"How do I look?"
|
It was only one of the first days that Zak had spent in Magnolia, but he could already tell bad things were to come for one major reason - money. His father gave him a set amount to last on the trip from his home to Magnolia in an attempt to join Fairy Tail, but as time goes by, money goes by even quicker. Seeing as low rate accommodation for shelter were pretty overcharged as it was, or at least that was his opinion, he knew that within the next few days, he'd nearly be broke. At the moment, he had nowhere to rest his head for the night, but with hopes of becoming a member of the highly praised guild, he figured that he'd be able to earn some spare money doing missions. However, today was a special day, it seemed, as the crowds began to swarm towards Magnolia Park. There were rumors, or information that Zak hadn’t known about, floating amongst the crowd that passed him as he was pushed around by the crowd. Throughout the few words that he was able to make out from the loud conversations that people were making with one another, though with them conflicting, it sounded like a bunch of rubbish, he was able to determine that they were speaking about some ‘tournament at noon’ and that the word ‘Jewels’ came up quite a bit. Now, while Zak wasn’t a boy that was greedy or liked to spend his money nonchalantly, he knew the kind of situation he was in and how checking out more details about the event could possibly help him out in this scenario. With this goal in mind, he swam along with the group of people that continued down the crowded streets, before winding up in sight of a temporary stadium that must have been set up for whatever event this was. To the right was a table with occupants handing out flyers or forms, but to the left was another set up where people were turning them in. Making his way up, he accepted a flyer, then looked at it and started skimming through to see what the event entailed, “Let’s see… Waldo’s Whacky Tournament?” It certainly was an odd name for a tournament, but it was of no grave importance, “Participants will placed in a single elimination tournament bracket… Players will sometimes be placed in teams or play on their own according to randomly generated events… The events are chosen at random, meaning that it is possible for anyone to win.” His eyes opened wide, excited by the thought that he might have a chance, “Whoever comes out on top will be declared the ’Whacky Winner’ and will receive 1,000,000 Jewels as a reward for their effort...” (O_O) Edited by Pumpkin, Mar 11 2013, 05:39 PM.

It was a pleasant enough day in Magnolia, sunlight beaming down, only a few white fluffy clouds in the sky, a gentle breeze blowing through Kain's wild, sable hair as he made his way down the street, his blond furred wolf ears twitching slightly in response, a canine tail with fur coloured to match his hair save for the white tip wagging unconsciously behind the boy. The hanyou had planned to go to the library and study of all things, as much as books were an anthemia to him, trying to find out more about his full bloodied demon side. His companion inugami Yenene though had offered to go in his place, and by offered the spirit had gone because he hadn't wanted to listen to Kain whine all day about how boring it all was and how difficult reading was. That left the wolf-boy the day to himself, his current hastily formed plan being to go to the guild Fairy Tail and attempt to complete a mission to get some Jewels; not that he was particularly the type to care about wealth or material possessions. While the half-demon no longer needed to worry about trying to find a roof over his head every night, the reason for that made him feel guilty every time it crossed his mind. Kain was currently living with a fellow Fairy Tail mage, Noel, and while Noel seemed more than happy enough to have the older boy around, the inugami mage still felt wrong living off the charity of a friend, particularly after a life of scrapping by on his own, so at every opportunity he tried to find ways to get a way to pay him back. Missions seemed ideal enough given his somewhat unique skill set. However something was up with the city, Kain hadn't lived in Magnolia for too long, but he knew when something was different; the streets were less alive than normal, more people were travelling to the...what was on that side of town, the park perhaps, and his ears picked up something about a tournament with jewel prizes. It wouldn't hurt to check out what was going on the wolf-boy reasoned, if it panned out, maybe he'd have a way to help pay back Noel, and if not, he didn't lose all that much time and could just go the guild hall anyway. As Kain approached the park, the streets started to get busier again, even more so than usual, and in the distance he could make out a large stadium that definitely was a new feature for the town. He soon enough found a table with someone handing out flyers, taking one and reading it, kind of wishing they had someone to announce what was going on instead. While it took him a little longer than most, he made out of the important details soon enough, tournament with various events, and the winner got a massive 1,000,000 Jewel reward. For all of the hanyou's good intentions, he had a pretty large competitive streak, partly because of his demon blood, and partly because that was just Kain. Still, had there been no Jewels, with how vague with what the events would be, plus the kind of ridiculous name, he probably would have turned it down for the chance to do a mission for the sake of Noel. Add a Jewel reward though, larger than anything he would get from a mission? Well his tail started to wag faster much like an excited dog, a grin crossing his face that showed off his pointed canines. "Heh, let's do this, bring it on Waldo!" he thought, going back to reading and then looking around to see how to sign up. Edited by Cloud, Mar 11 2013, 07:20 AM.

