Having offered her guess, Ullara stepped towards Tsubasa as she watched Mervix returning from outside. Upon hearing her failed attempt to solve the riddle, he walked over to the faceless man with the invisible hat and held out his empty hand. "I think the answer is blue pigeon." he said to the strange proprietor, an answer that Ullara thought nowhere near rhymed with the word 'chest'. But the reaction of the faceless man behind the counter proved her wrong as he tilted its featureless head momentarily before turning to the brown chest bound with old iron behind. It all became clear to her when Mervix explained to them with a grin. Ah, random guess. How clever. she thought, slowly beginning to understand her aunts' love and appreciation for the value of books and learning. Still, Ullara never regretted her own disinterest for it afforded her time to hunt with the menfolk of her tribe. As the proprietor was pulled into the geometric maw of the chest by a giant purple tongue, the unassuming container turned into a wooden mockery of a poultry before Ullara's very eyes, complete with clicking wing-like appendages and clucks, leaving the trio facing the quandry of having to get it to lay the eggs contained within its box-like cavity. The young man with the fetching ear-piercings returned at that point with an impressive display of his knowledge in poultry husbandry and spoke with great confidence and knowledge. He informed them of the various conditions and requirements before getting himself stuck in with the task of turning the store into a makeshift coop, a suggestion that made most sense to Ullara. Where else but in a nest would a chicken lay its eggs. she thought approvingly and nodded slowly in agreement with the young man. Following the detailed instructions, Tsubasa offered a spell that could help turn the store dark, a revelation that made Ullara wondered if there was nothing this impressive man could not do. "Well, no such magic nor any I can offer that would help so nest building it is for me." Ullara volunteered before turning once more to Tsubasa, passing her staff to him. "Here, hold this while I help get the nest done." she not so much as asked but rather instructed Tsubasa, the possibility of an objection from the mage not even considered as she proceeded with the task at hand, completely unaware of Tsubasa's reaction. Ullara picked another part of the store where there were more farming tools and materials to rummage and gather materials for the nest building. Systematically removing them and piling onto the 'nest' that was beginning to take shape before her, she noted there were indeed fork handles and candles amongst the goods traded in this store. With the nest eventually completed, Ullara returned to Tsubasa and retrieved her weapon. "Thank you." she said to the mage without knowing how he felt about being used as a weapon stand before turning her attention back to their combined effort. Pleased with the result, she looked over to the young man with the fetching ear-piercings with a nod that said Well done and tapped the wooden box/chicken near her gently with the broad end of her staff, eliciting a hollow wooden sound and a strange annoyed cluck from the thing. "Wood chicken. Go." Ullara cooed, lightly prodding the thing in the direction of its new makeshift nest. Edited by Allura, Feb 13 2012, 09:32 PM.

