Another day, a new challenge. Larkin was ready to take on a tough job today, so after taking his breakfast, he started doing some push-ups and such. While it wasn't a very strong training session, it was a way for him to get mentally ready for what he would get through today. He had not taken a mission in a while, and he wanted to make some cash. Not only that, he felt he had been a B-Class mission for too long, so this was a way for him to get rid of one more B ranked job. However, he didn't want the usual dangerous-fight-monster-villain thing. No, he wanted something interesting, something that would be totally out of the ordinary. Thus, when he entered the guild and went directly to the Job Request Board, it took him at least fifteen minutes before he could get what he wanted. There were hunting monsters, teaching how to hunt such monsters, babysitting, garden-cleaning, package recuperating, sabotage and other things, but they didn't quite suit the mage's fancy. He needed something brand new, something that would come out of his comfort zone. Awkward and yet unique that's what he was looking fo- HA! I found it! Larkin exclaimed with a large roar of happiness, which prompted some of his fellow guildmates to look at him with laughs. The mage didn't care; he had found something interesting. Today was definitely not going to be like the others. After taking the paper, he went towards the counter, where Alayna was, cleaning the dishes. He waited for her to finish before presenting her the job. After reading it, she observed him, seemingly worried about something. She was about to protest when the front door opened. It was the Fairy Tail Master, Nathaniel Silver. He went to the counter, gave a bunch of documents to Alayna and took the job request. I hope he doesn't deny me taking it... It's not like I'm not able to accomplish it. He of all people should know that... Master Silver than started to laugh in his unique laugh and put his hand on Larkin's shoulder, which meant he approved. Alayna seemed a little disappointed, but nonetheless let the mage go. Seeing that the mission was taking place in Tully Village, the mage was kind of happy. That village was the perfect place to go to rest and go to other major towns. Since the distance between Tully Village and the other cities were exactly the same, Larkin could calculate approximately how much time it would take for him to get there and get back. He started to walk there, deciding that taking a long walk would help him think about what to do. This mission was particular, as the mage had to enter a person's troubling nightmares and defeat them, one by one. On top of that, he had to find the reason why he was having such dreams. Thus, Larkin not only had to fight/explore his way through the dreams, he had to find a correlation between them. Arriving in Tully Village, he went immediately to the address. He knocked three times, waiting for the young man named Casey Stark to appear. |

As Larkin knocked on the door, it swiftly opened, revealing a man who someone managed to look both like he hadn't gotten out of bed until five minutes ago, yet hadn't gotten much sleep - the look of the mentally desperate. "Are.....are you the mage?" His hair was sticking out at odd angles, green in color, and there were dark circles under his eyes - his endless dreams had been interrupting his sleep cycles on a crazy level. "Thank god! I worried no one had taken my offer on the mission board." He held the door open as Larkin stepped inside it, then shut it behind him. The house was a two story affair, fairly scarce, only the odd table or dresser to break up the emptiness of the room. Leading Larkin upstairs, he gestured to a pair of beds roughly 12 feet apart, with a small side table between them. Laying on the table was an amulet with a green jewel set in the center. "Alright, I managed to find an item to help out with this - I bought it off another mage, but didn't want to help me because he thought it too dangerous to go dreamwalking." Sighing, he held the amulet out to Larkin. "Put this on, and lay down in the bed opposite mine. Once you do, you'll instantly fall asleep thanks to the amulet's effect, but just a word of warning - I'll probably be somewhere in my dream, and I won't know what'll happen to you if I happen to, er....."Expire"....while in my own dream. Keep that in mind. And it has to be a stranger for this - anyone I actually know beforehand I'd probably think was just part of the dream. If you still want to help, just go to sleep in that bed." With that, he lay down in the bed opposite the one he'd pointed out. |

After arriving in Tully Village and finding the address, Larkin knocked three times on the door of the client's house. Waiting for a few minutes, he took a deep breath as the door opened. It revealed a young man who seemed sleepy yet someone who just got out of bed. It was a weird thing to see, yet Larkin understood. If what he read was true, then this guy has been in a in-the-middle state, which is... Well, very weird. in any case, the Fairy Tail mage was welcomed inside the man's house, so the mage did just that. The house wasn't all that impressive, even if it was bigger than Larkin's appartment. When I get enough money and can get more paying jobs... I'll get myself a house! The Fairy Tail mage was led upstairs into the young man's room. As he entered it, a thought came into the young man's house. This whole situation, if seen in another person's eyes, would lead to erroneous conclusions. The Fairy Tail mage sighed and listened to Casey Stark's explanations. Apparently, the young man had found some kind of amulet that would help with the mage's job of getting inside the kid's head. The mage wowed at the beauty and shininess of the object. Larkin took the amulet and put it around his neck and laid down on the other bed. The explanations about how the dreams worked and all that jazz really puzzled, yet excited Larkin. This mission was exactly what he needed. Some action and a little weird mojo to spice up the day. Looking at the amulet, he thought that possibly, the object would help him use his magical abilities in the dreams. Clenching his fists, he looked at Casey with a reassuring smile. If you still want to help, just go to sleep in that bed. Don't you worry, Casey! I'll get rid of those bad dreams for you! With this, Larkin looked at the ceiling and suddenly, his eyes felt very heavy. After a few seconds of battle, he let himself drift into sleep. Meanwhile, the amulet started to glow a bluish light... |

