Chapter 11: A Normal Day

Dragon… A real, four legged, winged lizard dragon… There was no way that existed, and yet, Michael wasn’t as surprised as that when Victor told him about this. However, with the amount of things he had learned over the past three months… It was too much for one person to take. The young man was feeling very overwhelmed by all of this information, and he couldn’t sleep well at night. The fact was, a monster was living nearby and a bunch of strong guys were coming to set it free. Not only that, that monster turned out to be a real dragon, not like himself and Castor. To add to all the trouble, he had to continue Castor’s trainings, had to keep Aysia and her “council” at bay, had to lie to his mentor about the info he had gotten from Victor and keep his emotions in check; all of this while keeping his activities secret from Uncle Jack, Sam, Lisa and the rest of the folks of Dawn Rivers. In his bed, looking at the ceiling, the young man thought about all of this and felt truly weighed down by the loads of responsibilities he had gotten over the course of his stay in this town. He had come to a decision. Tomorrow, he was going to act like a normal kid his age. No training, no talk about Hunters, dragons or Ombre… No, he was going to enjoy what the town had to offer, without a care in the world.

******

Walking in town, he watched as people started to decorate their houses and singing the typical Christmas songs. Michael sighed. Little did they all know that a monster was living so close to them. Shaking his head from the thought, he continued to walk and found a café, something he had never seen in his whole time here. Intrigued, he entered it and was quite delighted by the peaceful atmosphere. However, there weren’t a lot of people present in it. In fact, there was only a waitress and an man slightly older than his uncle Jack. The former was extremely bored and looked delighted when she saw Michael come in. As for the latter, he was sipping his hot coffee with pleasure all written in his face. The young fire dragon had not realized how cold it was outside, since he was… well, a fire guy. In any case, he asked for a hot chocolate. Just because he wasn’t as cold as others, it didn’t mean that he couldn’t enjoy one of those awesome hot beverages.

As the waitress came with the hot chocolate and Michael paid for it, the man came towards his table and sat in front of the young man. While at first he found that very weird, Michael decided not to pry in his business or reasons to do that. Nevertheless, when the waitress went in one of her many breaks, the old man looked at the young man with extreme curiosity. Michael couldn’t help but notice and frowned. Putting his cup down, he looked at him. “So… what’s up?” The weird individual didn’t answer just yet; he simply examined the young man, like someone who was observing a frog he was about to dissect. Michael became annoyed, but simply talked once again, this time pressing his words. “Helloooo? What do you want?” The man then smiled, and pointed at him. “Lad… You’re like that girl in 1992… You’re special!” Michael frowned, but in reality, he was taken aback by this declaration.

To the best of his knowledge, only Uncle Jack, Uncle Brady, Castor and Victor knew about what he was. However, something else intrigued the boy. “What are you talking about? Who are you talking about?” The old man looked around to see that no one was near and was listening. He then took a deep breath.

Back when I was in high school, there was this girl. She was beautiful and a very driven person. However, because of her hot temper, the guys that wanted to ask her out lost all will and determination to do so. In any case, that girl was also surprisingly fit, more so than young women her age. She then became the second person and the first female to ever accomplish the “Ultimate Jungle Track”. I took an interest in her, and found out something interesting… She was like a superwoman! I saw save the life of an old man who crossed the street at the red light and was about to get hit by a truck. The fact was, she ran at superhuman speed, probably faster than that Jamaican runner! Although I wanted to tell people at first, I then realized that if she didn’t want to tell anyone, I shouldn’t be the one to reveal the secret. You… You look a lot like her, so you must be special like her!

Michael looked at the man with interest and a little anxiety. This man knew a lot of things that he shouldn’t know. “He’s… He’s talking about mom!” Michael couldn’t believe it: his mother was just like him, a Dragon. There was no doubt in his mind that she was the one who gave him his powers. However, now something came into his mind. What about his father? Was he just like them, or was he a normal human being? So many questions came up in his mind, but then he looked at this man and shrugged. Not only couldn’t he show any signs of knowing what this odd man was talking about, but also, today was his normal day. This was the time he had given himself to skip Castor’s training and to stop thinking about all the supernatural stuff in his life. “Listen… I have no idea what you are talking about... Sorry.” Michael then got out of his seat and left the café. Avoiding supernatural stuff was harder than he imagined.

Getting out of the café, he took a deep breath. There was no time for him to get caught up in such conversations: he had to relax and enjoy the day. Continuing to walk down the main street, he wished Sam and Lisa were there. This would’ve been a much better day for him. That’s when he bumped into Arianna Johnson who was running with speed. She was the girl who was attacked by a wolf and whom Castor saved. She muttered the word sorry, and continued her way. “Hey, wait!” Arianna slowed down and turned around to face the young man. “I’m sorry Michael, but I really have to go. I have to be somewhere and I’m late.” She then ran off. Michael shrugged and continued his way. He thought how she must’ve been very bored without her best friend Lisa.

