Alright, I would like to introduce the story that i am starting. I do indeed hope that you all enjoy it as I am enjoying putting my ideas down onto Paper/word document. I do ask a few things however from everyone reading it: -Firstly I ask that you comment on another thread, it simply becomes slightly messy if it goes Chapter - Chapter - OMG Love it - Chapter. Comments go here! -Secondly that you understand that this is a fantasy story that has nothing to do with FT or FTG, I may use the names of a few of the members if they allow it, however besides that. -Thirdly, I am a supporter for constructive criticism, however I would rather not have purely negative comments such as 'I hate it, go die in a hole!' -Fourthly I will try to update and add as much as possible, however I have other things that need my attention, so I will not always be able to post in it every. (Insert time) -Fifthly, This is a story of my own creation, if you ask I will allow people to use ideas from it such as name, abilities mini plots. However I would prefer if there was no plagiarism, thank you. Besides that I hope I can entertain and enthrall you with the world of my creation. Please enjoy. -Aysia. Updates page, Starting 21st November 2011, -21/11/11 - Editing Chapter 1 and dividing it into two separate chapters. Chapter one Maiden of Moonlight Nights The night was thick with darkness; the only light came from the illuminated sky as the gibbous moon and stars danced their luminescent way across the ebony shroud called night. The air held tightly upon the sounds of distant baying as the wolves readied themselves for their night time hunt. Shadows of birds and small animals darted from place to place under the black canopy of the sleeping Forest. The leaves laid a carpet of monotone upon the floor, the cold winter’s air started to cause moisture upon the leaves to freeze into a layer of thin frost, shimmering slightly in the clear cast night. The natural quietness of the night was suddenly interrupted by the echoing sound of snapping twigs and the clear crunch of compressed leaves, as a figure made its way through the labyrinth of the forest, disturbing the still cold earth and the creatures resting under it. The figure was a welt build young male, Clad in a plain leather jerkin covering his chest and upper arms, fastened with a series of three plain metallic buckles in the front, below that he wore a rough white cotton shirt, descending to his wrists where it finished with a loose ragged hem, the fraying a clear indication of its continuous use. Upon his legs he wore a pair of plain leather chaps and a rather large set of heavy leather boots, the stiff clothing pressed hard against his slight muscular build and glistened in the dancing beams of moonlight that were able to pass through the enveloping canopy above. The youth, in him late teens grasped a short undecorated dagger in his right, slightly tanned hand. Keeping his violet eyes trained on the distance. With little grace he continued his journey along the forest paths, a trail of crushed leaf litter that was sign of earlier or continuous passage of people, the trail was hard to identify in the little light of the night, however the youth moved slowly along it with an exaggerated plodding motion, ensuring that he did not loose slight and wander off into the endless expanse of the forest around him. The night’s silence was broken once more by the sound of a wolf baying, a loud howl from some distant creature searching for the fellow members of its pack. Twitching slightly, he swung his head to the direction of the sound, the youths face became clear in a thin beam of moon light, it held some features one would expect to see in a male of his age, a strong jaw with soft thin lips. He had a rather angular face with high set cheek bones; a thin rather average nose. His face held a look of concentration as his brow was taut and his Violet eyes peered off into the distance. A mop of clean ebony hair rested onto of his head, covering the upper parts of his ears and forehead. Moments later the bay was answered by another wolf, this one behind him by some distance however it sounded that the wolf was close to an earlier turn trail, enough to be of some concern as the wolves were known to attack humans, but not close enough to be of immediate danger if it was hunting him. With this new threat, the youth hastened his pace to ensure he was able to reach his destination before he was able to find out if he was the object of the wolf’s desires. As he continued down the path, the leaf litter below his feet lessened and the noises of snapping twigs and the low crunch of leaves accompanying his every step quietened replaced only my the dull thud of his boots on the cold hard ground. The trek continued for some time, with the absence of the leaf litter, the track was much easier to see, the foot prints compacted the ground slightly a single set of boot prints of similar size to those the youth wore snaked through the trees on other, less clear tracks. Keeping a quick pace he continued, every dozen steps he rotated his head to survey the nearby area. As he sped up slightly with the clearer trail, his