Another day meant another job. Clear didn't have any specific plans in mind, and after he took care of some minor things during the day, it was soon evening. He wasn't planning to take on a job originally, but a notice on the board caught his attention. It was flagged as urgent, someone needed this mission taken care of during that same evening. Clear was curious about what kind of mission that could be and so he picked up the paper. A baby-sitting mission. No wonder nobody cared to get it. The majority of the mages of Tartaros were... not suited for this kind of mission, to say the least. The children would probably end up with serious cuts and burns if left to the people of this guild. Clear took this as a personal mission to himself, to not only get the job done but make sure a responsible person look after these kids. And the only people capable of doing something like that without utterly messing up, were his team. Yes, Clear had recently formed a team with San, the only person in the guild he really got along with. So considering how they were a team and they already did all their missions together, Clear thought it proper to invite him along. Looking around him, Clear could not spot San in the guild house. Strange, he was usually drinking at that time of day. Or any time of day, for that matter. Clear picked up the piece of paper and went up the stairs to the dorms, San should be in his room. He reached his room, the one he recalled San saying was his, knocked on the door and waited. It was about that time that Suina decided to make her appearance. "What are you doing Clear? Whose room is this?" she asked. "This is San's room. Since he's not down at the guild hall I figured I should look for him here. There is a mission I want to go on, and since we're a team it's only natural that I invite him to tag along." Clear answered. Suina made a wide grin across her face, putting Kuilei aside, she liked San as well. The way he acted all reluctant most of the time was very amusing to her. And of course there was Kuilei, the one she liked most of all. The golem who for some reason was kinder than his master and even kinder than most humans. She still had no idea why Kuilei was always so nice to her, but she enjoyed his innocent side a fair amount. And a mission was an exciting event for her. |

The theory was correct; San was indeed sitting on the floor of his room in the guild for once, instead of attempting to get drunk in the guild hall. The sun was already prepared to set, and the undead mage was sitting near the middle of the room facing the window; his was an especially simple room, devoid of even the most basic of normal furniture - no tables, chairs, or beds in his place. Even the restroom had been converted. No, the only things that covered the emptiness of the room were a series of scrolls with ink paintings, which literally took over every inch of the walls and ceiling, as well as San's blade lying on one corner of the room, a few plants growing in pots near where the sunlight usually came in, and of course a certain golem sitting right next to him. "Master San, did you hear that? I think someone is knocking on our door," Kuilei uttered once he heard the knock; so few people had ever done so that the golem never even bothered keeping track. San, unfazed, was still staring outwards as he spoke. "Well then, there would be no reason to let them enter, would there?" His voice was unusually tranquil at the moment, due to his current condition - watching the sunset, his body was reacting to the natural phenomenon, and at this current moment there were a horde of sprites flying all around his room. "But Master San, the spirits of the dead - they keep flying everywhere," the golem complained. "What does it matter? If someone wishes to see me, they should be able to ignore this as a mere distraction." Still not entirely at rest, the golem got up anyways, and opened the door wide enough for whoever wanted to see them to look into a room full of paintings, a few plants, a man sitting in the center, and a complete swarm of multicolored sprites flying about lazily through the entire place. "Suina? Clear? What are you doing at this hour? I thought this was usually uh...what do you call it...dinnertime? Yes, the time for dining!" The golem was surprised, but pleasantly so - even moreso since he caught sight of Suina. |

The door opened and it was Kuilei that greeted them. Typical of the duo, it was unlikely that San would come to answer the door in the first place. Clear glanced inside the room, it was pretty unusual and set up in a way that made you wonder what exactly its owner was thinking. He payed it no mind, he already knew that San was an eccentric person, his room reflected his personality perfectly. "Indeed, this is usually dinnertime, but I need you for something. It's a rather urgent mission that has to be completed tonight, and since nobody bothered to take it up, I figured I should. And, well, would I be wrong to assume you don't actually have anything better to do with your time?" Clear said, his words directed mostly at San who was just lying on the floor surrounded by his sprites. Kind of made Clear wonder, did San even sleep at all? "Will you come along, will you?" Suina asked, her words directed mostly at Kuilei. This time was quite the curious combination, the masters getting along with each other and the pets doing the same. And yet, Clear couldn't help but believe they were the most normal team around this guild, not without good reason. "Anyway, here's the mission briefing. A couple needs someone to watch over their triples while they are out. Three boys, two years old each. I know this is just a regular babysitting mission, but it's not like we can actually do anything more difficult with our class. I know that taking care of children is not exactly something you are good at or enjoy, but at the very least I would like Kuilei to come along. It's the perfect job for him and he will be a great help. So, are you coming along?" Clear told San. While Clear actually wanted San to tag along for his company, he didn't want to force him to go on a mission he didn't want to. Just because they were a team didn't mean that they had to agree on everything. Heck, Clear had picked all of their missions so far, San had the right to choose anytime he wanted. Not that he was the type to have any preferences. That was the way Clear considered him, the type to just stay silent and endure anything if it was for a good reason. And in this case, money was a pretty good reason to tolerate the crying of three babies. Although Clear himself enjoyed such jobs, and Kuilei was certain to as well. |

