minerva pointed to several things in the theater before speaking again. " I know you must be tired from such a long and tiresome journey so how about you stay a few days at the theater it is a couple of lofts in the attic and you could just help out a bit while you are here. So how does that sound to you?" Minerva flashed her a sincere smile that spoke that she would not take no for an answer.

So her name was Minerva? Hoshino was confused. She somehow thought that the woman was called "Royal Puppet Theatre" and the shield on the door was just showing that she lived here in the theatre. But now that she thought of it, this really had been a stupid thought. Valentine on the other hand was a quite tall, beautiful young woman. Her blonde hair and the black dress made Hoshino think of a doll. There was something off with her lips though. She just couldn't think of a reason, why anybody would put paint on her lips. But she had seen that on women before. She knew better then to ask directly. Traveling had taught her some stuff after all. "I am Hoshino." They she remembered what Valentine said. "Nice to meet you?" She said, well rather asked. She was not sure if this was a phrase but it somehow fit. She wondered why Minerva was staring at her the way she did.
"Thank you. I am not tiered." She simply stated. But Minerva wouldn't stop staring at her. This was getting a little uncomfortable. She didn't get what that stare meant. Did she say something wrong? Or was there something she still had to do? She did hand over the letter. It had not been damaged or anything. So what could she possibly be missing? She tried to remember exactly what they said but it didn't make sense to her. Wasn't she allowed to turn down an offer to stay? Even though this theatre fascinated her, she didn't want to stay. It was so full of people and loud…But when she looked at Minerva, she still had that look in her eyes. Demanding. Threatening? Anyhow Hoshino figured that she might as well have some water. "But… some water wouldn't hurt I guess…" She added. From Minerva's face, she could see that she was getting close but this was still not what she wanted to hear.
"Do you need some help? I have a lot of free time…" This time the older woman looked satisfied. So they wanted her to help out? Of course she was going to but they could just have asked...

Even though she was very confused Hoshino wanted to be part of this theatre. It seemed to suck her in. It was overwhelming. She had already forgotten about the scenery that had been in this before. The only thing that mattered now, was the joyful voices, practicing, shouting, blabbering. She never thought that she could enjoy such a crowded place.

"So what do you want me to do?" She asked. Since she was going to help, she felt eager to start. She hesitated in her thoughts. That was nothing like her usual behaviour. She had never been courageous about doing something that involved many people. She just shook her head. Maybe she was a little tiered after all. Such thinking.
Hoshino imagined what she could do. Bringing a puppet "alive". But most likely she was just going to carry things around, helping with sceneries perhaps. She had no experience with such things, so she wouldn't be of great help in any other area. And the only helpful skill, was that she was a good drawer. But they sure had much better ones in here. So no helping to bring puppets "alive" after all. This was going to be a very interesting time. At least she hoped so.

They told here that she should just wait and in the next day, she could start. Since there was no other place and Hoshino refused to take an inn, she was to spend the night at the theatre. They had insisted to put a bed-like construction together so she could sleep in there, but Hoshino never liked beds like the people had here in Fiore. She preferred to stay outside, but she couldn't. So when she was finally alone, Hoshino took her blanket and lay down in one corner, on the bare, wooden floor. Now she felt much better and soon fell asleep.

Rhawin held the book tightly. Losing it would be the worst. It all had worked so well. And then out of a sudden there were the guards of the watch! They were following him for a while now and it didn't seem likely, that they would stop him. He zig-zagged through the alleyways of Tully Village and looked for a way up to the roofs.
There it was! A drainpipe low enough to reach and it lead up to the roof of a small building!
He sped up and climbed it as fast as possible. The clanging sound of armor and swords came closer.
He grabbed hold onto the edge of the roof and slipped into the shadows. The guards had entered the alleyway.
"Where are you! We know you are here! Get down here and return, what you have taken! Filthy thief!" He would have answered, but that would blow his cover. no one called him flithy! And besides that, the bolt on the crossbow of one of the guards looked like it could tare through his flesh easily. He kept silent and moved along the edge of the roof until he reached a spot, where he could climb onto a higher one. They would go on searching for him. he had to hide somewhere.
The air was mild and the moon was bright. These roofs where perfect for people like him. they formed a perfect "Thieve's Highway", extending from one end of the village to the other. He looked out for a possible hide-out, when he spotted a building with a high dome-shaped roof and high windows. Getting in there should be easy.
He touched his pocket in which he kept the book again. This Job went well. He still couldn't believe that it hadn't been guarded. it was one of only ten existing prints. Sure, it was nothing but a novel, nothing special, like a spellbook or something of that sort, but still iut was worth a lot.
While thinking of this, he made his way over to the dome. All the windows were closed. and there were no locks to be seen on them. "Guess, I'll have to take the door then."
He climbed down into the street and looked at the door. It was a normal lock, nothing extraordinary. "Well, here we go." He took out his lockpicks and began. The lock proved even simpler than he estimated. When it sprung open, he entered and, as silently as possible, closed the door behind him.
Everything around him was silent and the moonlight shone through the big windows. But the room seemed dark nevertheless. He looked around and managed to find some candlesticks and matches, but something stung him twice, while he seaarched.
As he lit the candle, he saw, what it had been. The table he pikced the candles from was filled with sewing-equipment. Needles, cloth in all colors and much more.
Since he would have to wait here 'till the next day, he looked for a room, in which he could stay.
He found a staircase and followed it to an upper floor. The room he found was dusty and small, but better than nothing. The only thing that grabbed his attention was a consturction, which looked like a makeshift bed and something lying in the corner.
He approached it and nearly dropped the candle. "It seems, that after all those events in the tower, i have bound myself to another women."
He left the room and found another one, empty this time. He sat on the floor, blew out the candle and tried to sleep. And he hoped, she wouldn't find him.

