Oshibana is like any other train town. It's got a busy market and shops that are filled with wares for passing travelers on the train. Situated near the end of the line, Oshibana is always swarming with people trying to make deals.

Max had been staying in one of the many inns by the train depot and life was starting to become routine. He was starting to feel like a local and the rent on his small place was coming due soon. "How do I make some quick cash? I may be able to convince a merchant or a passerby to purchase some goods, but what do I sell?"

Max pondered the next step of his plan when he heard a loud crash. A young man with short light brown hair had been walking by a pottery shop when a vase had fallen over. The man hadn't knocked it over but he was nearby the shop owner ran out and started screaming about paying for the vase. Max wandered over and tried to calm the shopkeeper down.

"Whoa," claimed Max. "This young lad didn't knock anything over." Max looked at the table and noticed the uneveness. "Your table is a little wobbly. Are you saying he broke it?"

"Um....um..." the shopkeeper stammered. The young man was diligently scribbling something in his notebook .

"I'll tell you what," Max continued. I'll buy the broken pot from you for 1/10 of your nomal asking price. You have 1 minute to decide. Are you going to sell it or not?"

"Um..." the man replied. "1/5th and not a penny less. I need to feed my family."

Max sighed as he looked at the price tag littered amonst the broken shards. He ws trying to sell it for 20,000 Jewels. "You're lucky I'm in a generous mood," replied Max. "1/5th it is."

Zak looked up from his notebook, finding the small town of Oshibana, though small might be a bit of an understatement. It was nothing more than a train town, filled with a marketplace and various shops that citizens and local traders inhabited. It was quite an unusual pit stop for Zak to make, but he been informed by his father before his big day that this would make for an excellent sight. He was right, it wasn't what Zak had expected, but he still loved the noise the trains would make as they made their way on the tracks.

Stopping by the marketplace first, he browsed across a few of the stalls that were set up, but nothing seemed relevant to Zak's interests, even though they were some pretty interesting merchandise. Walking past the stalls into the shop area, where businesses had their own buildings, he made his way in and out quickly without paying too much attention to detail. He'd walk into a store, examine its contents, then walk out scribbling down notes about some of the establishments. He did so for the Key, Clothing, and Tool shops, but by the time he made it to the next in line, the Pottery shop, Zak made a critical mistake during his distraction.

"Oh, no!" He yelled out in a panic as he bumped into a stand with a vase perched on top. It was beautifully crafted and was more than likely out of budget for the poor lad, but the thought was interrupted by the fatal sound of the ceramic shattering. The owner of the shop was at the door in a heart beat, "You damn punk! That cost me 20,000 jewels!" Oh, geez. There was no way Zak would be able to repay him, "I'm.. I didn't mean to..." However, some fine gentleman approached the two before the owner burst into a fit of rage, "This young lad didn't knock anything over. Your table is a little wobbly. Are you saying he broke it?"

Wobbly? No, I'm pretty sure I bumped it.. It was risky, but Zak would have to go along with the stranger's accusation, whether it was true or not. However, the shop keeper seemed a bit irritated and offended when he heard the claim. Zak noticed how he seemed to be trying to defend himself, but perhaps he was trying to get some quick cash from some target. Be it invaluable experience that could help in his training, he scribbled down the emotions of the owner for examination later. The stranger had offered to pay him a tenth of the original price for the vase, but the shop keeper tried to haggle it to a fifth, in which the stranger agreed. As the owner left to retrieve a broom and dustpan to collect the broken fragments, Zak spoke up to his momentary saviour, "Thank you.. for the help."

Max waited patiently as the man returned with the broom. "I can clean it up," Max stated," so please go back and help your other customers." Max looked at the young man. He was scribbling notes into his book

The shopkeeper looked at Max strangely as he turned around. When he saw the other customers, his attitude transformed into a jovial nature.

Max turned at looked to the young man. "Thank you....for the help," the young man said.

"Do me a favor and make sure they don't look this way," Max stated calmly. When the young man turned around, Max looked at the pile of shards and quietly said, "Timewarp - Rewind." A black rune appeared on his hand as the shards grew black and reformed the vase. When the vase was whole again, Max picked it up in his left hand and then tapped the young man on the shoulder. "Let us be on our way."

When they were a few blocks away, Max showed him the vase. It was as perfect as before it had fallen over. "Thank you," Max said. "I've been intersted in that vase for a week now, but he wouldn't lower the price. Because it was broken, he thought it was junk. if I were you, I'd avoid his shop for a couple of days." Max looked at he shock on the young man's eyes and chuckled. "If you don't mind, I could you a man with your observational talents."

When the shop owner made his way back outside with broom and dustpan in hand, he was instantly denied the privilege of cleaning up the mess, "I can clean it up so please go back and help your other customers." He seemed to actually care about the businessman's time and money, already helping in two ways apparently. However, one the burly figure was out of earshot, the stranger instead warned Zak to make sure that the owner didn't return. Odd, but he had no reason to complain, that is, until the stranger began to work his own kind of magic. With a perplexed look on Zak's face, he got his answer, "Timewarp - Rewind."