foot impacted a fallen log, the Leather boots were able to absorb some of the impact however the shock caused the youth to gasp rather loudly in a mix of shock and pain, the sound echoed outwards before taking a step forward. “Aurec!?” A male Voice called out in the night, the sound carrying far in the cold quiet air. The youth stopped his movement and turned his body to the source of the sound. From behind a distant tree trunk appeared another male, his physique was similar to the Youth’s, however his face was much softer and a much sorter collection of chestnut hair topped his head. The male called out again as he started to move towards the Youth. “Aurec, is that you?” The youth nodded, the expression on his face changed from one of concentration to a large grin, his shoulders dropped slightly as he also allowed his muscles to relax. “’Course, who else would it be following your rather obvious tracks? Perhaps that woods woman you’ve been telling everyone about?” Aurec said with a rather sarcastic voice, taunting the other male, flashing a cheeky smile as he did it just visible in the low light. The other youth seemed taken aback by the comment and the fact that Aurec was there, however after a moment he returned the gesture with an equally large grin. “Sure, don’t believe me, however why are you out here anyway, I thought you said that nobody goes into the woods besides the ‘Forest Folk’ and the mad men at the fort who have had a bit too much to drink.” He said in an equally sarcastic tone. The youth also relaxed slightly and moved his hands to the back of his head. “Well ye’, but you forget that I’m the child of one of those ‘Forest Folk’, unless my mother marrying caused that fact to be forgotten. Anyway I’m here to make sure that a wolf doesn’t pick your stupid ass up. Who else would I be able to blame when I don’t want to be punished by the Captain?” Aurec said, laughing as he did. “Ha-ha... Laugh all you want. But you don’t need to look out for me; I can handle myself when push comes to shove.” The other male drew a large sword from a sheath located of his back, a plain sword around an arms span long with a decorative handle of spun metal. “Or have you forgotten that you are yet to beat me in a sword match, just ‘cause you’re the General’s son doesn’t mean that you are the best.” He joked back. As he did he swung the sword in front of him, the blade cut the air with an almost ringing sound, his sword hand was rather heavy from the weight of the weapon however he did show some skill. Aurec issued the unneeded act with weary look as he was very much used to this attitude from his friend and to him the whole act seemed well rehearsed. “Oh shut it, I could beat you with my eyes closed, anyway are you lookin’ for this mysterious woods woman or just come to brag to the wolves before they drag you off?” Aurec responded. The lightness in his voice had been replaced with a more serious tone as he enquired; the air grew slightly thick with tension as Aurec awaited the answer. The other male’s face constricted slightly as he thought of a valid reason, the night air around them was still quiet as all the creatures near them had moved on to ensure that they would not be the meal for a rather loud hunter or predator. “Ahh, I knew you were interested, and yes I am looking for the woman, you might as well come, if I’m right the place where I saw her last isn’t too far from here. Anyway Aurec who knows, when we return I may have a bride to be on my arm.” His voice was cheerful in contrast to the seriousness of Aurec’s. After a moment the tension around them dropped and it was once again replaced by the cheerful and somewhat childish air. “Whatever Skylar, I’ll just make sure you’re not killed and you better be right or we’ll both be the punch-line of everyone’s jokes for the next fortnight and maybe even be in a punch-line if the Captain finds out.” Aurec said sighing, Making his way forward, Skylar laughed slightly in response and turned, and continued along the well worn mud trail. Aurec kept close to Skylar’s heels, his dagger held ready in case of any danger as Skylar lead the pair through the dark maze of trees, the floor remaining free of leaf litter and the mud underfoot was soon replaced by blades of grass as the trees started to open into a large clearing. The clearing’s circumference was lined with rather old and large trees, their shadows casting a pitch black shadow over all that below them. The clearing was situated near a small stream, the sound of gurgling water filled the treeless grassed area, a fox ran across the far side of the tree free oasis as it spied the oncoming pair, its tan and white pelt darting towards the stream, with a quick bound it jumped over the water and landed on a small rock on the far side, continuing it’s passage it left the moonlight filled hollow and entered into the dark expanse beyond. Proceeding across the clearing, the unblocked light reflected on both of the pair’s leather armour, making them both seem to be almost metallic. Aurec held the small dagger with some pressure, still on edge from the baying earlier, his knuckles white with the pressure. Skylar being his