Continuing his stroll, he looked as a mother and a father each held one of their little boy’s hands. The kid was about five, and he was smiling as the family also strolled through town. Michael sighed. He wished his parents were here; maybe having them would make all of this supernatural stuff easier to bear. Michael remembered them. His father was named Eugene Joseph Walker and his mother was named Ella Alya De Luca. He was told that his father died while fighting in Iraq; his mother disappeared when she learned the news, leaving an infant Michael to be taken care by Jack. From what he knew, his father had a brother and a sister, while his mother only had Jack as a sibling. To add to all of this, he found out by some stranger, who probably went to Rivers High back in the days, that she might’ve been a Dragon just like him. He never knew what to tell people when they asked about his parents. While he didn’t want to lie, Michael didn’t want to be a charity case by telling his life story. As he thought more and more about this, the more and more his head felt like it was about to explode. He started hyperventilating; what could one man do? How could he help Castor defeat Ombre, when he didn’t know anything about himself, his family and the real world that surrounded him? How could he defeat these “hunters”, who could probably kill him in seconds? Putting his right hand on his chest near his heart and his left hand on the side of his forehead, Michael breathed heavily, trying to regain composure. Then everything blacked out…

******

Opening his eyes slowly, Michael first stared at the ceiling for a few minutes. Then, he jolted up, looking around. He was at a quite expensive looking room, which was also very large. There were pictures of a man he recognized, but couldn’t place a name or anything with the face. He then took a deep breath and got out of the bed. Obviously, the teenager was cautious; he thought that the hunters might’ve started their attack and knew who the dragons were. He stealthily went downstairs and as he walked towards the door, almost to freedom, someone laughed behind him, which startled Michael. Turning around, his eyes widened in surprise… He saw three people dining around a table. The first person was the man he saw in the pictures upstairs. The second one was a young man in his early twenties as well as… “Lisa?!” he uttered in surprise. She waved at him with a timid smile. He then put the pieces together: the man was the mayor, while the other guy was the brother she had talked about a few times with him.

Michael was looking at them, still confused at the situation. The mayor laughed once again and started to speak. “We’re sorry about all of this, but there was no choice. You were passed out on the floor and since you didn’t seem drunk or anything serious, we brang you here and placed you in one of the guest rooms.” The youth listened and remembered how overwhelmed he felt earlier. His face slightly turned red as he began to think of the situation. Lisa, her father and her brother had seen him lying down on the floor, passed out. “How embarrassing…” he thought. The mayor, Jonas McCloud, started laughing and asked the youth if he wanted to eat with them, as they were about to eat supper. “Supper?! How long was I passed out?!” Mr. McCloud and Lisa’s brother, Ethan, laughed. “For about five hours. Haha, I guessed you really must’ve been tired or something.” Michael looked at him and sighed. He asked Ethan where the washroom was and after getting the answer he needed, went inside. Washing his hands, he looked at himself in the mirror. Putting water on his face and softly hitting it with both hands, he was determined not to let his life get the best of him.

As he sat down, Lisa passed him the lasagna. Michael thanked her with a smile and took a piece. As they started to eat and drink, Ethan cleared his throat. “So Michael… What exactly happened for you to end up this way on the street? You could’ve ended with a cold!” The youth looked at him and his face went slightly grim. “Well… I was thinking about my mom and dad, and I was thinking how life might’ve been easier if they were around…” A small silence took place, until Ethan smiled and slapped Michael’s back. “You don’t need to worry, Michael. There will always be a way, so just relax and enjoy what you have.” The mayor and Lisa looked at him with a look saying “that’s not the way to respond”, but the Walker gave him a large smile. That guy was right. He didn’t need to worry about Ombre, the hunters, Castor, his powers or whatever. There would always be a way for him to find a solution in due time, so he fretting about things he had no control over was useless. “Thanks Ethan, I needed that.”

As everyone finished their meal, Lisa took the plates and went to the sink to do the dishes. Michael proposed to help by drying them, to which she agreed. They were now alone, as Ethan decided to go for an evening stroll and the mayor went to the town hall to take care of administrative business. It seems they trusted him with the young woman, something he appreciated. As he dried the plates, Lisa smiled. Michael raised an eyebrow. “What is it?” The girl turned her head and looked him in the eye. “It’s the first time I’ve seen you really smile. It’s nice.” As she finished her sentence, she realized what she said and blushed. Michael reddened as well. She was being too nice, but he liked her for that. They finished their work and the youth went towards the door to go home. Lisa then grabbed his hand from behind. “So warm…” she thought. As for Michael, he thought her hands were soft. He turned around as she looked him again in his eyes. For the first time, she noticed his dark eyes, as Michael was lost in her blue eyes. “Michael… Are you doing anything tomorrow?” He was so lost in her eyes, he didn’t know how to answer her question, so he simply and gently shook his head. Smiling, she suggested they go see a movie. He simply nodded, blushing slightly, something she wouldn’t be able to see easily. He then left the house.

