The group had now left the forge and were headed towards the town cemetery. Clear was still deep in thought about the whole thing. He knew there was something missing, some detail that evaded him, but the more he thought about it, the less sense it made. Deciding to talk with the others in case they had some insight on the whole matter, Clear turned around to face San and Kaelian. "This whole situation probably doesn't make much sense to you two, so I will explain this as best as I can. It is a fact that I have forgotten my mother's name, something that shouldn't have happened no matter what. And her death, it somehow doesn't feel right. As far as I can remember my mother wasn't the sickly type, she was always energetic and didn't get tired easily. But here's the most curious part of all: this didn't start seeming strange until just recently. I don't know what happened, but I started growing suspicious about this a few days ago, until I decided to come investigate the maters personally. I had the feeling that coming to this town in person would help me remember things, but so far nothing. If you have any ideas on what might be the case here, don't hesitate to tell me. I won't feel insulted no matter what you suggest." he said to his party, hoping that they would have better ideas than him. The town was no different than what Clear remembered. The amount of people on the streets felt normal, interactions between the people held nothing suspicious in them, the buildings were the same, overall nothing weird was going on. Whatever it was that was going on, it had only affected Clear's mother. As far as he could tell, it was as if she never existed, yet he was certain she did. If she wasn't real then where did he get this cloak with his initials sewn underneath its fabric? And the blacksmith still remembered his mother, he just forgot her name. But why her name? What was so important about her name that this strange incident had everyone forget about it? "How could I have just forgotten her name? There were thousands of occasions in which I used it, thousands of times in which I heard people call her that yet why, why?" he kept thinking as the group approached the cemetery with every step. Clear had an eerie feeling, there had to be something more than that, this couldn't be a random incident, someone had to be behind it. Someone or something caused this and Clear wouldn't stop until he had found out what. Living his life quietly while forgetting about a major part of his past was not something that would let him rest. His mother was his only relative he knew of, he couldn't abandon his memories with her. |

Continuing on their path, San grunted in disapproval at Kaelian's thoughts. "There are lies, there is deception, there are beings who can change thoughts and shift the past, there are ones who have power over the mind so greatly that they can wipe one's identity away with a single word - but no," he responded, shaking his head thoughtfully. "Your suspicions are delusional. The only manner in which such a situation is possible..." he paused for a moment, thinking. "What do you people call it? Brain-drying? Something along those lines." He continued, shrugging. "Either way, implanting thoughts into minds is a difficult thing; I knew of a magi who dealt with mental abilities once, and even he, skilled and wizened, had difficulty entirely implanting thoughts. No, the mind is too complex; I doubt even magic understands how to affect the mind fully." Kuilei, of course, had no idea what San was talking about; his own mind was filled with images of everything he could have assimilated into himself while back at the forge. Thus, his surprise when Kaelian suddenly latched onto him, causing the golem to freeze for several moments. "Eh? You're...not as heavy as I imagined," the golem abruptly stated, uncertain of what to do in such a situation; San, in the front, merely turned his head to give a short glance before continuing. As such, the undead mage didn't notice the solar mage's words, or Kuilei's reply. "My eyes aren't the best, but I'll try to do what I can," the golem said, immediately going on alert mode; his head turned every few seconds, the vacant mask of a head trying to absorb every movement in the vicinity. San was obviously more focused on what Clear had to say. "Do you recall where or what the tombstone looks like? There is no purpose in visiting a graveyard for a forgotten grave, you would do better off with visiting better-remembered places," San mused, stroking his chin with one hand. "On the other hand, foul play can never be ruled out. Are you aware of any other figure in your history, who may have had any form of a relation with your mother, and had either influence as power, a mass of money, or perhaps - magic? Hypnosis, sleep magic, mind magic, and the like tend to be popular amongst the lowest of factions." San looked ahead, staring at the cemetery; for some reason, the sight of it gave him chills. I will soon be walking on plots of land which I am supposed to already be buried under, he grimly thought. The closer he got to the graveyard, though, the more agitated he felt - it wasn't him. The sprites within the undead mage's body were screeching, and he knew not why. |