As Larkin woke up, he'd find himself in a devastated room, that looked like some kind of demonic bomb had gone off - furniture was scorched and cast about like some tornado had gone through. Books were blasted and blackened, tables were on their side, and a roasted wooden staircase led to a room below. The room itself was fairly small, maybe 18 feet across and 12 feet wide, with Casey standing there looking out of place, both in mind and body. There was an oddly-shaped door on one side of the room, small and squarish, looking more for shipping deliveries than persons. Larkin would be free to explore the house, with a few catches - all his items would be gone, including his weapons and clothing, save his boxers, which mercifully covered the essential parts. The necklace he donned before laying down would still be around his neck, but unable to be removed from his person. A small hat would be sitting on the only table unturned in the room, with a face, no less, peering at him as if he was some curious creature. "Not like him to have visitors," murmured the hat, as if he was alone in the room. "But I supposed he'd turn to help once things fell apart at this rate. Tell me, how did you end up in this place?" It took Larkin a while before he would actually wake up. After falling asleep, it happened once again. A journey to the dark side of his soul. However, when he entered it, it was different. It was more... illuminated. The dark side was shrinking down, which was probably a good thing. His darkness was not so pleased, however. Ever since the whole Amaymon business, Larkin has not felt his darkness rise as much as before. While this was well received by the Fairy Tail mage, this was still a little concerning. Nonetheless, after seeing him again and seeing how weak and utterly powerless he was against Larkin, the mage sighed. Sorry, but... I'm not letting you take control anymore. Closing his eyes, he reopened them, entering the center of the whole job. What the...? Larkin opened his eyes and the first thing he noticed... was his lack of clothes. He knew the exact feel of his black shirt, red leathe jacket and jeans, and this was certainly not it. While at first he was a little embarrassed, he remembered that he was in a dream. However, even if his clothes were away, his boxers were still on, and this made the mage laugh in delight. Casey, or whatever was making his dreams so wild, was very considerate. In any case, Larkin noticed that he couldn't take off the amulet. I guess it's because of it that I can stay here, huh... Looking around, he noticed a very weird thing. Well... it wasn't so weird since he lived in a world of magic, but still, it was the first time he had seen such a thing. It was a hat. But not just any hat, no, it was talking, like a human. And it had an attitude to boot. The mage approached as it "looked" at him with curiosity. If this thing was part of the whole dream, then it must know something about what was plaguing Casey. Before he could say or do anything though, the hat started to speak. Not like him to have visitors, but I supposed he'd turn to help once things fell apart at this rate. Tell me, how did you end up in this place? Well... Casey found this magic amulet that let's me enter his dreams... Anyways, my name's Larkin, and I need to find the source of those pretty vivid dreams of his. Do you know anything? |

"A magic amulet, you say?" The hat said, lifting itself off the table somehow - no visible means of support - and floated over, ghost-like, to peer at the amulet hanging around Larkin's neck. "Hmmm....this doesn't bode well at all. Well, regardless, it's nice to meet you, Mr. Larkin. I daresay you might as well give it a go at fixing him while you're here, but I warn you, it will not be an easy task." Floating back a pace or two and clearing his throat - or whatever substituted for a throat on a floating, talking hat - he said, "You see, that amulet is actually more sinister than young Mr. Casey gives credit. He bought it from a store designed to sell sleep-enhancing goods. While the mage's intentions were honest, his skill was not, and he misused the spell. Now when Casey sleeps, he remains a prisoner of his own dreams, unable to waken on cue. Four parts of his self were stripped from him and cast about in all the turmoil - his Patience, his Resolve, his Courage, and his Perception. He'll need all four essences of himself returned in order to be lucid enough to realize this is a dream - sort of - and awaken." The hat turned and floated toward the squarish door on the back wall. "This is the path leading to his lost Perception. If you wish to take the test, simply open the door and you'll find yourself in the test chamber. Another thing to note - that amulet will seal your magic while you're inside the dream. It's the reason no other mages would help - they got spooked when they didn't realize the amulet was absorbing their spellcasting." |