******

The young man named Ethan McCloud was walking in the streets. Looking around, he seemed to be analyzing Dawn Rivers with precision. Continuing to stroll through town, he took out his cell phone out of his pocket and dialed a number. Ringing twice, someone finally answered. It was the voice of a man. “I’m here now. What do I do now?”

- Keep scouting, and get rid of any nuisance.

- Like that Castor dude you were talking about the other day?

- Exactly. I’m counting on you. You have great promise as a Hunter.

- Thank you boss. I won’t fail you.

Ethan then hung up and walked towards a random bar. He had a mission to accomplish, and he would succeed at all costs.

Chapter 12: The Hunter

Explaining the whole “passing out” to Uncle Jack was a real pain in the butt. First, Michael had to explain exactly why he passed out in the street. Then, he had to explain how he ended up in the mayor’s house. Obviously, Michael omitted the explanations surrounding Castor; however, he told him all about his worries of his mother and father, and also how much he missed them. That truly calmed his uncle down. Remembering the talk, Michael realised that Uncle Jack missed his mother and father even more than he imagined. It was then revealed to him that Jack and Eugene were best friends, and that it was thanks to him his father and mother even began to talk to each other. Nevertheless, Jack was more on the alert concerning his nephew, considering he was a flame version of Clark Kent. Michael didn’t really care, because he had another worry coming his way.

Remember last chapter, when he decided to take a day off? Yeah, he forgot to tell this to Castor. Michael was kind of anxious to know whether or not the Iceman would be mildly annoyed or thoroughly pissed off. The youth sighed. “Oh well, might as well get the lecture and get this over with”, he thought as he walked towards the forest, “it’s not like he gives me much resting days anyways…” Arriving on training grounds, he saw Castor conversing with Victor (hawk mode). He wondered what they were discussing when the pair saw him arriving and stopped their little chit chat. As Michael got closer, he raised both hands at the height of his chest, arms extended, the gesture telling the two to chill. “Listen, before you get all up in my business, I would just like to say that I’m sorry I skipped training and that I will try as hard as I can not to do this again.” Surprisingly, Castor seemed rather pleased with the apology and made Victor fly.

The man then slightly raised his right arm, his palm facing himself and made quick movements with his fingers, inviting Michael to come attack him. The youth grinned as he charged full speed. Castor was slightly caught off-guard by the new speed the teenager displayed, but nonetheless was ready to counter. Covering his left hand in frost, the Iceman swung his arm towards Michael, aiming for his head. The young boy wasn’t intimidated; he ducked to avoid the strike, while still maintaining the speed he dashed with. He then went with an uppercut in which his fist, mid-action, lighted up with fierce orange flames. Impressed but not pressured, Castor simply avoided the punch by jumping back a few meters. Michael, still at his super speed, finished the uppercut in the air to spin around and kick towards Castor. While there was distance between them, it didn’t matter: a fireball, the size of a basketball, zipped straight through the air and came towards the mentor. Raising his hand, he caught the fireball, which instantly froze into an ice block. Dropping, it shattered into a bunch of pieces. Michael didn’t let up. While his mentor was freezing his fireball, he created chains of fire, which he skilfully spun around above him before lashing them out towards Castor. He concentrated the intensity throughout the fiery chains so that the power was at the tip.

Evading à la Matrix the chains, Castor waited for them to come back once more, as Michael jumped in the air so that he could hit him vertically. Unfortunately, this was a bad idea. The man caught both chains with his left hand, like a boss, and started to freeze them. The frost traveled through the fire-made weapons, almost reaching Michael’s hands. Quickly, he discarded them and as that happened they fell to the ground, shattering to pieces. The youth was a little frustrated; how come all of his attacks ended up getting frozen? Didn’t fire trump ice? Landing, he watched as Castor put his arms down, palm up and slowly raised them. As he did so, all the snow and ice around them started to slowly move, rising up in atrocious quantity. “What the hell?!” Michael knew, at this very instant, that he was screwed and that he had no chance of coming out of this alive or in one piece. As all of the snow and ice rose in the air and Castor made a taichi-motion, with calm and flexibility, which prompted the ice to slither through the air like a snake and come towards the youth. Michael’s jaw dropped in awe. “Y U NO TELLS ME YOU WERE A WATERBENDER?!?!” The youth comically ran away from the ice, as it gained on him rather quickly. Victor, from a distance, was laughing so loud it would probably give out their location to all the people in Dawn Rivers.

