In the woods a medium distance from Tully Village, a squirrel sat on a branch, eyes wide and surveying the area while it took occasional bites of a nut. Meanwhile, downwind, a seventeen year old in blue clothes made a white seal with a celtic skull in the middle of the air, pulling his bow and an arrow out of it as he crept just close enough to where the squirrel was in bowshot. He needed a better bow if this close was bowshot, but at least it was an easy shot. Slowly, he drew his arrow back, taking careful aim at the rodent. Releasing the string, the arrow flew straight into the squirrel's head. The broad arrowhead rendered the head... pretty messed up, but the rest of the squirrel fell out of the tree. Slinging his bow across his back, he walked over to the rodent, retrieving his arrow and sending it back to his Exquip dimension. He picked up the squirrel and set off walking, looking for a campsite. The green-haired wizard made his way through some surprisingly thin trees and brush, searching for a place with some fallen deadwood and a clear bit of ground for a fire. The sunlight got in his face as the forest thinned out even more, and he shielded his eyes and kept walking, stopping when his feet tapped on cobblestone with that distinct *click*. He lowered his hand and found himself standing on the edge of a village, dead squirrel in hand. Walking a bit forward, he saw a large number of older people. A little embarrassed, but resigned to the fact that he had already made his first impression, he raised his voice a bit to ask a question to everyone in the area as he held the squirrel up higher. "Anyone have a stove where I can cook this? We can split it 50/50." |

"Really now? Again Ms. Jenkins?" "I pay you don't I? Here's your money, now get a hold of that bastard!" Reijo would let off a weak sigh with a bit of a cough to it, as he would take the money and place it in his pocket before he would roll up his sleeves, revealing his tattoos as they began to turn reddish in hue. "Hey! Mr. Jenkins, Beth wants to talk again!" A spirit, visible to only him would appear from through the wall. "Tell that bastard to stop mooching on our Leftovers!" spouted off the client, a recent regular. "Ms. Jenkins, please. I thought I told you he can hear you himself," Reijo would try to mediate. "What's that old hag blabbering about now? She wouldn't have so many leftovers if she could cook a decent meal!" the ghost retorted. "Mr. Jenkin's responds that he wouldn't have any leftovers to eat of yours, if you didn't have any." "Dammit boy if you're going to be a speaker for me do it word for word!" "When did Bert get so polite? I swear it's like you're watering down what he would say!" Needless to say, the work of a medium was never easy. After about an hour of back and forth raging couple disputes, Reijo would leave the Jenkins abode questioning why the old bag doesn't just ask for an Exorcism. He would wander down the street, heading to his space just at the edge of town. His eyes weren't too good as of late, but he could remember a route rather well, so he wasn't entirely lost. By the time he had made it to the block where he lived, he would notice a relatively blotchy figure holding up a brown item of sorts, asking if anyone had a stove. At first the voice sounded like a different language, but then Reijo would remember that young people had distinctly more fluent sounding voices with less straining, in other words... this was a peer! Snatching up the occasion he would throw up a hand in waving and spoke, "I've got a stove!" His relatively weak voice that practically fit in with the rest of society rang clearly through the air that was clearly used to it, "Besides, it'd be nice to get to know someone my age for a change." The second part was a bit under his breath, though that was primarily because his speaking voice was weak due to having to speak over arguing elderly couples, as exemplified previously. |

Surprisingly, Hayden found his question answered almost immediately by what seemed to him to be the only person close to him in age in the village. Walking over to that really weak-sounding voice, he smiled at his green haired peer. "Lead the way. Hope you like squirrel." Assuming that this teen started walking, Hayden followed, bow still slung across his shoulders. Not that he expected to use it, but his Quickchange technique needed improvement. It had to have a sort of cool-down period before he could use it again, so he was stuck with the bow until then. The last time he had tried to send something back for something else without waiting, it had broken into pieces. He liked his bow. Man. Hayden thought to himself, This kid is scrawny... That much was an understatement: This teen was thin as a reed and looked half as sturdy. However, more important than an atrophied teenager, there was still the matter of where exactly he was. If he had followed his planned route, he shouldn't have encountered civilization until he got to Acalypha Town. "So... Can you tell me where we are? And why we seem to be the only people under 30 for 5 miles or so?" |