Mervix watched, impressed as Shadiic took over, the familiarity in his speech and the comfort in which he seemed to be taking from an egg-laying confirmed Mervix's suspicions. I have dozens upon dozens of classes that Father puts me through and yet I don't even know how to make a chicken lay an egg. Absolutely appalling. Mervix watched as Shadiic took things from the store's shelves and made a makeshift nest for the odd little wooden chicken and Mervix went over what Shadiic had said was needed. "Nest. Darkness. A slow-growing light. I could do the curtains I guess." Mervix started to look around for thick pieces of cloth when Tsubasa spoke. "Good plan, I can use my shadow mist to create the darkness, since it emits a dark mist and all. But, unfortunately, I cannot create a light bright enough to awake it." "Perfect," Mervix grinned. "Now where are we going to find a slow growing light?" Mervix was hoping we wouldn't be left to deal with that and contribute to the nest making instead. "Well, no such magic nor any I can offer that would help so nest building it is for me." Ullara volunteered before turning once more to Tsubasa, passing her staff to him. "Here, hold this while I help get the nest done." Mervix sighed as Ullara got to work, rummaging through the store's materials and helping to finish the nest. Great...now what am I going to do for lighting? Oh wait...Shad said to look for a switch. Mervix glided from wall to wall, hoping to find a switch to the lights that were cheerily shining above. Finally after as much wall searching he could bear, he found a switch on the wall just behind the cashier, directly above where the chest was earlier. Mervix flipped the switch and the light instantly turned off, plunging the store into a state of semi-darkness, the only light was the dying light coming in from the windows. Mervix whistled."Ok...not good...we can't just turn this back on. It'll scare the living daylights out of that chicken." As if in agreement the chicken turned in his direction, turning it's box-like head to one side and clucking all the more. "Great...we're doomed," Mervix mused as Ullara tapped the wooden chest with the broad end of her staff. "Wood chicken. Go." Ullara cooed, lightly prodding the thing in the direction of its new makeshift nest. It clucked a little louder before making its way onto the wooden nest. A little unstable, it managed to move get into the center of its new nest. It shifted the things in the middle for a while, making a small indent in the middle before settling down on the pile of objects with a crash. "Come on...brain...think!" Mervix tapped at the sides of his head. "We're in the Mindscape. It's not a real world. So..." Mervix jumped to his feet, almost scaring the wooden chicken from its nest. "Of course!" He turned to the switch, holding it with his index finger and his thumb. "It's just like vivid dreaming. I should be able to do this." Imagining the lights he had back home, he twisted the switch to the left in a circular motion. Though it was stubborn at first, the switch eventually melted and turned into a dial of sorts, exploding with a burst of sparks and magical energy. "That was..." Mervix began before sinking to the floor, heaving. "...tiring...don't think I can work magic for a while..." He turned towards the three of them slowly. "Right...Shadiic if you could make sure everything's alright then we're good to go. Maybe get it to sleep. I heard some people sing them to sleep. Tsubasa can use his magic to darken the place once that's done and Lady Ullara...if you would be so kind as to turn the dial when it is dark enough? I don't think I'll be able to stand for a while." Shadiic started to laugh. Sing the chicken to sleep? Who the hell would think of something like that. Chicken's would be confused with the random unnatural noise of a human singing it a lullaby and it would be dangerous if the person who sang it was horrible. That would set off the chicken and drive it mad. He would swat anyone in the head if they attempted to sing. He looked over to the chicken who walked over to inspect the nest that they made for it. It seemed to like it and he turned over to the other guys and said Right it looks like we are going to go in a bit. If I hear anyone singing I'm going to punch you in the face for beings stupid. As soon as I give the signal, I want you Tsubasa to block out the light, but do it slowly so it seems like sunset. We will let the chicken calm down and relax and once its on the nest, Ullara can you slowly turn the light on. We will know when the chicken has laid the egg as it will start clucking and standing up to check it itself. So we are clear? Shadiic watched the chicken as it inspected the nest once more. It would slowly circle the nest and peck at it every so often to see how sturdy it was. It was eyeing it out slowly, but it seemed like it was content. It started to climb the nest and now it was getting comfortable. It finally found some good footing and then it sat down onto the nest. It was shaking it's butt around to move the things that they made the nest out of to become comfortable. It was happy with the nest so he looked over to Tsubasa and said It's time to begin. Tsu you are up. Edited by Yovel, Feb 14 2012, 05:06 AM.

