In any town in which tourism and trade are a part of the local economy, there are fools who lose their way and Oshibana Town is no different. Because so many goods and services occur in town, there is a thriving underground market as well. This market draws the attention of many unsavory characters. Max stepped off of the train in his black suit with his shoulder bag on one side. It was a bright sunny day, and Max knew it was going to be a crazy one. The underground auction was well advertised in certain affluent circles and he knew there would be some unsavory characters there. To Max, the crimal element was not his concern. He was looking for a fool: a patsy, a boob. With a goal in mind, he strolled through the station on his way to an inn. Max leisurely walked down the steps in front of the station and looked around. The area around the train station was a mixture of vendor stalls, shops, and warehouses. Everywhere he looked there were people hustling and bustling around. He spotted a ramen shack surrounded by people trying to grab a bowl before the train took off again. People were bumping into other people left and right, but were avoiding bumping into him. Max chuckled to himself as he strolled down the street. Max passed by merchant after merchant trying to see thier wares. A couple of times, he actually stopped to see what they were selling, but after looking at the quality, he chuckled to himself and walked away. Soon, he found himself near the inn in which he had a room reservation. From the corner of his eye, he spotted a young girl picking herself off of the ground. |

Navigating through the Oshinaba Town was a an easy task for most. The streets were occupied with it's citizens, and the occasional tourist who happened to pass through. The economy seemed to be on the rise, and the wares that many merchants on the streets peddled, were alluring to the eye of those who had not seen them before. Francis found herself standing outside of the doors of a small shop near the train station, the loud sounds and the fast people who zoomed passed her made her head spin. She was never raised in a town with such things, the wares though laughable to some were fantastic in her eyes. The slums of her town were not treated to such goods, and anything above the poorest of qualities were treated like fine gems. Francis focused on the things in the window, clothing of different colors were folded neatly in front of her, the brightest of the bunch where put in the front, strategically placed to catch the eyes of passersby and she found herself caught in the allure of it all. The shop keeper looked at the girl in the hospital gown with contempt, he raised his hand and shooed the poor thing away, "If you're not going to buy anything please move, you're blocking the clothing, and that's bad for business." the man preached. Francis sucked in her mouth and looked glumly at the man, she lacked any funds to get anything at that point and it frustrated her, she was far to slow to snatch a shirt and run, she knew she would be caught. She held her head in defeat and slowly slunk out of the way of the pile of clothing. "Thank you have a good day." the man said with a sarcastic smile. Francis sat down in front of the small stall and brought her head down to her knees, she assumed a semi fetal position and dwelt on the severity of her financial state. She griped at her poor fate, and wondered how she could change it, she was certain she could not, she would be eternally condemned to a state of squalor. "I'm so poor, I can't afford a floor." she said in a Socrates-like manner. She looked up and looked at the few people passing by, perhaps if she begged she could get a jewel or two to buy herself a shirt. She raised her hand up to a man passing by and asked in the most defeated of tones, "Can you spare a jewel?" |

Max took a look at the girl. Her dirty hospital gown made him sad, but he didn't want to draw unneed attention to himself. He watched her beg softly as he continued into the market. The market was bustling about and there were people gathered all around. He bought two meat pies from one of the stalls and continued scouring the market. There were a lot of "tourists" as freely buying goods and food, but nobody that looked like an easy mark. Max sighed and walked back towards the inn he was staying at. As he passed the pottery, he noticed the little girl still begging for money. "Psst," he hissed at her as he tossed the bag of pies to her feet. He didn't feel as hungry as she looked and he was trying to seem like a local. He remembered the story of how his parents met and his mother had always encouraged him to be kind to those less fortunate. Of course, this was before he found out about his father's past and his father's domination of his mother. "Perhaps I'm going about this the wrong way," he thought to himself as he continued to stroll. He briefly looked over his shoulder and saw a small train of hungry faces looking up at him. "Oh well," he thought. Max went over to one of the fruit stalls he was passing and bought a dozen apples. He then ducked into an alley and ran off hoping to lose the urchins following him. He zigged and zagged from alley to alley and after a bit, the children disappeared. He ducked into a local pub and sat down on the stool. A burly man behind the counter came up to him. "What'll it be?" the man gruffly asked. Max looked at the man. He had long black hair tied into a ponytail and a couple of tattoos and scars on his arms. "An ale, please," Max replied. " So what's going around town?" "Not much," The bartender replied. "Rumor has it that the local orphanage let out a lot of kids onto the streets. They can't afford to feed them all." "So that's why I had followers today." Max paid for his drink and tipped the bartender a few extra jewels. "Any news on the auction?" Max asked softly. The bartender looked around and then spoke softly back. "It starts in two days. I heard there's going to be a lot of art and crafts trading hands. Word around town is there's a big secret event by invitation only." "Thanks for the info," Max stated as he tossed the man 50 jewels. "if you hear anything, let me know." Max quaffed his ale and walked out of the pub. |