This mission was very different than anything Larkin had encountered, and it didn't even start for real. After waking up, Larkin found himself in Casey's room... which was much different than before. It was like a tornado had come right inside here and ransacked the place. However, there were three other reasons that led him to believe he was now in the client's dreams. One, he was practically naked, safe for his boxer. Two, the amulet just didn't want to get off his neck. Three... there was a talking hat in the room. While this wasn't all that surprising (after all, he lived in a magical world), it wasn't there when he came earlier. The hat proceeded to talk to the mage, and the mage proceeded to ask him whether he knew what he had to do. It turned out that it did. It told Larkin that the task of helping Casey wouldn't be an easy one at all. What happened was that fragments of the client's person had been scattered within the Dream Realm, and thus if they didn't come back to him, he would remain in the state of sleep/no-sleep he was in. The Fairy Tail mage whistled when he realized he would have to go get Casey's four essences. That's also when he learned that he would do all this without any magical powers. It's not that he couldn't live without his magical powers, but he didn't know what kind of enemies he would face. His Ex-quip magic was great as in the weapons he used could easily be used to match a certain situation. Oh well, if I can't do it that way, I'll just have to find some other way to deal with the upcoming problems... I'm ready to go do it, no problem there. The question is: do I get some of my magic as I get the essences? Or is it like... no magic for the rest of my time here? No matter what the answer was, Larkin took a deep breath and smiled at the hat. He then entered the first door, where the challenge to get Casey's "Perception" essence would commence... |

The hat nodded. "As you acquire essences, the amulet's hold may loosen, allowing you greater access to your magics, but don't expect them all to return at once when you retrieve the first essence." Stepping through the portal with Larkin - or floating through, rather - they emerged in a cavernous room with no end in sight, just a single, narrow, twisting pathway made of stone, with various contraptions arranged around it - it was obviously littered with traps. The door behind them had vanished. "A tricky test, but it suits the essence we're after - Perception. I'm guessing the key here is to note the trap before you spring them and avoid them. Or trip them on purpose if there's no way to avoid them." Floating over, he rested atop a dresser that was wooden and out of place in the stonework. "Put some clothes on - it's a bit chilly in here." Larkin would find a collection of suitable work clothes, though bland in color. "And you might want to investigate that pot." The pot in question was raised up on a pedestal before the start of the path, containing a single torch and a match. Most of the path was pitch-black, save for a few lit portions when the path split and formed a circle, then returned to being linear. A single light hovered at the end - no doubt the place of the essence. |

When Larkin asked his question to the hat, it somehow nodded and told the Fairy Tail mage that the amulet's hold on his magic might loosen if he collected the Essences of Casey. So with each one he got, he gained a new way to tackle the challenges. Still... This first one is called "Perception"... It won't be easy at all... The mage entered into the cavernous room along with the hat. Wait... How did the hat travel?! For now it wasn't important as there were many contraptions and traps all over the twisted pathway in front of him. Larkin looked at this with a puzzled eye until he finally saw the floating ball of light at the "end" of the pathway. Put some clothes on - it's a bit chilly in here. Larkin had totally forgotten he had no clothes, so when the hat told him, he looked at himself and laughed. He then went to get the bland clothes in order to do what he came here to do: help Casey. However, before he could run off doing something stupid, his attention was directed towards a pedestal. That pedestal had a pot which contained a torch and a single match. So if the torch is out, this is gonna be harder for me, huh... Taking the items, he then looked at the situation. There were many traps and the only way to get through them was to know which was which. The only idea that popped into Larkin's mind... was unorthody, but he didn't have a choice. Ripping out the sleeves of his new shirt and part of the pants legs. He rolled them up into four balls and placed them on the floor. Then, he lit the torch and set ablaze each one of them. He then kicked the first and second ball ahead, waiting to see what would happen. |

As the first rolled up cloth ball of fire went along the pathway, it bumped against a bit of raised stonework and tumbled off the side - a very, very long way down, getting smaller and smaller until the speck of light vanished entirely. "Erm.....I don't think I heard it hit bottom...." said the hat uneasily. "Might want to keep the torch handy. You might not be coming back if you misstep out there." As the second ball rolled, it bumped into a tripwire, and while not enough speed to snap it, the fire jumped to the wire, gnawing at it for a moment before it snapped and a heavy -chunk- was heard from over the ball, the ball's flame snuffing out a moment later as a heavy landslide of rocks, enough to fill a large car, poured from above, crushing the ball and most of it going over the side to join the first ball in the abyss, not making a sound either, save those that scraped the path as they slid away. "Well.....guess we know why you were given the torch, then, eh?" the hat said in what it hoped was a cheerful tone. |