Kaelian frowned, pouted with pursed lips like a kid as San had ruled off his conspiracy theory, though Kuilei was a bit warmer and a good watchdog when he had jumped and took a short ride on the golem’s back. Though the moment he got off and looked at the golem who looked from side to side with scrutiny, he wondered if it was a good idea to give the golem a head’s up because now he looked more obvious that he was watching out for something within the vicinity. Wouldn’t that make things more obvious? Oh well, he shrugged as he continued with their walk until Clear started to speak, realizing that the other was feeling a little lost and quite frankly, surprised that Clear would even ask for help. But San was first to answer, with his own theories. “Well, if you ask me, I still stand with what I told San,” Kaelian said so idly as his eyes looked about the gravestone that seemed to have mushroomed all around the cemetery. “One of my theories is that everything is all a lie.” He said with a carefree tone that it almost seemed like a joke before he turned to look at Clear, “You know, that your memories, everyone’s, are all just some trick. Like a mastermind has decided to play around, picking you as the center, then deciding that everything should be just as the story he wrote it. Like a real-life stage play. So, the question should be… who can you trust? What is real?” It was creepy how he could easily say it with a straight face let alone looking back to the graveyard without a sense of dread. This was another side of him, the workings of his clutch personae but more subtle than before. He whistled a tune for a moment and hummed a bit before the lyrics escaped his mouth like a soft whisper, “Don’t worry, child, everything will end. After all, everything is just a lie. And so are you~” No, it wasn’t a taunt, just a song he remembered and aptly appropriate for his case. But he wondered if it was the same thing for Clear. Certainly, the other had other grips to what reality could be. |

"Don't worry about the tombstone, that's the one thing I do remember with certainty. Its precise location hasn't escaped my memories. And we could always visit my old home, I just think it should wait for after we check the grave." Clear replied to San's words and started thinking about the next thing he said. A person with great power? There was nobody as far as Clear could remember. "I don't remember any such person and frankly, I doubt my mother would have anything to do with such a person. She was just the bookstore owner of this town, we lived here peacefully." Kaelian's opinion on the matter was unsettling, but Clear was pretty certain there was no basis for what he had just said. "Well, you are entitled to your opinion but I will have to disagree with you completely. It cannot all be a lie, that's just not possible. And it's not like I don't have evidence that my mother ever existed, this cloak is proof of that. There are just some details I feel are missing. I could be wrong about the entire matter, but if so I will lose nothing by investigating it." Clear responded to Kaelian's outrageous suggestion as calmly as he could. After all the talking the group had finally arrived at the graveyard. There was no other person in sight, not that Clear expected it to be any different. Most of the tombs were in pretty bad shape, with the exception of a few that seemed well-tended. Clear looked around the place and spotted the grave they were looking for, his mother's grave. As soon as he did, he ran towards it with anticipation. He had finally arrived at his target, the place that was likely to answer all of his questions. Yet as he looked at the tomb, there was only the last name 'Crystal' engraved on it. Where her name should have been, there were obvious marks that someone had erased it. "Dammit!" he shouted and hit his arm on the gravestone. All this walk had been for nothing, there was no clue about her in this place either. But as the initial wave of frustration passed, Clear noticed something about the grave. It was in good shape, evidence that someone had been taking care of it. There were even some flowers on it that hadn't been left there too long ago. There was someone else that remembered her, someone that even came to visit her grave. But who? |

"Kaelian...you are starting to sound like one of those lacrima movie commercial things they play around sometimes in the local inns," San duly noted, as one of his arms swung behind his back to grab ahold of his over sized sword. "I am half expecting you to start announcing the name of some horror-based lacrima movie any moment now." Regardless of his words, San still felt tense; the sprites inside of him were warning him, of sometihng, but he couldn't tell what it was exactly. Cautious, the undead mage's head turned rapidly as he looked at the tombstones around them, following Clear's path the whole while. When he finally looked upon Clear's mother's grave, he froze - and the sprites within his body screamed. Near him, the golem who was also watching also stopped all of his movements, and their thoughts became identical. The tombstone... "S-Someone...damaged it." Both man and golem fell silent; theirs was a feeling that they could not express to Clear or to Kaelian. Where they came from, ancestry, and by extension, tombs, were sacred - a gravedigger was dealt with worse than even a murderer. Simply staring upon the tomb, with the scratches on the first name, gave them chills that were more powerful than any emotion either being had experienced in - well, in several decades. For a while, they both merely stood and stared silently. "..." After a while, San sighed, a failed attempt to speak, though the words gradually began to exit his mouth. "I see how it is. Foul play." His voice whispered, himself still gazing at the tombstone. Suddenly, his voice twisted, as if a thousand beings were trying to speak through one man's mouth. "We cannot forgive," the sounds rang, before San suddenly began coughing, falling to his knees. "M-Master San!" Kuilei called out, rushing to the undead mage's side. "A-Are you all right?" By the time the golem's arms held onto San, holding him up, the undead mage's voice seemed to have undergone a bit of a transformation. "Look around yourself, Clear," The undead mage quietly said, his voice still utterly inhuman. "There is more - there must be more than you see." The golem, on the other hand, was at the moment more concerned with his master's status. "San? Are you all right? You- You sound like..." |