After much fun running away from the ice, Michael turned around while braking, facing the wrath of the Iceman. “CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!!” Taking a deep breath and let out his iconic Dragon’s Breath, which was much bigger and intense than the few last times he did it, so much that the ice actually stood no chance and melted upon impact. Watching the water drop on the snowy ground, he gave a thumbs up with a “hell yea” face that prompted Victor to fall off a branch in laughter. “Kid, I have to tell you, not only did you progress, you’re killing my abs!” The two started goofing off as Castor watched. “Not bad, Child of Ignis”, thought the Iceman, “you faced my assault quite well and level-headedly. You also got better at shaping your flames for different situations…”

******

After Saturday’s fiasco at the McCloud household, and Sunday’s rather awesome sparring session, the last week of vacation came knocking at Michael’s door… as well as Sam, who was back from his trip to Las Vegas. This reminded Michael that he never asked Lisa how the heck she came back two days before her scheduled return. No matter, he would ask her some other time. For once, he realised how much having Sam around wasn’t so bad. Michael opened the door to see a brand new Sam, with more style and radiating confidence than before. “Sam, you’re blinding me with your awesomeness! Vegas was that good?!” The future detective gave his friend the “me gusta” face and Michael nodded in approval. If anything was going to loosen up and boost that young man’s self-worth, it would be Las Vegas.

It was already evening when the youngsters came inside the house. The young Walker had been reading all day, trying to get his mind off of things. In any case, The PS3 and HD TV were all set up for a game of “Call of Duty”. This would finally be Michael’s time to win a game, as Sam always, ALWAYS kicked his butt in it. Unfortunately, he soon found out that ten days in another state did not change his skills in this game. After a few more rounds, Michael got out the couch, going for an exotic “cola champagne” (look it up). Giving a bottle to Sam, he hesitated to drink it when he read “champagne”, but when he drank it, his expression changed to “me gusta”. In any case, the doorbell rang once more. Michael opened the door to see Ethan McCloud, Lisa and Arianna in front of him. Confused to the extreme, he awkwardly let them in. It wasn’t that he didn’t like them, but ever since he met Lisa’s older brother Saturday, he had a bad vibe about him. Looking at him closely, with his jet black hair, his blue eyes (like his sister), his quite white skin and overall demeanour, Michael just felt something was off about him. Nonetheless, he played a game with him, to whom he lost quite quickly and with humiliation (he was thoroughly armed while Ethan only had a knife).

After a few laughs and such, the group sat down at the couches of the living room, starting to talk about the whole “descendants of the founders” and how much it affected their lives. Ethan than cleared his throat.

So, y’all know about the founders of this town, right? Well… here’s a legend my dad told me when I was a kid. He said that each founder was much more than he appeared to be. For example, my ancestor George Seth McCloud was said to be the greatest sharpshooter of this state, while Christopher Jenkins was said to be quite fond of nature and every single kind of life form, as if he was connected to them more than just spiritually. Steven Johnson was much more attached to dogs, foxes and wolves; they apparently also seemed to love his company. As for Giotto De Luca and Malcolm Walker, these two were… well exceptionally strong. They had a lot of vigour, but it always seemed as if Walker had a penchant for everything related to electricity and the like while De Luca had a penchant for everything that involved the water works of the city.

You see all of these funny facts about our ancestors? Apparently, they were a connection to something bigger… They described the special abilities they possessed. McCloud was deeply connected to his pistol, the “Red Hawk”, which never left his side and killed hundreds of men and beasts alike. Jenkins had psychokinetic abilities, which would explain how he was deeply connected to the natural energy of things. Johnson was rumoured to be some type of werewolf or Skinwalker. However… Walker and De Luca were never truly given a name of true description. All it was told was that… they were “like demons”.

While at first the story seemed stupid, everyone was getting captivated by it as time passed, including and especially Michael. He knew that at this moment, something big was being revealed to him. That might’ve been a legend to them, but he knew all too well that this was real. He was like his ancestors Malcolm Walker and Giotto De Luca: a Dragon. Also, while he couldn’t identify him by a name, he knew Christopher Jenkins was somehow the same thing Aysia is. However, he couldn’t put a finger on what Steven Johnson and George Seth McCloud were. This was getting truly exciting for Michael; it was like billions of pieces of a puzzle were presented to him and he had to solve it, but he only could do part of it for now. But now he had to find out… What exactly was Aysia? Steven Johnson? George Seth McCloud? There was only one thing he understood: there were more things in this world that he didn’t understand.