It didn’t take more than a few seconds for the youngster to make up his mind as he had been running extremely low on cash, but with the aforementioned thought of having a chance to win due to it not being a brawl (or at least he had hoped), he figured it was one hundred percent worth the effort. He flipped through the brochure, trying to find if there was a list of the possible events for the thread that would be randomized, but the attempt was to no avail. It appeared as if they were going to keep all of the possible events a secret, maybe pulling them out of a hat before they began each round of the competition, but Zak had absolutely no clue what he would be up against at this point of time. He withdrew his pen from his pocket as he opened the flyer and began filling out the details that were necessary to enter the competition; the competitor’s name, the age, and ultimately, a signature that made sure that the competitor’s knew and understood all the terms and conditions that came along with entering. Unfortunately, very few people would be able to notice the fine print and even less would consider reading the wall of miniature text, though without much hesitation at all, Zak filled in the above two blanks then signed his name. Reading back over to make sure that he didn’t miss anything important or forget to do anything necessary, he made his way over to the table that sat to the left and turned in his application. It appeared as if the majority of the individuals that stood around weren’t very interested in signing up, which was a relief to Zak due to the fact that he’d have a more likely percentage of winning, but instead, they kept their eyes on the stage as they waited to see what such an odd event was being held for. The only thing on the stage that was undergoing changes was a large board that a woman stood next to, where she was updating the brackets with a list of the competitor’s names as the applications filed in. So far, there weren’t nearly as many people as Zak had expected, as he only saw 9 slots out of the maximum 16 were actually filled in. By the looks of it, if the first round wasn’t a randomly selected team event, he would have to go up against someone named Clyde. He glanced over his shoulder, but turned back after realizing that there was no use trying to find someone by only their name in a crowd like this. Tournament Line Up

Kain quickly came to the conclusion that the brochure was useless (which had nothing to do with it being It looked like there was a table where he could sign up, but more interesting was the large screen on the main stage which distracted Kain and caught his attention, looking like a fairly typical bracket set up, with so far nine, no, ten people signed up for the whacky tournament. As he read over the names 10 became eleven, and then soon twelve. With how many people there were the park, even the wolf-boy could work out not many must be signing up, but with four, no, three places left now, he should get his tail moving if he wanted to compete. Weaving his way through the crowd, managing to avoid bumping into anyone despite moving swiftly, mostly thanks to his heightened senses, he quickly managed to find a sign up table, borrow a pen from a woman, paused as he filled in his details, considering using a fake name out of habit, before shrugging and filling in his details correctly. He did briefly consider reading the fine print, but between that being torture and now, thirteen, fourteen names on the board, he signed the form and handed it over. Moments number fifteen showed up, not his, someone else that must have got in just before him. However before he'd even get a chance to worry about it, position 16 was filled in with the name Kain, his ears sitting up and his tail wagging as he moved to get a better look of the stage, alongside everyone else in that park apparently, wondering what would happen now that the sign ups where apparently complete. Looking over the remaining names, position 10 was Teito, 11 was Rin, 12 was Mikage, 13 was "Tiger" (what the hell, that wasn't a real name, it's not like Kain signed up as "Wolf"), 14 was Shima, and 15, Kain's first opponent, was Abe. |

Zak kept his eye on the board, seeing as he had nobody else to talk to nor did he see any familiar faces, but his heart jumped a little as each of the name’s on the board were filling up. Over the course of the next five minutes or so, the board was complete with sixteen names of all the participants, including his own. He wasn’t sure as to why two of the people had decided to enter with the nicknames “King” and “Tiger,” but there was no reason as to why they should not be able to so Zak went on without worrying too much about it. However, there appeared to be quite a lot of activity going on behind the stage, where it was enclosed by solid, temporary walls that the staff had set up so that everything would run smoothly without much outside interference. People were going in and out, all sporting an official badge to show that they were indeed a true staff member, but that didn’t concern anyone, as that would be expected from such an event. On the contrary, the individual that was attracting everyone’s