Nick walked along the town road, taking in the cool atmosphere. The weather was pleasant, but he still wore his jacket for warmth. He looked around: "Oshibana Town..." It was his first time ever visiting Oshibana. It seemed okay enough, though for some reason the moon was already peeking its head over the town buildings, even though it wasn't that late in the evening. The whole scene seemed a little too eery. There was a full moon out, and the crisp night air nipped at his face. It reminded him of the night that he lost his parents...

Nick shook his head. He didn't know why his mind turned to that night. Maybe it was just the rumors of bandits and other unsavory types. Maybe Nick was just being paranoid. Either way, he didn't care to dwell on the subject too long.

Nick turned his attention to a tavern in front of him. On a large sign high above the second floor were the words:

Loaded Die Lodge

It had two saloon-style doors that swung when someone exited or entered, and inside Nick could hear the excited chatter of the patrons. Deciding it would be best to get out of the streets, Nick entered the old Inn. He stopped and looked around, surveying for a free table. Most were taken by groups playing cards or rolling dice, both the former and the latter stockpiling the table with alcohol. Nick saw one booth open in the corner, made his way over, and sat down. His eyes scanned the room once more, but this time his attention was caught by one group in particular.

At the table sat two men; the first, a noticeably sweaty man, his brown hair drooping down over his same-colored eyes, nervously fumbling around cards in his hand; the second, a rather short man, about 5'3", leaning back with his cards held down at his side as he smiled and puffed a ring of smoke from his cigar. Behind the second man stood three rather large and muscular goons, all wearing matching brown shorts and striped sleeve-less shirts. The first had a blue, with the second and third wearing red and purple, respectively. Before Nick could get a better look at them, a group of viewers seemed to materialize out of thin air, and was immediately surrounding the table.

Looking back at his own booth, Nick didin't have a chance to finish his next thought before a waitress spoke to him: "Would you like anything to drink sir?" She asked, her blonde hair in a ponytail and her blue eyes shining brightly. It was almost intimidating for Nick.

"A water will be fine, thank you."

The waitress walked away, and Nick, as he leaned his head on his hand, looked out the window, gazing at the bright full moon.

No one would have known that a week earlier Emily Winter was begging on a street corner from the way she swaggered down the road with one hand resting jauntily on the pommel of her black-bladed dagger dressed in a pair of brand new leather pants, a green silk shirt and her hair held in place by two finely crafted silver clips. All of this finery (and a purse full of money) were the result of some particularly rich thievery sessions in Acacia. Oshibana Town was a place where the pretty redhead didn't have a reputation and therefore she was safe to operate for a while.

Emily had heard that Oshibana was a good place to gamble and if one thing appealed to her it was taking risks with money she'd 'acquired' recently. Perhaps that was part of the reason she never managed to hold onto riches for long. She was too busy finding new ways to appease her thrill seeking nature. As she swung down another street the pretty crimson-haired girl heard the sounds of excited conversation and underneath it the muffled clatter of dice falling on a table and the soft 'shhh' of cards being shuffled.

The name of the establishment was the Loaded Die Lodge and it had the suitable air of seediness and danger about it. There wasn't an air of class about the establishment but a quick scan of the premises revealed a big spender with a trio of men who had no necks and broad chests guarding him.
Perfect the beautiful killer thought and scanned for a place to watch the action for a while.

There was one vacant space next to a rather decent looking young man who had just ordered from a perky blonde waitress. With a shrug Emily hopped into the booth and gave the youth a smile.

"Hey there! My name's Emily. I hope you don't mind if I join you...er....?"

She paused to give him a chance to respond while trying to get a read on what kind of personality he had and if he was exploitable.

As Nick's vacant eyes glazed over with boredom, his finger tapping slightly on his leg to no apparent rhythm, he was slightly surprised when a stranger took a seat across from him in the small booth against the far side of the establishment. While he had guessed that that seat was probably the last open seat in the entire room, he was still taken aback by the person that was now sitting directly in front of him in this confined space. The girl was close to half-a-foot shorter than Nick, and was slim too. She also had fiery red hair and pale, freckled skin. Nick wasn't sure which of these features stood out the most, but he did know that, when brought together in the form of the girl he was now staring at, they formed a unique and unforgettable face. Whether he liked it or not, her face was now committed to his mind. Though Nick didn't mind this at all.

"Hey there! My name's Emily. I hope you don't mind if I join you...er....?"

Nick blinked. It took him a few seconds to realize that, in the short time between when this girl had sat down and when she asked her question, he had spaced out. He thought quickly, going over in his head what the girl... er... Emily had just asked him. She bore a warm and cheery smile that seemed to just coax the words out of Nick.

"Er... yeah, that's fine. The seat's yours... Oh, and my name is Nick!"

Nick's gathered himself once more, taking a deep sigh to clear his head of distracted thoughts. Then he looked back at the girl, and smiled. Nick was just now meeting her for the first time, of course, but already he could tell somewhere in the back of his mind that she was a kind girl. Or at least, that's what he wanted to believe, and so he told himself this already established and self-determined "fact."

"So... Emily... what brings you to a town like Oshib-"

"Whoo! Yeaaaah! You sure showed him boss! Again! Again!

Before he could spit out the final word of the rather simple, yet somehow, in Nick's mind, carefully and well thought-out sentence, Nick was cut-off by the sound of intense yelling and admiration. Based on the pitch and lack of eloquence, it could be assumed that the noises had come from the three rather large and brutish goons that Nick had seen earlier standing behind the growth stunted card player. Nick sighed again, not bothering to look away at the commotion. Instead, he focused all of his attention on the delightful girl sitting in front of him. This time, however, he spoke faster and without pauses. It seemed that the loud and crowded atmosphere had actually helped him clear out his fumbling thoughts.

"So Emily, what brings you to a town like Oshibana? And even more so, to a place like this?"

Now that he did think of it, why was she in a seedy place like the Loaded Die Lodge? Nick had only come in because he needed a place to rest and to get his mind off of his parents. Nick thought it interesting to hear more from this Emily girl. At the same time, he noticed out of the corner of his eye the hushed awe of the crowd around the table making the commotion earlier. Though much of the bar was still talkative, the one table had an air of tension surrounding it. He also wondered where the waitress was with his water, and why it was taking so long.

There was openness to the blond boy’s face despite the attitude in his voice. Clearly he was putting on a front to impress the world and possibly her. It wouldn’t work on her but she didn’t need him to know that right now. A spunky grin came over her face as she leaned in closely to Nick while ignoring the commotion in the background generated by the screaming goon squad.

“I’m here to have some fun! I needed a bit of a vacation from my usual life. I’m here to gamble believe it or not! I’m not bad with cards y’know?”

The girl’s emerald green eyes scanned Nick’s fresh, youthful face and lingered on his own blue orbs before turning her attention to asking him a question that begged to be asked.

“I guess I should ask you what you’re doing here as well? I mean…you don’t exactly look like you fit in here either. A lad like you seems way too “wholesome” to be around gambling joints. So come on, spill…”

This open, lighthearted attitude was one that had worked for Emily in the past. She seemed to be flippant and energetic which often set young men like Nick at their ease. It was always fascinating to see how much she could get away with when it came to the manipulation of other people. Sometimes she played the innocent and sometimes the flirt. Like a chameleon she adapted to conditions and blended in to her surroundings.

The pretty redhead couldn’t help but notice the sudden stir of energy emanating from the gambling table and she wondered just exactly who the short man with his burly bodyguards was. There was danger just under the surface of this place that might erupt into action at any moment. Emily could feel the adrenalin beginning to seep like the world’s most addictive drug into her bloodstream.