"Here, hold this while I help get the nest done." Ullura went of to go find things for the nest, Merv looked like he was about to give up and Shad was hard in thought on how this was all going to work out, everyone seemed to be working on there own parts of this plan. "Ok...not good...we can't just turn this back on. It'll scare the living daylights out of that chicken. Great...we're doomed." Ullura seemed to be done with the nest alredy, "Wood chicken. It seems that the wooden chicken likes it new hame after all. "Come on...brain...think!" Mervix tapped at the sides of his head. "We're in the Mindscape. It's not a real world. So..." Mervix jumped to his feet, almost scaring the wooden chicken from its nest. "Of course!" It seems that Merv had a bright conclusion to all his hard thinking, "It's just like vivid dreaming. I should be able to do this." Tsu watched as he twisted the switch to the left in a circular motion. Though it was stubborn at first, the switch eventually melted and turned into a dial of sorts, exploding with a burst of sparks and magical energy. "That was..." Tsubasa can use his magic to darken the place once that's done and Lady Ullara...if you would be so kind as to turn the dial when it is dark enough? I don't think I'll be able to stand for a while." To sing the chicken to sleep... "That was quite an unusual idea and yet it coould work." "Right it looks like we are going to go in a bit. If I hear anyone singing I'm going to punch you in the face for beings stupid. As soon as I give the signal, I want you Tsubasa to block out the light, but do it slowly so it seems like sunset. We will know when the chicken has laid the egg as it will start clucking and standing up to check it itself. So we are clear?" Every one nodded, awaiting for the chicken to get ssetteled into it's new nest. It climbs in, rearranges some things and the sits on top. Shad looked up at Tsu, "It's time to begin. Tsu you are up." Tsu nodded and said "Shadow mist." A black haze then was released, covering the chicken in darkness. Everyone beening anxious to see what what will happen next. |

Ullara watched on as eldritch sparks flew about the switch under Mervix's hands as his magic willed it to change before her very eyes into a dial. The magic was clearly taxing on Mervix as he immediately sank onto the floor in exhaustion, visibly strained by this feat of unreality manipulation. When he suggested singing to the wooden poultry to get it to sleep, Ullara wondered if the songs her mother sang to get desert goats to yield their milk would work on wooden chicken. Her question was answered by the young man with the fetching ear-piercings who explained the counter-productivity of such measure, after having laughed a hearty laugh at the suggestion. Clearly an expert on such things, he went on to instruct the rest on their individual duty. Ullara nodded when tasked by the young man to turn the lights on and walked briskly over to where Mervix was resting. "I have this." she said to Mervix, indicating her readiness to step in and take over the dial. "To the left, yes?" she asked to make certain there would be no mistakes nor delay when it was her turn to do her part. As the four stood ready for their joint effort of getting the chest to surrender its contents, the collaborative spirit of the quartet reminded Ullara of the erections of yurts in the desert. It was a community effort that was celebrated with great fanfare and songs by all in her tribe, a joyous occasion as everyone set root near the oasis after months of moving through the sandy dunes of Sanzibar. Ullara reminded herself that on this occasion however the singing would not be welcomed having remembered the caution given by the young man with fetching ear-piercings. As she waited for Tsubasa cast his magic, the desert huntress could feel anticipation and excitement rising in her like the slow and soft introduction of a silent symphony. At the evocation of his Shadow Mist spell, Tsubasa released a black haze that shrouded the wooden thing in darkness. They all waited anxiously, all eyes fixed intently on the pseudo-bird that was once a chest. The thing settled in its nest, its faux-wings slowly relaxed around its side and flopped down gently with a tiny sound of wood clapping. Taking it as a sign that the wooden bird was finally relaxed, Ullara began to turn the dial slowly, her eyes all the while on the bird to make sure it remained calm and relaxed, her heart beating with great anticipation for what was about to be yielded. Mervix sighed as he watched his three companions go to work. It was nice to know he could count on them even if he had just met them. And under such strange circumstances as well. Mervix took slow