confident self had already returned the sword to its sheath and walked in almost a saunter across the field, leaving a trail of boot impressions on the damp grass as he moved forwards, confident he was on the right direction as he had travelled this path numerous times over the past few months, he had informed the others at the fort of the existence of a strange woman in the forest who he had first seen when he entered it on a dare. A beauty only amplified by the fact that she only appeared in a glade on a moon light night, however each time he had told one of the other’s of his own age he was only met with ridicule, firstly because it was the general idea that only the Forest Folk as they were cruelly referred to from the nearby village entered the forest and seconds they thought the idea of a woman who appeared only by moon light was a bit fanciful for the female obsessed fool known as Skylar. “She better be real, or else I’ll have to kick you and leave you in the stream over there, the cold water might just bring back a bit of your sense, I doubt it but it’s worth a try.” Aurec jested to his friend; it was obvious that they were both veterans when it came to teasing with each other. He honestly didn’t believe the idea of the woman, the thoughts that Skylar had gotten slightly too intoxicated and then heard a story of a moon woman came to mind. His mother had told him tales when he was younger. Trying to recall them while he waited he remembered a fraction of the tale. ‘A woman who had cried all her tears for those she had lost agreed to guard the great northern river. She traded her freedom and sorrow for immortality and was crowned one of the three guardians. However she fell in love with the sun however at night when it left her, her heart broke and she once more wept, she wept and flooded the forest, the only one who could calm her was the moon. And since then she would only appear in the moon light.’ “Don’t you worry your pretty little head. She’s real and she will be here, I’ve seen her enough times to know where about she will appear. Try anything and you will be in the stream face first.” Skylar said after some time, his own gaze was plastered on the far side of the clearing to the line of trees which lay just behind the stream “We just have to wait for awhile, she’s usually here around this time.” His body began to tighten with the anticipation, he was certain that she would show again, she had every other time he had arrived at the clearing, he wished to prove to his comrade that he was not a fool and was indeed being truthful about the woman. “Alright, but we can’t wait too long or else we won’t be able to get back in time for the wake up call, if we are found out after hours woman or no woman we will be in trouble.” He sighed. Shaking his head slightly in disbelief that he was actually agreeing to stay here for any longer, his legs had already started to numb slightly with the cold. The chaps were only good for light armour and he had not thought that he would be out this long or that he would have had to remain stationary. “An hour, then we go back.” As the pair waited in the clearing, watching the far end with intensity the sky shifted and the world around them returned to it’s previous undisturbed self. The sounds of the night returned and the distant baying continued, it was father away than last time and so less of a worry for Aurec, as for Skylar, Aurec would have thought that even if the wolf had its jaw around his neck he wouldn’t care too much while waiting for this phantom maiden. The only other sounds in the clearing where of the babbling stream and the creak of leather on leather when either of them shifted their weight. The night seemed to enclose upon things, both of the pair were on slight edge, Aurec had grown up with stories about the forest and Skylar had heard rather graphic rumours about those who went too long in the forest without a ceremonial guide from the Forest Folk. The shadows around them seemed to take forms in the corner of their eyes, be it a wolf or a person. Trying to calm himself, Aurec turned to Skylar and tried to start a conversation to remove his mind from the false shadows around him “I don’t thi-“Aurec stopped suddenly, just as he had started the sentence, a tall teenage woman appeared from the other side of the clearing, the moon light enveloping her as she moved from the tree line, she wore a bright white dress of sorts, a simple thing seeming to be made of a soft silk, from her neck to just below her knees leaving her lower legs and arms bare, a dark length of what seemed to be ivy coiled around her waist and pulled the dress inwards, accentuating the woman’s curvy figure and another thing that also seemed to be ivy looped around both wrists forming two bracelets. Her pale skin seemed luminescent in the strong moonlight of the Clearing and long ebony hair, similar to the colour of Aurec’s fell to her waist in a soft river like manner, upon the left side of her head just above the ear was a small ivy leaf shaped clip, matching the belt and bracelets. To Aurec she seemed to be almost like one of the forest ghosts his mother had told him about when he was