Sam laughed at Ethan, telling him that this was obviously a legend and not real. Lisa and Arianna were also sceptic. Ethan then looked at Michael. “What do you think?” Everyone turned their gaze towards him, awaiting an answer. The youth sighed. “I just think that the legend is only a little true. We don’t have all the info surrounding the founders, so we can’t argue.” Everyone was a little impressed by his answer and Michael was satisfied with it as well. For once, he wasn’t lying at all; he did believe that there was not enough details on the matter and thus they couldn’t prove the veracity or untruthfulness of it. It was getting late, so Lisa, Arianna, Ethan and Sam all went back home. Once again, Michael was alone in this large mansion.

******

“Come on; get your head in the training!” Michael was panting heavily as shards of ice were surrounding him, levitating and practically inches from skewering the youth. Blood was seeping out from a cut on his cheek, and he could barely stand up. Suddenly, the ice shards dropped to the ground, as if gravity finally caught up to them. Castor sighed. “What’s wrong, Child of Ignis?” Michael’s eye twitched when he heard that nickname again, but answered honestly. “It’s just… Gosh, I know nothing about everything! I know Aysia is not a Dragon like us, I now know there are other types of supernatural beings in the world, but yet I know nothing about them! I thought I had almost everything figured out, but I couldn’t be further from the truth.” Victor flew in at that moment, landing on Castor’s shoulder. The man, who was in a long black trench coat and was wearing all black everything, sighed once more. He then approached the teenage boy and put his hand on his shoulder. “There is a reason I did not tell you anything. If I did, something like losing your focus would happen, just like it’s happening now. In due time, everything will be revealed to you.”

Victor flapped his wings and flew in the air, transforming into his gryphon form before landing with a bang on the ground next to the two Dragons. “We can confirm that indeed, Aysia is not a Dragon, and that there are other types of supernatural beings.” Michael was surprisingly satisfied by this answer. Castor, seeing this, threw a bottle of energy water towards him. It was then that he realised he hadn’t replenished his full strength ever since Victor brought him to the Black Oak Tree. The young man looked at Victor, and both of them grinned. Castor frowned. “When did you two become such good friends?” The two laughed a little again, before Michael drank the whole bottle. Tossing the bottle to the side, he got in a stance, ready to spar once more. The mentor smiled and jumped back a few meters, creating some distance between the two. The youth then charged with his fist hardened with orange flames, but then something stopped him.

Michael slowed down, his flames dissipating and his eyes widening. He watched as his mentor was slowly falling on the ground, blood oozing from his chest. “CASTOR!!” The man was on his knee, panting, but put his hand up in a stop motion. “Don’t come any closer! Stay right where you are!” Victor was already on alert, looking around to see where the shooter might’ve been. Michael was very shocked. Once he had talked with Castor and Victor and they explained to him that no human invention could harm them, except maybe a nuclear bomb. However, now, in front of him, Castor had been hurt by a bullet. Something more surprising occurred though. The man stuck his index and his thumb inside his wound and pulled the bullet out of his chest. Then, he softly placed his hand on the wound, freezing it with a layer of frost. Michael sighed in relief; this would surely stop the bleeding.

Another shot was heard, but Victor had already placed one of its large wings in front of Michael, stopping the bullet from hitting him. “Show yourself, you coward!” The gryphon’s proud and powerful voice boomed in all the forest, even shaking some of the trees. Though it wasn’t clear, Michael could see from a distance a young man coming out from behind a tree. “There he is! We should-” Victor’s wing made it clear that Michael should stop talking. Looking behind him, he watched Castor panting heavily, the ice doing a great job stopping the haemorrhage. The shooter approached, and the closer he got, the more Michael’s anger rose. However, his rage slowly turned into surprise, as a figure he met not so long ago became clearer in front of him. “… Ethan? But… I don’t understand… Why would you…” Ethan’s expression was different from what he had seen so far. Instead of a carefree young adult, Michael saw a cold-blooded killer. The McCloud then pointed his red pistol towards the youth once more, but the gryphon was faster, swinging its wing to backslap the young man away. Though he was able to block, Ethan would feel the tremendous force behind the hit.