breaths, waiting for his magical energy to recover, almost not noticing until Ullara stood right beside him. "I have this." she said to him. "To the left, yes?" Mervix nodded, grateful that the mage was taking things in stride. That reminds me. I'm owe her a round of drinks. Heck. I owe all of them a good dinner and a round of drinks if we get through this... Try as he might, Mervix could not silence the word "if" as it magnified and resounded in his head. Mervix tried to put it at the back of his mind. There wasn't time to focus on such things. They just needed to put one foot in front of the next and conquer each challenge as they came to it. But what about the third line of the riddle? We still have one riddle left to answer and we still don't know what it is. Mervix took a peek out the windows and judging from the fading light they only had an hour left before the sun went down. The fact that time flies here is another thing to worry about. There came a clucking sound and Mervix's attention was brought back to the chicken who seemed to be warming up to the light that Ullara was slowly turning brighter. It turned it's body this way and that and for a moment, Mervix thought that they had done something wrong. Then, the wooden "chicken" stood up and under it gleamed four white eggs, each the size of a man's fist, glittering as if it's surface was studded with diamonds. On further inspection, they were. The "chicken" continued to cluck, turning its head to the right and to the left as if in a gesture of thanks before settling on top of the eggs. It's wooden wings dropped off, clattering to its sides and it's lid sprung open, revealing the four eggs within, each settled on a bed of purple velvet. Mervix gingerly reached out, remembering what had happened to the shop keeper when he had approached it but nothing happened as he picked up an egg. It was warm to the touch and a little rough, jiggling ever so often as if the thing within were struggling to break free. He wrapped the egg with the "shadow-silk" and it stopped moving as if at peace. After a short pause, Mervix sighed, stroking the chest's lid fondly as a gesture of thanks. "I guess we'll have to go. I hate to say this but I think we're running out of time." The air outside the shop was getting colder and the sky had grown dark, lightning and rumblings of thunder on the horizon. An occasional gust of wind blew about them, sighing as it jabbed them with its chilling touch. The orange sun had almost reached the horizon. Mervix walked quickly as he paced the streets of the Market District. "Where is it? Where is it? Where?" Mervix muttered to himself. "What is the answer? How do we get fragrance from...from...a bed? A rarely used bed? Gods! I can't remember it. Darn darn darn it!" There were fewer "people" on the streets now and they walked about as if in haste or panic. Yet there was no answer in sight. Not at the milliners, tailor, cobbler, jeweler or any of the stalls that littered this District. Nothing seemed to make sense. There was no bed in sight. No... Mervix paused, his thoughts flashing with bits of insight. A bed... Where else would you find a bed except where there are houses? Excitement and energy springing into his footsteps, Mervix ran, beckoning to his three friends. "I think I know where the answer is!" Past the Market District, Mervix turned left and looked at the rows of houses that rose from the base of the hill all the way to the top. "Ok...the riddle said "bed". We should be able to find all kinds of beds here. But one that has been rarely used? Oh wait no..." Mervix's brows furrowed together as he tried to recall what the riddle said. "I think it's...used once...a bed used once...Let's see..." Mervix's foot tapped impatiently on the pavement, his eyes scanning the sky. A slow, sad song played; a set of bagpipes humming a dirge. Mervix looked up and saw a funeral procession walking towards them; a group of mourners with streaks of black ink running down their featureless faces, three musicians playing the bag pipe with mechanical precision and four pall bearers in their tuxedos bearing a black casket on their shoulders. "That's it!" Mervix cried, excitement bursting from his lips. "Thank the gods! A bed only slept once!" Mervix turned to his companions hoping they would understand his answer. "It's the coffin. The coffin's a bed only slept once because they bury you with it and you never leave it. The fragrance...fragrance... Flowers! The flowers they put onto the deceased before the close the casket! It must be the answer! It must be... Not waiting for a reply, Mervix ran up to the funeral procession and the pall bearers stopped, laying the casket on the ground as Mervix went up beside