Kuilei listened intently, and though he didn't move an inch from his location, so did San. "A babysitting mission? What's babysitting? Is it like teaching?" Kuilei asked, revealing another fact of life that he knew virtually nothing about. San quickly replied, before Kuilei could demonstrate any more. "It is to take care of children, Kuilei. Not as sophisticated as educating them, but can easily be far more troublesome." The golem turned back towards him, a curious look on his face. "So will we be going, or at the very least, can I go?" He was evidently not minding the mission's task at all, San could tell that much. "Even if I did refuse, you would beg me until I concurred, would you not?" He rhetorically asked; as he did so the sprites that were swarming around the room began to fly back towards the undead mage, forming a bit of a whirlwind around him as they re-entered his body. He didn't speak any more, until the last one entered, after which San slowly stood up. "In any case, I am still in need of Jewels, you have no intention of letting down until I allow you to go, and I have no intention of allowing you to go without watching over you myself - in this case, I too, would be considered a babysitter," he quizzically announced, as he rose to his feet and walked towards the door. "I will come along, but I forewarn you that Kuilei will end up performing a majority of the labor - I simply predict this now," he answered Clear, getting out of his room and closing the door behind him. "It is for a mere evening, yes?" He asked, considering the mission. "I should be able to handle Kuilei handling triplets for an evening." With his conclusion said, San nodded, and the golem became gleeful. "Yay! So we're going to go babysitting tonight! I've never- wait, why do they call it baby sitting? This has nothing to do with actually having to sit on a person, does it? Or...does sitting on a person make them more manageable?" San sighed. Of all conclusions, you end up with the most dangerous one. |

Clear laughed at San's response to the situation. That was typical of him, always thinking about watching over Kuilei so that he didn't do anything unnecessary. However, at this point, Clear had begun wondering about that. Why was San so intent on stopping Kuilei when he rarely did anything questionable? If you asked Clear, it should be the other way around. Kuilei should be the one to watch over San so that he didn't act in a crazy manner. But Clear decided not to mention that to them, else he would put himself in a most unfavorable position. "DON'T!" Clear shouted in response to what Kuilei said last. Realizing what he just did Clear coughed with his hand covering his mouth and turned to Kuilei. "Don't say that, even as a joke. If you sit on a baby it would kill it. I don't know exactly how this term came to be, but babysitting means to watch after a baby or young child in place of its actual caretaker. We must make that absolutely nothing happens to those kids, got it?" he told Kuilei with a serious tone. "Now I see why San never leaves him out of his sight..." Clear thought as the group moved down the stairs and towards the guild's exit. It was a fine evening in Coreopsis, a pretty fitting time to make an outing. This was likely the reason this Dorian White person decided to go out with his wife that day. Clear couldn't blame him, having triplets was most likely a real handful. Taking some time off and enjoying themselves was something all parents had a right to. Checking the request paper once more, Clear led the way to the address written down on the paper. He didn't even bother asking San about it, it was already an established fact that Clear was always going to be the one to choose the way they were going, else they would find themselves lost in Magnolia. Yes, Magnolia. "A quick question before we get there, although I am pretty sure I know the answer to it already. Have you ever taken care of a child San?" Clear asked. He was fairly certain the answer was going to be no, something San had already made pretty clear on their last mission. Clear was fond of kids, he never hid that fact nor was he ashamed of it, so he had a pretty good idea of how they were supposed to fare. With San already stating that he was going to be watching over Kuilei, the two of them should take care of one baby at best. Clear was confident that he could handle the other two. |