Hoshino woke up when she heard voices singing. She thought that they sounded familiar. As if she had heard them singing before. Their hollow voices resonating in her head and her heart. Still a little sleepy, she opened her eyes. For a moment she was disorientated. But then she remembered that she had somehow, more or less been forced to stay at the Royal Puppet Theatre. But when she looked around, she found herself in a round room that seemed somehow familiar. She was sure that she had seen it somewhere before but in her sleepy state, she couldn't say immediately where she had seen it before.

"Tetsu to Hagane ja magaru, magaru, magaru…" she recognized that song. That hollow, desperate song. And now it all came back to her. The puppet theatre. The single, round, dark room that she entered at first. After it had changed with the arrival of Valentine and Minerva, it must have slipped her mind. But now it all came back and when she looked towards the roof, in the dim moonlight, she could see hundreds, thousands of dolls, covering it. Singing their lonely song. "Tetsu to Hagane ja magaru, magaru, magaru…" She still didn't get what they wanted to break. Iron and steel. But that didn't make any sense. But the voices were giving her goosebumps. She never liked it when she couldn't feel something that she knew should be there. Or if she felt some air currents that shouldn't be there, like she did, now.

She just wanted to return to her, now round, corner and go back to sleep when she realized that she wasn't alone in the room. So that was where the random current had been coming from. At least one mystery was solved. At the other end of the room, there was a man. A man she had seen so many times before. It seemed that their time together wasn't up yet, so their paths kept on crossing. The crystal mage, Rhawin. The mage she had met so often that she somehow considered him to be one of her rare friends, lay there in the dark. Hoshino was a little curious about what he was doing here or why he came in here in the middle of the night, but she didn't want to disturb his sleep. If the singing dolls had not managed to wake him, yet, that was.
"Kin to Gin ja nusumareru, nusumareru, nusumareru…" This was not getting better. But Hoshino knew that she needed to get some more sleep. So she decided to join Rhawin. With all the singing, she knew that she would be somehow scared and would feel much better with someone she knew. So she lay down next to the crystal mage and closed her eyes.

"Kin to Gin ja nusumareru, nusumareru, nusumareru…" Silence. "Kin to Gin ja nusumareru, nusumareru, nusumareru…" Hoshino opened her eyes again. "Tetsu to Hagane ja magaru, magaru, magaru…" Silence. "Tetsu to Hagane ja magaru, magaru, magaru…" She closed them again. This was not getting better. She wanted to know why those puppets wanted to break iron and steel or steal gold and silver. She closed her eyes.

"Tetsu to Hagane ja magaru, magaru, magaru…" Silence. "Kin to Gin ja nusumareru, nusumareru, nusumareru…" The song wouldn't stop. "Rhawin?" She whispered. She would feel a lot more comfortable if she had someone confirming that she was not hallucinating. And if she was not, someone, who could maybe calm her a little.
She looked at the dolls. They were all made so detailed and anyone could tell that they were the work of a master. Someone who was really good and put a lot of work and heart into them. But their song was mourning. As if they had all died.
"Rhawin? Are you awake?" She whispered again.

He had been awake, since this horrific song had started. The first thing he had noticed, that he was no longer in the small, dusty room, he had been in before, but lay on the arcade, that surrounded the main hall of this place. The next thing he ckecked, was if the book was still there. Even a thief was not safe from thievery. And while he did all this, this horrifying, soulless chant echoed from the walls, echoed inside his head. He tried to ignore it, but it came back everytime, and everytime it seemed louder than before.