it. Energy bursting from his movements, Mervix lifted the coffin's lid and reached it before emerging with a rose in his hand, its petals a deep dark red. He waved it at them. "I found it!" Just as he said it, the rose's stem grew, wrapping itself around his arm and entrenching itself there with its roots and thorns. Crying in pain, Mervix collapsed as the coffin exploded and a 12 foot rose emerged, the middle of its blood-red petals opening to reveal a gargantuan eye dripping with blood and the smell of pungent decay. It gave off a shriek, the voice of a woman and that of a beast echoing along the streets as the faceless crowd just stood there, staring at it. The creature bent and turned it's eye to Mervix's companions. "Once kill him, kill you!" it roared. Rose Tower (Current Stamina: 15

The plan went without a hitch. The chicken had given us the egg and thus Shadiic followed the other three to the place where they were going to solve the riddle. They reached a place and then as Mervix solved the riddle. A giant rose tower formed and it seemed to be shouting at Mervix wanting to kill him. Shadiic was disturbed by the fact that the rose tower had a single eye in where the bud was and that unnerved him quite a bit. Since they were running out of time Shadiic went in for the kill and started to send a flurry of attacks that would atleast take a good chunk of it down. He ran up to the tower and with his weapon in his left hand, he impaled the rose tower's base with it. Gathering his strength, he ran around the rose tower causing it to spill sap everwhere. The blood spilled across the floor and Shadiic pulled out his weapon. He looked at the damage he did and noticed that it was too wide to make it fall down. He had impaled it about 4 inches deep all around and it was about 2 feet wide. So the base of the tower after Shadiic has sliced was about 16 inches wide now. Shadiic jumped back as he noticed that the rose tower's blood formed something as it grew from the ground. It grew bigger and in the end there was a barrier of rose blossoms. Dang it. He was so close. Either they would need to knock to rose tower over and cause to snap at its base from the pressure or start shredding it to pieces. Though shredding it to pieces would create more of those rose blossoms. Shadiic wondered if the rose tower would bend as much in fear of snapping? Or will it continue fighting oblivious to that concern? Shadiic did not care as he jumped back and aimed a spell at the rose tower. Divum Tentatio A bolt of magic came hurtling towards the rose tower. Shadiic aimed for it's eye and as the spell made contact, upon impact it caused a small explosion. The rose tower must have felt taht one as it was starting to move disorientated. |

A light started to rise slowly in the darkness, it was most certainly a beautiful sight to behold. This is it, we have our second item, but this still leaves one left to find. This final riddle was a real pain and it seemed that no one knew the answer, time was passing quickly. Mervix gingerly reached out, remembering what had happened to the shop keeper when he had approached it but nothing happened as he picked up an egg. He wrapped the egg with the "shadow-silk" and it stopped moving as if at peace. After a short pause, Mervix sighed, stroking the chest's lid fondly as a gesture of thanks. "I guess we'll have to go. I hate to say this but I think we're running out of time." It was true, time was wasted on getting the egg, as well as the fight against the shadow midgets. Everyone left the store on quest for the final piece. The air was outside was filled with anticipation, all they needed the was one clue to send them in the right direction. Fragrance by a bed only used once, Could it be a flower bed? Of Something similar? He thought. "I think I know where the answer is!", Tsu looked up, he wasn't to surprised. "Ok...the riddle said "bed". We should be able to find all kinds of beds here. But one that has been rarely used? Oh wait no..." Mervix's brows furrowed together as he tried to recall what the riddle said. "I think it's...used once...a bed used once...Let's see..." Mervix's foot tapped impatiently on the pavement. He seemed to be hard in thought "That's it!" Mervix cried, excitement bursting from his lips. "Thank the gods! A bed only slept once!" Mervix turned to us hoping we would understand his answer. "It's the coffin. The coffin's a bed only slept once because they bury you with it and you never leave it. The fragrance...fragrance... Flowers! The flowers they put onto the deceased before the close the casket! It must be the answer! It must be..." Tsu laughs again... "Of course it is. That is one smart man." Then A slow, sad song played; a set