The hundreds or so shards of the vase all pieced back together like an incredible three-dimensional puzzle, but he was quickly whisked away from the scene. "Thank you, I've been interested in that vase for a week now, but he wouldn't lower his price." Oh, was that all this was about? Well.. To be honest it's actually pretty clever. The lad broke into his thoughts as he gave him an offer, "If you don't mind, I could use a man with your observational talents."

It was a nice little compliment to say the least, and after all, Zak did owe him a favor in return for his act of kindness, "Sure.. I could help out." An intriguing look swept over his face as he realized that they still didn't know each others' names, "Uh, I'm Zak. Zak Kokoro." Lifting his arm to shake the gentleman's hand, he awaited his self-introduction. Perhaps it would be something extravagant, or simply his name, but this man was quite mysterious and it would prove quite beneficial to follow this man around. Taking out his notebook, Zak wrote the lad's name down and check mark next to it signifying that he's a helpful fellow.

"Pleased to meet you, Zak," Max said shaking the young man's hand."You can call me Mr. P. I know it sounds mysterious, but it's for your safety. The people I deal with prefer that there is a level of anonimity." Max looked at the Zak oddly because he towered over the 4'8" lad. "But anyways, what I would like for you to do is to visit every other pottery merchant in the city. Please identify and catalogue these pieces that you feel have value. It is important that you do not go to the same merchant twice and it is important that they do not remember you or your face. For your efforts, I will give you 20% of what profit I can get for selling the goods. Does that seem reasonable and acceptable to you?"

Max waited patiently as Zak pondered his offer.

"Remember," Max gently reminded, "the point is to observe without looking like you are observing." Max could tell that Zak was used to being ignored. "Come with me. I want to show you something." Max led Zak to a upscale bakery and coffee shop. The patrons were all dressed in various degrees of formal dress, but there were a few people at one of the counters who were in poloshirts and slacks. Max looked at Zak and could tell that he felt a little underdressed for this place. As Max and Zak entered the shop, a little bell chimed. A young lady, about the age of 16 with a good looking figure, came up and greeted them.

"Welcome to the Café de la Paix. My name is Antionette. How may I assist you?" she said with a slight accent.

"Pleased to meet you. My nephew and I were interested in sitting at a table if there was one avaliable."

"Oui, monsieur. Suis-moi."

Max and Zak followed the young lady. She was wearing a maid outfit that seemed form fitting to her young body. Max leaned over to Zak and whispered, "Are you impressed with this place? We shall see how well you can blend in here."

The man took his hand with a firm grasp, introducing himself simply as 'Mr. P.' It was for security measures, or at least that's what the man had claimed it to be, but he seemed to be doing it in the best interest of the two. Considering how useful his magic is, Zak had no problem understanding why he had remained so secretive. However, there was a request that the man had for Zak, one that went against his natural opinion of good and bad, but bound by the favor he owed Mr. P, he unwillingly accepted. He would have to walk into other similar pottery shops and stalls, repeating a similar fate for any valuable vases along the way, but he did offer Zak a portion of the profit.

"I... I guess so." He was hesitant, but he couldn't refuse. Mr. P seemed elated to have a partner in his small time crimes, or better yet, scams. He informed the lad that "the point is to observe without looking like you are observing." Zak knew what the man meant by this, to remain vigilant, yet appear clueless. Inviting him to a nearby coffee shop, Zak followed suit. Upon arriving, they were encountered by a young girl just older than himself that appeared to be the waitress amongst the many tables that sat under the elaborately decorated ceiling. "Welcome to the Café de la Paix. My name is Antionette. How may I assist you?"

Mr. P spoke up for the two of them, claiming that Zak was his nephew and that they would like a table. The girl raised her finger as she left, letting them know it wouldn't take long. When she was out of earshot, the man leaned down to Zak's short level and informed him that he needed to blend in. It wasn't hard to blend into the crowd in the marketplace or at a family restaurant, but this place seemed to exquisite for his tastes. "What do you mean? Are.. we going to do that? Here?" However, before Mr. P had the chance to reply to the boy's answer, Antionette had returned, "Sorry for the wait, if you would, please follow me."

"What do you mean? Are.. we going to do that? Here?" Zak asked. They were interrupted by Antionette returning.

Max chuckled to himself as they walked to thier table in the back. When they were seated Max explained himself. "No we're not going to do anything like what happed back there here. This is merely a test of your ability to look inconspicuous. In here, you stick out. The point of coming here, well aside from a decent pastry, is to illustrate that point. If you look like you are supposed to be somewhere, most people do not question it. The better part of being able to blend in is the research. So, what would you like? Don't worry about the prices, they're really reasonable and they don't ask questions. In other words, perfect for my line of work. And don't worry, I can afford this place. I can tell you're...disturbed by my line of work. Nothing I have done, however it may seem immoral to some people, is against the law. I'm not asking you to smash up a store, just use your skills to see what is popular."