"Tetsu to Hagane ja magaru, magaru, magaru…"

"Yes, I am awake. There is no way anyone can sleep during this." He answered Hoshinos question. "Where is it coming fr.." he interrupted himself, when he saw it. his eyes had adapted to the darkness and so he could see the dome ceiling of the room.
It was a view as horrifying as the song. Dolls filled the entire dome, naild to the walls, hung from ropes. They were the origin, there was no doubt. Sang without movement, sang without soul.

"Kin to Gin ja nusumareru, nusumareru, nusumareru…"

Even with his eyes adapted to the darkness, he could not see the windows, nor the door. now that he thought about it, he couldn't even remeber, where it was.

"What is this? Do you know anything?"

And every second, the soulless chant o the dolls grew louder and drilled itself inside his head. He saw, that Hoshino seemed even more frightened that himself and so, her dragged her closer.

Hoshino just shook her head. She wished she knew what this all meant. "No idea. It was there when I entered this place the first time." If it was up to her, she would just wait and see what was going to happen. Why were they singing like that? It sounded so sad. As if they just couldn't stop to sing of their sorrow but their song was cruel and aggressive. She had no idea what to do. Of course they could just try to sleep again but with this song continuously disturbing her it was not possible. It troubled her. She wanted to help those singing dolls. But what could a human do for a doll? How could a young woman like her help a dome full of dolls? And how could she even tell that they needed help? And why did they want to steal and break? This was something she didn't want to think about.
"I don't think that I will be able to sleep again. Not with the... ummm ... music.. " She told Rhawin.
Truth was that she was a little afraid of sleeping in one room with all those sad, angry dolls. The crystal mages presence calmed her a little. Having someone whom she knew rather well around in this situation was oddly comforting. Hoshino wondered when she started to actually enjoy someone's company who was not from her temple or an animal. This somehow confused her. At least confusing feelings kept her from thinking further about the dolls or her fear.
Maybe she could ask Minerva or Valentine the next day. Unbelievingly she shook her head. Why had she gotten the feeling that she wouldn't meet them again? Neither Minerva, nor Valentine? She was supposed to help them with the theatre and for the first time she had felt something like excitement about working with other people. Maybe excitement was exaggerated. It was more like she didn't want to run away from those people. But in Hoshino's case, this was very near to being overly excited. Still, she couldn't help but feel like she would never see them again. But surely there would be someone they could ask in the morning about the dolls. This theatre was not going to be deserted over night, was it? This thought feared her. She shook her head. Gloomy thoughts like that would just scare her.
"If we're not going to sleep, maybe you can tell me what you've been doing?" She asked. She liked to listen to Rhawin's voice. A familiar voice, despite the whispering singing would be comfortable. Another thing that was new to her. Maybe the dolls just wanted to be free to move around the way they wanted. Maybe they had souls, just like her or any other living creature.

So Hoshino decided that talking was comforting her. Why? She had never liked that. She had not talked for a long time, until she met Rhawin in Oak Town and now she felt it was comfortable? Had she changed that much? Not that she really cared. It was still confusing though.
"Why have you come here? Did you want to see a show? I think they only perform during daytime..." But there was no other reason for him to come here, was there?

That question was more than typical for her. Sureley, she didn't mean it in a bad way, but sometimes, he thought that she wanted to be dragged into danger, despite her philosophy of staying out of action. In all the times, he had met her again and again, she had never grown less interesting. If anything she had gotten more interesting every single time.
But how to answer her question now? Lying would be of no use and was thus an impossible option. but so was the truth, if he wanted to keep her sdafe and out of danger. But unlike a lie, the truth could at least be bent into a more suitable form.
Now, where was that candlestick he brought up to the first floor? Could it have wandered withim to this place perhaps? Despite the unlikeliness of this event, he searched around and was somehow not surprised when he found it next to himself, just where he left it, before this had started. He lit it and positioned it between them, so it would at least light the area around them. but as bright as the candles were, the curcle of light surrounding them was small.
"I came here, because of this." he said, bringing out the book from his pocket and showing it to her, whilst studying it closer himself. The cover was bland of any decoration. all it showed was the title in golden imprint on the dark brown leather. "Tales of Wind and Earth and Time"
"Although it might not look that special, believe me, it is. And it was.. not easy to get."
Suddenly, he had an idea. An idea that would maybe ease the situation for both of them, since talking seemed to make it easier to listen to the horrifying, stale song of the dolls. It would decrease the value of the book slightly, but right now, he would anything to make that horrible music stop, to silence the hall.
"I... I could read it to you, if you want." Although he wanted to keep the book safe and high in value, he hoped, she would. Otherwise, lasting out here would be a tremendous effort for both their minds.