Kaelian nodded in response to Clear’s explanation that he could well just be overdoing it, melodramatically, in fact, if he was now starting to talk like some narrator of a scary television series. Even San seemed to agree with the thought and poked fun at him at how he was now waiting for Kaelian to suddenly break out with a good commercial of when the next horror lacryma movie would be out in publich lacryma theaters. How annoying – he thought, sulking and crouching in front of an unknown gravestone as he poked at its rusted surface like some dejected kid, for in reality, he was, since both just thought of his idea as completely ridiculous. Then again, maybe the idea of such a conspiracy only applies for him and no one else. “Meanies~” he muttered as he continued to clean the top of the random gravestone of its rust. By then, Clear and San had made it across the graveyard and somehow found the one, only to be disappointed about something. From afar, Kaelian only spared a glance but he figured as he observed their expressions – at least, he could tell the expression from Clear as San was rather, emotionless – that something was not right. He sighed, shrugged even, as he straightened himself, already thinking of what to say in case Clear was going to be deeply troubled by something unexpected. However, just as he took his first step towards the others who were quite up front, San suddenly came down, kneeling and perturbed. Even Kuilei was surprised which made Kaelian rush towards the rest, worried that something had happened their undead father… err… friend. “Old Man San!” he called out as he rushed, “Are you all right? Did something happen, Clear? I told you there’s something wro-!!” and he fell, crashed to the ground and rolled and tumbled until his hit Kuilei’s solid butt by the head and fell back to the ground again, squirming and shaking from the sudden pain like a complete fool. “Damn it! Damn it! That hurts! Kui’s butt hurts!” he clamored before looking back to the path with a few tears being held back and a reddish face that screamed pain. And he saw it, a large root was on the path, but it squirmed and then retreated to the side, disappearing from view. “What the?!! Did you see that?” He said, pointing to the non-existent cause of his fall. Then again, now that he thought back into it, there was no way a root would move on its own. Even as he stood up and walked back a little, there was no sign of it at all. He could just be imagining everything and just so happened to have slipped and tumbled on his own recklessness. “Nevermind…” he finally shrugged, giving up on the thought, figuring he was caught up in his horror-drama setting he placed earlier and went back to where San and Clear were. And as soon as he arrived, he saw the object of their distress, a gravestone with just the last name as far as he could tell. Though there was evidence that it was vandalized, the missing first name and the presence of flowers? How strange indeed, for everyone in town had forgotten the woman, someone would still bring flowers to her and care for the tombstone. He patted Clear, “Don’t worry, it’s not over yet.” He then turned to San, “Hey Old Man San, don’t talk like that. You’re giving me the jeebees~ And it takes a lot to scare a god.” Edited by Sinjin, Sep 5 2012, 09:01 AM.