“You… You’re not just any gryphon, are you?” Victor’s stance was that of a pouncing lion one. Michael was still surprised by the turn of events, but more so because he began putting some of those billions of pieces together. “You’re one of them, right? One of those hunters.” Ethan smiled, but there was no joy in it. “Not bad, Walker. Yes, I’m a hunter, who was sent here to kill anyone who would oppose us.” Castor then started to laugh. Michael and Ethan were surprised that the Iceman was expressing amusement at the situation at hand. Victor was slightly amused as well, but didn’t break from his leaping stance. Ethan then gave the man a cold stare, which didn’t faze him at all. “A kid talking to grownups about killing… How amusing. You see, Ethan McCloud, not only will you not succeed, your group of hunters will fail as well. You got lucky on your shot, but you won’t get any of us ever again.” The temperature all around them dropped again, even lower than the normal cold of winter. For a few moments, nothing happened. Then, Ethan aimed his red gun towards them and shot another round, but this was quickly intercepted by one of Michael’s fireball, which he had quickly compressed to be around the same size as a bullet. They collided, flattening one another, and destroyed each other. Victor then leaped like a lion to attack and pin down the sharpshooter, but he was much faster than anticipated, dodging with superhuman speed and even kicking the gryphon with a lot of strength. He then ran away, before any of them could do something about it.

Victor watched the young man get away and was about to give chase, when Castor fell with his whole body once more with a thud. The gryphon growled and motioned the youth to follow him. Michael walked towards his mentor and put one of the man’s arms around his shoulder, carrying him to whatever place Victor had in mind. Luckily for them, the Iceman was still conscious. “What the hell was this?! He could move as fast as we can, Castor! What is he?” The man was breathing heavily and noisily, but he still heard the question. Realising he should let Michael a little more in the know, he cleared his throat. “When we called the group Ethan is in ‘Hunters’, it’s not because they are actually people that hunt animals… No… They are the supernatural beings known as Hunters.”

Chapter 13: The Confrontation

“It’s going to take two or three days before he’s completely recovered, but he’s been around for a while, so I’m not worried about him.” Victor tried to comfort Michael about Castor’s condition. The gryphon had brought the Iceman through the illusion and had dumped him into the lake, near the Black Oak Tree. Michael seemed a little concerned, but the beast told him that the man was unconscious and that by the time he would wake up, he would be in his hotel room. Everything had just gotten worse. Lisa’s brother was a so-called “Hunter”, and was part of the group that was trying to release Ombre into the world. Now, Michael wondered whether or not Lisa was also in this whole mess. His instincts and heart were telling him that she wasn’t, but all facts and reasoning pointed otherwise.

******

Going back to school was really hard. Michael was getting used to having no strings attached to school work and whatnot, but now it was time to get his head back into his studies. Maybe it would take his mind off of things. In the hallway, he saw Lisa coming his way, but before she could notice him, he stealthily blended in the crowd, passing by her incognito. Her brother had tried to kill him and his mentor; this was awkward enough for him. Sam seemed to have noticed this, because the first thing he asked him was the reason which pushed him to avoid Lisa. “I mean, you guys have this thing going, and now you’re trying to camouflage your way away from her.” Michael sighed. He wasn’t in the mood for explanations and the like. He simply answered that he didn’t feel like talking to her.

The day passed without any incident, although Michael was pretty sure Lisa was on to him. Nevertheless, the youth was pretty sure he would be able to retain “A”s for the rest of the school year. As the last bell rang, Michael went directly to his locker to take the books he would to do his homework. He then headed outside, but once there, he saw something that made him angry in a matter of seconds. Ethan was here, next to his car, most likely here to pick up his little sister and Arianna. Michael speed-walked all the way towards him and grabbed the Hunter by the collar, shoving him towards his own car. “What the hell are you doing here?!” Ethan smirked with his cold stare. Some students saw this happening, calling some of their friends to watch. “I’m just here to give Lisa and Arianna a ride home. Shouldn’t you be looking after that dumb ice dude? I got him pretty good.” That was the last straw.

Michael’s red eyes became white as the black color of his iris spread towards the sclera. The youth raised his fist to hit Ethan, being unable to contain the rage he felt at this moment. “Stop!” Lisa’s voice reached him and the tension he experienced left his body. He didn’t need to turn his head to see her; he knew she was there, frightened and confused at what was going on. Looking at Ethan’s face, he let go of his collar and uttered a few words to him. “This is not over.” The young adult gave him the same cold stare. “Likewise.” Michael then left the scene, heading straight home. While it was true Jack took care of him, gave him food, a place to sleep and an opportunity to thrive for a higher education, it was Castor who had told him about himself, about his abilities and had helped him keep his emotions in check (though he doesn’t have full control over them). The boy somehow felt gratitude towards him; thus, he would become stronger and defeat Ethan and his gang.

Arriving home, Uncle Jack was still not home from his out-of-town trip, so Michael took this opportunity to go to the forest to train. However, now that he thought about it, the youth didn’t want to lead the Hunters towards the Black Oak Tree, so he took a long road. It was a wise decision to do so, because as he got deeper into the forest, he could hear several footsteps behind him in a distance. Some were pressing on the snow while others were cracking the branches of dead trees. However, Michael couldn’t let them know that he was aware of him being followed. While it was an advantage, the Dragon knew he was outnumbered. “Around five of them”, thought Michael as he continued his walk, “I don’t think I’ll be able to do anything against them.” Arriving at a place with fewer trees than others, he dropped his bag, stretched and decided to do some training here. If they were going to tail him for Castor’s location as well as the whereabouts of Ombre’s seal, they were sadly mistaken.