"Caretaker for children? I may have, a while ago," San replied, thinking about it while he followed Clear; the undead mage didn't even ask the location, seeing as he knew he wouldn't know where it was anyways. "...But I doubt the children of this place and time would act anything like the ones I may have done so with. It has been, if I can recall, at minimum- what, four to five decades?" He turned to Kuilei. "Kuilei, how old were you again?" The golem also had to think for a few moments before giving a response. "I don't think I'm at fifty yet, Master San. I think I'm at maybe around forty? Forty-five? Somewhere around there." Satisfied with the answer, San turned back towards Clear. "Decades, since I have last done anything of this sort." Not a particularly reassuring answer, given what they were going to do. "However, if I take time to check, one of the spirits might be somewhat knowledgeable in the field of child care," San quickly added. "I am pretty certain that at least one of the less dangerous ones should have at least some sort of skill in occupying children." With that much considered, he quickly entered the worst-case scenario mode. "But you did say there are three of them, did you not? In that case, I wonder if they possess some sort of magic...twins with magic are amazingly troublesome in their ability to coordinate with one another, I cannot imagine how much worse so it would be for triplets." San thought aloud as they went on. "Master Yong lacks delicacy in his movements, he would be dangerous; Xie and Wu are entirely out of consideration; I have no intention of using the last one, so that leaves two for now." Kuilei knew what San was talkign about, so he chirped in. "So now it's between and old, old man, or a whimsical aristocrat?" "Something along those lines. If I were to guess, Lao-Shi would be best at something like this, but I cannot confirm it just yet." |

So San at least had a little experience with that thing. Saying that, the children he took care of forty of fifty years ago shouldn't be too different from the ones they were about to take care of. "I wouldn't worry about that if I were you. Children are always the same regardless of place or time. They are two years old, they are unlikely to have developed a unique personality. All kids want the same thing, someone to play with, feed them and take care of their messes. That's a general rule no matter where or when you are." Clear reassured San. "And even if they are triplets with magic... how advanced can it be even if they do possess it? I doubt any child can do anything we will be unable to handle." Clear stated. They were dealing with babies, after all, what was the worst thing they could do? San was being overly cautious like usual, just like him, never stopping for a moment even when dealing with infants. Or was it because they were dealing with them that he got so serious? Should they mess up this job, not only their own reputation but that of their guild would also be at stake. And if something happened to those boy... well, Clear didn't want to imagine the consequences. Clear then listened to the conversation between San and Kuilei about what summon would be the most fitting for the situation. Clear had encountered some of them in the past, most of them didn't feel reliable for the job they were taking up. But San knew that far better than Clear did, he was not going to call for his most troublesome ones. "I think we will be able to manage even without you calling on your summons. Our numbers are already higher than the kids, we can afford to have one person for each of them." Clear commented. And if the situation got really out of hand, then they could rely on the summons. With this and that, the group finally reached their destination. An average house on one of the streets of Coreopsis, the usual client for these missions. "It's not like a rich person would file in a simple request with a mage guild. They usually have staff to take care of their children." he thought. Taking a deep breath before heading to the door, Clear took off his hood and put on his friendliest face. They couldn't look like scary people to the parents of the babies, that would make them cautious for their children's safety. After preparing himself, Clear knocked on the door. "Hmmm...what a two year old is capable of...you can tell now, that I am far out of touch with being around children, can you not?" San replied. "But yes; if they are as you say, then I guess our job will be made infinitely easier. Here is to hoping that we do not end up victims of a botched kidnapping ploy," the undead man finished, as they walked up the steps to the door. Standing several feet behind and to the side of Clear, San was trying to make himself look as domestically-friendly as possible; simply put, it wasn't working well. Even Kuilei, who was standing on the front yard with a wave and merry glowing eyes of radiating magic, looked friendlier than him. From outside the entrance, even San could hear the hustle and bustle of a household of three triplets; sounds like something banging on a wooden surface, something being thrown, and the like. A few moments later, the door finally opened to reveal a middle-aged man with brown hair and green eyes, rather lanky and unimpressive in appearance but dressed in a nice-suit - or rather, a suit that would look nice if it wasn't so wrinkled. Simply put, he looked utterly exhausted. Someone had obviously had no time for proper laundry. Peering into the house, one would find a mess of a living-dining room, with things strewn all over the floor, the tables, a mass of uncleaned dishes in the sink, and an equally-tired woman in a relatively nice-looking dress, hugging onto two young boys while a third had attached himself to her leg. The man looked them over for a few seconds, as if trying to figure out where they were from, before immediately calling the woman over. Within no more than thirty seconds, Clear and San would find three toddlers being shoved into their arms, a woman already halfway down the road, and the man shaking San's hand wildly. "You must be the mages that came to babysit my kids; thank you, thank you, thank you so much. I'm Dorian White, now, we'll be back at maybe around ten to midnight, so if you can just entertain the kids, let them have dinner, we would be so gracious, and if you put them to bed we'll love you forever in the non-homo way. Oh, and Michael doesn't like to eat his veggies, Delian hates showering, and Zachary bites if you try to put him to bed. Thank you, thank you, and see you later!" He practically vanished right afterwards, leaving an absolutely bewildered San standing there with one of the toddlers in his arms. "...Clear, do you ever have the feeling that some of our clients need a bit of help more professional than a babysitting service? Perhaps a life coach, or a support group...or a new identity?" He almost couldn't believe how desperate the parents were, simply throwing the children into their arms and skidding away. |