younger, or perhaps it was the mysterious spirit of the north river. Another of his mother’s stories came to mind, The Forest wraith, a ghost that lurked the forest of a night and stole the souls of those who disturbed it’s peace, with this though he grasped his dagger with more volition, ensuring that if this was true he would not be off guard. He felt rather foolish for worrying about something that he was sure didn’t even existed, however in the situation of Skylar being right for once, he wasn’t sure what was real and what was false anymore. The feel of the metal under in hand at least gave him some comfort and gave him enough courage to allow him to control the urge to break down or start cowering. If it was just a normal girl and he did, the thought of Skylar ridiculing him for the next month took away any other fear. The woman seemed to be unaware of the pair, her gaze concentrated on the flowing stream and she made her way towards it, she seemed to glide instead of walk. The definition of grace is what Aurec seemed to think of her. “Well I told you, she’s real and she will be my wife I tell you.” Skylar Whispered in a joking voice, giving a grin to Aurec, he had proven himself to be honest about his story. This had been point one to him and he was sure that as soon as Aurec confirmed this that every other recruit at the fort would be asking him about this woman and it would be his opportunity to become the new ‘it’ guy. His grin widened as the thought of him returning to the fort with this woman cropped up. She was indeed a sight, there were a few women who lived in the fort, however most were either young children or too old and married to one of the senior ranking officers. “We should go, who ever she is she isn’t right.” Aurec protested, he turned to Skylar or turned to him in turn, his worry flared up as he saw the girl simply walk to the stream and sit by the flowing waters undaunted by the fact that this was a dangerous forest in which there were multiple predators that hunted by the night. “You know what they say about the forest, she might be a ghost or whatever. “ Aurec’s voice grew in urgency, he was indeed worried about the safety of the pair, no good came from the forest at night, that is what everyone said. As even Skylar had said earlier, the only ones who enter were the folk from the nearby village and the drunks. “Don’t worry; I’ll protect you if you get scared.” Skylar joked, obviously not shaken by Aurec’s concern. Skylar understood Aurec’s worry however the fact was that he was right for once and he wasn’t going to miss his opportunity to show everyone else that he wasn’t just an over imaginative fool “Anyway I don’t think she is a ghost, ghosts aren’t th-“ “I’m not a ghost.” A female voice interrupted the pair. As they both turned their heads they saw the elegant woman standing a short distance from them, her soft pale face observed them with her sky blue eyes showing some amusement. “I am Elodie, and I assure you that I am no ghost.” She announced in a joyous tone then proceeded by flashing the pair a bright smile. Aurec once again tightened his grip on the dagger his nerves jumping so high that he as well almost jumped, the woman had seem to have crossed the glade in almost an impossible short time without either of them realising, which was something of a worry as both he and Skylar were being trained as soldiers and were able to take in the sounds of their environment. ‘Idiot’ he though to himself, he had been too concerned with talking to Skylar that he had taken his eyes off her, and now she was in striking distance, if she was going to act with some paranormal magic ability she would be able to. Just because she said she wasn’t a ghost, didn’t mean that she wasn’t. For all he knew, she could simply be trying to take him off guard, most of the soldiers at the fort tried to act rather chivalrous, however he knew from watching his mother and his cousin that women were able to match men blow for blow and in most cases from what he saw win. A mix of superior fighting skills and ‘Charm’ as he was told was how they were able to easily overcome opponents. “Hello, I’m Skylar, a pleasure to meet you.” Skylar announced rather formally to the woman, then followed up with an over exaggerated bow, the only thoughts running through his mind were of wooing the girl and leading her back to the fort to parade her around. “It’s not often I see a beautiful woman in the middle of a Cursed forest, do you want me to escort you back to the fort?” He asked in an equally polite tone, flashing the woman a smile, hoping that it would have the desired effect. “I know who you are Skylar; you have been following me to this place for the past few months. I do find it rather funny how you did not introduce yourself to me earlier as any normal gentleman as you seem to show yourself as would have. And this is in no way a cursed forest; you just haven’t seen it in the correct way.” She jested, it was clear now to see that she wore no shoes as moved in a small playful circle around the pair, Skylar simply looked in wonderment as he had for sometime hoped to see the woman this close and Aurec in caution, still