Suddenly, the youth’s senses were tingling, like the scent or aura of death was quickly approaching him. The first time he had this sensation was when he was fighting against Aysia, and he knew he had to react quickly. Instinctively, the Dragon jumped towards his rear, cocking his head backwards as well. A mere second later, an arrow passed dangerously close to him; a few centimeters more and he would’ve become a human shishquesbab. As he landed, Michael lit his fists on fire, but it was too late. He was surrounded, and he didn’t even have time to react. Four people were pointing weapons at him. A girl, about the same age as he was, with light brown hair and black eyes, had a sword near his throat, under his chin. A young man, about twenty-two, had pressed his shotgun on the side of Michael’s head and was looking at him with a cold stare with his black eyes. Though he couldn’t be totally sure, he noticed from the corner of his eye that another girl, perhaps the same age as he was and certainly with blonde hair, had a bow and an arrow ready to be fired at his rear. Up in the trees, another guy, slightly younger than Michael was, was wearing a winter cap on his red hair and was now aiming a sniper rifle towards him. Finally, sitting on a log, was Ethan. Michael frowned.

“So this is the dangerous group of so-called "Hunters"? Not so impressive when they are in front of you.” Though he was saying that, Michael could feel the strong air of death surrounding these guys, especially the girl with the sword and the kid with the sniper rifle. He couldn’t quite put his finger on why they were doing this, but he had to do something, or else he would die pathetically. Ethan smirked at his remark. “You, a monster that senses people through smell and other stuff, couldn’t even react by the time they surrounded you. You should know by now how strong these guys are.” The swordswoman was pressing her blade a little more against Michael’s throat, but he didn’t budge. In fact, all is attention was focused on Ethan, to the point where he didn’t see the rest. Seeing this, the gunner pointed his red pistol towards Michael and pressed the trigger. The bullet flew next to his head, and lodged itself into the trunk of an oak. That didn’t faze the youth, but he now knew that this wasn’t fun and games. This was what Castor had trained him for.

Suddenly, Ethan made a motion with his hand and the other hunters lowered their weapons, even if the kid in the trees stayed in his position. The Dragon looked at all of them. Indeed, not one of them seemed to be over twenty-five. His eyes stopped on the girl with the sword. Now that he was looking harder, her eyes weren’t black; they were dark brown. She was wearing her light brown hair in two pony tails on each side of her head. All of them were wearing about the same thing: a leather jacket, black jeans and a scarf. Underneath hers was a navy blue and red check shirt, like a lumberjack. There was something about her… that was different than the others. Both of them were staring at each other, and when she realised that, she diverted her gaze. “Her name’s Rosie”, said Ethan, “she’s a Hunter like me, as you could notice. A virtuoso when it comes to using a sword.”

Michael was starting to see a pattern here. Unlike them, these supernatural beings always carried some sort of item, object or weapon that they used to fight. While they looked normal when he observed them, he knew that these were able to hurt people like him. In any case, Ethan got up and walked towards the youth. Seeing how the rest of the people seemed to have their guards down, Michael started getting on the offensive. Kicking the man who possessed the shotgun and who was at his right, he ducked as the girl behind her shot an arrow. The object passed right above his head, as the youth lit his hands and feet and spun around to create a small flame tornado. Up until now, even if he was training with Castor seriously, he never fully used his power. However, now was different. These guys came here to kill, so there was no holding back necessary.

Rosie and the kid with the sniper sprung into action. A shot was fired by him, while she swung her blade towards his head. He instinctively maximized the flames throughout his arm and swung it upwards. The fire was hot and strong enough to stray the sniper bullet from its way, as well as block the sword strike. Automatically, with his right arm, Michael created a wall of fire that protected him from the shotgun dude’s shot as well as the blond girl’s arrow. Ethan didn’t do anything, but was itching to fight. The young man than dashed towards the McCloud, ready to give him a royal smack down, but a bullet skimmed his left leg, courtesy of sniper kid. Its pressure and strength of rotation was so strong that it truly bruised his leg. Staggering slightly, Michael lit his feet on fire and jet propelled himself to the side, avoiding Ethan and the sniper kid’s attack. However, as he did so, the buff young man with the shotgun caught his neck while Michael was moving with his left hand and struck him with force to the ground, pinning him down. He then aimed his shotgun at his head, turning around to seek Ethan’s approval. “Finish him.”