Reijo, a bit excited, would smile, and since he was on his doorstep, it wasn't hard to lead the way. He would open his door and step inside. He would walk through a room and at the edge, he would gesture to a pretty okay-looking kitchen. Everything there was already there, because there was no way in hell Reijo could lift anything in this house that weighed more than a pot. "The burners are powered by the central magic source, which is out of order so I have to power it myself normally," he explained, turning the activation dial, and gesturing to the lack of flame before he would place his hand on the lacrima in the middle and power a bit of magic into it, and a flame would ignite, ready to cook. Reijo was renting a house only a mage could get along in. Then came the question of where they were. Reijo knew this place's history like the back of his hand, since it was his prime source of income. "Well, you've managed to venture into Tully Village. This place is where old people seem to go to die. The multitude of ghosts looming through the place haunting their relatives and the homes of their enemies is the prime reason I'm here," he would explain. With that he would sit down in a chair and relax for a moment. "Anyways, you're their first visitor in ages from what I hear," he spoke, as if someone had just told him, which a passing ghost actually had. But this guy wouldn't know that. "I'm Reijo Darzi, the local Medium of Spirits and the Afterlife. What's your name?" he would inquire. |

Hayden cast his eyes around the house, curious. However, most of the items in the place looked like they had been there longer than this person had been alive, almost. Maybe he was exaggerating a litte, but the point remained that the teen didn't look like he could lift furniture. He took notice at the lack of flame on the stovetop, and reached for the lacrima that powered the appliance, but his new friend beat him to it. What are the odds that the only young person living here is a mage too? He reached for a cutting board and a knife, placing the squirrel on the board and setting to work skinning it as Reijo introduced himself and enlightened him as to their location. "I think I know where Tully Village is. I wasn't expecting to be here, though. It's a little troubling..." Maybe I should take to the roads from here on. I'm far enough away... "Anyway, I'm Hayden Katran. I'm an Exquip mage." He finished separating the skin of the squirrel, and thankfully it wasn't a big mess. Most of the animal's blood had already drained out, and the rest of it stayed on the cutting board as Hayden set to separating the organs and the different pieces of meat. He produced a pan and set to cooking the meat. "You ever had squirrel before? It's a little gamy, but it's good. How do you usually take your meat? Well, Medium, Rare?" |

"Haha! I haven't had much meat in my lifetime. Though I guess medium sounds the most befitting..." he spoke, casually ignoring the pun he had realized too late. Reijo would pipe down a moment and listen to a passing by spirit, and then said, "Make that rare, actually, a passing spirit told me that was less tough when it comes to squirrel." He smiled and sat back a moment, taking a deep sigh of relaxation, "Exquip... I think I've heard of that somewhere." It took Reijo a while to realize that this kid, who appeared to be an Archer was a mage, and had even told him what kind of mage. Reijo sucked at holding a subject, but thanks to people never really keeping a subject running in this town, he rarely had to. He was great with names and faces though. As he relaxed for a bit his eyes would also relax, being a bit more bishounen than what a person would expect, almost disgusting on his frame. "So where's your destination anyways?" he would ask, in a more relaxed, but still weak voice. |