attention was the man that stood on stage, clad in red and white stripes that nearly screamed out for attention. However, the man was currently in the middle of a conversation with the woman that stood to his left, who at least knew what fashion was, so people would continue on with their ways in the meantime. They figured that they were still setting up for the tournament’s preliminary round to begin, which they were, but Zak waited patiently until things had settled down and the oddly dressed man appeared to be ready to start the event. He tapped on the mic three times, checking to see if the sound system was successfully working, while the crowd became relatively quiet, “Okay, ladies and gentlemen. It seems as if all things are ready to go.” He held his thumb up towards the staff members in the back to get the all clear before continuing on, “My name’s Waldo and I’ll be your host for today’s tournament. I’m sure a few of you may be wondering as to why it’s called what it is, but in regards to that, all I can say is that this isn’t your ordinary tourney. Do not expect to win solely on your strength, magic, speed, or intelligence. It will require a Jack of All Trades to be able to win each event, but with that in mind, if you are not particularly capable of winning such a randomized event, you must also consider whether your opponent is or is not undergoing the same worries as you are.” This game was one that was meant to confuse the participants, turning up the anticipation and the entertainment for the crowd around them, “With that said, let’s have a look at our contestants today,” he turned towards the board as he began listing off the names. OOC Looking around the still packed out park there wasn't too much of interest to note, people were shuffling around in the limited space and were trying to get a better look of the stage for the upcoming event, and people were murmuring this or that, but nothing that grabbed Kain's senses in particular. What did get his attention however was all the people moving in and out like worker insects, the inu-hanyou's eyes attracted to and spotting out motion more readily than most people, to the point he nearly missed the gaudily dressed man standing on the stage, though once he had noticed him he did a double take and took in his details. Choice in colour aside, if he was in the centre of the stage, with a microphone, he was probably just maybe connected to the tournament. "Might even be Waldo?" the half demon thought to himself, as certainly his choice in fashion would be enough alone to classify him as whacky. (Well, the whacky technically applied to the tournament, but Kain was already convinced it applied to Waldo.) Surely enough the strange man after quieting down the crowd a bit he spoke up, announcing that everything was ready to go, and that he was indeed called Waldo and the host the events of the day; going on to talk about the tournament, and how it was different, that it would require a Jack of All Trades. That...made Kain worry, his ears drooping, his only decent ability was fighting, right? He shook his head slightly as he thought, that wasn't entirely true. It had been a while since he had to use some of his previous talents, but the inu-hanyou was good at stealing things sleight of hand, and wilderness survival. Plus, while it didn't register to him because he lived with them every day, but also because of his heightened senses he could do some things humans couldn't. So the half demon started to calm down, his ears sitting back up as Waldo also made an excellent point, with any luck Kain could win this. The introduction to the tournament over (if it could be called that with how vague it was), Waldo started to list off names, "Benjamin, Jack, Ryuu, Ken, Jirou, King, Clyde, Zak, Takeo, Teito, Rin, Mikage, Tiger, Shima, Abe, and Kain. If you would all be so kind, please make your way to the stage now, so we can start the first round." Looking around, Kain could spot a few people moving, though trying to scope out all 15 others in a crowd like this would be difficult, and kind of pointless when he was about to see them all anyway, so he just shrugged and started to make his way towards the stage. Besides even if he did want to try and pick them all out, he wasn't entirely sure he could; the half demon wasn't entire sure way but the idiot entering under the name Tiger annoyed him, and he kind of wanted to show Tiger what a real beast was capable of. |

