Fairy Tail Guild RP Current News

Hey everyone, it's me, your Lord and Savior, your Once and Future King, and your new Admin-for-Life Unlimit Sendo. I'm here to drop some turnbuckle-diving elbows and awesome news. There's been some relatively small updates to rulings regarding summon familiars and single summons. Additionally, there's also been a pretty big update in regards to the AP shop which reorganizes it and adds a ton of new stuff. You can find that in the AP Shop section under Item Creation. Check it out.

Welcome to the 21st Century, and to your left we have an exhibit of scientists in a lab cloning organisms, while walking further down the hall, to your right is an exhibit showcasing the processes behind the production of genetically-modified foods - the very foods that we eat today. Going further down the hall, we have the production of tryptophan over to your left - genetically-modified production of tryptophan had resulted in quite a number of casualties due to mistakes made during the production. And in the middle of the hall, we have a life-size replica of Little Boy, the atomic bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima in 1945.

Yes, this hall is about science and technology, and I would like to bring up a point for consideration to you all.

We, human beings, have reached a stage where scientific and technological progression has far outpaced our capacity for ethical, moral and philosophical growth. Is it time for us to keep scientific and technological progression in check, with ethical and moral discussions? Even then...

Should we?

I vote for none because you can't just heap science together in one bunch and say "This all needs regulations" or "This can all be allowed to run free". Most science should just be left alone, such as genetically modified food and other as good as harmless things such as that. These are mainly opposed by religious groups who think science is warping the work of god (which is nonsense in my opinion). Of course they need thorough testing, we can't have such incidents as that GM-tryptophan, but the regulations need to be kept at a minor level in the name of science.

Of course, there are parts of science that DO need regulations, such as atomic or other (semi-)biological weaponry. These effects are not limited to war time, they linger long after. Even now the effects of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima can still be felt in Japan. Cloning as well. IF we ever manage to clone a perfectly functional human, we should in no way be allowed to use them for spare organs, like some corporations would use them. (see The Island with Ewan McGregor) A.I. as well, we have all seen movies such as I Robot, or played Mass Effect and read about the Geth. Artificial Intelligence can, at one point, evolve to the point that they realize that humanity, or organic life in itself, is obsolete. Even if the chance isn't very large, even a 0.0000001% chance is too big.

So some parts of science do need regulations, and others do not. That is all.

While personally I can't vote either way, I have to point out that scientific advancements can't be made without sacrifice. When the Atom Bomb was dropped on Japan, scientist didn't know how it would effect the rest of the world, there was the fear that it could have burned up the atmosphere, killing everything on the planet. But in a war where the lives of people where on the line, the US saw that it was their only option to force Japan into surrender, and it did. But did the end result justify damaging a country for the next couple of decades? I can't speak one way or another since it was before my time. But I can say, that I don't really like the idea of the world that could have been if the US had lost the war.

Science has never been a cut, and dry field. There will always be moral choice that have to be made. They knew that the Atom Bomb would kill millions, and leave any who survived, damaged for life. But it was a decision that had to be made, and in my naïve mind I would like to think that the decision wasn't made casually. I would hope SOME thought was put into the idea of killing innocents, for a greater cause. But then you have to ask, to keep you're freedom what would you have done?

While the world we live in today is partly free of these types of war's (Save a few factions fighting for their independence) I can honestly say, while science walks a thin line as far as moral, and ethics goes. The advancement of the human race is a constant one. We as a people, regardless of race, gender, or religion. Seek a way to better ourselves and society. And while harsh realities have to be seen. Science is a needed venue for what needs to be done. To cure cancer would I test medicine on people to see its effects, knowing it could kill them? Yes, but it would only be with those who wish to test it, and I wouldn't do it casually. Science is an evolving mistress. And while I think scientist should be left alone to work, there should be an eye kept on them to make sure their work is for the betterment of our race as a whole.

Sometimes moral and ethic is in the way for progress and the future and when needed they have to be sacrificed for the future. So I vote no

Who you calling chocobo head...

I voted yes...with a but. The ethics we look for should not come from religion. So that's a no in most countries. >.>

Also despite voting yes, I don't agree with the sentiment that we've outpaced are capacity for ethical or moral growth. I just think maybe creating super bugs for giggles is a bad idea and might need some regulation. :P

Freedom to thsoe who don't have it its more valueable than gold but where should it start and end?

We humans often think we have the right to expand, absorb, convert or possess anything we need to reach our dreams. But time and time again hasn't this led to conflict with others essentially believe the same thing?

Only morality can become our saving grace, to keep your values in mind and knowing how your actions would effect others. You have to resist the urge to abuse power and resource simply to reach your goals more swifty. We must hang onto our humanity but the temptation to ignore it will always be there. It is that temptation that worries me. I am not afraid of the freedom, I'm afraid of the chaos that erupts when individuals having nothing but morality to constrain them.

We need to regulate enhancement technologies because power without limits, without guiderails to keep us from abusing can be a scary site. Absolute freedom is no better then absolute chaos. Society needs laws and regulations to protect it. Albert Einstein said "Technological progress is like an axe in the hands of a pathological criminal.". How often do we chase the dream of progress , only to see that dream pervered? More often than not, haven't the machines we built to improve life shattered the lives of millions? And now we want to turn that dream on ourselves, to fundementally improve who we are? Expereince has shown us how dangerous that can be. Technology offers us strength, strength enables dominace, and dominace pavs the way for abuse. Using technology to becoming something more than we are risks losing oru ability to love, aspire, or make moral choices the very things that make us human.

It also risk giving some men the power to make others what they choose regardless of the cost to human dignity. Every day we would try to become closer to becoming gods but we risk becoming like Icarus who tried to get closer to the sun when his wings melted. If we do not restain ourselves we risk to loose everything that we have gained.