When Antionette returned, Max ordered for himself. "I'd like a croissant with a little jam, blackberry, if avaliable, and a black coffee." Max and Antionette looked at Zak.

"And, sir, what would you like?" Antionette asked. As she looked at him, she stiffled a little giggle and batted her big brown eyes at him.

It seemed this was actually going to be nothing more than little treat, or a test, if you'd like to call it that. It wasn't hard for Zak to fit in most places, seeing as how everyone treated him as a kid, which he couldn't deny with his lack of vertical growth. However, Mr. P did refer to how he worked, and relieving a large burden from Zak's shoulders, informed the kid that it was in no way illegal. "Well, that's good.." He still didn't think it was fair to go around taking advantage of others whilst they're trying to get money, but it seems like that's how the man made a living. It was quite a perplexing situation for Zak as he sat in thought, but the waitress walked over soon afterwards.

Mr. P ordered first, requesting nothing more than a croissant and a black coffee, which was one of the few drinks that Zak disliked. However, the girl had turned to Zak with a smile on her face, "And, sir, what would you like?" He hadn't been to a restaurant of this style very often so rather than asking for a menu, he figured he'd follow Mr. P's advice, "I'll take a banana nut muffin and some green tea." The muffin may have seemed childish, but he hoped that the variety of tea would counteract that. The girl nodded her head and let out a giggle, "Will that be all for today?"

"I think so, thank you." Zak spoke up, which was unusual for his quiet self. It wasn't easy to always stay in character, but luckily, he didn't have much going on at the moment. As the girl left, gracefully moving across the floor, Zak looked back at his new acquaintance, "How was that?" He had hoped that it was good, considering this was nothing more than a test, but knowing the tricks and clever games that the mysterious Mister P seemed to play, he may not think so lightly of the boy.

"Interesting," replied Max. "You can tell a lot about a person based on what they order. For my order, it states that I am very bold and detail oriented. It also says that I don't mince words. With your order, it states that you are a little overwhelmed by your surroundings and that you tend to play things safely. It also says that you are trying to test the waters as well. These things change as you get older and more experienced." Max chuckled to himself. There were some things that he was sharing with Zak that he normally didn't share with many people. He could tell Zak was a good kid. "When you get bigger, you may find that the world is not as clear cut as you might think. Are there good and evil? Yes, there are, but people do what they feel that they can get away with. Take the merchant we dealt with this morning. I can guaruntee that he paid a mere fraction of the normal asking price for the vase. It is only when he had to face the possibity of having no money for the product did he think about how much he could get for it. How is what I do any different than what the merchant does?"

Before Zak could reply, Antionette returned with the snacks and drinks. "Here you gentlemen go," she stated as she handed the orders to the right people. When she handed Zak his plate there was a slip of paper attatched to the bottom of the plate. "Is there anything else?"

Max replied, "No, thank you." Max handed her a 50 Jewel note. Antionette winked at Zak as she hustled off to another table. "If you have a reason to be somewhere, and you are dressed like you belong there, then they will not notice you and will talk freely."

The man seemed to be right on the mark when he mentioned what he ordered, Mr. P did seem quite mature and sophisticated with the two items he requested. However, the same couldn't be said for Zak, who ordered something he naturally enjoyed, a kid's snack and some tea. Though as he listened in on what else that Mr. P had to say, including the borderlines between what he thought defined good and bad. As the man described it, the two existed, but you couldn't quite classify a deed or action as one or the other. It's more dependent on where it is between the two extremes, and that each person had their own definition of where those ends were. He ended his little lesson with the key point that he was trying to make, "How is what I do any different than what the merchant does?"

It was well timed, as the girl had appeared in his peripheral with a small tray that carried two plates and two mugs. The first of which was given to Mr. P, "Here you gentlemen go," and the next was given to Zak, "Is there anything else?" The boy shook his head left and right gently as the man put his gesture into words, "No, thank you." As she accepted the 50 Jewel note from Mr. P, she gave a wink to Zak making her way back to the kitchen. Zak blushed a bit as he noticed, but he still didn't speak up until she made it through the door.

"... Did you see that?" He wasn't sure as to whether or not he imagined it, but he didn't want to mistakingly think otherwise. Perhaps it was actually meant in gratitude for the generous tip that Mr. P gave, but it was embarrassing nonetheless. He looked down at the plate to see the muffin that he ordered as well as the cup of freshly brewed tea. However, his brows furrowed in curiosity when he saw that there was a cherry placed alongside the item, "Why is there a cherry on my plate?" He obviously had been socially different than many of the kids that lived in the larger cities, seeing as he lived with his father in a small town. Unfortunately, Zak did not appear to understand the symbolic meaning behind it and, even worse, had yet to notice that there was a note attached to the bottom of his plate.