Zak listened in to what this totally suspicious looking character had to say, but he knew it probably wasn’t best to judge someone so easily, even if they had such a… peculiar taste in fashion. Just like a book’s cover, not everything was what it appeared to be so he figured that it was best to consider him a little more spontaneous rather than anything else and it should work out rather well. Than man spoke about the tournament, claiming that the tournament wasn’t a brawling specific tourney, contrary to what many people had originally been thinking. In this specific spinoff, it’d cover all sorts of traits to win and he specifically stated that only a Jack of All Trades would be able to win. Not to mention, all of the rounds in the tournament would be completely randomized, meaning that nobody would be certain as to which individual would have the advantage over their respective opponent. Without further delaying this perplexing event, Mister Waldo began listing off the names of the stars of the show, inviting them to stand next to the host on the stage. He read them off in order, according to their locations on the tournament brackets, which meant that Zak would be the eight to proceed forward. Understanding that he should head up the stairs to stand alongside Waldo on the stage, he did so hesitantly, but didn’t speak a word unlike a few of the other contestants. The ones that actually were talking consisted of those that were trying to figure out what kind of events the tournament would be comprised of; some of which ranged anywhere from apple bobbing competitions to one finger pushups. Either way, nobody was certain as to what could happen and as everyone took their place on the stage, the orchestrator of it all acted as if there was nothing of concern, “Ah, and here they all are. Quite a diverse group, I’d say.” As if he was one to talk, oddly enough, “Well, before I begin talking about miscellaneous and trivial information, how about we actually stay on topic? The tournament itself will include up to four separate rounds in which the rules are currently undetermined. However, once the actual event is randomly generated, it shall include both the concept and rules of the event.” Currently, everything seemed quite understandable, if a little shady, and Zak was actually surprised by how smoothly such an odd event was going by. “Now, without further ado, let us find out what the first round’s event shall be.” Behind the gentleman on the background of the stage was a lacrima display that showed a design similar to a slot machine that revealed three separate sections. The sections quickly picked up pace as it began to spin, but after reaching its maximum velocity, it gradually slowed down. Once it came to a halt, Waldo laughed a little as he turned to the audience, “So it shall be done, the first round shall be the water balloon fight! Contestants, please make your way to the backstage so that we may prepare.” |

There certainly some interesting chatter happening on the stage as the last of the contestants got into place, Kain being one of them being number 16 of 16 and all. Apple bobbing, three-legged races, and one fingered push-ups were just some of the round ideas that the wolf-boys twitching ears picked up. What was this, a tournament, or a children's party? Though mildly confused and a little agitated, he made himself take a deep breath to calm his thoughts. If the rounds were simple, silly, or childish, that just meant the half demon had no excuse not to win them, and besides he was doing this for the prize money, so he could at least partly payback Noel for his generosity so far in providing a home for the Inugami mage. The fact his tail was wagging a bit faster had to do with that, and nothing to do with the opportunity to partake in activities he never got as part of his childhood. Honest. Finally in position, Kain had an awkward smile on his face as he looked out at the crowd, ears a little limp. The puppy did not do well with crowds, would they all really be watching? "Just ignore them Kain...which is so easy with your senses..." sighing a little as Waldo spoke, something about them being a diverse group. Something to distract him, the wolf-boy looked over the assembled people, and was amused that for once he might not be the strangest person in the room (well, aside from Waldo, who would easily take that title out). Still, no time for gawking, as their wacky host started to explain the rules of the tournament. Four rounds, that bit was simple enough. Random determined events...huh, really? "Because that bods so well for organisation." As quickly as the (limited) information about the contest had been supplied, announcing, or rather deciding, the first round happened; Water Balloon Fighting, as divined by slot machine. From the whispers he had overheard, he had suspected the round would be odd, but the fact the first event was literally 'Water Balloon Fighting' still surprised Kain, ears sitting up as his head tilted to the side like a confused or curious dog. The Fairy Tail mage really had to remember the name of the contest was "Waldo's Whacky Tournament" apparently if how things were going shocked him. Said wacky host was quickly ushering people backstage, as helpers for the tournament appeared on stage, the half-demon catching what looked like bits of cover and terrain being wheeled or placed onto the stage before losing sight. Waiting behind the stage, he took the chance to look over the other 15 competitor, some more staff busy filling up balloons with water (funnily enough) for the upcoming round. Of note there was two that seemed like brothers, or maybe just best friends, sticking together and wishing each other luck, a male with brilliantly pink hair, and an idiot that smelled human while wearing a tiger face mask. Kain was kind of hoping that they both got through the first round just so he could punch "Tiger" in the face...or beat him at whatever the round was, he'd settle for. |