Upon seeing the tombstone San collapsed to the ground. Clear had no idea how to react to that, nor did he know what could have caused it. Did it have anything to do with San's undead status? Or was there really something more to the grave than the naked eye could see? Clear examined the gravestone closely, touching the damaged part where his mother's name should have been, but there was nothing. The stone was simply damaged, the piece of it that had the name written on it forcibly removed. There weren't signs of magic or anything like that there, it had simply been broken through physical means. "I'm sorry San but I don't see anything else. It looks like someone just broke the stone on this. The part where the name should have been is just... gone." Clear said dejectedly. There was nothing else on that grave, nothing except for the flowers on top of it. Clear picked them up and took a closer look at them. They were just common flowers people offer to graves, ones that represent condolences of some sort. Clear wasn't an expert in the language of the flowers or things like that, the only thing he could tell was that these flowers were about a week or so old. Putting the flowers back down on the grave, Clear wondered who it could have been. Who in this town knew his mother well enough that after ten years from her death there would be flowers there? This was a sign that someone regularly tended to the grave, it would be too much of a coincidence for Clear to return after so many years and some other person just happened to have visited a week before that. No, someone was coming regularly to this grave and took care of it, its condition was spotless. Clear thought about it but there was nobody like that, his mother didn't have any other relatives, at least none that Clear knew of. Yet he was unaware that his question was soon to be answered, as a man appeared next to him out of thin air. Both parties were shocked, to say the least, and Clear looked at the man dumbfounded. The same went for the man who looked at Clear with a questioning look, as if to say 'Who the hell are you?'. Clear had the same look in his eyes, and decided to be the first one to break the silence. "Who are you?" he asked the man straightforwardly. He didn't want to beat around the bush, this man looked like he knew something important. As if to return Clear's question, the man replied with the same words. "No, who are you? What business do you have with this grave? How did you know her? I've never seen you before here and I visit regularly. Although I was never too familiar with the people surrounding her since I never visited while she was still alive, you are a rather weird bunch to have good intentions. I will ask this again, what business do you have with River's grave?" River... that name hit Clear like a ton of bricks, could that be his mother's name? No, he was sure of it, after hearing the man say it he was completely certain that this was her name, as if remembering it after ten long years. "You, you knew my mother? Tell me, what else do you know?!" Clear shouted while grabbing the man from the shoulders. This man should know, this was the only thought in Clear's head. He knew her name, he also appeared to have known her since long ago, this man was certainly going to have all of the answers. Clear didn't consider for one second how this man's sudden appearance was suspicious, his timing too perfect to have been a coincidence. OOC

"Oh, sorry, Kaelian!" The golem called out, though he was still focused on helping San remain standing; from what he could feel, the undead mage's body had, to some degree, gone limp, and so the golem did not release his grasp. "Master San! Get a hold of yourself? What happened?" The golem asked worriedly, lightly shaking the man. As he was, San seemed to be more focused on something else, his voice still otherworldly. "Desecration. Unforgivable. We must lay the souls to rest before they haunt. Vandals need must take penance with their lives. No other way." His words sounded firm, but hollow - as if it were not he, but something else, speaking through him. Whatever else it was, it seemed to also have great influence on his body. When the strange figure appeared, a tall but otherwise ordinary-looking man with his face obscured by a hat, San unexpectedly broke free of his golem's grasp, leaping forwards towards the man in a most unusual manner. His sword was held forward as he jumped, though even Kuilei noticed the fact - He jumped...like a marionette. With several swift movements, the undead mage soon was within a meter's range of the man, his sword held out towards him. "You," his - or rather, not his - voice rang out, coldly. "Is it you, who desecrated the writings upon this sacred final resting place of a being?" Kuilei was obviously still worried, but the man's appearance and San's immediate hostility didn't help at all. As quickly as his limbering feet could, the golem rushed to San's side, arms out stretched and ready to take a blow for his master if he could. "Master San, C-Clear, calm down!" the golem urgently shouted. "It is not good to be possessed by your emotions-" he gave a particular gaze towards San - "-or anything else, especially at a time like this!" It would appear that San did not heed his golem's words though, as he moved not a single inch from his aggressive position, blade outstretched towards the man as if he was ready to charge and impale him at any moment. In fact, something strange was happening to San. As he stood there, motionless, sprites began to fly out of his body, from every possible opening in his clothes and himself. They made a sound not unlike multiple snakes hissing, as small dimly-glowing spheres began to dance around the undead mage, flying around him in formation as if serpents around their master. "Speak. Fast." |