Hayden had quickly gone about adding salt and cooking the different cuts of meat, hastily removing part of it when Reijo changed his request to rare instead of medium, placing the small pieces of meat on one plate and his own, which were cooked just a little longer to medium rare, on a different one. "Spirits, huh? Does it ever get frustrating, being able to see dead people? I bet they have a few more issues than the living ones." Hayden sucked at making light conversation out of awkward topics. When he finished cooking the squirrel, he brought the two plates to the table near Reijo, each with a fork and knife as Reijo said something about having heard of Exquip mages before. "Yeah, it's Re-equipping magic. Once I get it down, I'll be able to switch weapons whenever I need to. Right now, though, the bridging is a little unstable. If I try to use it too much, stuff breaks." He cut off a few pieces of the meat. Good, not too tough either. A quick kill without startling the animal always made the meat taste just a little better, in Hayden's opinion. Maybe it was all in his head. "My destination? I'm going to Magnolia. I'm hoping to join Fairy Tail, once I get a little more skill. There are some... personal reasons behind that." A hint of sadness snuck its way into Hayden's voice, but it was gone soon after, replaced with curiosity. "Say, how does your spirit magic work? Do you have to be near the place someone... kicked the bucket to speak with them?" |

Reijo would shrug, "Actually they pretty much have about as many issues as they died with. You'd be surprised how little changes when you can't speak with anyone without a medium." He commented in his weak manner, having a bit of a not-caring tone about it, "The only annoying part is that I was born with it, so I'm not really a trained mage." He would listen to Hayden speak about what his exquip was. It was a requipping magic, which made sense, now that Reijo heard it, but it was more advanced. A lot of mages used requip though, what makes Exquip so special? Reijo lost the thought process he had when he got an answer about where Hayden was going, "Oh, joining a guild? I'd never bothered to think about that since I have a pretty stable lifestyle as it is..." Suddenly his own magic came into question again, "Well, actually an Earthbound soul can move around freely and without any restraints on a plain just aside ours. They search for a place of peace so that they might pass on to the great beyond. My magic works by letting me communicate with them on this plain. Though I suppose they should be within earshot to have a conversation with." He explained it a bit too much, "Sorry for rambling." |

Hayden nodded as Reijo pointed out how little seemed to change with the spirits. "I'd imagine that gets pretty boring, not being able to talk with most people. As for not being trained..." The green-haired mage smiled. "You aren't missing much." He took another couple bites of his squirrel, finishing off the half that he had given himself and standing up to go and wash off the place and silverware in the sink. As he was cleaning off the items that he had used, he continued talking to Reijo. "Thanks for letting me come over and cook this. Still, I think me getting out of everyone's hair is important. Anything that needs doing around here? I'd be happy to help. Only..." After he finished washing the cookware, he would turn around to Reijo. "Spirits can see without being seen, and I'd imagine they talk to the only person around here who seems to hear them. Do you know if there's a Raven Tail mage in the town? It's in my best interests to steer clear at the moment. There's a little... tension... there." Hayden tried his best to be casual about it, but he failed utterly. He was flat-out nervous, if not outright scared, of the possibility. He did not want to face someone from Raven Tail right now, not with only a longbow and the possibility of successfully producing a shortsword and chainmail in exchange for that bow. No, when he faced down the bastard who killed his parents, he hoped to have a lot more power at his disposal, and maybe, just maybe, some backup from the most destructive guild in Fiore. |

Reijo would shrug, "A Raven Tail Guild Mage? Nah, maybe a retired one but none that would actually do any harm." He was a bit fuzzy on the totality of the population. A guy like him simply couldn't know everyone. Reijo would then notice that there was a plate in front of him that he hadn't even touched yet. He would take a bite, of the squirrel that was on his plate. He would manage to swallow it, but then he would look a bit disappointed, "Man. That ghost had no idea what he was talking about." He would continue eating his half of the squirrel anyways, seeing how he could hardly pull off tasting food anyways, and his daily bread was usually just that, bread, since that was all he could kill without using any magic. Or rather, lift. Reijo would look over at Hayden, taking another bite, and after he was done chewing it up and swallowing the rather tasteless meat, he'd asked, "So what's up with the not-like of the Raven Tail guild? I know their dark and everything, but its rare that anyone specifically steer clear of a single member of such a guild." Reijo, being rather clueless of the world, most likely hadn't a clue what he was talking about. He was pretty sure the power levels he was currently at was the best of the best. Though he'd never really had the chance to compare his magic to anyone else's. He figured no problems ever got so bad that any more power would be needed. He was a bit naive in that respect. |