of bagpipes humming a dirge. Mervix looked up and saw a funeral procession walking towards them; a group of mourners with streaks of black ink running down their featureless faces, three musicians playing the bag pipe with mechanical precision and four pall bearers in their tuxedos bearing a black casket on their shoulders. It seems there was a funeral going around, "It seems that even those in a dreamscape can die." It was a deppresing sight, but with out any thought or warning, Mervix ran up to the funeral procession and the pall bearers stopped, laying the casket on the ground as Mervix went up beside it. Mervix lifted the coffin's lid and waved it at towards this direction. "I found it!" Then a giant 12ft rose grew from the casket, making it explode. "Holy son of Jenova..." Tsu wispered under his breath, then the middle of its blood-red petals opening to reveal a gargantuan eye dripping with blood and the smell of pungent decay. It gave off a shriek, the voice of a woman and that of a beast echoing along the streets as the faceless crowd just stood there, staring at it. The creature bent and turned it's eye towards the three near by. "Once kill him, kill you!" it roared. What did it mean him... Was it aiming for someone certain? It said him... So was it aiming to kill me or Shadiic? Tsu thought, he would much rather have him hurt, than to see some one else. "Divum Tentatio" Shad yelled, A bolt of magic came hurtling towards the rose tower. Shadiic aimed for it's eye and as the spell made contact, upon impact it caused a small explosion. The rose tower must have felt taht one as it was starting to move disorientated. Tsu then ran up to it, it was clear that it's eye was it's weak spot. So ran, dodgeing it's attacks, he yelled light arrows and shot them at his eye. It then started to flail from the pain fro mboth attacks. A stray vine goe's towards Merv and Tsu manages to dive in time to cover him, taking the straight hit onto his back. He screamed in pain, but at least he knew Merv would be safe. Edited by Giggles-mesh, Feb 17 2012, 11:23 AM.

As thunder roared in the distance, Ullara watched Mervix made his way towards the cortege of faceless mourners weeping ink, clearly confident of his answer to the last riddle. Watching on with curiosity, she wondered if the solution would produce yet another wondrous artifact such as the length of silk across her shoulder and the diamond encrusted egg now cradled safely in her garment. As the green-haired mage reached inside the coffin and pulled out a single blood red rose, Ullara nodded with approval at the beauteous thing. Her satisfaction was short-lived for as soon as Mervix held it up, the rose grew and snarled its thorny stem around his arm, causing him to cry out in great pain as an unnatural giant thing burst forth before them from within the coffin. "Abomination." Ullara uttered under her breath as a tower of rose emerged from the exploding coffin screaming wrathful with the ire of a beastly virago. "You are no honoured creature of Gaea's Kingdom." she cursed at the affront to all that was nature as scent of death assaulted her nose. Growling with indignation at this blasphemous mockery of her Goddess's grace, Ullara charged towards the rose tower with her weapon held out before her in both hands with a steely determination to eradicate this insult. First to reach its base, the young man with the fetching ear-piercings attempted to cut off the thick stem by slicing it open with the spikes on his knuckle duster, a valiant attempt that caused the stem to seep out blood which spilled onto the ground around it but failed to cut the creature down. As a barrier of rose blooms sprouted from where the sanguine liquid touched the ground, the young mage leapt back and cast a spell, summoning a light orb which struck the fetid monstrosity at its eye. Upon impact, the thing reeled back from the explosion disorientated, its scream a duet of beast and woman in pain. Noticing this weakness, Tsubasa followed up the assault on its cyclopean eye with twin arrows of light shooting out from his hand. The dual attack made the creature writhed in anger and pain, screaming ever louder as it flailed in agony. Seizing this moment, Ullara shifted her blunt staff onto her left hand and touched the peony shaped symbol on her tattooed left arm with the other, silently beseeching the aid of one of the Goddess's champions to lend her the strength. "Milady Paeonia, lend me your strength." Ullara uttered as she called forth one of Gaea's eminent female knight. At the Greens keeper's behest, an ornate metal-like stem sprung forth from her left scapula, a large man-sized bloom of dusty pink peony blossoming in full glory at the end with iridescence