Francis laid in a slump with a defeated look on her face, she looked up longingly at the passersby, but most of them did their best to ignore her. "Can you spare a jewel?" the little girl parroted in a low broken tone. Within minutes of begging the girl had gained nothing but a bag thrown at her. She was far too slow to react accordingly, and didn't even get out a "thank you." before the man walked away. Francis opened the baggie she had been given and salivated at the aroma of fresh food. She was not unfamiliar dumpster diving and uneaten food was a delicacy, she pulled out the small round sauce of meat surrounded by a small tin. She dug her finger into the crust, it burned she withdrew and licked at the sauce on her fingertips. The little beggar was focused on her pies and didn't notice the two crudely dressed children who were walking up to her. "Are you going to share that pie?" one of the paupers asked as they approached her from both sides. Francis's eyes raised from her pie to the face of the scrappy young lad. Her heart pounded against her chest and her breathing became heavy. She took one gulp and shifted her gaze to the other boy beside her. His neck craned down and he glared at her with the same intensity that the other boy had. "Ye..yea." the little girl said in a defeated tone as she offered up her pie. The boy to her right smiled and took her pie, "Look Luke we got food." he said in a cheery tone as he sat down beside the girl and pulled off a piece of the pie and shoveled it into his mouth. His face clenched tightly and his adams apple dropped down. He swallowed forcing a lump down his throat, "hot hot hot" he moaned. The pie passed in front of Francis and she frowned, she said nothing as the two boys ate it, they dug their grubby grime covered fingers into the tin and quickly devoured the saucer leaving only a small bit for the girl. "Eat up." the one on her left said with a smile. Francis took the piece she had been left and bit it, it didn't taste as good as she expected now that it had been tainted by thievery. She cursed the two internally wishing them the worst of stomach cramps. |

Max strolled back towards the inn he was staying at. On the way there, he stopped by a cartographer. The bell rang as he entered the shop. "Good evening, sir," he shopkeeper greeted warmly. Max was used to this; people always treated people whom that think have money with a level of reverence. "How may I be of assistance?" "Good evening, my good man," Aerey responded. "I am relatively new in town, but i find the town rather charming. I was wondering if you had a map of the town as well as the surrounding countryside." "Well, there aren't that many areas of surrounding countryside, but I do have a town map. If you would like to commision a map, I could have one made for you in a couple days for about 10,000 Jewels. If I were to make it faster, the cost would go up to 50,000 Jewels." "Hmm..." Max pondered his next move. He needed to save money for the auction, but he wanted that map as well. "I'll have to pass for right now, but when I have the funds, I will return. How much for the town map?" "A town map? You can have it. It was made for a scavenger hunt and the men that placed them never picked them up. I got paid so it's their loss." "Thank you." Max studied he map and planned a path to the inn. He then placed the map in his pocket and waled out the door. "Have a nice day," he heard the man shout as he left. Max walked the path he had chosen. It went past parks and fountains and ended near the market where he bought the pies. every so often he would see dirty children begging for money or food. "There needs to be a way to feed all of these people," he thought. He looked over and saw a beautiful young lady sitting on a bench and feeding pigeons in the park. "Good day, miss," Max greeted. The lady was dressed in a white sundress with a big white hat and looked almost angelic if it were not for the bandages on her face. "Good day, sir," she replied without looking up. While the two conversed she never stopped spreading seeds nor did she ever look up. They talked about the train and the Orphanage, but they never spoke of an introduction nor gave thier names. Max discovered that the benefactor of the Orphanage had died and a few of his children were squabbling over thier inheritance and it had been going on for months. "Have a great day," he said as they finished their conversation. He then stood up and walked away leaving her to feed the birds. |

Francis partners in dining did not see reason to leave the haunt making the little girl anxious. She knew they would soon spot the bag she had and would probably rob her of her only remaining pie. She had to think of a way to get rid of the children quick, but she was at a loss as to how to go about it. The two sat in the manner of a professional young urchin, their eyes were big, and their hands stretched out to passersby, "I'm so hungry." the children griped. Francis remained silent. She slid out from between the children and slowly grasped at her bag as she got up. "Thanks for the food." the boy said smugly as she walked away carrying her satchel. The clothes she had wanted were not worth losing a meal over. Francis found herself in the market district, and walked down the blocks ogling all the wares the traders had to offer, but her window shopping would be only that as she remained jeweless. As she walked on she noted that the boys she had run into were not the only urchins pestering the town for a jewel or some food. She quickly discovered that her begging would not result in much gain, as every other block seemed occupied by a team of children. She walked slowly at her zombie like pace away from the hustle and bustle of the vendors venue, each new building a palace in her eyes, as she remembered the barren shanty she used to call her dwelling. There was no joy in passing by all the things she couldn't own so she decided to walk blindly and closed her eyes. "Oomph" the little girl exclaimed. Not ten steps in she had already bumped into someone, she opened her eyes and stared at the man with her standard frown. "Watch where you're going alright little lady?" the man said as he smiled at her. Francis only grunted not lead on by the man's smile. "Okay." she said as she closed her eyes once more and began shuffling about. Her hospital gown swayed slightly as she soldiered on with the dark as her guide. She heard cooing in the distance, the consistent call of birds made her feel oddly comfortable. "Please don'-" a woman said in a soft voice as she stepped toward a school of birds and quickly caused them to scatter. Francis opened her eyes at the sound of fluttering wings and looked to see a woman with an unhappy expression on her face, and bread crumbs at her feet. The little girl squatted down and quickly popped a piece of bread into her mouth. |