not trusting the young woman. “And this is your friend Aurec. You are both from the nearby fort.” Aurec took a step back in shock, she knew his name and where he was from. During this Skylar’s face shot red in embarrassment after realising what she had just previously said, for the fact that the woman he had spent the past while wondering about knew about his slight ‘stalking’ habit of sorts. “How do you know my name?” Aurec asked in an enquiring manner, his voice however laced with concern once more. He moved his body into a rather defensive position, he had been taken off guard by words and he had no intention of being taken off guard with a strike. “Are you some evil forest witch?” With that the woman’s face turned from its happy expression to one more of frustration and anger. “A forest witch?!” Elodie said in shock “Firstly I don’t think they exist here, secondly I am not witch. Anyway, who doesn’t know your name around here? You are General’s son after all... And that is something of a gossip point all around the forest and the villages near it...” She said in a frustrated tone, venting her anger she stomped one of her bare feet onto the ground, a small splash of dew flying in the air that had previously settled on the dark green blades of grass below. “Why are you here anyway, this deep in the forest at night?” Aurec asked, as he did he let down his guard slightly, regretting the fact that he was being rather hasty to judge the woman in front of him, for all rational thought she was simply a care free girl who enjoyed to wander in the forest at night, it wasn’t an impossible thing after all, just a rather stupid thing. “I am here because I enjoy this place, you can not find a place more magical in its beauty anywhere else around here” Elodie said, as she did she turned to admire the clearing, the rays of moonlight reflected off the dew on the grass and flashing across the ripping stream, it was indeed almost magical. “And you can’t exactly admire the moon light in mid day, if I tried I would end up as mad as some of those who eat the mushrooms growing around the edge of the forest. Anyway, I live here in this ‘Cursed Forest’ as your friend calls it.” With that Skylar’s face grew and unimaginable shade of red as his embarrassment deepened, He let out a small awkward laugh, he shuffled slightly from side to side, the leather armour making a sound as it rubbed on the leather chaps. With a small dig at Aurec’s arm he tried to indicate to Aurec to change the conversation. “Anyway, I think I will accompany you back to your fort, it may be a pleasant change of atmosphere, I have been here for such a long time and it’s always nice to see something new.” Elodie said more to herself than the pair before quickly doing another half skip half glide circle around them. “Alright, let me show you the way, you don’t have to worry about the wolves or anything else in the forest, as I the mighty Skylar is here to protect you!” Skylar proclaimed rather loudly, happy in the fact that he may indeed be returning to the fort with a ‘bride-to-be’ on his arm. The embarrassment drained from his face as he now had a task to undertake and he was also one more step closer to showing of Elodie the mysterious forest woman. “I’m not as scared of the dangers of the forest as I am of you. I have a feeling that you will offer the most danger to me, well at least my sanity.” Elodie laughed, rather amused in Skylar’s exclamation. Skipping slightly in front of the two, back in the direction of where they entered the glade, she turned to face them again. “So, shall we?” “Indeed, we just have to er...” Skylar suddenly stopped, surveying the tree line with some confusion. “We just have to remember the way we came from.” He laughed awkwardly at his forgetfulness, scratching his head in a mix of embarrassment and thought. He had truly forgotten, another time he may have done this for some attention or simply for humour, however in all the excitement of the things that had happened, he had actually forgotten which way they had entered from. “This way...” Aurec sighed, moving towards a small break in the tree line and back into the forest, he also indicated to Skylar the rather large sets of boot impressions of the grass leading from the direction he was headed in, they had faded slightly since they had entered, however they were still fresh enough to see clearly in the light of the glade. “Thank god at least one of us keeps their head down to earth instead of daydreaming about what they want to do in certain clearings.” With that Elodie giggled, flashing them both a rather playful look as she waited for Aurec to catch up and pass her. The group vanished into the deep shadows under the blanketing canopy of trees as they left behind the moon light clearing. As the moved deeper into the forest in the small line, Aurec followed by Elodie in the still luminescent dress and back by Skylar, the babbling of the Stream dies away until it was no longer audible. And the leaf litter underfoot began to grow more and denser, as it did the sounds of crunching leaves and snapping twigs once again disturbed the night air. Edited by Aysia, Nov 21 2011, 10:38 PM.