Things went more smoothly than expected as the toddlers' parents practically shoved the kids into Clear's and San's arms then left right afterwards. "I'm not one to judge people, but simply the fact that they resort to calling for help from a dark mage guild, the most insane one at that, simply shows how desperate they are. But I will agree that most of our clients so far have been rather... weird." Clear stated. And now they were left in a house that looked more like an abandoned war shelter than a place where you would raise children. The children didn't seem to mind an awful amount that their parents left, they simply latched on to their new "hosts" for a few seconds before trying to leave their arms with all their might. "Ok, if we're going to do this properly we need to assign some roles. Seeing as you're not really that familiar with kids and you also have Kuilei to worry about, you should only get one kid. I can handle the other two, don't worry about me." Clear told San with confidence, although whether his confidence was correctly placed or not was going to show later on. But they still had to care for two year olds, how difficult could it be? "You take care of Michael, I'll watch after Delian and Zachary." Clear picked the boys for no particular reason. Hopefully, their clothes had their initials sewn onto them so it was possible to tell them apart. Clear always wondered how parents managed to tell twins apart, so this was a method used. "Though what would they do if the clothes got mixed up?" Clear thought. After struggling to be freed from Clear's grasp for a couple of minutes, Zachary resorted to biting his hand. Following a yell of pain, Clear let go of the two toddlers who immediately took off to do whatever it was they were planning to in the house. In contrast to most people, Clear considered this rather adorable. Then he thought back to the children's parents and realized why they looked so exhausted. Slamming his fists together and donning a determined look, Clear went after the two kids. He already made sure not to bring his weapons over in the first place, so he didn't carry any dangerous weapon for them to get injured with. His bare hands and magic was all he was going to need to keep up with these kids. Heading into the living room, the kids were already causing a mess by painting on the furniture. |

San almost immediately gave the child into his golem's open and inviting arms - "Kuilei, this one is all yours for now. I have a feeling I may have a more important task at hand." Entering the house behind Clear and two of the triplets, the third one squirming within Kuilei's tight-but-delicate grasp, San realized that he had his work cut out for him. "At least now we know why they were so desperate; I do not blame them. I have half a mind thinking that burning this place down might simply improve how it looks," he grunted, though he really had no intention of doing such a thing. No, he had a golem to watch over - though with a place looking like this, he already began having difficulty keeping track of Kuilei in the mess of colors and objects strewn all over the place. Perhaps due to his shades, but it felt somewhat as if the golem was beginning to blend in the background, and San still wasn't completely certain if Kuilei was fully understanding of his own strength. "This...is...a mess..." So of course, the next step was logical. With a sudden wave of his arm, San sent a small horde of sprites flying from his sleeves, which swiftly molded themselves into a summon whom Clear was probably not unfamiliar with by now. "Well, hiya there San! This doesn't look quite like something you'd summon me in. Did something happen?" A well-built man with a large gourd on his back stood in the middle of the mess, with an unimpressed San staring at a golem hugging on to a certain still-squirmy toddler. "Wu. If you have not noticed yet, there-" "WAIT A MINUTE. HOLD UP. Why are there babies here? And kiddie toys? And baby food? Don't tell me- you're taking care of children?!" The summon stared at San with a mixture of disbelief and utter humor, regarding the situation as hilarious. "Of all people, for you-" He stopped, narrowly dodging a well-thrown wood block that San found conveniently on the ground near him. The undead mage spoke matter-of-factly. "Since I am occupied watching Kuilei being occupied with this current...task, you are to make things easier." The Alchemist Wu cocked his head to the side in confusion. "Eh? How so?" "Arrange. Organize. Sweep. Wash. Clean. Store. Dry. Wipe. Everything." "EH?! What? You want me to-" "I said, everything. Or else I will kill you with ennui." |