Kaelian was surprised by the sudden appearance of the man. The same could be said for Clear and San, though Clear showed a little more surprise especially when the unknown man began to talk and even called out a name that he now placed on Clear’s mother. It really was suspicious to have a strange man suddenly appear and with the answer for their current question, though the intention of the man’s sudden appearance was highly doubtful as he appeared like he was able and capable of showing them a good fight. Kaelian could feel the stir in his blood and wondered if he could hold back or simply let loose like that first day in Tartaros. But before he could move, San had surprised them all when he took the initiative to raise his sword toward the unknown man. Grinning, Kaelian followed his lead, unsheathing his own sword, though unraised as he stepped sideways and positioned the sword by the floor, but if any expert were to appraise the stance, it was one that meant preparation and that any moment, Kaelian could spring to an attack or a defensive move, depending entirely on the opponent’s move – a.k.a. a defensive-counter type of stance. “I like your mood Old Man San. Though isn’t this more of my role and not yours to be picking up fights with someone so easily?” he tried to jest before turning his eyes back to the culprit of it all. “So, to whom do we all owe this surprise visit with?” he asked with a coy smile as he observed the latter. “It would appear as though you know the person who lays under that tomb and of whom should have been forgotten, as far I can understand the situation. So, how is it that you know her name when even Clear over here cannot? Unless, you’re the man behind all of this conspiracy and have joined forces with aliens to take over this kingdom!” And for some reason, his unreasonable and ridiculousness had invaded his train of thoughts and made him sound more like a joke than someone whom you should take seriously. Anyway, he too laughed at the thought of it before falling deadly serious, eyes sharp as knives and the grin gone, replaced by an unfeeling neutrality, “I’m rather keen to know how good you are. My godly arrogance is stirred beyond comfort. Shall we best each other and see who remains alive?” this time around, it was the godself in him that was talking and seemingly picking a fight with the unknown man, and all because his interest was piqued when the other had appeared without warning, somehow like teleportation or the sort. |

The man didn't look too pleased with the way he was being treated. Two of them were threatening him with swords, the third one had grabbed him by the shoulders asking questions. With no warning whatsoever, the man disappeared and instantly reappeared a few meters backwards. "You people, don't you know how to properly ask a question? You are the ones trespassing on my sister's grave yet you have the nerve to demand answers? But you young man, he pointed at Clear did you just call River your mother? Let me take a look at your face." he said. Clear couldn't calm down give the current situation, but Kuilei's words helped bring him back to his senses a bit. He took off his hood, revealing his face, and let the man take a good look at him. After a few seconds, the man's eyes grew wider with a slight shock displayed in them, as if he had just seen a ghost. "Well I'll be dammed, you look just like her. Young man, I can't be sure that you speak the truth yet, but somehow I have the feeling you're not. Fine then, I will answer all of your questions. If you are indeed River's son then you're my nephew, I have no reason to hide anything from you." The man took a deep breath to calm himself down completely, then looked back at the group with a serious face. "Listen well boy. They called you Clear? Anyway, what you remember of your mother's death is not true. But let's speak of the events in order, starting from when I first returned here as well. It was about eight years ago, if I recall correctly, that I returned here after being gone for a long time. I decided to pay a visit to my sister who lived here, but she had already passed away. No matter who I asked they all spoke of some kind of disease, but none knew of the details. This seemed suspicious, River was never one to get sick like that. So I decided to investigate the matter further. I soon reached a conclusion: everyone in this town had their memories tampered with, they all forgot her name and were made to think that her death was due to an illness. And there was never any mention of you, her son, in any of their stories, so I was unaware of your existence up till now." the man started explaining the truth about the events and all the while Clear listened closely. His words sounded truthful, there was no guile in his voice. "As to why exactly these events took place I do not know, but I have found out a few crucial things. First, the man who tampered with everyone's memories was a mage of Lamia Scale, he was also the one who desecrated the name on this grave. Second, he was following orders, from who or for what reason I cannot be certain. But after learning of the man's identity I stopped investigating. Call me a coward if you wish, but I do not wish to risk my life and meddle with such people. That man is dangerous, if you go after him there will be great risk for all of you. If you wish to know the rest I will tell you, but do not expect any more help from me, you'll be on your own after that." he finished. Clear took in all of the information the man gave them and started processing it. With no hesitation, he answered him. "Tell me the name of that man. It doesn't matter who he is, I will stop him myself and reach the bottom of this." he said determined. "But before that, answer me one thing, how did you know I was here?" "That's really simple boy, I put an enchantment on this grave. If anyone touched it, I would know. I might have decided to stop pursuing the culprit of River's death, but I would never let more harm befall her body." |