Max strolled away from the park with a larger understanding of the situation. In order to make things run smoothly, he needed to resolve the family conflict. Of course, this meant pulling attention to himself....or a faceman. This was starting to hatch tendrils in Max's mind. Max knew what he wanted to do, but now was the problem of how to achieve it. He knew he could hire some thugs to roughen up the family, but that would create more problems than create. Then a light went off in his head. What he needed was an accomplice. He needed somebody who would not raise alarms. As Max thought, he strolled back to the market. When he got there, it struck him: the little girl! Max briskly walked back to where he had last scene the girl, but she was not there. He asked around and was directed to another park. Knowing where to go, he hustled to the park before she ran off again. Max turned the corner near the park to see a flock of pigeons fly off. They had bee startled by something. That is when he saw her. She was kneeling on the ground, stealing a scrap of bread from a pigeon. Above her was a lady, who seemed very cross. Max rushed over to the girl. "Oh there you are, my darling," he called out. The lady turned and looked at him crossly. "Is this...creature...yours?" she demanded. "Well, not as of yet," replied Max. "but I do have need of her. Let me take her away so you can get back to peacfully feeding the birds. A thousand appologies for the interruption." Max tipped his imaginary hat at the lady and grabbed the girl by the arm and dragged her a few feet away. "Well young lady, what do you have to say for yourself?" Max asked the little girl loud enough for the lady to overhear. |

Francis turned toward the woman with dismay, had she been called a creature? She hadn't quite come across a town like her hometown, but she was certain that such a woman would fit right in if she were to visit. She felt rather awkward being addressed as darling, or anything sweet for that matter. Her father had never called her anything nice in her entire life, which made a stranger saying it not just odd, but creepy. She looked at the meat pie man who had been nice enough to give her a sack of food and wondered what his agenda was. Was he expecting her to come along because he had given her food? She had considered him a sucker for giving her something for free, but she realized now that he had expected a favor and indeed wanted reciprocation. "Hey meat pie man, I didn't even eat your meat pie so here." she said as she shoved the sack toward the man and scooped up another piece of bread and popped it into her mouth. She looked at the woman with a scrunched facial expression and stuck out her tongue with the partially chewed remains of discarded bread. |

Max was taken back by her rudeness. There were plenty of more gracious children who would gladly at least listen before being outright rude. He grabbed her arm and dragged her over to one side. "Now listen, you ungrateful little snot. I'm trying to help you out, but if you prefer, I can call the guards and have you arrested for theft. Would you like that? A measly little thing like you? and to think I was going to buy you a dress." Max released the girl and turned his head in disgust. He looked for one of the other children nearby. "I guess manners is something that don't teach around here," Max huffed as he walked down the street. Max walked off briskly and rounded the corner. He kept an eye and ear out for the girl, but he wasn't expecting her to follow him. "There are plenty of kids around here that would be happy to make a wage," he muttered. He leaned against the building and watched the lady in the park. He wondered if she was going to call the guards. He also hoped that he scared the little girl straight. Max thought about his own upbringing and Sister Magaret was a mean one with a fist of iron. She had broken more than one yardstick across his backside. Perhaps that's what was needed here...discipline. |

Francis cringed, could she be arrested for eating bread on the street? Was this town that strict? The possibility of being jailed for something so trivial irked her, her face scrunched into a tight frown, as she was further informed that she would not be receiving more free things, perhaps she had been to rash in her assumption that the man was not a sucker, perhaps he was a "nice guy." The man had been nice enough to drag her away before she could face the wrath of the bread throwing woman, but as he departed Francis was left with a dilemma, could she risk going back there to recover the meat pie and potentially get arrested, or did she follow after the man who may or may not be a sucker. Her frown grew wider. She turned her head toward the woman and the bag and sighed. She sprinted back as fast as her slow feet could take her and scooped up the bag before she rushed after the man, "Hey hey wait wait!" she shouted in her extremely morbid tone. Despite her enthusiasm her voice did not seem to accurately portray it. "I'm sorry" she said apathetically as the meat-sack jiggled behind her. |