dancing at its core. The floral wing emerged like a flower growing in sped up time whilst a slender silver rapier with an ornate hilt inset with a blood red stone appeared in Ullara's empty right hand. Running towards the rose tower with the Wrath of Asclepius in her hand, the young huntress smiled as she felt the surge of enhanced strength and precision coursed through her veins, girdling her determination to complete what was started by the young man with the fetching ear-piercings. As she ran towards the base of the screaming tower, the monocular creature turned towards the young huntress with alert menace, aware of her intention to end its existence. Tipping forward, it sprayed blood towards the charging huntress. Having seen how it had turned into floral red blooms of roses previously, the decorated stem on her back bent forward like an extra limb, bringing the man-sized peony flower above her head to shield her from the rain of blood descending from the top of the rose tower. Upon contact with her floral appendage, the crimson droplets turned into Blood Blossoms, taking root where they came into contact with Paeonia's wing, clinging onto its surface in an embrace of blood red petals and thorns. A stray droplet fell onto Ullara's right arm, transforming into a single blood bloom that took root and ate into her flesh, causing Ullara to grimace in pain. Bearing through excruciating agony, she swung the single peony wing back forcefully and shook off the unwelcomed parasitic blooms from its canvas-like petals and metallic stem. Gritting her teeth through the pain, Ullara charged at the base of the shrieking tower and plunged the Wrath of Asclepius into where the young man with the fetching ear-piercings stopped slicing, the length of the rapier submerged half-way into the wound. With a loud yell, Ullara pushed the blade across the base with enhanced strength, fully intent on completing what her comrade had started. As the rapier emerged from the side, slicing the tower's stem clean, Ullara wedged one end of her staff into the gash and pushed the staff downwards with great force, prying the wound ever wider. --- Paeonia Edited by Allura, Feb 19 2012, 03:33 PM.

Mervix watched once again as his companions came to his aid, facing the titan rose without so much as a whimper. Wincing, Mervix watched as Shadiic attacked the monster with his knuckledusters, blood spraying in all directions, sprouting more of the monster's offspring. When that wasn't enough, Shadiic had thrown a globe of energy at the Tower's gargantuan eye. The shrieks of anger were enough to deafen Mervix if he had not been creeping away throughout the whole battle. Another stab of pain ran up Mervix’s arm, an arm that was slowly being devoured by the Rose Tower’s demonic offspring. Mervix tried to pull it off and the rose struggled against his strength, shrieking a little as its roots were being pulled out of his arm. Finally, after much tugging and perspiring, the little rose had been pulled out of his arm and Mervix tossed it as far as he could before it latched onto his other arm. Now then, let’s-, Mervix thought before something overshadowed him. He looked up to see Tsubasa leaning over him, pain clearly written on his face. Mervix stood up to support the man and as he did so saw a vine pulling back. Mervix lowered the man to the ground, hoping to avoid what pain he could inflict just by moving him. "I..." Mervix began, his words caught in his throat, unable to voice what his heart was feeling. He held back a stubborn tear as he watched the monster, flail about due to Ullara's unceasing attack. "...am going to prune that rose for you." The Rose Tower screeched in agony, it's blood petals quivering with fury and anguish. "Me kill you! Me kill all you!" The monster shrieked, tottering precariously as its stem began to be torn apart by its own weight, its monstrous head flailing about, spilling blood everywhere. “Me kill! Kill! Kill!” “The last thing you’ll be killing is yourself, you overgrown shrub,” Mervix whispered, his voice eerily calm. He walked up to the rose and the battered coffin beneath it, thunder rolling in the distance, a flash of lightning streaking through the sky. The Rose Tower turned its bleeding eye in his direction, screeching a challenge, thorns and leaves quivering with fury. “Die! Die! Me kill you! You cannot win! Kill kill kill kill…!” Mervix bent beside the coffin as the Rose bore down on him, its head descending to pulverize him. “Open JeStEr GaTe. In the name of Mervix Zell.” Mervix dipped his hand into the cover of the shattered coffin just as the Rose hovered several feet away, descending to deliver death to the man. There was a dulled squelch and then extended