Alright, well, I've recently come across something of interest. The argument here, can go both ways, but basically, do you believe that people should earn your respect? Or Rather, that you should give everyone your respect until they do something to loose it, or keep it. Now, personally, my stance Is that everyone deserves respect. I think it's a better outlook on life, well, basically a healthier stance on life. I mean, If people had to earn my respect, then I would end up looking like a jack ass, always looking down on people. I couldn't see myself actually happy, because very few would actually strike me as interesting, or even gain my respect. Which means, I wouldn't want to hang out with anyone at all, therefore, I wouldn't have many, or any friends. I live everyday, always thinking highly of others. I find it important to have faith in others, It gives me a sense of hope, or else I wouldn't be as happy as I normally am. Plus, you get a better response out of others when you treat them as your equals. Well, this is my stance on the argument, what are yours? |

I vote for Respect to all, unless given reason not to. Why? Easy...when you demand respect, obviously your only out to boast yourself. If you have to EARN respect...and since we're only talking online stances...on a comunity of people online...why should you? Why should someone have to earn your respect? They are here on their own free will, they do not get paid and its the members that keeps a site like this alive. When you make them earn something, they lose interest and they themselves might not enjoy themselves aka leave. We're all of different religion, race, and even sex. We are all different, and we are together for fun. So yes...i beleive everyone doesn't have to earn anything...they should just have fun and respect everyone else who is here for the exact same reasons. Again the Respect all already is for online purposes. I understand some points in RL (Real Life Situations) can be different, but my whole in a total still goes for the answer i choose before. |

hmm good one actually :D personally i must be honest and say i cant choose, because i do belive respect is something you earn BUT theres a general respect you give everyone. Acting like a decent person in front of others, being helpful etc. But true respect, that which goes beyond the normal is something i belive must be earned from me. maybe it sounds a bit rough when i say "must be earned" as to me that respect, and how its earned is simply friendship, i have a much greater respect for my friends than for those i dont know. Not that i wouldn't treat people around me with respect, i certainly do. :) So for that i cast a blind vote :P |

I think every person should be respected. Whether or not you agree with them or like them and no matter what you think of them they deserve respect. From a doctor to drunk person they all deserve respect. An example of a literary character who respected everybody no matter who they were would be Atticus from To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee.

The way I view it, I have 3-4 "levels" of respect. The reason? Because this dichotomy need not be a dichotomy. Allow me to outline my view on respect. First of all, I believe that everyone is equally deserving of my respect, simply for being alive. I appreciate strongly that billions could be in my place right now, and the same is true for everyone else. Therefore, as a human being you deserve some measure of my respect and politeness. This is my baseline. Then there are those who lose my respect. I will be polite, but that doesn't stop me being cold or bitching about them behind their back. Bad habit I know, but still, it's how I behave. Then there are those I absolutely hate. I cannot talk to these people without going into a flying rant about all their flaws. My parents are in this category, as are some other unfortunates such as my last girlfriend. And there are those I rly rly respect. If it's an older female, I'm likely to start referring to them as my sister, if it's a boy I'm more likely to be..ladish around them. Girls my age who earn my respect to this level are likely to become my new gf xD I respect very few people to this level, and so they're usually the only people I trust with personal secrets. So I have 4 levels, and 4 definitions. Respect comes in grey-scale gradients, like most questions of morality and how we should behave towards our fellow mammals...and by extension the rest of the animal kingdom. |

I think of respect as a number line starting at zero. At zero you get a moderate, general amount of respect. I'll be polite but I might be a little skeptical or initially distant. Going into the positive numbers are those who have earned more respect. Negative is the opposite of course. |

You should always give the amount of respect you expect to get from others, regardless of how they act. Its called maturity. |

^ That Also respect and trust are two totally separate things There are some people I really respect, but do not trust at all and there are some people I don't respect as much as I should but I trust them regardless |