The next moment, the shotgun wielder was sailing through the air, landing very far away from the fight, unconscious. The Hunters all turned around to see who this might be. While at first Ethan and Michael thought it was Castor, they quickly realised that a woman was responsible for all of this. But not just any woman… No, it was Aysia, the woman with powers different than the Hunters or himself and Castor. “You seem to be in quite the predicament, Child of Ignis.” Michael grinned. That woman was truly terrifying, and at this moment, he wondered whether or not she was stronger than Castor. “Yeah… Glad you could make it.” She helped him up before the sniper kid fired another shot. Instead of dodging it, her eyes turned white and she moved her arm at high speed, catching the bullet in mid-action. “Wow”, thought Michael, “that woman is truly a monster…” The blond girl and the sniper fired each two rounds of their respective weapons, but the shots were stopped in midair, as if they hit an invisible force. While they couldn’t comprehend it, Michael knew exactly what that was: a force field.

“Stop it. Rosie, take Maximilian and let’s get out of here.” Ethan uttered his commands and the Hunters stopped fighting. “Tch. You get lucky, fire dude and lady”, said the kid in the trees, as he landed on the ground, “next time though, I’ll make sure you won’t be able to move anymore!” He then gave them an evil grin and disappeared at high speed. The blond girl and Ethan also did the same, as the swordswoman named Rosie went to pick up the shotgun dude named Maximilian. Michael sighed and went to help her get him up. She was confused at the gesture. “Didn’t we just try to kill you? Why are you helping Maximilian? He was about to end your life just a few moments ago!” The youth looked at her and smiled. “I don’t know about Ethan, but you two don’t seem to be truly evil. When he put his shotgun to my head, I felt it, though very faint… his sadness, that is.” She looked at him and slightly blushed, before she shook her head and super sped away.

Michael looked at Aysia. “Thanks for your help, lady. If it wasn’t for you, I’d probably be dead.” She looked at him and smiled. “No problem. I hope this wins us points for you to join us when this is over.” She then super sped away. The youth looked around. In this peaceful forest, he had come extremely close to death and yet, he wasn’t shaken by it. All the training he had done with both Castor and Victor had paid off, but it still wasn’t enough. Today, he saw how much work needed to be done; especially when it came to people that could hit him from a distance. Michael sighed. At least, he averted getting killed for today.

After making sure that every last one of the Hunters had left the area, Michael went back to his usual training grounds. While it wasn’t there that the Black Oak Tree was, it was still an area that the enemy group knew about, which made it open for them to catch him, Castor or Victor. Arriving at the place, Castor was there, as well as the gryphon. The teenage boy smiled; he was worried for him, but he knew he was tough. The Iceman looked at him for a moment and smiled back. Michael walked towards them. “I met the group of Hunters. They are… unexpectedly young. Some are my age or a little older than myself. However… they are extremely stealthy and fast. If it wasn’t for Aysia, I’d probably be dead as we speak.”

Castor listened carefully as Michael explained exactly what happened. He sighed as the youth mentioned what Aysia said. Nonetheless, he seemed happy that the teenage boy was alive and well. “What about that bullet wound you got from the sniper kid?” Michael looked at it and could see the healing process right in front of his eyes. “I guess the wound is alright. Tell me, Castor… The Hunters’ particularity is their weapons, right? I mean, they can wound us, while normal guns and stuff wouldn’t hurt or even get through our skin, right?” Castor nodded, but didn’t say more. It seemed Michael had figured out part of the mystery.

After finishing his training with the Iceman, Michael went back home, only to see Lisa standing in front of the door. It was snowing beautifully as he walked towards her. She wasn’t mad, but he could see disappointment in her eyes. “Hey.” Lisa turned her head to see him approach. “Hey.”

- Look… I’m sorry you had to see me like this, but don’t expect me to apologise to your brother.

- Why? What did my brother do to make you so mad?

- I can’t tell you, but trust me… he deserved any kind of punch I was going to give him.

- But he’s my brother! You couldn’t keep your calm, even for me?

- No. I’m sorry, but him being your brother doesn’t change a thing about how I think of him.

- Does his actions change the way you think about me?

Michael stopped talking. Indeed, he had been avoiding her ever since Ethan shot and seriously injured Castor. However, now that he was talking to her… It wasn’t the same. Still, him being her brother didn’t make things any easier. Michael couldn’t risk getting her mixed in all of this supernatural. “It doesn’t… but I don’t think we should see each other anymore.” The young man than opened the door and entered the house, not having the strength to look in her eyes. He had just broken up with Lisa, and they weren’t even dating. Smooth.

However, do know that book one is more or less finished. If you want to read some other chapters, PM me your address and I'll probably send it to you in the next 3 days, if I feel like it XD