Zak didn't know how to react to the announcement, "A... water balloon fight?" Granted, this might be called "Waldo's Whacky Tournament," but he didn't expect it to fully live up to it's whimsical name. At first, Zak figured it wasn't going to be a very serious tournament amongst his fellow competitors, but as the boy scanned the facial features of his nearby opponents, it turned out that their confused expressions turned into ones of edgy anticipation. He didn't know exactly what might have been going through the minds of those individuals, whether it was that they were in it solely for the money or if they had some less common goals of just joining in with some various local competition. Honestly, some of the people could just be passersby like himself trying to make light out of their situation, but he would attempt to have some fun if it really was going to be whacky. Zak and the rest of the competitors were rushed off the stage as this was all its own form of a live entertainment performance, but the young mind mage cooperated fully and eventually, the stage was clear of participants. There was no real setup ready for each round to immediately start, though that's not even considering the fact that the staff had no clue what events would be held during each round seeing as they were randomized. Behind the stage and beyond the small chatter that arose between a few of the impatient or curious contestants, Zak sat and listened calmly to what could possibly be going on at the stage, but a general understanding was obtainable according to the words that the host was saying, "Please give us a few moments to construct the playing field for each of the following matches. Of course, this will provide plenty of variety and certainly a lot of fun to be had." Though, nothing seemed too out of place until he heard Waldo's voice return briefly, "Ladies and gentlemen, please do make some distance between the stage... A bit more..." A lot of rambling confusion could be heard, presumably from the sudden request directed towards the audience, but they seemed to work things out within a few moments, "Okay, that should be just about perfect. Come on boys, let's pick up the pace. We mustn't keep these lovely folks waiting." A harsh scraping sound could be heard as if a massive chalkboard was being clawed at by the nails of dozens of children, "Geez, just what could they be doing out there? Is a water balloon fight reeeally that complicated?" He looked towards the other similarly perplexed contestants, but none of them seemed to have a clue. Some had begun conversing, but Zak was a bit nervous, considering the conditions of their assembly, "I wonder... have they ever heard about this before?" |

Kain had a found a nearby wall and claimed it as his own as he waited, upper back and one foot leaning against the structure as his tail flicked agitatedly behind his legs. His eyes were closed as he let out a long sigh, though his ears were still twitching occasionally, picking up fragments of conversation. "What could be taking them so long..." the wolf-boy looking towards where they're exit to re-enter the stage, pointed ears sitting up as their wacky host spoke up again, though he was speaking loudly enough for everyone to hear...though likely aiming it at the audience. "Good to know they'll know more than the actual competitors," Kain resting his head against the wall, relaxing a bit as he waited, eyes closing...before they scrunched up and he opened them again, they were moving the crowd back by the general muffed sound of people moving, but what reason would they have for... A loud, harsh sound filled the air, the Fairy Tail mage letting out a high-pitched yelp, an actual canine-like yelp, ears going flat against his head as he growled softly having recovered from the initial shock. More than a few of the contestants glanced at the wolf-boy, but most were quick enough to go back to their own confused conversations about what was going on out on the stage. There wasn't any more announcements, other than the occasional reassurance to the audience from Waldo that they were nearly done, as more dragging sounds, though significantly less harsh and much softer, more like wood on wood filled the air. It felt like it took ages, but maybe Kain was just still annoyed about the early attempt at deafening him without warning; but eventually staff started to usher the 16 of them back onto the stage proper, as their weird host proclaimed they were ready to proceed, "Now, of course we just need out contestants back on stage, ah, here they are now~" As Kain entered the stage, the staff apparently not too worried with number order, and sending them towards the middle of stage towards Waldo, it was hard to say was more noticeable. The fact that the stage was much larger now...the now obvious reason for moving the crowd, and possibly the source of that dreaded noise before; or the fact that the stage now looked more like a cross between an obstacle course and a battlefield, various bits of terrain and obstacles littering the stage, the Inugami mage's eyes darting around the stage to try and pick up any more interesting details. |