screeching as a hammer battered its head aside. Bludgeon in hand, Mervix proceeded to the base of the shrieking giant. “I’m just so tired.” With that, Mervix slammed his hammer into the Rose Tower’s bleeding stem, where Shadiic and Ullara had put all their effort into toppling and the sound of ripping cloth rent the air. The ground shuddered as the rose collapsed onto the cobblestone street, convulsing for several moments before becoming still. Heaving a sigh, Mervix knelt onto the ground, his hand reaching for a nearby Blood Blossom. Expecting a shriek, Mervix received a giggle instead from the bud and it settled neatly in his hand, it’s red petals deepening to a shade darker. “Finally. We’re done.” A crack of thunder roared again and Mervix looked up to see the sun just beginning to dip below the horizon, turning an icy blue in color, casting its pall light onto the streets. “Damn it! Grab a rose and hurry to the river! Run!” Mervix knelt down beside Tsu, offering his shoulder as a support. “Lean on me. We are going to get there together.” The river was deserted and there were no people in sight. Mervix cast his eyes frantically in all directions, hoping to catch a glimpse of the garish boat that they had seen this afternoon. As if summoned by force of will, the little boat sailed by, the same faceless man holding his sign above his head. Waving the shadow-silk, Mervix shouted. “We have it! We have all the items!”[/b][/color] Mervix cast his eye at the horizon where the blue sun was divided in half. A wailing wind whipped about them, moving some of the stalls out of order. As if he had all the time in the world, the faceless man lowered his sign and made his way to them. Mervix spread the three items at his feet. “We have what you asked for. We give you these in exchange for the masks…to the Midnight Ball.” Mervix added, glancing at the sign that the man had brought with him. The man took the shadow-silk and smoothed out its edges. Then he took the jeweled egg and broke its golden yolk over the silk. Finally he placed the rose in the middle of the yolk and the shadow silk bundled itself over the items, quivering and turning into a shade of midnight blue. With a crack, the silk hardened and turned into a porcelain half mask, enough to shield the eyes and the nose from description. He did the same with the items of the other three. Mervix picked up the mask, marveling at how light it was, how well it fit in his hand. “Thank you,” Mervix whispered to the man. The man bowed as a drop of rain hit his square on the head. First one and then another and like a painted portrait splashed with turpentine, the man began to melt away. Mervix looked around them as several more drops of rain hit the shops and the pavement. Like the man, these too began to lose both color and shape as they liquefied, forming an amalgamation of colors that pooled on the ground. “By the gods…” Mervix whispered as he looked at the sky, just behind the man. The new sun began to rise, a solar eclipse shielding a blue rimed sun. That and sheets of rain were heading in their direction, dissolving everything in its path. At a loss of what to do, Mervix decided that whichever direction they were to take, it had to be one away from the rain that was coming their way. “The houses! Let’s go!” Mervix shouted, ushering his companions forward. Running up the slope that hosted the houses of the Resident District. Mervix hurried to a house but the door would not open. He tried another further up but that door would not budge as well. Looking back, he watched as the rain had come up to the river. He looked around for something, anything that would give them shelter from the rain. ”Wait! The Midnight Ball! It has to be on top of the hill. Only the richest houses are built right at the top! It has to be there! It has to be…” Mervix took off, panting and huffing as the his legs took his up the sloping cobblestone streets. Mervix could feel the water in air clinging to his skin and the smell of rain not too far behind. The houses to his left and right had already begun to dissolve, having been pelted by several early raindrops. His heart pounded desperately within his chest, the sound of his footsteps beginning to be drowned out by the roar of rain just on their heels. And then that is where he saw it. The house on the hill. The only house where the ball could have been held. ![]() Like a lead weight, his steps faltered and Mervix collapsed to the ground, his heart plummeting like a dead stone, his mask clattering to the cobblestone pavement. “NO! NO…! No…no… I’ll never…never go back…never…not until…never…” His friends could go without him. But right now, he welcomed the rain. Rain heavy enough to drown his sorrow. |
